This isn't really news to most people here and it also doesn't directly have anything to do with development, at least not in the way of helping anyone get a ROM out.
Looks like the droid to me. Also I'm not sure if this is actually built by google or just something from motorola/verizon.
Yeah that looks like the new verizon version of Android that will suck because its on verizon. it will be locked down where Rooting wont be a possibility. Nice pics though.
**** looks sick, but itll be much sicker when cyan gets his hands on it
Wow, you are all quite against Verizon, huh? I've been with T-Mobile now about 15 years, but they still do not have very good service when I am here in my house. I have to fight to get more than 1 bar, and when I do I need to stand in one spot and not move or my call drops, 3G is a joke here too. In using a Verizon phone the past few days it has 2-3 bars here in my house, and no issues with data. I have considered moving over since they are offering up that Android phone in the next few days, but if you are saying that it will be limited badly I will not go.

Actually from what I hear, Verizon's not touching the phone (aside from their logo stamped on it). They are not touching the OS. Full GPS, Wifi, etc. I look forward to seeing if anyone can root this =) (it's only a matter of time, really... haha)

Hey Tom I am in AZ also and I was with the big V for a very long time. They have wonderful service probably the best, now with that said...I did leave once T-mobile brought the G1 to this world. I got fed up with Verizon's crappy cell phones that they put out along with the crappy software every single one of there phones run. They block everything so you are not able to do anything cool and awesome to the phone. If I know Verizon they are not going to want you or let you do anything to there android phone that might give you something for free. So rooting a phone lets you do so much to a phone like teather, which verizon will block in a heart beat cause they want to charge you an additional $15 to let you do that. Verizon also only lets you use 5gigs of data before they start charging you extra (overage fees). Verizon also has there own apps store which they will make you use. Read this:
http://www.engadget.com/2009/07/13/verizon-to-its-smartphones-thou-shalt-have-no-other-app-store-b/
I have switched to Tmobile and I dont regret it I never look back. I love my G1, I love the things I am able to do with it. I dont know where you live but I am not in the Phx area, I am in a 2G area and I always have 3 or 4 bars. And data out here even for 2G its not that bad.
Last Verizon is like Microsoft they hate anything Open Source they will do anything to Kill Open Source. They want there dirty little hands on everything you do on there network/product.
Hope this helped.

Motorola Droid by all accounts.
More here: http://www.pcworld.com/article/174219
it can't "just be on verizon" this is ANDROID 2.0 ECLAIR - which should be available to ALL "google experience" android users OTA from their carriers.
ps - too bad the moto droid is a FUGLY BEAST - WHAT IS THAT EXTRA PIECE THTAT STICKS OUT THE BOTTOM AND CURVES UP WITH VERIZON WRITTEN ON IT? WHY DOES IT EVEN EXIST? The phone is HORRENDOUSLY designed, and i literally want to throw it against the concrete as hard as I can everytime i see pics of it.
FUGLY.
BEAST.
Thread should be moved...but HAVE YOU SEEN the broadcast tv commercials for the motorola DROID? Totally pwns the Iphone

Outside of major metro areas Tmob can be lacking in towers, i live about 30mins outside of philadelphia and tmob is great, but 20 mins down the road its gprs only, some areas are edge, so they have upgrades yet to do.
Verizions tech. Was upgradeable to 3g where gsm needed more expensive equip. To go 3g, but the switch to 3.5/4g will be easier for gsm than the wcdma towers.
In more rural areas around here verizion has very good service.
Philly metro was one of the first few tmob areas to go 3g, but at my house I still suffer with 9600baud gprs, its just a tad faster than my old 2400baud amiga modem strapped to my brown C=64(i think i just gave away my age)
There is tons of info on cell tech, google it.

Don't feel bad, I am right there with ya! Remember Mach5 or the Fast Boot carts? lol C-64 was a fun machine. load "*" ,8,1
Can't wait to try put a Droid and see what it can do.
Tom
i just got this phone yesterday. it's a pretty good phone and feel solid but what dissapoint me is the web browsing speed. i live in tampa and i heard we got hspa. so i dunno why i'm getting 0.40-70 mbps most of the times. the guys who work at t-mobile show me their speed test on their nexus one shows around 2-4.0 mbps.
anyway to fix this problem? did i got a faulty device? i usually try the web in my house and i dunno if that's the reason why my nexus one doesn't get fast speed. but my evo 4g runs okay.....even tho it's from sprint.
You sure that you have the T-mobile version of the nexus one?
AKA- is it displaying the 3g Icon?
okay, i've just drove around tampa and speed test my nexus one's 3g. the highest i went up to so far is 2.61 mbps. that's the highest i think i've seen so far from my nexus one. even my sprint's evo 4g doesn't go up that high. that's not bad! lol i'll try to compare those two again tomorrow when i'm at work. i guess the reason why i got slow speed is because i'm in a crowd neighborhood community and t-mobile coverage is not as good compare to when i go to the main road. even tho i did i got 1.36 mbs yesternight when i stepped out of my house. in the house....it's not so good.
well, i'm glad it's not my nexus one problem and more to do with my area. now i get go return my evo 4g and save some money on my family plan. gotta admit tho, sprint's 3g stay consistent most of the time compare to tmobile.
and yea, i checked the inside back of my phone yesterday and it was for tmobile. it shows 3g most of the times too. thanks man. cheer!
In my opinion, sometimes those radio waves just don't pass through walls as easily as gamma particles do. Now, if we could figure out a way to get a phone to use gamma radiation, but not kill people or give them cancer, that might be a pretty sweet setup!! Sorry, this probably makes no sense, but I am tired, and its late.
make sense lol. could it be the material of the walls? because when i'm at walmart or some of the other stores, the 3g on my evo 4g is still fast. haven't tried the nexus yet.

I don't know if what you're saying is true or not, but I think I rather have low cellphone signal than cancer lol..
I just seem to get worse 3G reception when I go inside a building. Like in my house, I am getting 200 kbps, but outside it will be closer to 700 sometimes. It really bums me out
But, yes, I agree with you. Bad cell phone reception is better than getting cancer. Tho there are some nuts that think that cell phones WILL give you cancer, lol.
I have been looking and looking but i cannot find anything. All i can find is the Blackberry Torch but i would like to stay here on XDA. I have had the Nexus one and i really dont want it again.
The Samsung Captivate just doesnt stand out to me. Its just like the N1 and is to big IMO. I really like the Desire Z but its T-mobile, so what are my choices here? I want something new that is not an Iphone with Android.
Dude, Moto Flipout. Case closed.
good day.

No thats to small i wouldnt even be able to use 3g then
htc Desire @D what about the motorola droid x?! sorry dont know much about at&t since I live in the uk
ATT oversold
The problem is not the phone it is the carrier. They oversold the bandwidth on the 3g-net and That is why I do not have them anymore. They kick you down to 2g all the time and in the west where I am they are King of dropped calls That is why i am on T Mobile. They have problems but my connection it typically 2.5mb download and 1.5 up on average
I have to agree with oka1. Not only do they kick you down to 2g, they charge you for chunks of data instead of an unlimited plan. And after the exclusive contract with Apple dries up, I don't know how much longer they can stick around.
If anything, stay away from the crackberry. Worst selling phone in the history of smartphones (besides the Kin lol)
Honestly, if you are in-between contracts, I'd switch. T-Mobile has a lot of good things going for it (HSXPA compatible with ALL 3g phones, unlimited data, flexpay plans, etc), and it's still considered one of the smallest carriers in the US. And, let's not forget how the G1 debuted on T-Mobile
If you're the patient type, I'd wait until AT LEAST December to purchase a new phone, as anything you buy now will be obsolete by January (what with all the craze about dual-core processors up to 1.5 GHz).
I haven't had any problems with speed or dropped calls with the Tilt 2. I've had it for about 3 months now, first tilt before that no probs either.
But like the others here have said, a lot of it depends on your location.
So much is planned to happen with cricket this year I was wondering what everyone thought about ZIO. First of all the Huawei X5 is supposed to becoming out (which sports an 800MHz qualcomm and has 2.2 standard with possible update to 2.3 <sighs>) Also cricket is planning upgrades and phones to support 4G LTE (can be found in article towards the bottom.) So is it really worth investing more time, money, and energy into apps and upgrades for the zio? I really like that phone but with all this on the horizon maybe itd just be better to wait?

The thing with all tech products is that there is ALWAYS something "on the horizon". What it boils down to is if you want the Zio, then get it. If you don't, then wait.
If you want to wait for a new phone, just keep in mind as soon as you are sure that it is the phone you want, you're going to figure out that something "new" will be coming out soon.
I never plan on having the "latest" tech because that is just a losing battle. I just look at what is out now and ask myself if there is anything more significant that I can not live with coming out in the next few years. To be honest 4G LTE seems to get mixed reviews. That being the case, I expect there to be a lot of work going into the system and the products for the foreseeable future. When it improves, then I will get a new phone. I don't expect that to be anytime soon though.
One last note, from what I understand 4G LTE is going to make flashing to another carrier more difficult. Some of the current carriers whose phones can be flashed on 3G will find that their phones may not be compatible on each others 4G LTE networks.
Thanks!
@magickalshadow
those were all very good points and definately some stuff to think about on the note of 4G. i already have a zio. i meant more like now with 2.2 should i pour a bunch of more money into getting it just the way i want it or should i wait on say the x5. while i do realize tech is constantly evolving cricket is always a step behind. for example the x5 with its higher processor could open flash possiblities as well as more current tech then again someone could crack it for zio too. i guess it all boils down to as you say its either do it or wait. Thank you for your input! =)
The ZIO is good for now. I would wait on the X5 until its out for a while and let the price drop and read some reviews.

I just wanted to share my overall experience with the Thrill from day one to today just because my trip has been one wild ride.
Day -1: A Thrill was flaunted, I saw the 3D capability and it's overall power and had to have it.
Day 0: Obtained Thrill for cost of first month's service (got on family plan), AT&T Froyo FW, immediately did research on getting GB onto the bastard cause I wanted built in VoIP calling.
Day 2: Obtained the release of GB the day after it came out and was confirmed (I hate rumors). My experience was a little faster, but not by much. Speeds didn't change, still getting around 4mbit down and 1.5mbit up at my place, and the data service at work is almost non-existent, AT&T fail.
Day ~15-20: Service cut off, stupid ex who I got on the family plan with so I could get the phone for free didn't pay her portion of the bill, all phones cut off.
Day ~40: Finally rooted and CWM'd the Thrill, made emergency backup of the phone. Started playing around with flashing CFWs onto it and overclocking it.
Day ~55: Finally got tired of walking around with just an MP3 player and wifi browser in my pocket. Walked into a T-Mobile store, told them flat out, "I'm bringing my own phone, I just need the SIM card and some service" and explained that it's an AT&T phone and I would get around that myself, I'm savvy enough. They tried to sell me an ICS phone (I was tempted), but alas, I like the 3D Thrill well enough I plan on using this badboy for at least a year until a new more awesome 3D phone comes out. Later that night, I flashed AcidHazard Kitchen 4, and obtained a network unlock key, now on T-Mo.
Speed comparisons using Speedtest.net app
@Home (native T-Mo tower serviced)
AT&T HSPA+ 5mbps down/2mbps up at best, average 3mbps down/1mbps up
T-Mo HSPA 10mbps down/4mbps up at best, average 8mbps down/2mbps up
@Work (native AT&T tower serviced)
AT&T HSPA+ 6mbps down/2mbps up at best, average 2mbps down/<1mbps up
T-Mo HSPA 4mbps down/2mbps up at best, average 2mbps down/1mbps up
The speed difference at home is night and day, at work I keep having to reset my data, I'm not the only T-Mo user in the office with this problem. It appears that AT&T's tower is being over-taxed and boots peered (T-Mo/Verizon 4G) users from data, but allows calls to pass through without fuss.
I'll be happy to share any details as I'm sure somebody will be interested.
Myself. I love the Thrill. I've had the Motorola Droid 1 (Verizon) (Wasn't able to activate this for some reason. I must have gotten a bad phone, but I still got to keep it), HTC Droid Eris (Verizon), HTC Evo 4G (Sprint) and finally the Thrill (AT&T).
Bar none, the best phone I have owned. I don't care too much for the 3D as it is just a novelty at this time. I love how it feels in my hand, the other phones I have had just didn't fit well in them. Here's my breakdown:
3D: Meh. It's OK to "wow" my friends from time to time whom have never seen 3D.
HDMI: I wish the HDMI worked as well as it did on my Evo 4G, as I have to wiggle it sometimes to get it to work, but it's again a "wow" factor.
So those 2 items, which are what sets this phone apart from others are just novelty to me.
So, in point, it is the same to me as all the other phones, it is just comfortable for me.
Glad you're voting to stay aboard the ThrillShip. I know I will until my service is ready for an upgrade. By then Android 6.0 will be out and I will then get a phone for that OS.
I've had this phone since November. Within the first week I rooted it and flashed doomed Froyo onto it. I liked showing off the 3D effect and taking 3D pictures for a while. I've had my ups and downs with this phone since I flashed gingerbread onto it. Lately I've been loving it because it's been pretty snappy! The next phone I get will be a nexus. I'm tired of having to wait on LG and AT&T for updates
Sent from my LG-P925 using xda app-developers app
I also picked up my thrill in november because it was the best phone att had at the time with "4g" I explained to the salesman that I needed att's 4g so it could match the 3g speeds I got on t-mobile with my HD2. I found out soon enough that specs on the thrill didnt match the software they had on it but hey its still pretty good. had some nice benchmarks with promethius rom recently but phone calls were an adventure. didnt know if it was going to lock up when I was answering the phone or when I hung up. After a couple flashes to fix that I ended up with no characters on the phone. I tried reflashing promethius and stock both were buggered. The one I flashed night before last seems to have everything in order. The exception being the included tether app will lock up the phone but native tethering works fine.
The one that fixed my thrill was thrill seeker 2.1, its not overclocked but its smooth and nicely themed
Download speeds seemed to be about 6-7 mbps for the longest time until I discovered the "phone" apn through a google search for settings. after the "phone" apn I am consistantly 10-15 mbps at my house (they just put a tower 1/4 mile from my house.) At work every network is crap including the wifi and I work on the IT floor.
to use 920 roms I didnt seem to need the flex tweaks that callmearia suggested.
If they had dual core wp7 phones I would already be there because I just like em.
