Should I root? - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a Google direct Nexus One, running FRF91 OTA and I'm wondering if I should root it. What advantages does rooting my device bring me? Is there an easy way of rooting without unlocking the bootloader? Can I install a custom theme without rooting? Can I keep the stock FRF91 rom and still maintain root and OTA downloads?

rooted with OTA?

Can i root my froyo 2.2 keep the stock rom and receive OTAs? I basically want to have root without any modded rom's and be able to get OTA updates.
as long as you have the stock recovery you're ok for OTA
OTA updates will remove root, so you'll have to re-root.
You need stock recovery to apply OTA's and custom recovery to root.
Is your bootloader unlocked?

I searched forum for that solution, but without results.
It would be nice to have tutorial for this.

No my bootloader is locked
So then you'll be able to use an OTA but you'll lose root. With a locked bootloader that would be bad. Best to not use OTAs and instead rely on pre-rooted updates posted here. Of course you may need a custom recovery for that.

In regards to stock recovery, where can i get a copy of it. I wanted to return to stock recovery to get the OTA so i don't have to perform manual updates. I currently have Amon's recovery.

The "security fixes" in FRF91 include patching the exploit used to gain root with the bootloader locked.
So, if you revert to stock recovery and then install the FRF91 OTA - you will not be able to regain root unless you go back to a previous passimg, update to FRF85B and then install a repacked, pre-rooted FRF91 through custom recovery.
Basically, you can't have root on a fully stock FRF91 OTA
So to get root we now need to void our warranty? That's annoying.
No
From FRF91 you need to PASSIMG back to an earlier build, then update to 85B. The root with locked bootloader method works from there.
Then, as stated above, you can use a re-packed update to FRF91 to keep root. You just can't use the OTA to FRF91 and keep root.

[Q] Is it Possible to have have Root with complete Stock and able to OTA update?

Hey guys just wanna ask, is it possible to be Rooted but running fully stock with OTA updates? I just want to have root on my One without customizing it.. Simply Rooted and full Stock with OTA updates.. Thanks in Advance!

[Q] Root with OTA's?

On my Transformer tablet, I can root, and use Voodoo OTA rootkeeper to update via OTA and maintain root on the stock firmware + root.
Is this possible with the HTC One? From the FAQ, it appears as if I'll have to manually flash for every OTA if I want root.
Thanks!

[Q] Rooting without future downgrade/upgrade

Hey guys, I just finished downgrading from Lollipop .6 back to 4.4.4 on the Pure Edition (US) and upgrading to 22.21.11. I couldn't update to .11 from .6. I have a some questions now that my whole process is complete...
1 - Is their a way to root the Pure Edition that would allow me to take future OTAs without needing to downgrade next time? If so, I am wanting to root my phone again, where is the safer root method? I used CF-Auto Root when I rooted back in November.
2- Or is the downgrade/upgrade always going to be necessary on Lollipop on the Moto X (2014)?
3- Can one make an unrooted custom recovery nandroid image by booting to the custom recovery from adb? If so, what is the procedure? I would like to make a nandroid of my phone before I root it, so I can have that custom image to flash back to if I need to update Lollipop the same way again.
Thanks for all your help guys! I really appreciate it! Merry Christmas!

Rooting stock Nexus 6 AT&T

I have a Nexus 6 that i would like to root. Currently everything is stock, directly out of the box. I have a few questions concerning the process.
1.) What's the easiest, simplest way to root and obtain superuser privileges?
2.) Will i be able to get OTA updates with the device rooted? If not what do i have to do to update and re-root?
3.) I don't want any kind of customer firmware or recovery. Just stock vanilla android with superuser privileges. Possible?
I've found conflicting information to all the above questions on various websites.
All-in-all my main goal is to have a Rooted, Stock, Vanilla Nexus 6 with Root privileges.
Thank you!
Start here. #3 has the instructions for unlocking the bootloader and rooting.
You do not have to flash a custom recovery if you don't want to.
