Help with system update. - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Okay so I just bought this N1 off of someone off on Craigslis. It is rooted with a custom Rom. Now my problem is that I just got OTA notification to update to 2.2, but the phone already has 2.2 . I am afraid to do the update because I don't know what will happen if I do. And yes I am pretty much a noob on the whole rooting process and installing roms, so any help will be appreciated.

Rom versions and their numbers

Hi everyone,
Thanks to you I managed to get my HTC rooted and now can flash roms too.
I was 1.32 and then downgraded to official 1.31 and then flashed 1.31 and then 2.1 update1 ...
I just want to know what the rules are for android firmwares. Can I flash a custom rom of 1.31 again over 2.1 ?
What do these numbers mean ?
In symbian firmware they warned you not to flash from v 50 to 40 or else it would brick the phone even though it might be from one hacked custom fw to another.
How is it with android ?
Thanks
As long as the phone is rooted - just go back to your recovery screen and wipe/flash new rom. version numbers have no meaning in that way. 1.31.xxx.x is only the htc software version, in modded roms it's just what build the custom rom is based on. But you can flash any legend rom, as long as you keep the phone rooted - no problem.
thanks efex , thanks a million......hope you can hear my sigh of relief

Noob question about rooting

First up let me say I recently moved from the Motorola Dext MB200 to the Samsung Galaxy S phone.
As I am pretty familiar with rooting and adding roms to the dext/cliq
I am not sure about the Galaxy... is it the same way?
What do I need as I hear people say the Superoneclick method is better
What info do I need before rooting or installing the rom to make sure I have the proper rom.
Basically wanting a stable rom but faster than stock.
ie. wifi - bluetooth
Thanks

Use the search button for custom roms.
Look under the development section for all the available ROM if you are currently on 2.2 froyo you may want to stick there if you are looking for something stable as 2.3 roms are still in a lot of the development stages.
Just use superoneclick to root. lots of videos on youtube if you need help.
I rooted mine about 2-3 weeks ago. I stick with stock but changed the kernel in order to be able to apply a lagfix. I change the filesystem from RFS to EXT4. The difference between the two is distinguishable as night and day in term of speed.

if he is in 2.2 he should upgrade at least to 2.2.1. it's far better.
What I have :
2.2
baseband - i9000NEJP2
KERNEL - 2.6.32.9 [email protected]#1
BUILD - FROYO.NEJP5
If any of this helps
If I upgrade what do I do and do I need to unlock the phone again?
are you looking to unlock or root?
since you are on 2.2 just root using superoneclick program
if you are looking to unlock, go to the market and down un-locker pro

Most of these Roms are pretty stable for daily use, but if you are looking for a perfect Rom, don't bother! Beg SE as much as you want, you won't get from them! change phone!

[Q] How do I update my N7000 to jellybean?

I want to update my galaxy note N7000 to Jellybean. I bought on craigslist and the guy said he had installed a custom kernel:
Kernel: 3.0.15 speedmod k3-15
Android version 4.0.4
I want to update to JB. If I download and install the software update, it says failed to update.
How do I properly update to JB without bricking my phone? Do I use Kies? Must I update the Kernel first to a custom JB Kernel?
Or Should I restore to the stock kernel and then try to update the OS?
How do I do any of the above?
I might sound incredibly stupid and noobish but I'd rather try to figure out how to improve my battery life and stop the app crashing...than cower like a ***** out of fear of techjunkies calling me names. Also mad respect to the techjunkies who are willing to help noobs. I searched and read and still am not sure what to do. I'm afraid I'll brick my phone if I don't do it right. The info is overwhelming and I could use some help. Thanks.

Follow the instructions here and download the stock rom of your choice and flash using pc oding:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1424997
once done, you can flash custom kernel (Speedmod):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2181599
or Philz:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1901191
instructions on how to mentioned in the OP.
Yes as mentioned, download the stock ROM for the phone and flash it using PC ODIN. To improve the battery life, you can try to disable the apps and processes that keep running in the background even when you're not really using them, but look do not disable the very processes which run your phone! There isn't much to improve the battery performance if the battery is old. And DO NOT overcharge the battery by keeping it to charge overnight and try to avoid using the phone while charging.
