Hello, Do you think it possible to use other headphones instead those in the box for receive calls and use remote control? I have Htc desire headphones with controls for the music, but galaxy is not recognized them except as normal headphones. do you think it possible to modify Android and Touchwiz for recognize them or other wired headphones with remote control or/and answer button?
thanks a lot and sorry for my bad english
what is wrong with the ones that come with the Galaxy...
I actually hate the Galaxy S headphones. The sound quality is fine but I really don't like the style of headphones that insert into your ear canal. I find them extremely uncomfortable, they're bad for sharing and they seem to fall out of my ears when running. I substantially prefer standard ear-buds. Maybe it's an Australian thing, or just the people I know, but I've never met anybody who likes that style of headphones.
I haven't actually paid any attention to the HTC earphones but if they're standard ear-buds, good quality and can be purchased on their own then I might look into this a little further. The main problem will be whether or not the HTC headphone jack matches that of the Galaxy S (which is the same as the iPhone jack). If they physically match and I can get my hands on some I'll investigate modifying the Galaxy S' software to support them.
EDIT: Frenzy_Man, the Galaxy S headphone jack is the same as the iPhone and Samsung claim the Galaxy S is compatible with iPhone headphones. I haven't checked (I will when I get my Galaxy S back from repair) but I suppose that means iPhone headphones can be used to answer calls etc. In which case any iPhone compatible headphones should work with the Galaxy S.

If im not mistaken HTC uses the same wiring scheme as Apple (and from what I have seen they are minority), while Samsung uses the same as Nokia and rest of the world.
But I might me a bit wrong about the rest of the world stuff =)

The headphone jack of the iPhone and SGS are completely different. To be able to use iPhone heaphones with the SGS you need an adapter. I had to buy this adapter http://www.kvconnection.com/product-p/km-354r3m-r2f.htm to get my iPhone headphones working. If dupel is correct about the HTC headphone scheme then this adapter will be needed.
i can confirm the HTC desire headphones do not function correctly with the Galaxy S, having just tested them.
there's a channel or frequency missing entirely from the signal to the ear buds so makes its sound very odd indeed!!

Same kind of behavior with iPhone earbuds.

Seems to work fine if I use an elastic band to hold down the middle button on the headphone controls

Ah, sorry about the misinformation. I thought I read somewhere when I was originally comparing phones that the Galaxy S was iPhone headphone compatible. I must have got confused and it's the HTC Desire that is iPhone headphone compatible.

Does any one know where I can get this in the UK? I am desperate to get my etymotics hf2's up and running again, currently using an elastic band to hold down the button to create a decent sound.
so from what i understand from that link this is an issue with the iphone/htc headphones more than the galaxy s headphone socket?
As the converter is from iphone to any other 3.5mm socket..

Well, that's exactly what u get when i use cheap adapters. But when i use original Sony NUDE ones, they work good. So now i bought a Philips 3.5mm adapter instead of those cheap ones and it works great.
Im pretty sure its the same 3.5mm connector standard... Just that the galaxy has low tolerance for size changes.

Does this adapter (or any other) enable the mic function so I can use my headset as a headset?
Tried a 3,5mm duplicator and got great sound with my iphone compatible headset but the mic still don't work
Hi, thank you for your replay. I don't like galaxy headphones because it's in ear type and without remote control.
Guys, there's already a thread that discusses this extensively
To sum it it up, the i9000 is physically different than the iPhone, HTC and even the US variants of the SGS (Captivate, Vibrant, Epic, Fascinate - the part numbers for the 3.5mm jack and headset are different on the i9000 than those phones).
The mic and ground wires are reversed on the 4-pole male pins. There's no software way around this (though some have suggested there is, I could never find it, and my source for part numbers says same (no soft fix)).
The reason holding the mic button down increases sound is that you are shorting out the mic/ground wires, effectively making it a 3-pole tip. Any 3-pole tip adaptor will do the same, but then you lose the mic and ability to click to answer calls or pause playback.
The only fix is to find an adaptor that crosses those wires, or to build one yourself (like I describe in the link above).
(ps: shouldn't this have been a "General" topics forum thread and not a development one?)

The Galaxy S jack is not the same as the iPhone, it may look the same, but the wires are crossed, as indicated above.
IF you can find a software fix for this, I'll buy you a six pack!!!!!! I don't think it's possible.

You're shorting mic/ground as stated above. Bad fix, unless all you care about is louder music.

I wonder if the confusion is the difference between headphones and headsets?
Headphones are just three pole and don't have a mic. They should be compatible.
Headsets are four pole and include a mic. They are not.
Plus, don't believe everything any of these adaptor manufacturers tell you. I found one adaptor on the web that insists it will work with both the iPhone and the i9000. Not possible.
I'm using Philips adapter an I can use the button to answer calls and the mic functions too.

I'll take you up on that offer when I find a way
I'm currently doing some deep digging into the SGS kernel audio driver and anything related to it (including jack sensing), partly in an all-out effort to get stereo FM radio working.
From reports and partly from the kernel source it's already known that the SGS can sense the difference between either a 3-pole or 4-pole jack being plugged in, e.g. whether the cable is connected to either a headset (in which case it applies that dreaded sound muffling EQ fixable from either the Service Menu or with MixGet) or assumed line-out (in which case the audio is reference quality crystal clear) output. So there may yet be a way to trick it into doing what you want.
Hi all! I had an iphone for 6 months now and i have some great headphones with mic (zagg smartbuds). Now I'm a SGS owner. The problem, as we all know, is the 3.5 jack different connections. So I'm trying to find a 3.5mm, 4 conduct, iphone female to SGS male afaptor.
My first find is that http://www.kvconnection.com/product-p/km-354r3m-r2f.htm works but costs way too much.
Many great headphones out there are iphone compatible (so no SGS) and i think we need a solution for that. If anyone here is an android developer...maybe he can create a software solution too.
Unfortunately most apple products use non standard wiring for the headphones, so you are more likely to find normal-to-iphone adapters and not the other way around
I think even that will work because iphone jack output is TRRS and samsungs TRSR
So the cable you are talking about is a
(female universal) TRSR<--->TRRS (male iphone)
Only the last 2 conducts change. So if you put an iphone compatible headset in the female input you will get a normal output.
Do you know where can I find adapters like the ones you mention?
Or hack it?
Has anyone tried instead of buying an adapter, stripping the cables and switching the ground and the mic on an "iPhone-type" headphones?
Would be great to learn your experiences on this, I have a great pair of Bose headphones that I love, and would really enjoy using this on the Galaxy S....

can anyone confirm if the smartbuds are working with this adapter ?
that says its FOR the iphone, not for iphone earphones in other devices so that may not work.
this one does work for sure as ive bought it.
http://www.meelec.com/MEE_TRRS_Adapter_for_P_Version_Headphones_p/adptr-trrs-35.htm
Good find, indeed that one says specifically that it swaps the connections: "Adapter Pinout: T-T, R1-R1, R2-S, S-R2"
$10 isn't great but isn't too bad, the one I saw months was something like $20-30.

so i did some digging and cannot seem to find if the 3.5mm has the ability to do video out. the backseat babysitter has a broken dvd player, an incident with some random loose coins, but still works through the composite jacks. i would be nice to slap some videos on there and keep the critters entertained, vacation season is coming up soon.
That's cos it doesn't
thanks it was worth a shot.
you could get an iPad seatback holder and use a 3.5mm to composite/3.5/bt/or whatever cable and play movies like that. Most backseat babysitters don't have screens much bigger than the NC.

The headphone jack.
For example, IPod Video has composite out from headphone jack where you can output video signal through that.
My suggestion would be to buy a old Ipod Video 5G and push video through its headphone jack? (maybe get one with bad LCD? 30GB version may be pretty cheap).
I don't think Nook Color does video output through 3.5mm.
isn't it possible to make an app which captures the screen, encodes it to a composite video signal en send that like an audio signal to the 3.5 mm jack?

That would be nice, but unfortunately is not possible.
The hardware needs to support this function.
My phone, the myTouch 4G Slide, has video out capability through the headphones jack, using a 4 pole 3.5mm connection. (ipod/zune video cable)
If what you are asking was possible, every device capable of playing media with a headphones jack would be capable of video.
Unless I missed something in the teardown...but we'd have heard something about this before now if it was possible with all the development around this device.
You're welcome to try to write an app that would do this, I posted the tv-out apk for my phone in my phone's subforum here at xda for another member that lost theirs for their phone. Would make a good place to start, but I think you'll realize pretty quickly it's not going to work out.
Hi, I ask excuses if the matter has already been treated!
Are The headset for Galaxy S2 and known Galaxy compatible?
I wanted to buy these:
http://www.eastmaze.com/3.5mm-Handsfree-Headset-for-Samsung-Cell-Phone-White--p2964.html
but the seller has said that they are not compatible for the Note.
Are they compatible for many Samsungs among which S2 and others but for the Note no???
A little informed seller?
Thanks
for $3 is it really worth making a thread on here about it

They both use the exact same standard 3.5mm TRS headset connector. Of course it'll work.
The site doesn't say that it's "not compatible", it just doesn't list the note explicitly.

Thank you!
I have the Note from a few days and I come from a HTC.
Do not know the compatibility of headsets. Then should all be compatible, at least the Samsung ... is that correct?
Thank you for the information.
I have a set of iPhone specific Sennheiser MM 70i
I purchased them for my Galaxy S i9000 and had to use a crossover adapter for it to work, today I plugged it in to my Note and found the sound was near perfect without the adapter. Not only that, but the button works properly now (didn't on the i9000) and so I can pause, answer, next track. The volume buttons still do nothing but thats life.
The microphone isn't the loudest in picking up sound, but it works just fine.
So I am wondering, does this mean that Samsung changed the wiring so it works with the iPhone head sets?
Already rumors circulating that the 3.5 audio jack will be eliminated on the next iteration of Samsung Galaxy phones. That's too bad. Basically a deal breaker for me as I will not purchase any phone with a notch or missing a 3.5 audio jack, (and I would argue one with a quality DAC attached).
Looks like next time that I'm looking to replace my phone, it will be with a much cheaper Chinese phone and that I'll be using the money left towards a dedicated DAP from here on out.
Oh well...
It's idiotic to believe such rumours so early on when the don't even have a single reputable photo of the phone
they have said that since s6 and here we are

Well, when every other manufacturer except LG is doing it, I could imagine Samsung doing it, too. Also they already presented their AKG bluetooth lineup. It would make sense moneywise to kill the jack, so they can sell those better...
I hope not, if they stay with it, they'll get all the headphone jack people on their side. Even right now, I only switched to Samsung because they're the last remaining headphone jack phones with a community.
I'd love to go LG, but there are just no ROMs, kernels or other mods at all.

Just because it's more comfortable to wear doesn't mean it's better in general.
Quality is worse, not just because of codecs, but also because there are actually no good wireless headphones out there.
Yes, I can convert my IEMs to wireless, but then I'm still stuck with just AptX, because there are no "wireless cable" options for LDAC / AptX-HD, except I'm gong with a bluetooth DAC - Which would be even less comfortable than the normal cable in the first place.
I don't even start how unstable LDAC and AptX-HD are.
Just because you find it ok, doesn't mean it's indeed ok to remove the headphone jacks. At least until we get a proper replacement tech where we don't sacrifice anything.
