First off, I just want to say thanks for anyone who might be able to be of some assistance. I've tried searching google and the forums but haven't had any luck. If I've missed something, please feel free to hit me upside the head with the spoon.
I've recently been having problems with my Tilt regarding charging/battery issues. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=2220715&postcount=37
Here's a quick rundown of my history...
- Can use Active Sync just fine
- When trying to charge, it says charging but won't charge
- No visible damage to the mini usb plug (at least to me)
- Had accident where the usb cable was pulled out from Tilt
Now...
I recently bought a charger that will just charge the battery separately from the phone until I can get it repaired. It's working fine so far except one issue. Whenever I try to power off the device (hold the power button till prompted to turn off), it'll power off then it'll power itself back on after 3 seconds. I did a hard reset to see if that would fix anything but it didn't. The only way to keep the phone off is to take out the battery. But once I put the battery back in, it'll power on by itself. The power button doesn't seem to be sticking or anything but I guess anything is possible. If anyone has any ideas I would appreciate it very much!!!
(I'm currently running the stock AT&T Rom without any programs installed. Also, I've never had any other Rom flashed on it.)

There is an option somewhere in power settings that enables/disables the Tilt from charging when connected to a PC. This may be the cause of the first issue.
However, the fact that it won't stay powered off...I have never heard of that before it sounds like a hardware issue. If your Tilt is still covered under warranty I would get it replaced.

Thanks for the reply! I tried adjusting that setting along with any other settings I could find regarding power but all without any luck.
I'm pretty sure it's a hardware issue as well, but I guess what I'm really wondering is if any one can make a semi-educated guess as to whether this could be involved with my mini usb plug issue or if the motherboard is just screwed
I'd love to send it in for a replacement but of course my warranty expired 5 days before the problems started

I'm not a hardware guru with HTC, although I have alot of experience troubleshooting PCs and Servers. I would say that it is unlikely that the USB port is what is causing the device to keep turning on.
In any event, are you qualified or ready to try an replace either one yourself (usb port or motherboard)?
There are 3rd party services that will fix the device...but they aren't cheap...it can cost $1-200 bucks or maybe more.
Are you running the Stock ROM/Radio/SPL? Or did you flash anything new?
You may want to revert everything back to defaults and see if the problem persists.

I'm handy with computer hardware and everything but not really with small electronics. I was willing to send it to a repair shop to have the usb plug replaced in hopes of fixing my charging problems but now I'm not sure if it'll be worth it if there's a bigger/more expensive problem.

I'm currently and always have been on the Stock Rom. I bought the phone as a refurb so who knows if someone here had it before me and flashed a bunch of roms . But since I've had it I've kept it running the stock AT&T rom. I also did a hard reset after I noticed the problem but it help anything.

Hmm..yeah...refurb doesn't sit well with me.
At least the problem isn't a crippling one...since you can charge it with a stand-alone charger. As far as not staying off....that's kind of annoying, but I don't generally turn my Tilt completely off. You can always just put all the power saving stuff on to cut down on battery.
So, it seems like something you may have to live with, or pay for repairs. Hopefully someone can offer a better miracle cure than those suggestions...

I was a little weary of buying a refurb at first, but it was actually in great condition and worked just fine until when I accidentally kicked the cable out of it. But thanks for the suggestions. And you're right, it's still very usable, just a bit more of a hassle right now. Hopefully someone out there has something for me.
Exact same problem as dieneverknowing. I am going to try some new batteries and see what happens.
- When trying to charge, it says charging but does not charge

im having the same issue on my old tilt. i took it apart. and still no luck . no visible damage, gonna clean everything and put it back together.
was this problem ever solved. sorry for bumping an old thread. But this is my same issue.
Hey don't worry about bumping an old thread. I meant to do the same when I got my phone fixed.
Turns out it was the sync connector that had damage. I sent it to PPC Techs for this service and it made it like new. I never tried to take it apart, but I could only assume that at some point in time, one of the pins in the connector became separated from the motherboard.
thats what it looks like to me. i have it narrowed down to the board with the usb connector. but not sure yet. How much was that service. i would replace it my self if i can find that part at frys today.
Service was $80, and then you had to pay shipping both ways. I had looked into replacing it myself, but my small electronic skills aren't good enough for me to risk it on a pricy phone. I remember seeing the connector part somewhere online for $40 I believe, but I can't remember where though.
But PPC Techs had it repaired in less then 24 hrs after receiving it. And they did a great job. It feels more solid then when I had originally bought the phone.
*EDIT IN BOLD* I let my phone "charge," (it has no LED signals now when it charges) then took the battery out, pressed and held the menu button and placed the battery back in. The phone is now working and has booted up. I hope that helps anyone else that encounters this problem.
---original post:
I've done a search for this topic on several forums and tried several things, but at this point nothing is helping. This is my last shot at fixing this phone or getting something else entirely. Tmobile recommends replacing the phone.
My phone has been running slow for a few days, but today it started freaking out and flipping between screens or opening apps all by it's self. It locked up and nothing worked, not even powering down, so I removed the battery. When placed back in, the phone goes to the bootloader screen without even being turned on. None of the buttons are sticking, either, and the camera button appears to be fine, even clicking when pressed.
I did a a reset on it, wiping it and rebooting, but the phone goes straight back to the bootloader screen. I tried to plug it in to charge and start over, but it's not even charging. In fact the phone won't do anything when it's plugged in and when I take the battery out the bootloader screen stays as long as it's plugged in.
The screen currently says:
DREA100 PVT 32B
HBOOT-0.95.0000
CPLD-4
RADIO-2.22.19.26I
Sept 2 2008
If it's plugged in, it will sit at this screen and do nothing, but if it's not a white bar crosses the screen stating:
"Serial0"
When it turns back on, I press and hold the menu from the bootloader screen I see the words:
Loading
No image found
I'm not sure what to do with it at this point, other than a nice paperweight.
Well, I was completely wrong about the "fix." It seems the phone does indeed load, but the arrow key and power key do not work at all. I have to use the home button, the phone is slow, and it flips through different screens on it's own. When I finally do power down, it goes back to the bootloader.
Also, the phone is running hot and staying hot. It loses it charge super fast, maybe because it won't stay idle.
I'm thinking I'll have to contact tmo at this point. D:

If you do (which you should not), don't tell them you were rooting it. That's a get-out-of-warranty-free card.
Another one??
Seriously? Another junior member starting another question thread in the development section?
It sounds like hardware issue with your phone, to be honest. I mean, get to recovery (if you can) do a total wipe, and reformat your sdcard, then flash your rom again. (I'm guessing you ARE rooted and running a custom rom?) If that does nothing, yeah, see if you can send it back to tmo.
And.... dude? This forum is NOT for questions. It's for contributing to Android development on the HTC Dream. Hence... Dream Android Development. You're not doing any development, so don't start a thread here! Sorry to take it out on you, but there's been a flood of these lately. Questions go in the forum called Dream Q&A (HINT: The "Q" stands for Question), Android development goes in Dream Android development. See how nifty that is?
MOD EDIT - Moved to Q&A Forum
lol you should just have it replaced. this could mean more problems down the road
Actually, no, I never rooted and never planned on it. Because I don't know what to do, nor do I desire to mess up my phone by doing something I don't fully comprehend. Rooting serves no purpose for me, and I like how it looks so why go for a custom mod?
These problems just started up on there own, which I was told by tmo it was a hardware issue, but by a friend that it was software related. This is the 4th phone that has bugged out on me since I've had tmobile and honestly I'm disappointed with it and their service. I didn't want to wait for warranty AGAIN. But I guess I have to.
Nothing seems to fix the phone, it no longer charges or goes into safe mode, so it may just be dead.
As for posting it in the wrong place, that was my fault and I'm sorry, lol. No worries for the yelling, it got moved anyway, and thanks.
And I'm not a dude. I'm a chick.
Guess I should state, I was here to see if I could fix it before I go to tmo, because if I get another refurb that quits working after 2 months I'll be leaving them for good.
I guess we can consider this closed, because if my friend can't help me, I'll be in the stores checking out Sprint and Verizon's new androids. Or stick with tmo and check out the Cliq. I'm not happy with HTC or their products and I rushed into buying the g1 for the mytouch to come out 1 week later. So, lesson learned.
And thanks for the replies.
LOL! You phail... If you have an issue with HTC phones, perhaps this phone is more up your alley. http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_UWuhkLMS00k/SsTb87QXjKI/AAAAAAAAAdw/N9thWXu30nc/s320/phone.jpg
Has anyone ever had any issues with the backlight on the Hero?
Lately, sometimes, when I turn my phone on or something, it's as if there is no screen at all. It stays black, eventhough I know that the OS is running. I've even tried rebooting, taking out the battery, etc... I can tell it's booting normally because it does the little vibrate, and then vibrates once the OS is fully loaded, etc... cept, when this is occuring, I cannot see anyting on the screen. If I tilt it just right, I can JUST BARELY see the outline of a window or something (whatever is up on the screen at that time). Then after dealing with this issue for a couple of minutes, and rebooting a few times, it works itself out.
I'm thinking I'm starting to have some type of hardware failure, but really don't want that, because I'm due to upgrade to the EVO here in about a month and don't want a stupid replacement just so I can go buy a new phone a month later, ya know? Anyway, wondered if anyone has had the issue before and what, if anything, they may know to do to fix it.
Thanks guys!
Yes I get the same issue off and on. I think it has to do with CM6 and the brightness settings. Not sure though.
For some reason when I flash CM6 it sets the Automatically Adjust Backlight setting to be off. I figured it was just the nature of the rom, so everytime I flash a new one, I go and turn it on in Display settings.

No man, I'm saying, even when I first turn on my phone, I dont even see the white HTC screen. It's completely black, but vibrates like normal when I press the power button to initially turn it on. It's fukd I'm pretty sure. I can't see a thing on it, not even in recovery. It's completely black, but vibrates at the correct times it should vibrate (when I first press power button to turn on, when the rom initially boots up, etc...)
I'm thinking my hero is dead....
I only had a little less than a month to go before I could get an EVO too.... damn phone.
Have you done any damage to it? Sprint might replace it for free.

Nope, I didn't do anything to it... unfortunately, I'm stuck with CM6 installed on it, because I can't see it to be able to switch back to the stock ruu... LoL
so I hope they don't notice and then say, well, too bad, u'r screwed because u rooted u'r phone. But no, my phone is still immaculate except the 'End' key is chipping off (the paint). That's about it
I'm hoping maybe they'll let me just upgrade to the EVO since I'm due in about a month anyway. I doubt it, but even if they give me a replacement (a new one) then I'd be okay with that.
Welp, they ended up replacing my phone with a replacement (refurbed) Hero... I pretty sure this one is 99% new though, not a single problem aesthetically and it seems to be running froyo quite smoothly. It basically feels like a brand new phone (which according to Sprint Reps, there's an 80% chance of getting a new replacement and 20% chance of getting a used replacement). I'm thinking I'm in the 80% range
Very happy thus far... just my touch screen is a little quirky right now b/c I installed a clear screen protector and believe some of the moisture is interfering with touches... which has been getting better as the hours go on. So that's' good!
Thanks guys on the info.... It's just fine for getting me through until Sept. 15th so I can upgrade meself on the EVO!!!!
We shall see if it holds up until then
Take ya'lls and thanks for all the replies
You should get the epic instead. Lol
(IMHO)
Sent from my HERO200 using XDA App
I've read similar posts without trying any answer about what happened so far and what do I have to expect.
My N1 is dead, I'm not able to turn it on neither in normal mode nor in recovery. It seems it doesn't get any power, I've tried to change the battery, using different power supply (USB cable, car dock and regular charger) without any success.
I've already contacted HTC support and I'm waiting to deliver them the phone. Warranty has expired.
Can you tell me what do you think can be happened and what do I have to expect in term of expenses?
Thanks
How did it end up that way, were you flashing something, did you drop it, water damage, etc??
Maybe power button has broke.
I'm having the same problem. My nexus one discharged its batt. wen i was on my way home.and when i plugged into charger and pressed the power, it doesn't switch on. i tried every way mentioned by other members.
had a short life huh...
try another fully charged nexus battery, if that doesn't work and your sure you did not damage it anyway it must be wear and tear of the power button/mechanism buy one of ebay for a few quid and put it in, only problem is, it might require soldering and thats a *****. lol
You can get the flex ribbon which contain the power button, no soldering required. Seen some on fleabay.
If it does not power on with the battery trick it is not the power button at fault. I can't recall exactly what the trick is because I never had to use it. It is something like pull the battery when the phone is plugged in and then put it back or something. Search the forum for how to do if. It should come up.

Simply I was using the device as navigator plugged in the car dock.
It became freezed, the only way was to remove the battery, then it restarted working only after many attempts.
The second time in the car dock as before was the last time I saw it alive...
Actually is in HTC to be rapaired... stay tuned...

Finally my Nexus One is back.
HTC replaced the motherboard (I got a new IMEI code in fact).
I want to thank officially HTC because they fixed the problem even if my warranty was already expired without charging anything.
I hope this can be useful for somebody, I've heard from another italian guy the same issue for example.
Thanks to everybody who partecipated to this discussion.

Nice that you got a good result and good to hear that HTC are still providing support if it all goes tits-up!
Hey Guys,
I apologise for the long Title but I coudlnt figure out a better way to to title the thread...
anyways I went to bed and plugged in my phone as per usual with an alarm set for 1230pm. come 1230pm, alarm goes off, i snooze it until 1pm. The next time it goes off, the alarm sounds for about a split second and then its off - I didnt turn it off.
So obviously i am a bit concerned since this has never happened before. I check the device and its off. Mind you this entire time the phone is plugged into the wallcharger from HTC.
I think its a random reboot (which i have never had before) and try to reboot the phone - nothing happens.
I try the hard reboot - nothing
The lights, both soft keys and LED for power will not even turn on or respond. Plugging it into a computer, it isnt recognized. Its as if the device is just dead. The power was at 100% too.
I would like to add that it is currently plugged in. I am hoping it simply, inexplicably lost power (happened on my Xperia T) and i have to give it some long-term juice. It does get a bit warm while plugged in right now.
it was running CM10.1 nightly 5-20.
does anyone have any insight or advice for this?

This is the 3rd incident that I know of a phone dieing. Mine was one, then there was another, and now you. All running CM 10.1. When Mine died I was transferring files via usb with the computer so I figured something fried in there (weird but the only explanation at the time). I came here for help too. That phone is long gone at this point. The thing is that I was told it's very very hard to brick a phone like that with S-on.
I don't know. I do love CM but i'll be waiting for a stable build before I go back again. GL to you. I had it it returned under the pretense that it was a hardware failure. The other guy who's phone also bricked said that there is some sort of issue with the batteries or something. I haven't confirmed that with anyone.

You can try to scan the cm 10.1 forum. they are pretty unforgiving if you brick your phone. Try to get a logcat to them so they can take a look at it (sarcasm). They completely ignored my post (I had the alpha when it crashed and burned). He the other guy also posted there and they did go back and forth for a few post, but they squashed it pretty quickly. I haven't checked any of the AOSP forums, so it may not be CM 10.1 at all. It could very well be hardware issues. Either way, with S-off its very hard to do something like this and I'm really more convinced its hardware. But unless it can be confirmed that AOSP didn't cause the issue, then i'll hang on to my doubts and wait for something more stable. I give maybe a month or 2.
---------- Post added at 04:59 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:56 PM ----------
custom kernals running sense based roms and a launcher should tide me over till then. With desense version coming out and s-off soon, it should make AOSP roms more solid.

Thanks, I am dead certain its hardware related myself. I am going to leave this plugged in, maybe it really needs to get properly charged (its happened to me with my old Xperia T where it went into deeeeeep sleep due to power loss), so i will be keeping it plugged in until Monday and then taking it Rogers, thankfully i bought a warranty for just this sort of crap happening.

yes, but a couple said they were on cm10.1 and the battery dropped fast and turned off. or had it plugged in overnight and woke up to the phone dead

people are thinking that its a built in safety against accidental button presses in a pocket or bag. i dont know if thats true but people have said it works

well when I had mine I tried leaving it plugged in for a day, but I didn't put it under bright light. I didn't notice a fast discharge with mine either. It was plugged into the usb port to my computer and I was transferring files. I could have missed it though, I mean I was around 90% at the time and wasn't too worried about the charge.

yep. not working...
I want to take it in to Rogers tomorrow see what they say.
My first one had the same problem I only had it for 6 days it was rooted and it wouldn't come on at all so I took it to at&t and they gave me a new one... Hope it doesn't happen again with this new one...

Any update on this ? The thread title explains my phone completely. It just simply died and won't accept a charge. 100 percent unresponsive in every aspect.

I'd try all the tips first. especially the bright light trick. Other than that it's off to your carrier or HTC for repair/exchange

OP here...
I have a new one in the mail for a swap...I have had no luck whatsoever with any tricks.
...and they sent me a device with a scratched up screen :/
does anyone know if a similar issue to mine was fixed? either on XDA or somewhere else? i really just want to get back to my own One
I had this happen to mine. No fix I've seen works, they just replaced mine with new one. If they sent you scratched replacement all I can say is complain and demand another one.

So you guys have cm10.1 installed when it happened? just want to confirm it occurs only with phones with cm10 installed, and not with Stock rooted sense! I don't want to end up like this, so I'll avoid cm roms for now, I'll stick with Sense only, and If the problem occured with Stock rooted sense, I will not even root my phone
Can you guys confirm this?
Thanks in advance,
cheers
