Hi.
I had a thoughts here... It's possible to use the N1 as bluetooth GPS.

Hi guys! Thanks for the feedback.
The reason i'm asking this is I have an iPad (yes it's a Apple gadget )
the Ipad doesn't have build in GPS. But I can use iPhone apps on the iPad.
So if i mount a bluetooth GPS device i can use TomTom on the iPad.
I have manage to pair a external bluetooth GPS to the iPad and TomTom works fine.
But it's easier for me to use N1 as an GPS modul.
Maybe this made more sense

Not to flame, just curious! How is it more convenient to use the ipad as a gps unit? Why not just use google nav? I could see it being super useful if you have say a nice sturdy car mount for your ipad but thats about all i can think of.
Oh, just noticed youre not in the US :\ is google nav not enabled in your country?
Hi Mike.
The reason i want to use tomtom is i like tomtom
The second reason is it support offline maps, local POI etc. etc. etc.
My plan is not to use the iPad as a main GPS unit in my car
But I like to explore new stuff.. so it would be nice if that was possible to do.

Ahh i see that screen would make an awesome nav unit hehe. You would probably need a developer to make an application to use it as a bluetooth gps. Since it will probably need root to run it might be harder to find a developer since these things are harder to sell :\

i plan to buy a bluetooth gps receiver.
i just have some question before buying one
- will any bluetooth gps receiver work with niki? are there known receivers that will not work?
- i currently have a mapking software on niki and a map of my city, is the bluetooth gps receiver all i need for it to work? by work i mean it'll tell you where you are, where to go, etc...
thanks!
I have an adapt AD-350 bluetooth GPS receiver.
Works like a dime! It 'only' cost me 50 euro's (dixons, the netherlands).
Works with any app that can use GPS, (for all I know).

Can I use these with Google Map? I mean that I don't need TomTom or another program at all?
I use this, "http://www.bluenext.co.uk/bluetooth-gps/bn-806f-bluetooth-gps.html"
works real good, it's real fast, good battery and have the last chip sirf star III, and of course all this for a good price
How to setup
Could someone tell me how to setup GPS connection over Bluetooth? I have a Nokia GPS which was working on normal HTC Touch and I just can't get it work on Nike... This is what I did:
1. Turn on GPS
2. Turn on Bluetooth on Nike
3. Search for BT device, Nokia is found
4. Enter code
5. Select serial port (the only port offered)
6. I create an outgoing port (e.g. COM2) for Nokia (in settings/connections/setting/bluetooth)
7. I set GPS program port to the previously created outgoing port in setting/system/External GPS)
8. I set GPS port number in iGO...
What did I wrong? Please help me.
Thank you in advance
That's all correct. I can't see what's the problem there.
Me neither... On my old iPaq (WinMo 2003) is a lot easier to connect as there is a connect feature in Bluetooth manager. In WinMo 2006 there is no such possibility... How can a bluetooth connection to GPS initialized without iGO? How could I connect from Windows to test the connection?
mapping software
i live in the us where can i get a free mapping software with map? because i dont want to access any data...
Yes, the Athena has built-in GPS. But compared to other phones and stand-alone units, the GPS receiver is weak (and not sirf star). My old Palm with a wired external sirf star GPS receiver is way better - locks on in seconds from the middle of the first floor of my house.
So, has anyone here tried a bluetooth or USB GPS receiver?
Yes, I tried Holox Bluetooth GPS receiver, it works just fine and as this is 44 channels it is more powerful (It connects faster and better quality reception), I don't think you will have any problems with that, you just have to make sure that you change settings in you navigation software so that it connects the bluetooth one rather than the built in GPS receiver.
Thanks, I'm thinking of getting the Holux. That's what my wired GPS is. Then again, I might just get the 4-in-1 cable and try to use my wired Holux that I already have.
The built-in GPS failed me twice this past weekend when I really needed it, which is why I'm thinking of using an external receiver for road trips from now on.
I have the Dell BT332 (Globalsat) paired with the 7501 and it works
as well as it did with my Axim51v.

Another device to bring with you? Let's pray that when thief steals the phone, they take both devices with them so that your WIMP could still tell you where your phone is
A BT GPS receiver would stay in the car - plug it in, pair the BT, and forget it. When I'm in the car it would automatically connect. I would still use the built-in GPS (when it works) when walking.
I could still set WIMP to use the internal GPS...

There are also other similar products, such as the Phone Theft Alarm by Carty Studio.
An even better alternative, doing a bit more than WIMP, is spb sprite terminator. Easy to google this. I like this the most.

Err,
Sorry, it's Ultimate Theft Alert, not Phone theft alarm.
My Nook Color just won't stop to impress me. I knew it can be used as a GPS unit, but I haven't taken the time to try it out, but I finally did it:
I am now seriously thinking of creating a car mount for it using Shapeways ...
Let people know if you get something generic done for a car mount for the Nook I am sure there would be some takers on here if the price is not too bad
It would look cooler in satellite view...
Also, for my fellow newbies, this requires a connection to a GPS unit or GPS-equipped cell phone, because the Nook does NOT have a GPS chip.
Nook Car Mount
There's a nice car mount over on ebay. Just search for "car mount holder docking station for noble nook color". I would post a photo and link, but am a new forum member and not allowed to do so until I have 8 posts.
impressive, I should have my NC by the end of the week, can't wait!
This is great... but it uses the GPS signal from a rooted Android phone, and over wi-fi, correct?
Has the community figured out a way to pair a rooted Nook with one of the many Bluetooth GPS receivers (those hockey puck devices)?
Heck yeah, always so annoyed to have my phone tied up by the GPS when im driving, hellooooooooo solution. Even better: no battery drain on bluetooth!
how do i pair this with my iPhone?

I read from another forum that someone already got Bluetooth GPS to work using this app:

However, he complaint that the BT receiver has to be right next to the Nook Color for it to work, so it may not be the best setup.

Sorry, the short answer is I don't know.
Technically, it's possible because all it needs is a server on your iPhone, and a client on your Nook Color. But I couldn't find one that work across platform. If you know how to programme, it shouldn't be too difficult to write one.
As for Bluetooth support, it's possible -- I did not try it myself personally, but as I said in an earlier post, I've heard a success story from another forum.
Software
What mapping software is running on the nook? Is it doing the vocals? I bought a Haicom HI-408BT to use bluetooth gps. I need to see about a good mapping software to go with it.
I purchased the following unit from Amazon for $17:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000E336YK
I had few expectations given the price, but have been quite surprised. The thing paired with my Nook immediately right out of the box. The 'Bluetooth GPS' app (free from the Market) recognized and connected to the device on the first try. It did take about 10 minutes to get a GPS lock the first time I turned it on, but now takes less than two minutes each time I fire it up. Works great with Google Maps (tested with cached map tiles while driving) and Locus Pro (purchased from the Market). There is also no real range problem with the Bluetooth connection - I stuck the receiver on my windshield visor and had the Nook sitting in the passenger seat and maintained the Bluetooth connection.
I have only had it for two days, but am amazed at how well it has worked so far.
Just wanted to throw this out in case anyone is interested in uber-cheap GPS. Amazon seems to be out of these units, but you can find them for a comperable price elsewhere.
Cheers.
Any way to put the Nook Color on the windshield? I am interested in using it as a GPS also.
Seems your post has knocked them out of stock most everywhere, and others are raising their prices. I'd rather just get a Holux for a few dollars more with what they are trying to charge for these things now. I'm still going to just wait until I figure out how to make my WM6.1 phone, or my E71 symbian phone send out a bluetooth GPS signal that my Nook can find.

and

The combo works great. I bought some velcro patches that you can stick on things, and so i have the GPS mounted to the back of the holder, with the Nook obviously fitting in the front. This keeps the GPS inches away from the nook (while maintaining a clear sky view), preventing any BT range issues. I use it with CoPilot live, and it works perfectly (oh, and the Bluetooth GPS app from the market).
I will try to get a photo tonight for ya'll...

Goodness your right...price jacked up everywhere. Can't find one for less than about $30 shipped anymore. Bummer. I also tested this with Copilot and it works great. I am most impressed with the Bluetooth range...I can put the receiver just about anywhere and still keep the connection to the nook.
Regarding your WM phone...I have an old WM 6.5 Standard (i.e. non-touchscreen) phone and spent a long time trying to get this to work. I could not find any way to make it fly, but there are some free programs out there for older touchscreen WM phones that will allow GPS data output over BT or Wifi. Getting the nook to connect will be the tricky part. Just look around and you will find what you need to give it a go.

I've been giving it a go, believe me! But your post may have given me a clue... If you couldn't make it work either, I think I may know what the problem is. With my particular phone, I'm only able to output the signal over bluetooth through COM1: Everything else is used up. With the E71 symbian phone, I don't know which COM port is being used. I suspect that the bluetooth GPS software I've been trying on the Nook is only looking at a particular COM: port. If I could figure out how to make it look at some others, I suspect it would start receiving data on one of them.

i would give you one million billion pretend dollars if you would explain how you did that. one million billion.
If you have android phone, you can use it as a free Bluetooth GPS
On the phone:
- ShareGPS (for Android 2.2) or
- BlueNMEA (for CM7)
both are free in the Market
On the Nook:
- Bluetooth GPS (free)
Otherwise, you can use TetherGPS over wifi, costed $3 though.

I don't want an android phone until I can buy one of good quality from overseas that ATT can't recognize. There are plenty of cheap android phones out there in china, but they are all terrible quality. Right now my motorola WM6.1 has better voice quality than 99% of phones and that is most important to me.

Nope. With a BT GPS, all you need is one of mnay free BT GPS apps, and you are good to go. In the Development settings, you do have to turn on "mock locations", but that is a one time deal and 5 seconds. One you fire up the app to connect to the receiver, the system receives location information as if the BT was built in.
Just tried it. Here's what I have:
Nook Color with Phiremod 5.3
- installed Bluetooth GPSProvider
Motorola Dext (Cliq), with adxlmod (I think) - Android 2.1
- installed ShareGPS
Everything paired and I got the Nook to display my location correctly. I'm still at work, so not driving anywhere, but will give it a shot later.
I don't have data on my phone, so I might have to get copilot live to actually be useful.
I wouldn't jump on CoPilot Live just yet. I downloaded it yesterday after hearing about several people running it on their Nooks. Apparently the new version has introduced a problem with tablets without an IMEI number. I emailed tech support and they said that they hope to have a fix by early next week. I'd wait until then to download the app. As soon as I receive the update and can confirm that it's working, I will post it, but right now it won't work unless you still have an older version.
Use GPS2Blue or Flash Android!

I successfully used GPS2Blue on my AT&T Tilt (HTC Kaiser) years ago and connected it to a Nokia 770 and a Motion LE1600 Win tablet. I seem to recall that I had to try different COM ports in Tilt/GPS2Blue until it would work. Unfortunately, I now have Android flashed on the Tilt or I would try it for you.
I flashed Android to the SIM-less Tilt just so that I could use it as a remote GPS with my NC!
Good luck!

Windows Phone 8 does not Support external GPS Receivers. Certain Apps could implement compatibility themselves but only those Apps would be able to use it. I guess noone will go to those lengths given that all devices have a GPS Receiver built in. Here Maps definitely won't.

I think this is an error as the internal GPS is really battery consuming, while using a BT GPS makes it possible to have battery lasting a lot more. For example if you go hicking or running you cannot recharge (well if you have a solar charger yes, but ....)
I think WP should allow having this implemented. My old N78 (symbian) did and I was really happy with it. I guess I should go to user voice and ask for such an issue
