Ever since I updated to Froyo (FRF50 then 72 and now 80), my gallery performance has been dreadful. The gallery app will usually sit with a blank background for a few minutes without loading pictures. Other times it shows the folders but doesn't show thumbnails of pictures inside. I've deleted most of the pictures thinking I might have had too many but this hasn't helped.
The problem also manifests itself when I try to view a picture I just took. When I touch the thumbnail to view the previous picture taken, it usually takes 20+ seconds to load the picture.
I know the gallery app has many problems already (slow, dithering, etc), but this severely reduces the utility of my phone. Anyone else have this problem?

Your not the only one
The gallery app needs to be cleaned up. It feels like a Beta.
The peak option is inaccurate, the Picasa albums are never consistent , the loading times are laughable considering the post JIT abilities.
Its nice they went to Cooliris for help but even on desktops there stuff is bloated and often choppy. They have better ideas than coders.
Still the best looking app in the mobile market outside of the ipad. But its nowhere on the same planet as fast or smooth. Even with downgraded quality its still cant hang.
I also experienced the same issues listed above. I really hate taking a picture and then going to the gallery to look at the picture I just took just to have to wait 10+ seconds for the picture to load. This is really embarrassing when iPhone users are around.
I like that the compression seems better for the images in the gallery, but I don't know if it is worth waiting an extra couple seconds.
Does anyone else have any issues with pinch to zoom on the gallery? Namely when you pinch and leave your fingers there the picture seems to "float" and continue to scroll even if your fingers aren't moving.
It's especially bad since I also have an ipad, and working with pictures on it is nothing short of spectacular. It never bogs down no matter how many pictures I've got on it. The multitouch tracks not only enlarging the picture but panning, all at the same time.
I've taken to using JustPictures! instead of the gallery app until they fix it.
Honestly, the gallery is super fast after upgrading from 2.1 to frf83.

Beg to differ. Have a few hundred images on a class 10 card. Never had a problem loading the album on eclair but with FroYo it takes forever. . .and, when I scroll through the images, it forgets ones it already loaded.

Hence my pessimism.
They made it worse with Froyo. Who knows when the hell theyll get around to fixing it.
Should we find an open ticket on codes.google and the help forum and draw attention to it ?
((tried just pictures...No MT and really laggy when scrolling..is this your experience ?...looking for other MT galleries.))

seriously, Mine is fast, and the camera is snappy too. When I switch angles on the camera, the screen is instantaneous too.
here is a youtube of my gallery:
it was way slower on eclair for me.

I think it makes a difference if you had a class 6 or class 2
Same issue for me (FRF50 then 72 and now 83), I have a class 6 SD-Card.
Same here, used to be nearly instant with 2.1update1, now I hv to wait for it to "loading new albums and photos". I just wanna see the pic I've just taken! Or just a glance of a jpg file from the file manager!

Yeah but I don't know the difference between the 2 .
I can just say that my gallery is faster with froyo.
On FRY83.
Before i tried to mess with the folders with photos/videos and trying to add ".nomedia" into the folder to reduce loading time..
After above action..the loading time getting worst..from 4-5 sec (see icon folder) to a minute of blur background screen .
I deleted a lot and that helped
BTW biggest pic on froyo i've seen is 3,9MB i thought it was like 2/3MB before...
I don't notice the gallery problem posted, but I do notice the camera app at night seems to show red and blue lines. When I was in Orlando I took a night shot of the Disney castle months ago and then again just recently with froyo it turned into ****. Any place there was supposed to be just night sky (black) it showed lines during viewing in and after the camera snapped the pic. I will upload pics in a few min. to show.
The red castle was before froyo
The Blue just recently with froyo
Its hard to see on my laptop but very visible on my n1 and my laptops lcd.
It also does not happen with anything else on my n1 just in the camera mode and the pics it takes at night.

ya it isnt good
Here is how my N1 w/ FRF83 loads the gallery even with minimal pictures, it still seems like it got hung up a bit.
I'm on FRF50 and i have another problem.
When pinch zooming the photo move around, I don't know how explain, but before the manual update, i was able to pinch zoom without problem, now is imposssible, because when i put two fingers on the screen the photo start moving up/down/left/right, and become worst if i try to zoom.

I have no clue what happened....my galaxy was working fine...laggy a bit, but nothing i cant handle. I was at a club last night and recorded a 20 mins video...its saved. So as of this mornign my galaxy has been crawlingggg to load things....everything is either delayed or going really slow. NoLed is slow, chomp sms popup is slow....this phone is starting to commit suicide or something....any ideas why my phone started to all of a sudden lag alot?....when it didnt before???....and no lag fix is not a option for me.
Back up the video on your pc then delete it from the phone and see if that restores it back to its original speed.

yes i have and am now trasnferring the video...but Kies is taking sooooo long to do so. Its a real pain. I hope it was lagging cause of the massive amounts of videos i have...we shall see. (if i can get the video transferred)
if you're rooted you can try adjusting the minfree settings using the minfree app

This is what happened to my galaxy s as well. I have no recovery mode and root/lag fix was not an option for me till i found my solution step by step. I applied One click lag fix and it become so much smoother and faster. Sms notification has no delay even on Chomp Sms. =) The hardware of Galaxy S was good, but the firmware is a problem.

i have auto killer and i just use stock task manager...as alot of people have been saying other task managers are useless cause Android OS is designed to handle it....confused....
the stock task manager is not that great, and the widget only works on the stock launcher.
the task manager the one i linked you can setup white list and black list
so it will automatically allow what to run, and kill what should not be running on its own
I wouldn't of used Kies to make the transfer, should've used a mass storage and transferred it using windows explorer. Also, I'd advocate against the task manager. I haven't used one on the SGS in about 2 months, back when I did I never let it run 24/7, sometimes I'd manually open it and kill almost all tasks. Task killers, such as ATK, will almost surely hurt your battery life if you let them run in the background, in fact, I'd even bet on it.
These days, I try to keep all my favorite programs in the background (unless they use CPU while idle, but even GTalk is great on battery life, as is LauncherPro and the widgets I have elected to keep). As long as you use the same 10-20 apps you should be fine, even if you use more you might be fine but not quite as good depending on how many apps you have loaded and storage space you use in total.
Since I highly doubt that the file size was huge and would overload the system, I wonder if a bug either sprang up and/or (maybe more likely) you created a hardware problem such as overheating your phone and processor and are now having issues. If nothing else works, try to back up all your apps and info to an SD card and then do a factory reset. If your problems continue then it's hardware.
Now I dont know whether to.keep the task apps or not lol...2 different opinions here...

The lagfixes don't increase the amount of writes to the internal SD and they certainly don't break it. Any of the lagfixes in the FAQ (see my sig) are well tested and nearly 100% safe. I would definitely recommend to either use voodoo or the modded version that uses the stock-kernel. You won't believe your eyes.
The reason your phone got so damn slow was because of RFS. The camera APP caches on the /data partition and when it does so, it created a massive amount of file system errors (a related thread can be found here).

Don't many developers etc say not to run task killers? They actually cause more drain on the phone and battery?
http://lifehacker.com/5650894/andro...ed-what-they-do-and-why-you-shouldnt-use-them
Note, however, that this is still a contested notion. A lot of developers (including ROM builder extraordinaire, Cyanogen) will not even look at your bug reports if you're using a task killer. In this humble blogger's opinion, your best bet is to stay away from regular task killer usage entirely.

think about it logically, you do nothing to the phone and it lags like hell
or you can install legit software which easily lets you choose what to run and what not to run
result: system is squeaky clean and snappy fast
vs.
do nothing: system lags like hell, come to the forum complain the phone lags and claim other people are right we should do nothing and have an unusable phone.
Well the lag on my phone is minimal, it actually performs quite well. My phone died without any lag fixes etc, so I am not putting any of that on now. My problem is GPS is useless and the random shutdowns.
Hi, I'm using Cyanogenmod 10.1.2 stable version with the kernel that comes with this release.
I noticed a strange problem, every time I'm saving something to internal memory, phone slows down.
Example: I take a picture and I want to share it via WhatsApp, everything slows down, even gets unresponsive for 20 seconds. The same thing happens when I take a screenshot, or when I download / update any app.
Apart from that, the phone doesn't seem to have any other problems.

The phone isn't the fastest thing in the world but the behavior your describing isn't quite "normal".
For a start, in my opinion the CM native kernel is a little slow, I'm gonna ask you to try Iodak kernel (for now) to see if helps.
Flash 9.5 from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2270308
I'd eventually try an app to measure the IO performance in the internal memory for comparing, but I can't think of an app now (no access to play store atm), so let us know if anything changes after flashing Iodak kernel.

Sorry, I forgot to mention that this kind of behavior happened on stock ROM as well as on CM with Iodak and Werewolf kernel. My friend was using stock CM10 kernel on her phone and everything seemed fast enough so I tried it also but the problem remains.
EDIT:
I ran this benchmark: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.passmark.pt_mobile
My results for internal storage write were 11,9 MBytes/Sec and for reading: 31,7 MBytes/Sec

Do you notice that behavior only with WhatsApp? Can you give us more examples?
Also, you can use AndroBench (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.andromeda.androbench2) and post the results?
I'm thinking that something else is causing the lag, WhatsApp sometimes just hangs on me for a while (also uses sdcard to store logs).

WhatsApp works fine when I'm sending a picture that was previously saved.
This kind of behavior happens also with Kik, Facebook messenger, and in general;
When I update any application, the phone becomes almost unresponsive for 10-20 seconds, every single time.
Here is the screenshot from androbench: https://db.tt/KAoi3zoX
I created this screenshot and it took 10 seconds for the phone to start reacting normally again..

I experienced lots of different behaviors, sometimes even with the same configuration. Becoming unresponsive for a while when updating apps isn't uncommon. I experience that, I'm sure lot's of users around here do. You could try changing the sdcard readahead to 2048 and see if makes a difference (or to 1024, etc..) and see what configuration your friend's phone is using. You can also use Kernel Tuner, Performance Control or any tweaking app which allows you to change governors / cpu frequencies / sdcard readahead to changes these things.
Also, OOM values can also influence the user experience (these can be checked / changes using Kernel Tuner for example).
Will run Androbench soon as I can and i will post and compare.
Update:
Alright here's mine - Although there are differences (specially on the sequential write), I don't think it's exactly that, that is causing your issue.
Can more users do the test with Androbench and post their results ?

It happened on stock ROM and on CM 10.1.2 stable (with iodak kernel and with cm kernel).

In my opinion, I'd use CM 10.1.2 stable (android 4.2.2), runs fantastic and everything works. If your brother wants to give a go at KitKat, go ahead, but stability? CM10.1.2. For sure.
There's also a couple Stock roms around here and the web, there's one called "JBS (just better stock), google it it's light and fast.
By now many of you might've seen this or a similar article already: SamMobile - Poor RAM management affecting the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge
Disabled apps list in Post #9
From my understanding, the OS is over-aggressively causing apps to close in order to retain some sort of free amount of RAM. Could be a memory leak caused by Lollipop or something else, not sure. And just like the article OP said, unused RAM is wasted RAM on Android because it's Linux. Not Windows. So I'm failing to see the issue.
Have you guys been seeing a direct correlation between low amounts of current RAM and Android closing background apps more aggressively over time?
Have your phones been getting slower?
I'm not saying I found a solution but since running the Debloater tool using my own customized set of "disabled" apps, I have managed to free up about 400-500mb of RAM on average. Again the goal of Android isn't to consistently have tons of free RAM and close all the apps because Android is not Windows. But we have been seeing 3GB of RAM getting easily filled up even just after a reboot (well I have). Our phones shouldn't be using the full 3GB of RAM just after boot even with Touchwiz (especially after Samsung's quest to reduce the bloatedness of Touchwiz).
Those more knowledgeable than I please comment!
Anyway, here is my current RAM usage screenshot after disabling those apps I told you about. Not too shabby and I have noticed a bit zippier speeds, especially from screen off to launcher using the fingerprint lock.
This is the built in Touchwiz "RAM booster" that I accidentally found.

I will post the modified list of apps to use with that debloater tool when I get some time to re-review it. Originally I used someone elses list but quickly found out that they basically ripped apart the OS with actually causing any FC's. But they also left out important things like the Play Store and others. I don't want to do that to you guys or myself again.
About 800mb free at the moment. I do notice that it spikes upon wake (from about 800 free to 500 free) but quickly resets back near 800. I don't aggressively close apps or anything else like that, so this is after a whole day of video playback, play music, browsing, and phone/text.
So far I haven't noticed any significant memory leak, or at least one that's affecting performance.
I've seem the ram booster somewhere, but can't find it now. Where did you find it.
Sent from my SM-G925V using XDA Free mobile app
mine is generally 800-900 free with no personal interaction on closing anything. i have never touched that stuff. i have not noticed any sluggishness that would make me check RAM and havent even disabled anything but the Verizon labeled stuff.
not saying a technical look doesnt show an issue but as just using it i have not noticed a problem.
How do we get the app sammobile has?
Verizon didnt give it to us

That's good, so that means it isn't everyone. Or at least you haven't done enough on the phone to cause it to basically consume all of the RAM. I know on my white 32gb Edge that I would often only have 200mb free. But since I exchanged that for my 64gb sapphire things have been better. Not sure why.
Either way I'm going to compile the the list from 119 into much less, maybe 70-80, momentarily. Just as to help debloat.
Here's a better list of apps that can be disabled. I added back in several apps that the majority of people would normally use. There may be some that you wouldn't personally use, but just keep in mind some people do. This isn't the ultimate debloat by any means but it does strip out a lot of stuff while leaving the good stuff in tact. Yes there are a couple Verizon things that I left out because some people do actually want to see their account on their phone, etc.
I hope this helps.
In the program, right click on "read device packages" and go to import and import this text file. MAKE SURE TO UNCHECK ALL OF YOUR PERSONAL APPS OR THEY WILL AUTOMATICALLY GET DISABLED. They will be listed as "base.apk" files.

I have my back button setup to do "kill app" for a long press. And for some reason when I long press it while in the launcher it pulls up the RAM booster. I've not been able to find it anywhere else. It was purely by accident that I found this lol.

Good find. I just set the back button up to "kill app" with a single tap. It will bring up the RAM booster if I long press the back button in the launcher also.
One of the most common signs is memory loss, especially forgetting recently learned information. But i don't face this problem yet.
Just read about an update pushing out to EU S6/Edge devices that (reportedly) fix the memory leak issues. No other word on any other changes, but it's only about 140mb so there can't be that many changes.
Never been crazy about positing external links here, so if you're interested in reading about it just Google it.
First off, let me apologize if this isn't in the right forum. I come on here every once in a blue moon.
I've reloaded 4.4.2 on my at&t s4 active i537. The first couple times because I've tried different safestrap ROM's and they've all failed. Most recently due to the 5.0.1 lollipop update. I hate it with a burning passion. I feel like if Windows 8 and Apple IOS had a baby, it's name would be lollipop. But I digress.
So anyway, during this process of reloading my stock NE3 rom, I didn't save my pictures to my desktop therfore after a factory reset, they were gone.(thanks TTB for not backing up the sole purpose of the app). So I grabbed an app off the play store called "disk digger". It really an amazing app. It searched through my phone and got every single PNG and JPEG photo I have on my phone, even the ones from my Samsung infuse (I'm using the same SD card). But the only issue is that theyre all squares. They're not the full ratio pictures that they were originally in, but they're the safe 1080p pictures that were taken.
For example, I had used snapsave and had hundreds of automatically saved photos wich I thought were gone. But lone behold, they appeared in this disk digger app. But they were square photos and not the original rectangular ones. It's almost like they're just thumbnails.
So my question here is, if they're somehow still on my phone, how do I get them In there original form?
Thank you in advance.

First off, let me apologize if this isn't in the right forum. I come on here every once in a blue moon.

First of all your on the wrong section. Try to post in correct section so that you'll get appropriate help.
So, Were those photos on external SD card?
They are "remrants" of the photos. The thumbnails saved in temp maybe?

When you formated original copies, were they in internal memory or external?
If they were in external, then there's a software that can help you recover photos in original size.

I had original posted this in XD player forum or something like that. I don't know how it got there but long story short, I reported it and the admin sent it here.
Otherwise I have no clue where they were put originally . I do know that the photos on my SD card that are in DCIM are in the results that are generated by the app and are full. Pictures. I also know that there are stock pictures that from the apps. (like arrows and logos that are put in the app code or whatever by the app creator). I don't understand how these can be there if I had factory reset the phone.
I know disk digger gives the option to select internal and external. When I select external., it came up with over 7000 photos, most of them are the ones I want but are in the format I explained in the original post.

Usually apps create its directories into internal storage. DiskDigger and other android apps doesn't extract images into it's original form.
I know a computer software that can extract your images in its original form.
You should check this once.
It works on windows.
You have to connect your SD card with the help of card reader.
Scan and recover.
Below is the direct link to download software.
fs37.filehippo.com/5406/cb2c01f67d5b4f9096af0dfd91d5e4cb/pci_filerecovery.exe
(Just copy above and paste it in your browser)
Hope this would help you.
I've noticed there is a memory leak after using the device for long periods of time, it's becoming a bit slow and closes a lot of apps that it shouldn't.
Also, opening the camera and using it a little, makes all apps to be reloaded.
I honestly don't feel this has 6 gb of ram, Huawei need to solve those issues, let's make them aware

I'm not sure why no on is replying to you. I have the Mate 20 X and I noticed this as well. All of my apps were refreshing the other day. My Google Podcast app even closed while I was doing something else. And I couldn't even jump back and forth between two apps without them refreshing. Then I started getting a camera error and it wouldn't go away until I rebooted. After rebooting, everything was fine. Rinse and repeat. This has happened to me several times. While it's nice to know that a reboot fixes it, it's a pretty bad memory leak. I have the International model, so I don't see an update coming any time soon.

It's not a memory leak.... The data collection buffer gets full, and a reboot resets this. China intelligence FTW.

I've noticed that the camera and 3D live maker, kills all apps after 2 minutes of using those.
I remember the gs7e has done the same but camon, it's annoying that I'll open the camera, and everything will be reloaded.
Also besides Hauwei, Google made some improvements to the memory management in Android Pie, that could be also one of the reasons why.
I get non of this and the lack of replies proves the fact it doesn't exist. I have used mine since I received it with zero slow down.
The apps closing is because of the management of apps in the background. You can set the apps manually so they can run in the background.
This is done by "AI" so if you manage them manually you set them to run in the background and they won't get killed.

Your phone is faulty or you're trolling. The pixel 3 is crap, what you're describing here doesn't exist!
Having the same issue but I don't think it's a memory leak. Just Huawei agressive style of handling ram/apps.
Phone doesn't like anything not installed by defualt.
the memory management is horrifically aggressive. It'll be the thing that makes me get rid of it if I cant sort it out. I'm assuming this has happened with one of the updates as I've watched youtube videos of this phone being amazing on the speed tests and keeping apps in memory. Assume this was either on a pre-release ROM or an early version that reviewers are most likely to use.

My phone wont even do play-store automatic updates overnight while charging (like EVERY other phone i've ever had has been able to do).

You're the only one trolling here. Are you really such a hardcore fanboy that you're incapable of acknowledging that it could be a different software build? Chinese version vs International? I just got an update on my International model yesterday which may or may not have resolved this. It doesn't mean it wasn't a real issue. I have owned just about every major smartphone since the original iPhone, including all of the Mate phones and I also test them for a living. Some of us are actually speaking from experience, not bias.
Issue is there, but using open camera doesn't kill tasks compared to stock app, so it's hauwei aggressive memory management again.
Not noticed anything here, I sometimes have quite a heavy usage, multiple apps. No unintended closed apps. Phone is always very fast. Looking into the phone manager from time to time there's always 95% free.

I'm a one app at once guy... so no problem for me, i always close the app after i use it
The memory management on this phone is definitely rather strange. Yes, you can force specific apps to stay prioritized in the background, but it doesn't seem like there are any benefits to the hyper-aggressive method Huawei employs. What I find irritating isn't the way resident apps are juggled, but the way the app you are using acts like it is being starved of ram all the time. I need to try out a bunch of different browsers, so far the few I have been using feel like I am running a 2015 build of Chrome on a Windows machine with 256 Meg of Ram.
Try removing the stock launcher, and you will see a big difference m

So the stock launcher is the culprit? Any other bloatware that we can remove??

I have the exact same problem on my Mate 20 Pro.
Works great after reboot but after using it I sometimes can't even go to switch app mode and return to app without it reloading. Since it is coming with time used I also think it is a memory mangement problem.
I am on EMUI 9.0.0.153
Removing Huawei launcher via ADB, seems to fix some of it, but it's annoying nonetheless
I have the same issue. After using the device for some time, from Developer Options > Running Services, the System portion consumes most of the memory, leaving very little left for cached processes.

After a reboot, the System memory usages goes down to normal, until normal usage causes it to build up again until another reboot is required.
It definitely looks like some kind of memory leak.
Same issue here. I wish there was a way to schedule a restart overnight.
