hey guys,
I got my car dock a couple days ago and started using it day 1.
impressions:
its sexy but a little hard to move around (prob cuz its new)
but i have a major problem with the nexus one heating up to almost 120 degrees Fahrenheit! and this troubles me cuz i dont want my battery to lose its charge capacity.
and if im on lets say 50% battery and i drive somewhere for 10-15 min using the navi on the car dock
the temp shoots up to 115-120 and the charge goes down to ~30%
anyone else having a problem with overheating while in the car dock?
i used it during the day and night (only to check if the sun was affecting it)
no change in results
i used it with every option on the power control widget off
i ran Advanced task manager and ended all apps before launching navigation
im considered a tech whiz
so ive put this thing through its paces
and they only way to not have my phone burn hotter than the atlanta summer sun is by turning the screen off and listening to the navi...not veiwing it while its on charge and keeping all wireless options and sync off except GPS
ideas greatly appreciated....

after using the n1 and removing it from the car dock the screen was not responsive. couldnt use it to navigate

I also noticed my Nexus heated up to 40-42 degrees C while using GPS with Screen on for 15 minutes. Burning hot.
no one has any problems?
ive been noticing its msotly because of the sun that it gets scorching hot but at night it does rise past 115 degrees F
120 degrees fahrenheit (49 degrees celsius) is not very hot for computer parts. The reason it reaches those temperatures I guess is because of google maps (if you used that for navi). When you use google maps it's almost constantly using your data connection and that is one of the most battery intensive tasks if I remember correctly.
Oh and I wouldn't classify a little over 40 degrees celsius as burning hot, I've been to places hotter than that, but I guess it's subjective
Seems that overheating is mainly an issue for those running Cyanogen's ROM, no?
My N1 can get hotter than 50 Celsius in under 10 minutes. It's really a bit frightening. I have noticed, however, that this ONLY occurs when the battery is not near full. Turning the screen off seems to help cool it down (more testing needed). However, turning off the screen doesn't help when you need it for gps.
I am using cyanogen, but not the cyanogen kernel. Overheating occurs both in sunlight and at night. I believe it occurred while not running google maps as well, but I can't remember for sure.
I've had no problems, but I did notice how hot it was. I figured it was because of the sun since I had it mounted on my window glass.

The issue is that you are trying to charge the phone and use it at the same time. The mechanism for doing this charges the battery and depletes the battery at the same time, this makes a really hot battery.
Keeping the screen off when its not needed in the dock and you will have less heat issues when you need to charge your phone in the car dock.

yeah this car dock i am really getting mad at
i wasted 60 bucks for something that heats the hell out of my phone
i listen to music so loud the bluetooth speaker isnt loud enough to tell me where to turn when the screen is off so...
i guess ill try out enomthers rom with the UV kernal and report back
the major cause of it is the sun
because at night the phone doesnt go over 100 degrees F when using the navi

Does anyone having this problem use "set cpu"?
I had a the same problem because my cpu was set to 998 during charging. so then I had the three main things that cause heat ganging up. battery, gps and cpu. All i did was set the cpu to 806 while charging and the heat problem went away...
I imagine that the stockers don't have this problem because they are under-clocked...
The main problem is the sun. I have Rodriguez's rom with the overclock and the only thing causing it to heat up is the sun.
Setting the CPU lower I will try but on setcpu I don't set it to userspace anymore. Its set to ondemand and no profiles set. Ill set a profile for overheating at 120°F to max 806mhz

So i got the G1 rooted running sparmod 1.15 and its just horrible on my battery would you recomend i buy a stronger battery and btw its not oced so idk what it is its like when it on sleep mode or what ever it destroys my battery
Try a stable system image rather than.... sparmod? whatever that is...
even i am facing the same issue. the battery is causing a major concern for me. need to keep it plugged in through out the day.
can anyone suggest what can be done?

It depends on a few things, included background processes that load the cpu, whether the antenna is trying to gain a 3g signal when its far from one, gps, and battery health. Use 2g networks and turn off gps. That should at least double your battery life. You can also underclock the cpu with a profile in setcpu. Lower brightness as well. Otherwise, get a new battery. After a while, a battery loses charge and will need to be replaced.

Same thing happen when i used to have my G1. Overnight charge and in literally 30-60 minutes it would die.. Do you leave wifi, Bluetooth, Use wireless networks,etc on?
This happened to me when i got mine. Now I can manage to run it for at mot 16 hours (Yes! 16!) The way is get a good ROM. I use SuperBad 2.1 And use the power controls widget. I use Extended Controls. I have everything off when not using. You gotta learn to manage your phone. And the active widgets too.
I do manage my phone GPS wifi there always off brightness is the lowest possible no updates from email no background data or anything

It could be one bad apk. Check settings/applications/running processes!
Mines was Application protection.
Another thing could be to check the physical condition of your battery. Mine's currently looking like () I'm waiting to hear a fizz pop *smoke* then a small fire. Hopefully it's not in my pocket when it happens. I've already ordered a new battery, hopefully it arrives in time.

3 thinks you can do
1)check for a better rom and\or verify if your gps, wi fi and on while this happens
2)Recalibrate your battery
2A Discharge it until it shuts itself off.
2B) Recharge it back to full and then leave it charging for another few hours even after it says it is full
2C)repeat if needed
3)buy a new one...
Okay im going to check out that 2.1 rom and ill check the battery if that doesnt help ill buy a new one
I've noticed something odd since running Wireless Tether; my battery temp gets extremely hot, so much so that when I lifted my phone to do a reboot on it, the paint on my phones battery cover had bubbled up & started to peel. I have a HTC Hero (My Evo got water damage). On the market there's a similar app called "Open Garden" & in the pics it has an option to adjust the Transmit Power, which may or may not help in the battery temp, but upon downloading & installing it to my phone that option is not available.
Has anyone had similar issues while running Wireless Tether? Is there an app or a tweak that can limited how much power the battery pumps out so to speak?
Before the tether my batt tempt was at 100 °F now its jumped up to 115 °F.
I had the same issue a few times when I was charging via USB while I was using Wireless Tether. The battery would get pretty hot but not to the point your describing. And after a while the battery didn't hold a charge. So I've replaced my battery with a new one and since then I've switched to Barnacle Wireless Tether and I don't notice the battery overheating problem anymore. I also don't notice the connection dropping several times a day either like I did when I was using the Wireless Tether.
My Milestone seems to have given up it's ghost.
I was driving along, tracking my position in google maps, and it froze up. After removing/replacing the battery, it will no longer turn on. No M logo, nothing. It was rather hot to touch at the time it crashed (OC'ed to 1ghz, GPS on, charging, GoogleMaps SatelliteView) so I suspect it simply fried itself. Bummer.
In some thread somewhere, someone mentioned to leave the battery out for a while so that an internal capacitor can discharge but no luck.
Anybody else run into this?
It may sound stupid but. Have you tried connecting the charger while the phone is off?
EDIT: the milestone always get very hot when running navigation or maps no matter what you do

I realized that your Milestone is overclocked to 1ghz. What ROM are you using?
It was running HO!NO! CM7.2.0-RC0 at the time, but since any CM-based rom will let you overclock I dont blame the rom.
I'm giving it 24 hours of no battery before trying again, pretty sure the battery had around 70% charge at the time it died.

Yay! It's back! Left it with no battery for 3 days and it powered right up after putting the battery in. Phew!
Bummer though, was looking forward to getting a captivate glide. oh well.
In the middle of September, I've added an option (in CM7 for Milestone) to automatically limit the max CPU frequency when the phone is in Car Dock.
It's there for a reason .
From the changelog (it's there since 7.1.0-RC15-11.09.14):
- added options to limit max CPU frequency when screen is off and when phone is in car dock
(When the phone is in car dock it can easily overheat as there is usually: heavy navigation app running, gps in use, battery charging, 3g in use, sun shining directly at phone behind front car window. All this together can lead to battery temperature rising above 50C at which point the charging is automatically stopped to prevent battery damage and you can end up with phone battery empty after some time despite phone being connected to charger. So the CPU freq limit for car dock is there to help with this temperature issue.)

Yes I use it, except in this case it wasn't in the dock, it was on my lap as I was the passenger.
Although I'm curious. I've disabled the dock observer (car mode just annoys me at the moment). I'm assuming a disabled dock observer means it doesnt reduce frequency when docked, right?
What ROM would be ideal to use with it ?
So yes this Phone's battery unfortuanatly is not well at all.. but here is how i managed mine to last a day without charging. Let me also say im a heavy user also. I text A LOT and always pull out my phone in class play a few games to pass the time or just browse my phone. So this does work for heavy / light users.
Go to Wifi/ menu / advanced and click never on Keep wifi on during sleep.
Go to settings/ Location access - Switch to off
For your brightness it will be on Auto switch that off and put it almost to the lowest as you dont really need it high just kills the battery.
- Go to the App store and download Easy Battery savor. When you access the app choose intiligent mode. It really helps !
-Dont ever use live wallpaper it just drains it so fast.
- DOwnload Faux App It really helps (Faux kernel Enhancement Project) Once downloaded go to CPU and set max clock to 1.35 instead of 1.5. it will still be buttery smooth and it will drain the battery less.
Also I am using the Franco Kernel - nightly #53 which in my opinion really helps !
- Try to turn off the WiFi usage as much as possible and you will see a huge difference.
That's all from me guys. By doing all this my battery significantly improved and lasts about a day now.
Anyways if you have better solutionson how you manage your battery and how you extend its life.
- post pictures
- post the apps you use
- post everything !

I use harsh. Whenever I don't game, I lower the max freq to just 810mhz, ondemand, row, mpdecision on (as harsh recommended) and it's still buttery smooth, and of course battery life is incredible, and I also do check the Disable HW Overlays and Force GPU in 2d rendering. And since no kernel controlling apps are needed, my phone feels cleaner too I can't upload battery stats yet as I'm in an area with only edge connectiom and I hate using slow internet connections

A couple of things I noticed with this. The first thing I notice is, in two of your screenshots, you appear to have mobile data disabled completely. The second thing I noticed is that your final screenshot shows 24hr 52 min on battery, yet according to your clock, a it should really be a total of 33hr 6 min since unplugged. Your first screenshot shows 88% battery remaining with it already having been unplugged for 7hr 35 min. With that screenshot showing a time of 3:11pm, that would mean your phone was unplugged at 7:36am. If the phone was unplugged at 7:36am, then how is it only showing a total of 24hr 52min at 4:42pm the next day? It should be showing 33hr 6min. That's an odd inconsistency there. All in all, even with the data that is showed in your screenshot, it shows very little use as phone idle and cell standby are both in your top 5. Your screen was your highest drain, yet there isn't anything else there accompanying it. I could be wrong, but it seems to me that all you did was keep the data turned off on your phone, and connect to wifi where available. You turned your screen on, but didn't really do anything with the phone besides having the screen just on. That said, even stock with no changes, a person can get 24 hours on a charge if they're disabling their phone and not using it.
Interesting tips however I have a few points:
Your first tip suggests having WiFi to Never stay connected during sleep. I am part of another Android forum which deals with tablets. We tested this feature as with a tablet, you are likely to leave it for hours on end before using it again. It was excellent if the tablet was not touched, however we noticed that it significantly increased the battery drain if you were regularly switching between sleep and using it.
Agree with the second but don't throw away practicality, use Location settings when they need to be use, not just turn them off and don't use them.
Leave it on auto-brightness dude, why ruin the nice visuals of a fantastic screen by having it so dark you can't see it? I only ever use lowest brightness when its dark or the battery is nearly dead.
No idea about the battery saver.
I definitely disagree with this. If you use 3G permanently, like I do, then turning on WiFi definitely reduces battery drain. I don't turn off data ever, so switching WiFi where possible is quite a useful battery saving technique.

His solution is to turn off connectivity and functionality on the phone. That defeats the purpose of even having the phone at all.
That said, I think a safe UC of maybe 200MHz can have a difference, but to me, it's all about enjoying the phone and the phone experience. No need to screw with it
Don't do the wifi feature. It will use more battery because it will constantly have to reconnect to the wifi connection every time your phone comes out of sleep mode and that will consume more battery.

Just curious, why did you buy it then? Personally, I'm leaving everything on because I bought the phone for the looks and usability.
And yes, the phone lasts me all day while using it for everything including emails, conference calls, web browsing etc.
I've set up profiles using the Smart Profiles app to quickly turn things on and off at will - hit CAR and bluetooth/GPS turn on, Wifi turns off. Hit HOME and the reverse happens, etc.

Same thing here..but I use scripts When I'm in school and all I need my phone for is some tethering and music, I activate my script that sets the max freq to just 810mhz and I undervolt an extra -50mv from the stock undervoltages of harsh, but when I'm out and away, I enjoy the full 1.5ghz quadcore beast trapped inside my pocket

Don't get me wrong, it's useful to have a decent battery life, but I really don't see the need to turn the device into an expensive brick. My suggestions, which may or may not be better than the ones in the OP, but they seem to work for me on every Android I've come across without screwing with undervolting etc:
1. Turn Auto-Sync off, or increase the duration between each sync. On my old phone, the phone would use Auto-Sync every hour or so which totally killed the battery over the course of day. I turned it off and would sync it manually (taking all of 15 seconds) on a Friday. Made a huge difference, although simply increasing the time between syncs is just as effective if not more so as you still save a bit of time (might opt for that myself :good
2. Use Inverted Apps on SAMOLED, Don't use Inverted Apps on IPS, white colour uses more battery on SAMOLED, but a lot less on IPS :fingers-crossed:
3. Get yourself a Toggle-based Notification bar, you will remember to switch off your WiFi when walking around in public. To that end, switch your WiFi off unless you are connected to a hotspot, the constant scanning will drain your battery and depending on the interval may take quite a large hit over the course of a day. If you rely on WiFi then maybe increase the scan interval time.
4. Turn off all mobile networking services when in a known signal blackspot. e.g. When work pays for us to go to a hotel on the Welsh border in Cheshire, there is absolutely no signal guaranteed unless you go to the end of the driveway, so I turn off all phone services unless I am there. Your phone will drink your battery very quickly otherwise, guaranteed. The easy solution is to use WhatsApp, switch your phone onto Airplane mode then turn on WiFi and connect to a hotspot (if they have one available, hotels usually do). This is surprisingly low on battery consumption.
So basically, just leave my phone in my pocket and not use it. Okay. Gotcha.

My battery life is amazing. I guess it just depends on what you compare it to. I had an evo 3d before, and my 3d would be dead by noon without even turning on the screen. My work blackberry lasts 5 days with fairly heavy email usage.
My N4 though, I use it fairly often for browsing, occasional calls throughout the day, streaming audio, this and that. After 12 hours of use I am still at 60% usually. From 7am to 5:30 (typically when i get out of work) I will be at 70%+
Not sure why people are so bent out of shape about it...
On my 3d if I ran facebook app or any stupid **** like that it would kill my battery like i didnt even have one.
Here's another idea get a job or pay attention in school. That will save battery life as well. I have literally seen people stare at a screen without doing anything with the phone, just because they are so obsessed with it being in their hand
