Well... I migrated to a Nexus One from an iPhone 3GS and have used a significantly larger amount of data. Anyone else seen anything similar? Does the iPhone go through proxies that compress data that much before sending it to the phone? ...or am I just using the NexusOne A LOT more?

I got my N1 on May 30 or 31...
The N1 multi-tasks (running processes may be transmitting/downloading data), pushes e-mail, and has widgets (periodically update).
Oh yeah... good point! Another thing I thought about, the N1 has a file manager and I have been pretty much downloading anything I want off the internet, where I couldn't do that with the iPhone.
I find that the N1 is much more capable of true PC tasks than the iPhone. I think Google should create an iPad-like device based off the Nexus One, I could actually see one of those replacing a laptop, where as I could never replace my laptop with an iPad...
data
my usage is about the same, averaging around 4-7gbs a month. Dont have internet service at home, and do use it as a hotspot. Works pretty well for the most part, 3g service is pretty solid and decent speeds for emails and reading the paper. Plus download new roms, probably my biggest data hog
Yeah... I very rarely use mine as a hotspot...
My usage was about that high my first month tethered for maybe ten minutes or so doing work email. Recent months have been significantly lower, closer to yourold average. You're right about being able to do more though and I think that's a big factor.
I went from under 1 gb a month to nearly 3 gb the first month I had my Nexus One. I think a lot of it was google listen..

Not at all. It's a direct line, well as direct as it gets when your IP address changes every time you open the browser.
This thread definitely makes me feel better. I'll be switching to an iPhone 4 in the next few weeks (flame all you want) and my data usage with my N1 (with mild tethering at times) has peaked at about 1.5 GB, so if it'll be less with an iPhone then there's no way I can see myself running over the 2 GB plan.
On topic, I honestly am very surprised I use as much data as I do with my Nexus One, as I mostly browse the web or use Wapedia, sometimes I'll browse Facebook, and I use it to play MP3s in my car which scrobble to Last.fm. Once in a blue moon I'll tether with it so I can download drivers and such for a customer (I run a computer repair business) but always well under 200 MB. How that all added up to 1.5 GB is certainly beyond me...
bit off topic but how do you find out your monthly data usage on Tmoblie, its not on my bill and I cant find it anywhere?
Wow, I'm glad I keep WIFI on all the time. That could be me.
my data usage definitely increased with the nexus. and not just from more usage, but andoid OS uses more data in general. lots of behind the scenes data packets being sent, google servers, gmail, live widgets, etc. android uses a good amount of data.

I dont know what limits you have on your "unlimited" data packages but what I have is packages per 100KB in/out (every provider has it different)
So I pay for every started 100KB package - 1 for received, 1 for send. So i.e when I check weather I send 1KB and receive 5KB but I pay for 200KB.
And it was not a problem when I was using iPhone as it was maintaining session ALL day long and at midnight it was resetted and new session was opened. In other words if one day I did 1000 internet connections 10KB each I would use 10MB - it was iPhone.
Nexus one is not maintaining one session as he is opening new session for every internet connection so now the same 1000 connections 10KB each would be counted as 1000 connections per 100KB (becasue smallest package is 100KB) so I would pay for 100MB (10 times more!!).
You can check it on your billing - when I had iPhone there was one session line per day, when I switched to Nexus1 I have A LOT of sessions line every day...
Not sure if this is you case but could be useful.
Well, since iPhones now can no longer get signal if you, you know, HOLD them (and to think, we complained about the Nexus and its 3G!), iPhone data usage should be much lower.
Here is a link from Gizmodo France that really shows what is what...

The data on my bill shows up as a lump sum each day (ocassionaly twice a day)... It looks like my N1 is running all day sessions as well.

Hi guys/gals I had a question about the PDA plan vs the MEdia Unlimited package which AT&T offers.. I called ATT and inquired about getting the Media Net unlimited package for the tilt instead of the PDA plan which was $30 bucks compared to $15... however the rep said that the Media net bundle won't work for the Tilt and you HAVE to get the PDA plan.. I was like well i have a 5.0 mb plan and it still works with the tilt.. and he said that well eventually you won't be able the use the internet once our system recognizes that you have a PDA phone... my friend though has a tilt and he went into a ATT store and the guy said he can get the Media unlimited bundle and should be fine.. hes been on that plan for only 3 weeks and hasn't got his bill yet but I was reading online that people with the Media bundle with a PDA phone were actually getting charged for internet minutes with a bill over a grand?!!? Can someone please help clarify the plans? Do I need that PDA plan with ATT or will I been fine with the media net package? Any ways around it like unlocking the Tilt? Thanks!
you have 2 options..
1. do what your friend did..if it works.. it works and you should never get charged unless you go over the 5 gig limit of bandwidth (tethering)
2. get another phones imei and call att and change your phone to that imei and then call back or go online and switch it the medianet. And the bandwidth limit goes for this too.
The ONLY thing that pda connect plan gives you is VPN which utlizes the isp.cingular ipn...
Hmm this is very interesting, i to want to get a data plan..but at $30/month that is alot of money for a college student paying his own way. $15/month is very tempting....
I had a cingular 2125 (HTC Tornado) with unlimited media net before upgrading to the Tilt, and I did NOT need to upgrade my data plan.
i actualy work for att credits and activations...
they will not allow you.. system wont allow you... to add media net unl to any tilt/kaiser..
that feat. is for phones without heavy internet capabilities such as the razr or chocolate or something.. doesnt even show up in the avail feat...
if you think that you are still on media net, but have upgraded.. i would watch out there could possibly be unexpected charges coming your way
... i do believe that they have a cheaper plan then the 30 dollar one which is like 10mb or some crap .. but to be honest ive never heard of anyone ever getting that
I have unlimited media net on my Tilt. Have had it for a while. As long as you use wap.cingular instead of isp.cingular, you aren't charged but for the monthly of media.net.
It works great. In this area 50$ per month is the pda plan and not worth it as there is no 3G... grrr. so 20$ for unlimited and 200 txt (Media max 200 bundle) works great for me.
the only pda personal that is 50 dollars includes unlimited txt..
as far as i know media net is not avail on tilt.. i could be wrong.
i know 100% that if you call my center asking for media net on a tilt you will be denied..
the only thing i can think of is that maybe the media net can be added in an area not running on 3g.. doubtful but possible i suppose..
just because your phone is saying connecting to media net does not mean that is the function pushing your internet.. positive of this

ive been using it on my Tilt for about a year. I just never called AT&T for service and/or took it into a store for any service issues, so I dont beleive they ever caught on.
What pisses me off is that the same internet plan for smartphones without touch screens is half the price. That's the main differance, the touch screen. If I had a smartphone running windows that doesnt have a touch screen, I would still use the net just as much, and I would tether it to my PC just as often, so that shouldnt really be a determining factor in the pricing IMO.

Yep, you are 100% wrong, Both care and telegence let you ad whatever feature you want to a pda, even if the imei is for a pda. Now wanna ask me who I work for. Furtermore if a rep from the callcenter add's pda unlim and takes media net off, WITHOUT telling th customer, that my friend is really bad for employee and 100% good for the customer. You will get credited out the ass.
And if any of my friends EVER has this happen to them, PM me, and ill bet the call center associate does not have a job within 2 days after me finding out about it.
Also AT&T does not look at data usage on media net side, so if you are using a kaiser/tilt with media net have fun.
P.S. Media net on a tilt works fine in a 3g area

BTW, MediaNet works fine on the Tilt...3G too...

isp.cingular question
I have 1 question i have the $30 PDA personal plan. I flashed my phone to hyperdragon III. I internet works fine. But I noticed that When I have to do anything that involves GPS it tries to connect to isp.cingular. It alswayz says can't connect. does n e 1 know y? what is isp.cingular for? do I even need that? or can I just delete the settings?

ISP is faster connection, you can only use this if you have the 30$ pda feature. Not much faster than media net.
Only do this if you want to only use isp.
the third "also try" is were you would select your default data connection, you could just eneble media net and that should eliminate your situation.
Go to start>settings>Connections>Manage existing connections>Proxy settings>click the first box uncheck the second.
Also try
start>settings>advanced network>Gprs>select pap authentication.
also try
start>settings>connections>advanced>select networks>change it from media net to my isp.
Also your profile says you are with t-mobile, if this is true you are on the wrong settings all together.

you obviously don't work for att as a representative, but as a dealer.. that would explain why you are so arrogantly wrong.. i wish you would call me asking for media net on tilt..not only would i laugh at you for your persistence but then i would laugh at you after you tried to escalate the call and failed.. and just the mere fact that you are saying that att would credit you for anything like that just makes me realize how very little you know.. i mean that is hilarious but still ridiculous .. att isn't going to credit anything.. unless you got pda personal on a plan that doesn't take THAT particular option.. ergo.. if you got pda pers. on a tilt, and your like well i want to be reimbursed for the extra 15 a month...yea right.. but again.. that's not even a possibility as phones that don't take pda WILL NOT list it in Care or Telegence.. and for KD8 that works in reverse for phones with media net also.. unless specified i promise an att reps will add pda personal unless other wise instructed by the dealer.. and even then .. try asking for media net on that phone..
hahah and dont even get me started on att giving out credits.. lmfao.. you are out of your mind
the fact that you think you can take someones job by not getting the right data plan shows how little you know... like your the ceo of att or something.. i am almost positive you are a dealer.. ask me how i think i know that???
but getting past all of that.. i will post the data features avail for tilt to customers per CSP, unless KD8 thinks that he can get to that first??

its not like i am scared to tell people that they cannot have the media net option on their account with a tilt.. i will tell them that all day long laughing
i honestly dont care if you believe me or not.. i mean if you can get your net working for 15 dollars then kudos to you.. i can get free wifi all day long and not pay a penny ..thats where you should be focusing your attention
but beyond that i just wish you would call me for an update i would remove that feature in a new york minute..
additionally.. i will post some csp articles for your viewing pleasure with all available rate plans for the tilt..
Ps, I dont talk on the phone all day. I drive around from state to state in a bug SUV that says AT&T, i got a bunch of big ol antennas on it. So when I tell someone how media net .vs isp works i know for a fact, you CAN hide it from att. And I have also explained in great depth on this board how to do so.

Hello,
I looked around for an answer to this question but most of the threads are a couple years old. I have a Tilt on ATT and I'm looking to get data for my laptop for occasional use, but I don't want to pay the $60 to get either a laptop card or tethering and then be capped at 5 GB of data.
If I get the $30 unlimited data plan, can I use Internet Connection Sharing or whatever its called on the phone to tether to my laptop? Do people get monitored doing this, and if so, what is the penalty?
I don't plan on using it excessively so I shouldn't go past the 5 GB anyway.
Thanks in advance.
So, the consent here seems to be that they don't notice unless you go over a certain amount. Obviously, there is a risk as you are going to be breaking the contract, but I have never had any trouble. The stock rom deletes the link to ICS, so you would have to use file explorer to dig it up.
I've used over a 100 MB of data this way and nothing happened lol
Thanks this post reminded me to pay my monthly statement

I've used it heavily actually, though I try not to go too overboard. I've used it on my car computer(streetdeck2) to download map data on trips and tethered my personal computer while on the road. I've never had any problems, yet.....
ive had the media max200 unlimited package the lowest cost unlimited data plan that ive had for years since it was cingular and at one point it was my sole internet connection and i would use it every day all day and neither cingular nor att has ever made an issue about my data usage. if i were you i would just go online and add the lowest price unlimited data plan rather than having someone from att add it, otherwise theyll charge you more for the same **** depending on your phone. data is data and they dont know what phone youre using.
Tilt Tethering
My understanding is that AT&T has disabled the "Internet Sharing" application when it tries to connect your computer to the internet if you do not have the appropriate data plan (that includes tethering). It used to work, but with 6.1 it no longer successfully connects your computer to the internet while tethered.

Agreed.
I believe there was initial concern with 6.1 that the new OS could actually report this information back to the service provider, but nothing ever came of it.
Go with the cheep one, unless your going to be downloading movies all the time or tryin to watch 480p hulu then you should be fine.
i have used my phone to watch hulu on skyfire for about 2 hrs almost every day along with checking my email every 15 min and general surfing and google maps and only hit 2gigs of data.
I have one of my best friends who, works for ATT, told me they only monitor data usage, not the source.

Ok. So ive read, been told, that Tmobiles G1 Data Plan sets a cap of 1GB a month UP/DOWN.....
I usually use 50-60% of 1GB, but this month it looks like id be pretty close to 1GB if I continue streaming music from Pandora...
Has ANYONE had their data turned off, been warned, or has anyone actually gone over 1GB in a month?
I thought it was 5GB? They will most likely just let you know the first time it happens, if it happens again they MIGHT shut your data off. If they did I would get in there ass about it and show them it is from Pandora which is on the Market, so they should be ready for bigger bandwith transfers from A LOT of G1 users since it has been on that top apps slider in the Market.
Yea, I figured it was to prevent "Tethering" but , like today, a day i was in the car all day driving, i used 90MB of data (mostly on 3G)
t-mobile employee here, there is no cap on the data plans.
Like candy said there's no cap per say, but there is of course a "limit" of data you can use its 10gb I saw the article on gizmodo. Just search for it
Hi folks, I am looking at a driod to replace my WM6.5 unit and up till now I have managed to avoid using anything that needed data, reason... I live in Australia and the telcos know how to charge for data like it was gold.
But as a LOT of the new apps and services require data then I have to look at the plans and make a stab based on expected monthly data usage...
I know, I know, how long is the piece of string......
What I am asking is can people give me a rough estimate of monthly data usage on any network with any apps enabled, I reckon with good and bad I can figure out what may be feasible for my selection.
email usage is light, web next to nothing (for now) and not sure about other services, I have wifi at home so would attempt updates and stuff there rather than OTA
Any help would be much appreciated.
Cheers
Hey
Well, not sure of my exact data usage, but it would be sure to increase 10 fold (it did for me at least coming from a blackberry). There is so much stuff that can be gained through apps that use data. Maybe you could tell us the various price ranges for the data plans and decide that way?
Aldo there are tons of apps that will monitor your data and give you alerts and such so the fear or unintentionnaly going over is slim.
Hope this helps.

Thats the problem from my end, none of the telcos are helpful as such, they range from 200mb to 1gb but are ALL different in price, so one charges x for 200mb on y cap and another is double for the same 200mb but a different cap
So what I needed was someone to say what they do on an average month, 2mb, 20mb, 784mb, 3.2gb etc etc, this way i can figure out the cort/benefit ratio of cap/plan v's qouta and extras
It seems to me that many apps I use give my flexibility in this area. The main apps I use that download data are configurable of how often to check for updates. For example, I can set my weather widget to download new info anywhere from every 15 min to every couple hours. Also, syncing with gmail and other google services can be turned on and off so you could only have it on when on wifi. Twitter and Facebook apps also have settings to change how often you have them refresh the data. So if you don't use too many apps or just set all of them to only update manually you can limit your data usage by a lot.
OK, can I just ask people to actualy state
HOW MUCH DATA YOU USE PER MONTH
Thank you.
my first month, i have no idea how but i used 3.3gb.
every month after that has been around just under 1gb, except last month when i had to tether my laptop because my home internet was out for a week, the data for that month showed 1.2gb.
I have two widgets, facebook and twitter that sync about every 2-4 hours, i adjust them some times to sync less and i manually sync them if i want to read and am bored. I have newsrob which syncs my google reader articles, sometimes i have that sync every 4 hours sometimes fully manual. I have background data turned on almost all the time and gps turned on always updating my location with latitude, i have gmail and an exchange account syncing for work using ssl. i have last.fm scrobbling all the music i listen to and stream music with it occasionally, not all the time. i browse the web on it quite abit whiel sitting at home and watching movies with the girlfriend as well as look up random facts and other things i come across day to day.
let me know if you need any other input!
I use on average somewhere between 900mb and 1.2gb
Thats streaming Pandora most of the time I'm in my car, using GPS maybe 2-3 times a week and pretty heavy data usage in other ways (i.e web surfing and apps)
I don't do much tethering or downloading of large files. I have tethered a few times but nothing that I would call average.
I used to use about ~2 GB when just using it for Pandora, hulu, and browsing. Now I'm at around 7 GB since I tether.
For comparison, I used 65mb on my bb bold 9000 and now 1gb on my n1. Mostly because its so fast! I do not really stream. I only browse, email, chat and some videos. Its a lot of usage from just browsing
before froyo i ran about 1-1.5 gb a month, now ive tethered a lot and started listening to more music so im up to about 4 gb

pandora - no usage this cycle, i usally stream at work, and i'm on vacation this week
normally, if i use pandora, it's for 4-6 hours per day, at roughly 1Mb / 15 mintues
there, hopefully you'll have an idea what a typical nexus user will burn through in a billing period.
I have a 500mb plan, and to date (over a year) I've only come close to that once.
I have Twitter refreshing every 10 minutes, GMail push, Email every 15, and Facebook every 30. Plus some web browsing (of relatively light sites). No video or audio streaming.
On average I'm around 250mb a month now, because we have no wifi at work. When I was in school (wifi on campus, and at home), I never went over 100mb. Usually less than 50.
~600MB monthly.
It consists of me tethering the laptop on the way to work and back ~2 hours a day, mostly. When I didn't use it and just surfed for fun, I'd get ~150MB monthly. When I didn't surf at all, the data apps put me at ~40MB monthly. I'm using Gmail, Gtalk and several smaller-scale apps like Astrid.
THANK YOU THANK YOU to those that actualy posted figures, the plans over here are rather stringent and no way could you support some of the figures you have indicated without incurring signifiacnt costs, I now have an idea that data costs are a priority something I have to factor in to the overall package, and unless the telco has an unlimited plan I have to read the fine print for excess charges VERY clearly.
Thank you once again
I hovered around 7-11gb a month when I was on att wireless. Their footprints issue great in Miami. I swapped to T-Mobile and they suck. Its horrible. I hardly ever touch my phone now. And it shows! I now hover around 300mb-800mb
Hi, I noticed during phone call, the phone will not try to re-connect when there is lost of data connection. I am doing conferencing using Webex, the phone line is ok but data connection will be lost after a few minutes of online. I am with stock ROM, 4.04

Definitely not normal if you are connecting via 3G, as there should be no issue with simultaneous voice and data.
If you are connecting via 2G/EDGE, you won't have voice and data simultaneously.

I noticed the same thing on mine after switching to ICS. I don't ever remember having that issue with GB.

Are you with stock ROM or rooted with any custom kennel?
I am thinking to root but not sure which kennel is more reliable.

Just try it in ics. Do a download and make a phone call and observed, because mine is 3g. To be fair when i observed it i was in custom rom, i never did make an observation in stock rom.

When you said observe it, mean the data connection is lost?

I disagree you on that. I have been using data and call all at the same time. In fact I'm using it just a while ago. I'm browsing the Net, got a call from one of my buddies and I was able to talk to him using my headset while I'm browsing the web on my phone at the same time.
Voice and data are synchronous already.... We are talking about today's age already okay?
Most smartphones nowadays have chips already to support synchronous and parallel communications... as opposed to the analog days when you really have to choose one over the other (data /call or vice versa)

I guess maybe i was wrong but i one thing i notice while im dowloading something the dowload will be cut off when i perform a call.
I tried it again this time with another custom rom where i am right now the download is cut off when i make a phone call.
Maybe using headset it will behave differently, i dont know.
You should try also to download something and make a phone call if it will not be cut off then its my bad. Do not use your headset and also use 3g.

Downloading a file is different from browsing on the internet. Downloading from a server requires a steady influx and outflux of packets sent to your phone. Your phone is trying to request to the server to download a file.. the server in turn grants this request and that is when a 'handshake' takes place. Now because your also using the phone to talk, that handshake is interrupted or stalled, and that's when you say your download is cut off. In reality, it's not.. it is still sending bits of packets down to your phone, but in bits and fragments only.. not the whole big bulk. Your phone is trying to leverage between data and voice calls.. that is what it is doing in the background.
It depends also on your carrier. 3G (Edge) in a very pitiful stage if your going to use your phone on this scenario. (That is why I gave up with T-Mobile long time ago).
P.S., I can't imagine taking calls and browsing the Net (using the speaker) could you?? Surely you can't be that stupid to put your phone 2 inches closer to your face, while browsing and speaking to the phone. It's as dumb and ridiculous as I can ever imagine!

Well i based my answer to this thread on my experienced about the data, because of that download being cut off.
About that stupid thing there no need to say that, do you think i do not know that, its obvious, i only said that dont use the headset because that is the setup i use to when the download is cut off.
About that bits and fragments, when i said the download is cut off its really means failed because there really no bits and fragments coming in.

I'm not stating or implying that your stupid or something... your suggestions about not using the headset and merely using the phone to take the call and browsing the web is simply out of my league. How can you simply browse and take call at the same time? I can't. You either have to put your mouth closer to the phone which I would imagine being 1 or to inch closer to the phone and then you would expect me to browse the web by then?? geez!
Like I've said, download and browsing the web are not the same thing at all. Downloading uses your data packets CONTINUOUSLY and inasmuch, it would require no to have it interrupted or stalled (at the same time your taking that call.)
Also, one of the factors why your download is cutoff is the fact your only using 3G (EDGE). It is as slow as hell. I would understand perhaps if it's more than EDGE (like HSPA/HSDPA) and your haviing download issue. That I truly understand. BUT using EDGE to download? Of course.. 100% your download would stuck out. EDGE on a real world scenario is never meant to be synchronous in all channels at all. You either have to take it one or the other. That's normally how you do it on 3G.
Its a misunderstanding then. No harms done.

thanks bud.. my apology as well.
Hi guys, my problem is during the call, once lost data connection the OS will not reconnect to data line again until the call is off.
Today I tried an experiment, under"Network Mode", I choose WCDMA only, the connection is alright throughout my conference call, no lost data during the call. So I suspected it's due to the way the OS handle connection, and depend on signal strength in your area.

EDGE is not 3G!
It is extension of the 2G GPRS standard, and is commonly referred to as 2.5G, though this has no basis in "standards".
3G UMTS (note, not CDMA 3G) will allow simultaneous data and voice whereas any 2G data connection will suspend if you make or receive a call.
HSPA/HSPA+ are to 3G what EDGE is to 2G.

Dave
