Hello Xda Developers!
I was told to come here to post my question. I'm a Nexus One user, who is about to load Sense UI on his standard factory shipped N1. I'm going to use a guide from Anroid Central, which I'm happy with.
My question, is when it comes to chosing a ROM to load on my device. How do I know which one is the latest/greatest/safest? There are many links to Sense UI Roms on the net, and most date back to Feb 2010. Surely in 4 months a more recent version has been released than early Alpha versions.
Is there a version control site, with links/reviews anywhere, or is it just a case of download it and if it doesn't brick your handset then you found a working one.
Thanks for the advice in advance.
Jim.
Don't know if this is the best or not
but it worth a try

Its A port of sense ROM from Desire Phone
Which is very similar to the N1
And its build by Modaco Which is a very great person I think
I believe Modaco's is the latest. He planned on releasing a Beta but I don't think he ever did due to FroYo.
Cool, thanks for the feedback guys.

Have you tried it?
OK I've just loaded it, and it just loops on the HTC Quietly Brilliant boot up screen, any suggestions?
Wipe the phone and reflash. Make sure you have a 2.1 radio.
Thanks for the reply, can you please explain in more detail, I am a n00b to flashing phones. Thanks in advance.
Hi sorry, let me provide more information to where I'm at. I unlocked and rooted my phone. Did the backup, when I went to load the Sense UI rom, I got to the white loading screen and it looped there.
Since this I have found a FroYo Rom and have successfully loaded it. So I'm back to where I started, but at least my phone isn't a brick. I'm after a good working Rom or advice on how to get that other one to load. Many thanks in advance peeps.
Kingklick's Nexus2Desire 1.1 is the newest and fastest the I know.
Again, from recovery, wipe the phone, then install the rom.

It should be as simple as wiping everything and flashing the ROM, it really isn't that complicated.
Cool! Got it working guys. Had loads of issues using Modacos Roms, seems to be just me, but then loaded on
Release Name: KiNgxKxNexus Desire2Nexus
Release Version: 1.1
And worked like a dream, no issues at all, good speed. Yeah sorry, the instructions were clear, I was just freaking out a bit coz I thought I'd bricked my phone.
Sense is a far superior OS, except one thing which really bugs me, if you use the unlock pattern, you are forced to swipe first to unlock, which you don't on standard android, if this is the 2nd release, surely they would have fixed this by now? Any one know of any hacks to bypass this?
Thanks for all your help.

We get at least a dozen new users asking this question every couple of weeks. The response is always the same. This is like asking a community of peers which pants are the most comfortable. It's a matter of opinion. Flashing doesn't harm your device at all (if you follow instructions), and it's simple to restore it to factory settings if you need to send it in for repairs or replacement. Therefore, with no downside to flashing ROMs, just keep flashing them until you find something you like.
Most ROM threads will tell you within the first couple of posts most of the goals of the ROM, and whether they are cooked for speed, looks, or stability. There are also pictures on most all of them so you can see it before you flash. Flashing takes minutes, so why not just spend a day or so testing a bunch of them out. I've been flashing for a long time and I still don't stick to just one ROM.

I got the same problem with this ROM from AT&T. I called HTC and they admit that there is a memory leak problem in the HTC Sense built into that version of the ROM. So does anyone have a ROM with a better (or later) HTC Sense that works, i.e. fast, no memory leak, and no lockup?
Thanks.
The best advice that can be given to those in your situation (besides HardSPL'ing your device) it to
1) Pick a ROM on this very board.
2) Flash it to your phone.
3) Use your phone.
4)
a) If you like it, then your problem is solved.
b) If you don't like it, do steps 1-3 until you get to step 4a)
Software Version 1.59.502.3
Will this new software version be a huge upgrade from my current version without losing any default features that I now have?
Consider using Wildchild's ROMs. They are pretty much stock look/feel, but faster and much more stable.

Yep. Bluetooth works great. Actually everything works great. Its a ROM where everything works as it should. Keep in mind, bloatware is removed, but all the core stuff works perfect.
Thanks - where is the best place to read up on with instructions on how to do this?
Try the flashing your first Rhodium ROM tutorial sticky.
Thanks - it appears there are several versions of the rom, so I have a lot of reading to figure out what the differences are.
Do you have any preference?

I use the 2.1 ROM from Wild Child and it is absolutely the best. Has everything I need and nothing I don't. It is fast, stable, in my mind, the way it should have been from the beginning. It is a rock solid ROM.
This is the one I was going to flash on my phone, but after hours of working on it with F2505x4 we could not get it to flash. There was an issue with the HardSPL. I ended up flashing the updated AT&T stock rom instead for now.
Hi all Thanks to all.... Newbie here with flashing and all so i just want to get started on the right track... being doing alot of reading just wanted to know what is the safest rom right now for the captivate....
also ive downloaded bay_wolfs AIO captivate tool ...if i use this tool i dont have to go through the the whole process of installing rom manager..zip files etc..do i if i read correctly..well thanks all in advance for the responses.....
It depends on What you want. For a really bare bones rom, use precision. For a close to stock rom, use cognition. For a well themed and polished rom, use serendipity or ultimate. Cognition is the only captivate based one though.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using Tapatalk
yeesh - sorry but most of these get locked in 10 posts or less as these become "My ROM is better than Your ROM" epeen arguments.
With that being said.. if a ROM is posted in the Dev forum and as long as it doesn't say Cyanogen Beta or Gingerbread alpha AOSP in it? It is pretty much safe to flash.
Most of these ROM's use either a Rogers, Captivate, or i9000 Source and don't deviate other than tweaks to apps/kernels/modems/lagfixes/themes.
If you want to be safe - I would go with Cognition as a first ROM flash then go from there. It is basically "stock".
Thanks guys for the quick posts....Just a little worried about doing it for the first time i have read, watched videos, this is why im asking before taking the plunge...
i really like Bay_wolfs tool seems great for newbies has anyone used it...i think i may go with cognition is there a better version than the 3.4 what i mean is the newest version seem best or and older one...
I also flashed my first ROM the other week after lots of reading and studying. I went with Andromeda 1.0 at and have since gone to 1.1. I didn't use the tool that you're wondering about, but have downloaded it for future use. So if you do use it, let me know how it goes for you. I went with the installation instrustions on Andromeda's website, and that worked flawlessly. Once you do decide on a ROM, I'm sure that you'll be extremely happy as the performance is way better than stock. Happy flashing and good luck!
Like the other posters said, it's all about what you want and then personal preference. Once you have flashed a few you will start realizing what you do and don't like about the ROMs and what you really want in them. (My first ROM I had no idea, I was like, lets just flash because it's cool and custom and I feel like it. Then I started noticing the differences between my first ROM and stock, realizing what they can actually do with it and what they cannot. From there I figured out what I was really looking for by going custom, and starting browsing the released ROMs to find it)
In short, your first ROM is just that, the first. It wont stay there long so it doesn't really matter which one you choose. Cognition, like stated above, is a good start because it's pretty close to stock. If you want to just straight into a very custom one and screw the baby steps, try something a little more feature rich. Eventually you will get into trying different ROMs with different kernels and test out over-clocking, etc...
I would recommend for your first that you don't go with an OC ROM though, save that for when you feel more comfortable with your ability to flash and tweak things.
I have never used the tool you are talking about because I feel more comfortable doing all the .zip stuff and seeing what is actually being done to my phone, not trusting something else to do it. The tools I do use are Odin3 and One Click Root/Unroot. If you want to try flashing without that tool but aren't sure of the exact steps or why they are necessary you can PM me and I'll help you out.
Welcome to the addiction of ROM flashing! (It's harder to shake then cigarettes once you start)

Do not flash any of the Gingerbread ROMs unless you really know what you are doing. They are still unstable and you risk bricking your phone. As for stable ROMs, there's a wide variety of them, and they're all based on Android 2.2, which is really fast. There is no best ROM, and it all depends on your personal preferences. Try visiting a few of the ROM threads to check them out, and hopefully that will help you decide which one to flash.

Thanks. I cant get it to work though.
Flashed the lockscreen and weather app with CWM. Killed my phone. Just startet looping at the "HTC quietly brilliant" screen.
No problem to fix and go back off course but still...
Can anyone tell me how to get it to work?
I tried flashing CoreDroid. It looks very nice and have many of the things i want. But i want it in the stock ROM.
Anyone can give my a kind of idiot guide to emplement some 3.0 stuff in my IS?
Me too, I'm new to customising Android. I have done iphones and psp in the past but the information is not clear on this topic and seems to be all over the place and spread accross many topics.
I currenty have flashed the standard virgin Rom to debrand my IS and I have made it s-off and its now rooted with clockwork mod recovery installed. I would like to install some Denver 3 stuff to the standard Rom but being a noob I'm reluctant to try with out a better understanding.
Could someone please give us noobs a straight forward guide in doing this.
Cheers

why don't you try the Virtuous Unity 1.25.0 Sense 3.0 based on Pyramid?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1122805
It works very well for people who like sense!
Yeah just downloaded it and about to give it a shot. I hope I dont screw up my phone. Never done this before.
I just figured it would be easier to add the stuff to an existing rom rather than flash a complete custom one.
Cheers
Pat
I personaly don't like the Sense 3.0 to much animation which gets kind of boaring after some time and sucks performance and battery!
Just my oppinion
well, with a Nabdroid Backup you should ot be worried to try a new ROM as you can always go back!
I tried the first relase of the Cyanogen ROM and that's the one for me so far.
I already liked the stock ROM on the Nexus S - but not the device itself.
So the Cyanogen ist very close - but better!
Is it easy to do? the instructions seem simple enough. I have made a back up of my existing rom, so if something goes wrong I can re flash my original rom and be back to square 1 correct.
Correct - it is a full image.
You go back exactly to the point where you created the recovery.
I love this feature - it makes it possible to try out a different ROM without loosing all the work you did on the ROM.
Last thing before I do it. It says to do a full wipe? Is this done in the recovery menu? do I do wipe data/factory reset as well as wipe cache partition?
Or is this a different thing all together?
Cheers
PAt
A wipe data/factory reset is sufficient. People will say do it three times, but you only have to do it once.

Im really just after the lock screen and the weather widget. The other stuff imnot fussed about.
The resolution on the unity rom is a bit funny. It all functions great tho.
I tried the android revolution HD and that worked except for the market wouldnt download.
Is there a way to just flash the lock screen and widgets to a stock un modified virgin au ROM?
Cheers
Pat
Would HIGHLY recommend this ROM:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1088498
There's nothing different to the Stock Rom apart from the fact it runs alot more smoothly.
You then install this:-
•HTC Sense 3.0 "All in 1" (version 0.3) for Android Revolution HD 1.0.x
And voila - Sense 3.0
Thats the one I had and the market didnt work, formated and flashed it 3 times.
hello guys! im also a newbie here(esp in android) but i also want to S-off my incredible S, i know that there are already several topics regarding s-off but honestly i dont know how to perfom it and im really afraid to brick my phone, can you please help me guys! any help will be greatly appreciated! thanks : )
i recently flashed Faux123's M7 (UV/Intelliplug/dfsync/FauxSound/s2w/Hybrid Linux 3.4+) [May-25] Kernel using TWRP. Now after checking everything else out, everything is in full working order except the Camera's. If anyone can offer help or links to help, I'd appreciate it very much. Thank You in advance.

Are you trying to run a custom kernel on a stock ROM? If so, there's might be your problem. Further, stop doing that--it's a very bad idea.

Yeah I am. Any stable custom ROMs you suggest for me to try? And supposedly it was only changing the Liboemcamera.so file or something like that. It doesn't matter though. I figured out that restoring it to a backup I made before I flashed the kernel fixed it. But now I have the problem I did before, with not being able to OC or especially UV and Fast Charge. As you know, this phones battery dies fast, and in the short time I was using Faux's kernel with UV/FC its battery life already had drastic improvements. So, can you help me get something stable like that?

Honestly, I'm surprised your phone booted without an issue. I've seen other folks who've flashed custom kernels on stock ROMs and be stuck in bootloops from hell.
TrickDroid and ARHD are both fantastic and I've frequently used both. They're also both running on Android 4.2.2, so they're the absolute latest you can get. ARHD focuses on refining and bettering the stock experience as much as possible without much changes. TrickDroid also has a stock look, but it lets you customize things a little more like the battery icon, clock location, etc. It's more your typical custom ROM, but it's not typical in it's awesomeness.
Thank god I'm so lucky. I never saw these problems in the forums for the kernels... No warnings, no instructions. I just followed the ones I remembered from my flashing days with the GS3.
I can find both of those on the forums, correct? And which do you prefer as a daily driver? Which one can I keep until stable CM10.1 comes out? Or maybe might want to keep even past that?

I bounce between these forums and the AT&T One forums trying to help folks out so I'm not sure where I first started seeing the stock ROM/custom kernel issues. Also I may spend too much time on these forums... >_>
Regardless, I'm a flashaholic. I swapped between ARHD and TrickDroid quite regularly. ARHD seems to be updated a lot quicker, probably due to the fact that it's tweaked less than TrickDroid. The fact that Mike has been around forever too probably helps. I don't know Torxx's work quite as well. That being said, I prefer TrickDroid over ARHD because of a couple tweaks that I like such as SMS screen on, center clock, and replacing the battery icon with a numbered percentage. Not sure if those tweaks are in yet, though, since the change to 4.2.2
Just a head's up on the AOSP front, there's been alot of reports that AOSP-based ROMs are having issues with the camera. Not that it isn't working mind you but that it's taking absolutely absymal shots. This is likely because HTC baked in some software magic to improve the the image quality and those features are missing from AOSP. I wouldn't use an AOSP ROM as my daily driver until the HTC One Google Edition has been released and hopefully it will have that software magic. Figured you'd like to know since the title of this thread is regarding the camera. :
Alrite well, cool. I think I'll check out ARHD tomorrow when I get home from finals. And thanks for the foresight on the AOSP, I doubt that I would've thought of that before hand. From what i understand, OTG is based on kernel, not ROM. And this is definitely not the thread to post this on. Use Tbaldens kernel for sense or GE, and thatll be your best bet.

Because this phone is so old/unsupported hardware, there is no real stable 4.4 rom, just szeszo's built, which has a LOT of bugs.
For a stable rom, you can try CM10, 10.1, 10.2. iirc there are no major bugs.
Sent from my Nexus 5
szeszo's CyanVivo is definitely pretty stable (the version based on android 4.1.x). If you wait a bit though, I'm sure all the Vivokat bugs (minus video recording) will eventually be sorted out...I'm actually using that as my daily go-to phone, it works well enough.
Thanks for reply

Sorry, got too busy in work.
I could wait on VivoKat. Just checked, szezso is optimistic about fixing the (only) 2 bugs in that build..
I have installed HTC official ICS OTA for the time being. Enlighten me if anyone knows more about any other stock 4.2+ ROM.
Also let me know views on this: NikRoms (Can't post links being a new)
Had considered this when installing the above...

I used Project X Rebirth for several months and it works great for me. Change the boot animation to one of the ones in the Theme folder here as the stock one hangs up a bit.
I reverted to Rebirth yesterday from VivoKat because I grew tired of charging my phone everyday.
Clear the Air please...
Going to install it since VivoKat seems pretty stable now.. :fingers-crossed:
I unlocked the bootloader on my Inc S from HTCDev.com. The process was easier than I had thought.
Now the doubts are --
Do I still need S-OFF to install VivoKat? I was reading this FAQ, which is quite nicely put, but still a little confused whether to S-OFF or not. I would prefer not to unless it is absolutely needed.
Second is, what if I want to revert to the official ICS RUU? Can I do that with unlocked bootloader and how? If S-OFF has to be done for above, how to and is it possible to revert to ICS RUU in that case?
Appreciate your time guys. Thanks already.

For many ROM's S-Off is not necessary, but it definitely make life easier.
This is a straight forward guide

Well I did do vivokat, it was smooth transition. Although I happened to do a mistake (I suppose. Posted in vivokat QA thread.)
flashed boot before recovery.
Does anyone have any links to downloading official ICS ROM with Sense 3.6?
@DuffyBank : you reverted to Rebirth because of battery drains in vivokat. Apart from that, can u pls compare the two? which one u find better?

Both are smooth, VivoKat is much faster and frees more memory (Sense I imagine?). I like the Sense interface and the camera is better in Rebirth than VivoKat.
