Yes I'm a noob. I tried searching for my answer but I came across nothing. So here goes. Two parter.
What is flashing the kernel? I understand it involves cpu clock speed and battery life. Is it something I would want to do? How do you do it? Where do you find kernels to flash your phone with? Can you mix a kernel with a ROM of your choice and if so, what's a good combination?
I'm still trying to figure out how to switch between ROMs in the most easiest and hassle free way possible, but that has escaped me. What I do is load the bootloader and wipe then flash the new ROM. Then I gotta recover my apps & data with Titanium Backup (Usually half the data is missing). Can I just use the Nand backup to switch? Should I use a completely different backup tool for each ROM I like to use?
Try if you like.. Combine any kernel as as long as it is built for the Rom you want.
Undervolted kernels do improves batterylife. But it is up to you to find your own combination. Try Pershoot and IntersectRaven's kernels to start with.
You flash kernels with Amon_RA's recovery or other tool just like you flash ROM's.
If the Kernel don't work for you just nandroid or try other kernels.
Wish someone can make a Kernal like benbuchacher has done on his G1/DREAM ROMS "SuperD"

after rooting and flashing ROMS, im confused on somethings. When flashing a new ROM do you ALWAYS have to wipe? Also, when you make a Nandroid back up, wipe and flash a new ROM, can you restore from that backup so you dont have to download all your apps//set up your screens all over again? Please help.
If you are switching to a completely new rom, then yes, you have to do a complete wipe. If you are upgrading a rom, adding mods or something similar then you don't need to do a data wipe. If you are switching from a rom that uses apps2sd from one that uses it you should probably wipe your ext partition as well.
To answer your second question, a nandroid backup backs up EVERYTHING on your phone, so using a nandroid restore will knock out your new rom and put everything back the way it was, including apps and settings. If you nandroid back from your new rom (lets say your phone gets stuck in a boot-loop or something...) you should do a data wipe and wipe ext partition, then nandroid.

I want to use stock Android 2.1 ROM but want to use SetCPU to overclock. I tried flashing this kernel: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=690238 but was stuck on the white/green HTC Screen. I then tried this kernel: http://forum.androidcentral.com/162759-post49.html and it got rid of super user permission so I couldnt use SetCPU. Is there another kernel I can use? It has your apps2sd info in it, hence wiping before changing roms because most use different versions of a2sd.

Ok... I'll give you what info I can, but I'm somewhat new to this myself... the first kernel you tried to flash has to be used in tandem with the rom listed at the top of the thread (darchdroid...) the second needs to be used with damage control's rom. I don't understand why you lost su permissions by flashing the second one, but again I'm new to this.
I hope you made a nandroid backup (always do this, otherwise some people around here will flame you...) I would restore, try installing the rom for the kernel you want to use and then re-flash it.
Something you might like is freshtoast (check: http://geekfor.me/new-release/fresh-toast-v21/) it has a stable rom (fresh 2.1.x) and all the overclocking goodies you're looking for. That way you won't break your phone / lose root in the process.
P.S. your link is broken for your last question, so I can't answer it

I don't want to use a rom. I was told I can overclock if I use a custom kernel. Which kernel should I download from the second link and heres the last link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=684838&highlight=kernel
Sorry for the delay... long day(s) at work!
For your kernel problems, please read this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=622916
It gives you step by step instructions on how to compile and install (probably the wrong term, but whatever...) the kernel you want.
In order to use setCPU you'll need a custom kernel, the CDMA Hero doesn't support it straight out of root.
This thread seems like it may contain your answer: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=699792
I also highly recommend heading to following link, it has tons of guides and will answer most of your questions: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=6738713&postcount=1
Hope this helps, but as far as more in-depth kernel questions, you'll need to find someone else to ask, I'm all out of ideas
is there an easy way to switch between stock and a rom?
in other words, i havent been able to succesfully find a rom/kernel/modem combo that gives me as good battery life as stock. i was wondering if there is a way to backup a rom/kernel/modem combo so that i can switch back and forth between that and stock without having to odin and/or flash everything again.
for example, if i am at home and can plug my phone into a charger everyday i would use a custom rom with all the fancy options but if im going on a trip id like to be able to switch to eclair to get as much battery life as i can. when i get back home i could just select an option and restore my rom/kernel/modem combo.
is there a simple way to do this?

are you sure TiBu is able to backup/restore modems? can you name some examples of roms that have a "no-wipe" version? thanks

TiBu is for backing up your apps, it will not backup your modem, kernel, and what not.
The problem you will eventually run into when flashing back and forth with no wipe is residual from your previous rom might interfere with your current rom. That is why most will tell you to flash back to stock, do a master clear, and then flash a new rom.
Your best bet is to keep on flashing roms til you find the one you like, I get 20 hours of normal use with the current rom I'm on, Doc's rom.
Maybe you could use CWM to make a nandroid backup of your stock ROM setup as you like it. That way you can revert back to stock when needed, but not have to reinstall all your apps. Just a thought; someone please correct me if I'm mistaken.
Sent from Andromeda 1.0 using XDA App
It might be worth considering the option to flash a custom ROM that supports OC/UV, and tweak around voltages, cap the max speed to something a little lower, and turn to EDGE when not in need of heavy data.
This might be easier than switching between ROMs.
thanks for the suggestions!
is this what a nandroid back up is? an image of the entire handset?
does this restore modem and kernels? thanks

No nandroids do not backup and restore kernels or modems.
I've yet to flash a custom ROM but I do have a custom kernel which has CWM3 (Advanced Voodoo v666.2) and the stock JS3 ROM.
Am I alright to just disable voodoo and flash the custom ROM right from there without any problem?
Secondly, if I'm moving to a custom ROM that is based off of the ROM that I have installed, is a data wipe still necessary and if it is, will I still have the nandroid backups just in case it fails?
Lastly, are all or most of the popular custom ROMs theme-able with any type of theme ment for, say, a JS3-based ROM for instance, is it custom-ROM specific, or does and froyo theme work with any froyo ROM?
Thank you for your advice and help. Sorry if these questions have been asked, I have looked quite a bit before asking.
If you have a 2e kernel & CWM, then you're good to go for flashing. Pretty much every cooked ROM will have instructions that say to disable lagfixes before flashing a new ROM as a precaution.
The first time you flash a flavour of cooked ROM, it's suggested to do the wipe. You might not run into problems without it, but I always backup my sdcard (along with titanium backups) before flashing a new ROM. Have never used nandroid to recover my phone's last good state. Then again with some of the issues I've had with mine, those woulnd't have helped to much anyways!
You'd have to check the theme you want to use to see if it's compatible with the ROM you're about to flash. The big name ROMs and themes usually work.
I'm not sure how to check and see if I have 2e recovery. I recently had to repartition and I went straight to this kernel. I'm not going to assume that this kernel would have 2e as part of the kernel even though it updates CWM.
(edit)The kernel is advanced voodoo v666.1 +2 should that mean that the +2 is the 2e recovery?
If you have voodoo, then you 2e.
If you can load CWM, then for all purposes you have 2e
Ok, I flashed over to Darky's 9.2 with voodoo 5.4.1 along with a custom notification window (the cartoon chick from Jumba) and the green and black market. If I could post screens, I would, but for now, I just want to say thanks.
I've read up several threads on this an I think what I want to do is a bit unique but I am not completely sure. I rooted my phone with Odin a week ago going from official gingerbread and used the stock Kernel. Root went off without a hitch but wasn't able to get into CWM recovery so I did some searching and just now flashed to the Corn Kernel 7.05. Works Perfect !
I want to now use mobile Odin to try out a few new roms as I can upgrade my phone now but want to give this a shot to breath some new life into my nearly 2 year old cappy. Flashing the kernel with mobile odin was s snap but I guess after reading the how and developers page I am lost on what types of ROM's I use with it. I'm new to all of this so judging stages of stability if not something I am sure about. I want some I wont have to compromise much with but will broaden my horizons some. I am so new cyanogen and maybe doc's ICS mod are the only ones I really know about but I don't know if those work with Odin or if I need to use CMW.
So final questions are these:
- Mod that will be stable and I can flash using only mobile odin or CMW (not using a PC) ?
- Does creating a backup of the ROM in CMW allow me to fix a bad ROM flash ?
- Is there an ICS build for cappy that will work for my situation ?
Thanks again ! ( I promise I used the search function and even the mobile odin thread but couldn't find what I was looking for)

1. You can basically flash almost anything that isn't stock through CWM; you don't really need mobile odin too much. There are a lot of things considered "stable" that may not be stable for you. I considered alpha CM9 "stable," but others may disagree. It is up to you to find a ROM that suits you the best.
Keep in mind, you can only use Mobile Odin on Samsung-based BML ROMs.
2. To fix a "bad" ROM flash, you'd probably just flash the ROM again. But you can use the backup to restore your phone to its exact state at time of backup (with few exceptions).
3. What exactly is your situation? No matter what, I recommend CM9 nightlies but there certainly are other things out there to try that could work for you. Everything is CWM flashable, no Odin.
Just wondering, why can't you use a computer at all? You may need one in case you screw something up down the road.

1. Thank for clearing that up. I was using mobile odin at first because I wasn't able to boot into recovery with CWM but with the corn kernel that fixed everything and I've been getting myself more accustomed to working in there. Mobile odin seemed good for me to flash the new kernel easily and care free.
2. I was worried about a bad flash because I've read that using nandroid backups can be iffy (That's what CWM uses from what I have seen). Should I trust these backups ? I backed up everything in TiBu. I looked at the Wiki for cyanogen mod and it seems odd that the steps to flash the ROM's in CWM are very few so having few steps makes me think they have left something out or there is a step that is somehow understood I am missing)
3. I live in the boonies and my internet is even slower even though it's *cringe* 1.5 DSL haha. As far as my situation I mean something that would allow me to mess around with my phone some while knowing its stable because with 3 kids and having to have my phone I didn't want to be out of pocket for an extended period of time. I've been reading that ICS requires you to go back to stock to flash another ICS ROM but in my mind that doesn't seem too inconvenient.
I come from the desktop world and work well with hardware, not so much with software knowledge so trying to teach myself some new stuff since mobile seems to be here to stay. Making just a rudimentary app is a goal of mine even if no one cares so starting at the beginning trying to learn. Don't want to be one of those guys the noob video is made for who just begs for the way to root a phone and never contributes haha.
Thanks for your help !
Hi I am new to this "romming" business. For my u9000 I installed UtterChaos kernel .32. Most to the roms require .35 kernel. And when I try to install SUT LR 1.8 it never works with windows 8 64 bit. I do have CWM Recovery, and I do have superuser permissions. But for some reason when I try to flash a different kernel like CK Kernel Lebay edition, the whole device gets stuck at boot. Yes I have wiped data, cache and davlik. before doing so. I had to then remove the batteries and put them back to start the phone in download mode to replace the boot image from a back up then go do a CWM restore. And I have tried doing factory resets but the UC kernel boot wont change.
Bottom line is, I AM LOST and I will be using this phone for a long time and I can use a way out of this and I need to find a very fast and stable rom with all working features.
What I have:
- .32 kernel
- UtterChaos kernel
- Custom SU
- CWM Recovery
What I need (please help):
- To get rid of UC kernel (boot, etc...)
- .35 kernel (if possible)
- SUT LR for Windows 8 64bit (if possible)
- A really good rom for heavy gaming, performance, stability, something other than GB (preferably JB or ICS)
I may be asking for too much, and sorry if I am, but I can use some help with this phone right about now.
Thanks in advance!
My answer
You can get 35.7 kernel here, depending on what rom you wish to use. Just flash it along with your preferred rom.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1919097&highlight=kernel
For the rom, it really depends on your preference, because the performance is mostly the same between all the JB roms, smooth enough if you don't install lots of apps that stay in the background. Currently, I'm using the XperienceXperia JB rom. It's about as good as the other JB roms, just with Xperia stuff. Also, make sure that you don't put too much load on it, because it might freeze. No kind of software would be able to magically turn our phone into a gaming powerhouse, because it has an old, outdated gpu to start with. So, don't think about running games like Asphalt 8, because it probably wouldn't run.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2479460
I'm not aware of a Win8 x64 compatible SUT LR, but I don't think you'd need it for anything besides flashing stock roms.
By the way, what rom are you using now? If you flash a cm10 (JB) designed kernel to a GB rom, it would definitely cause problems.
Sorry for the long reply, I don't know how to make it simpler.
THANKS
Hi thanks very much I am using the stock rom. Thank you sir :good:
And I suppose for any rom I flash the corresponding kernel first before I flash a rom?

I'm not sure about the order myself, but I usually flash the rom first, then the kernel. I do this everytime I want to flash a rom, and I've never had any problems. Have you tried flashing one of the JB roms for this device? If you haven't tried, remember to wipe data and cache before flashing the rom, and backup your current rom just in case something goes wrong.
