Does anyone intend to port the latest Nexus One ROM(s) to the Motorola Droid?
I am a Nexus owner who would like to give Froyo to a friend with a Droid. Neither root nor overclocking are important to me, but working radios and battery life are...
(Sorry if someone else has asked this before. I read the board before posting.)
-Thanks!
Re: Nexus FroYo port
You CAN get FroYo on your friends Droid IF he's rooted and has Koush's Rom Manager installed. From there you can get the stock FRF57 Verizon leak or use Peter Alfonso's Bugless Beast port, which is FRF84B (as of right now, he's actively developing it, and well I might add). The latter is very stable and decent with battery life. The former is somewhat buggy, and I don't reccomend it.
If you mean he isn't rooted then no, I don't believe there's a way (at time of posting) to get either of the Nexus builds onto it.
If he just wants a stock Froyo ROM... search Google for "droidlife Froyo frf84b" or "droidlife froyo frf57". FRF84B is the release version - Verizon will try to charge you to USB Tether (WiFi Tethering from Market Apps still work very well.) FRF57 and FRF75 are test releases - USB Tethering works great & free.

i was just curious if the hero was getting the 2.2 update? doesnt look like much of a difference but im still curious
It is highly unlikely that we will see an official release of 2.2, but the devs here on this forum will try to work on it. darchstar has already stated that when the 2.2 source is released and implemented into Cyanogen mod, he will port it over.
While it might seem that different, there are a lot of major changes, especially in speeed. The Market has an autoupdate feature in 2.2, Apps2SD is built in (but, I assume, it's not based on our same Apps2SD. Just the same function), and JIT is fully functioning and working as it should. The Nexus One running 2.2 runs almost 8 times faster than it does with 2.1, or so I've been told.
lol, let the 2.2 threads begin....
We barely got 2.1.
Im sure after the devs get froyo working, sprint will steal it, mod it slightly, leak it back out to the devs for them to tweak, and us to test, then sprint will release it officially about 6 months later, blaming htc for the hold up and it will still have tons of problems. Then the devs will figure out how to root it and sprint/htc will put out a update almost the next day to patch the root exploit.
Anyone else have a idea?

So would you say it will be an ......"extreme" improvement (har har har oh not funny). Yeah your right we'll probably never see an official release. Unlike tmobile who have said or rumored to say all their phones that can get it will.

Nope. I would, however, say it would be pretty Xtreme
I would love to see 2.2 on my Hero. Especially because that would mean I could go into Sprint and show them that my Hero is running faster than their EVO
thanks for the feedback guys. yeah i was watching videos of the nexus one running 2.2 and that thing was blazing fast!!!
i sent HTC a message last night asking if the hero was going to get the 2.2 release and this was there response...
(Hello Chris, Thank you for taking the time to contact HTC America Technical Support about your device. Before releasing a ROM update we have to be sure that the software is going to work properly on your hardware and on your carrier’s network. This testing does take some time but will result in an update that is optimized to work on your device and on your carrier’s network. While we want to release software as soon as we can we will only do so once the software has passed our quality standards. At this time we do not have any information about an update for your device. When the update is released it will be announced on HTC.com.)
So basically "We don't feel like it"

the 2.1s are still buggy... stock or not. i don't even want to think about 2.2 yet.
Only way to fix bugs is with updates.

I haven't seen any threads likely on custom ROM work. I'm sure someone is working on one. Is the focus on froyO on Gingerbread?

I saw a post from Pete on Twitter yesterday. He asked Koush to port clockwork recovery to the Nook Color so he could buy one and start porting ROMs to it. So all we are waiting on is a working recovery from Koush or Amon to start flashing ROMs. I have started working on an AOSP ROM, but I'm with Pete, we need a recovery first. Froyo definitely is the start, Gingerbread ROMs are just surfacing on the higher end processors (1GHz required supposedly). Ill probably offer Gingerbread theming for mine if I have time.

The 1ghz CPU requirement for Gingerbread is a myth, just fyi. Google has stated that any phone that currently runs Froyo should have no issues running Gingerbread -- in fact, they should see an increase in performance.
There are plenty of low end phones shipping with Froyo (ie, Huwai's Ideo line), so by that logic, there should be no reason, at least in regards to the CPU, that it Gingerbread couldn't run on the Nook Color.

I think the confusion started when people were thinking that Gingerbread would be Android 3.0. Honeycomb will probably be considerably more demanding than previous versions, since you can split the screen into "fragments," so Nook Color users might eventually need to O/C to get that version working well.

LG is also partly to blame. When asked if the Gingerbread would hit their Optimus line of phones, they made up a 1ghz minimum CPU requirement. They retracted that when Google engineers said no such thing existed.
Donate to cyogenmod in this thread. As soon as we get these guys some nooks, they can get us a custom recovery. Then ROM floodgates will open. Can't wait to see this thing running gingerbread

@op, I think we will see a new custom rom soon, some one will use the new update 1.0.1 with customize files like auto nooter to flash the nookcolor with (updated) modified files...
We still need.CWM ported to flash unsigned zips. I tweeted to koush on what is needed to work on it. I'd like to help where I can so I can begin creating a ROM for.this beautiful tablet.
Time will tell...Koush, Supercurio, and the CM team are busy with Gingerbread ports via the Nexus S.
Im sure we'll be able to get started soon.
Thanks

We just threw up a post about the latest Netflix update which brought support to the original DROID, but what we failed to originally realize is that the update removed the device check which means in theory, that it should be able to work on all phones. Well, guess what? I loaded it up on my DROIDX2 (which is “not” supported) and it installed just fine and is now streaming a video. I’m loading it up on other devices too, but wanted to make sure you all knew. Feel free to grab it below and install – let us know how it goes!
*Note – this is not a hacked version. This is 100% the market version.
Update: Works on Thunderbolt (rooted 2.3), DROIDX2, DROIDX (2.3), and Xperia PLAY.
Update 2: No XOOM support though.
Update 3: Looks like it’s pretty hit or miss. Definitely sounding like it’s not working on stock Thunderbolt which is a damn shame.
Cheers Brandon!

Doubt that will work or anything for that matter because they have been trying to get it to work on many devices on the main Android forums of XDA and not many people are having luck.
Seems like we'll just be waiting for now until Netflix releases something. They did just add...
LG Revolution, Motorola Droid and Casio G'zOne Commando
But no Epic 4G yet
For snapdragon 2.2 devices
Did the news get around about a guy named butcher pete?

gotta love verizon huh lol
It is not the epic 4g, it is hummingbird based devices on the 2.2 kernal. Our cm7 isnt built on gingerbread source. It is still on 2.2.1 source. The reason that you need 2.3 because it has better hardware support for the hummingbird processor due to the fist flagship device to have a hummingbird was on 2.3 release not 2.2 release. Also, our software DRM that Samsung gave us in our 2.1 and 2.2 based ROMs sucks/is unable to support Netflix web streaming.

So what would happen if we took the DRM from the leaked gingerbread rom and placed it into a froyo rom? Do you think netflix would work. I am took afraid of trying this out myself for fear of reflashing my entire rom and reconfiguring all my setting again.

Thanks for the info.....was'nt aware that 2.3 was built around the Hummingbird processor. Damn....that should really give our Epic's a kick in the ass once it's official. Combined with some overclocked kernels and EXT4, maybe then we will see this phone's full potential.......it only took 8 monthes

There's themed versions already, too.
My wife has Motorola Milestone that of course is no longer updated so it is stuck on 2.1, and recently it has started acting slow and freezing frequently, as well as more and more of the apps that she wants require 2.2. So I am looking to root and update so she can have a fresh start (I am sure some of the freezing will be resolved by cleaning the slate), enjoy the features of a newer kernel, and be able to get the apps she wants. I do have experience with ROMs (flashed a lot of ROMs to my old HTC Touch Pro, and even made a couple myself), so I doubt I will have any issue there.
My question, as the title states, is which is the best ROM for her? She definitely likes having cutting edge technology, but needs it to be stable. Or rather, I do, since I will be the one that has to fix any problems I would prefer that I don't have to reboot or reflash it every other day. Once or twice a month for an update is fine, maybe once a week if the ROM is bleeding edge but stable. I have looked at the new Cyanogen Mod 9 with ICS, but not sure if that is stable enough, so any input on that is appreciated.
Things to keep in mind:
1. This phone is from a smaller carrier (Nex-tech wireless)
2. This phone IS NOT active, i.e. it doesn't connect to a mobile data connection or a cellular tower. It uses wi-fi and is basically a portable computer for her (switched to an old non-smart phone to cut costs while we save up to switch to a new carrier when our contract is up)
If there are any other things that might help in picking a good ROM for her let me know so I can tell you.
Thanks!
I would personally recommend MIUI, if only I'm not having trouble with it messing up my Recovery.
and idk what u mean by the Milestone is stuck on 2.1. It can be updated to 2.2 officially.
To me, the most stable rom I've ever used is CM7 version 7.1.3 by HOHO Tho there are newer version, but to me, the latest version has black screen issues.
Thanks for the reply. I am actually in the US, so apparently even though my carrier distubutes it as a Milestone, it runs as a Droid. I have a small regional carrier that uses custom software, and it stopped updating it at 2.1. I was able to get it rooted and ended up using Cyanogen 7, so my wife is happily testing out android 2.3.1
I've run at least 30 different roms on my droid over the last three years and I can tell you hands down that peter's bugless beast wins hands down.
http://www.peteralfonso.com/2011/10/download-bugless-beast-v-gpa19-android.html
Stripped down, no bloat ASOP looks like the real rom and is fast as hell. I was able to run at 1300mhz no other rom has allowed me to go past 1200mhz without reboots/slowdowns.
Pete is the king of the OG Droid.
I run Steel Droid 10
After bricking My Droid 3 I had to literally dust off and charge up my OG Droid that's been sitting for over a year, did a clean install and I am in love with it my OG droid like I was the day it came out
he has milestone, not droid.
HONO is the stablest I've ever tried..
but this phone has some real issues with his locked boot loader,
so he freezes ALLOT no matter what..
I would recommend Cyanogenmod 7.1. That's android 2.3.7. Very stable. Working great on my Original Droid. I don't think the Milestone or the Droid have the hardware to run ICS.
Sent from my Droid using XDA
There is CM9 for the Milestone by kabaldan on here and there is UltimateICS I have CM9 installed and it runs ok the only problem I personally have is the limited space means I can't install the apps I had installed when I was using CM7.2.
Also UltimateICS was fast but it didn't work on my Milestone as I couldn't receive calls.

He has a CDMA version of the droid. They are called milestones by most of the carriers. It's the A855 I believe.
Anyways. Bugless beast is good if you want a ROM as close to stock as possible. Chevyno1' Simply Stunning 5.6 is a good Gingerbread rom and Chevy's Steel Droid is another really good gingerbread ROM. Chevy is also one of the few still developing for the original droid.
Peter Alfonso has probably some of the best kernels on his site for the droid. Very stable and lightweight. You may have to try a few of them until you find the right one for the phone. Each of these phones is different when it comes to the kernel. My phone I can't clock over 1000 or starts to boot loop. My wifes phone I can crank up to 1200 without an issue and it runs cooler then mine at 1000. Go figure.
I would also look up raidzero's rz recovery for the droid. It makes installing roms a snap.
Here is the thread I refered to when I rooted my phone. Download superuser before you start the root process. makes it easier.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=764470&highlight=z4root
Also a quick item. To get into recovery after you root turn the phone off. Hold down the x key as you are turning it on. release the x key when the M logo appears. this is helpful if you wind up in a boot loop.
Cm9 worked really good but if your wife isn't techy and wants a fast rom and good battery I would say cm6

Ok, ive had the Droid 4 ever since about a week before it came out. Ive rooted, tried out every ROM that is available. I have decided to unroot until i see further development on this device. Anyways, does anyone know if we are going to start seeing any worthwile ROMs popping up, and if this phone was worth rooting? Thanks in advance.
Once the official ICS update comes out, and brings with it the ICS kernel, you wont see anything more then there already is (which in my opinion is pretty good aside from a few issues). You can only do so much when you try to run ICS on a Gingerbread kernel
So basically, its just going to be ICS ROMs? Will there be any ROM ports or anything? And we wont be seeing anything like what is available for htc phones? Sorry, i switched to the droid 4 from droid incredible, so bear with me.
There are rom ports now (CM9, AOKP, Gummy) but they are missing some functionality due to the underlying Gingerbread kernel. Unless they unlock the bootloaders for moto phones, you will never see the same kind of development like you see for HTC phones aka custom kernels and what not. Once official ICS drops though you will start seeing fully functional ICS based roms for the D4 (aka fully working camera and hardware codecs)
