Can't run MetaMorph - Hero CDMA Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm trying to use MetaMorph to add the "rainy day" wallpaper to the lockscreen.
When I start it I get a message saying it needs to run some checks first. Then it tells me some files couldn't be extracted and set up and to make sure I have enough free space in /system.
How much space do I need to install it? I have about 30 megs of internal phone storage.
Sorry if I'm asking too many questions, I'm just trying to get the phone set up the way I want it.

Noobie needs help! (energy rom tweaks)

Hello, i'm a complete noob who received the phone 2 days ago. On the day that I picked up the phone, I immediately installed the energy rom 3.0 by following the simple instructions. Almost everything on the energy rom (updated 6/12) was perfect except...
I have a few inquiries before I mess with my fuze (or possibly brick it):
1) How do I add newly downloaded applications (games) from my computer to my phone?
-Do I just drag it and place it anywhere on my HTC drive? (btw, I don't have a storage card yet, should i drag future applications in there?)
ex. I downloaded a game application off some mobility site which had like 12 files... Idk if I am supposed to drag them and drop it off in my HTC flash drive or in a folder.
2) When I add the application/games, how do I access them?
-Are they automatically placed into the game folder in the start menu?
3) How do I add new tweaks to my phone? Specific tweaking applications like some landscape adjustment, or keyboard or theme.
-How do I use those tweaks? If I d/led the landscape tweak, what is the first step that I do?
-Do I also just drag into my HTC flash drive?
4) How can I make JUST the energy rom clock transparent, it covers my today screen picture and it's very annoying.
5) Is there an application to adjust the start menu items with the 4 columns on the energy rom.
6) The phone seems a bit sluggish when I try to unlock it or slide across, is there a way that I can increase the speed?
-installing a micro sd card? somehow fix the internal applications and stuff?
Thank you, and sorry for posting this uber noob thread, I just don't know where to start to look for specific threads to answer these questions.
Welcome to XDA!
The easiest way to install any type of application or software is to find it in .cab format, a cab will install and put all the files where they need to go on its own. All you have to do is sync your phone and drag the cab into your phones memory or better yet an SD card once you get one, then go into file explorer and click the cab, it will ask you where to install it (phone or SD) and presto you are good to go! Some cabs may prompt you to reset phone after install, its best to do so! If you installed Energy 3.0 then I assume you also Hard Spl'ed your phone. Once your phone is Hard Spl'ed you would be hard pressed to "Brick" it with an application and if you mess it up in some way or it stops working right check the Wiki on how to Hard reset and that will wipe it back to the way it was right after a fresh flash! If you have any other questions feel free to PM me and I will help you in any way I can!
thank you very much kind sir, i will figure out which cabs i need to download and then proceed until i have further trouble. thanks a lot for the cab info !

Getting rid of PKG's

I understand that the solution to this question may already exist in the forums, however, I did check high and low for it, and was unable to locate one.
Here goes:
I like (as I'm sure others do) to install apps2sd, something I'm able to do thanks to the actively-rooted and cyanogen-modded N1 that I use.
Unfortunately, the actual *install* files *themselves* from all Market-downloaded apps seem to remain in the phone's internal memory, clogging up preciously limited space. How do I get rid of these install files? I tried using a file manager to go into the mnt/asec directory to get rid of *.pkg's, but these seem to be uninstall-protected (I'm not even sure if I'm making a mistake from the get-go in trying to purge the *.pkg's), so I'm kind of back to the drawing board on this one.
Any help on this would be pretty invaluable folks.
Thanks,
Eli
If you've installed a lot, your dalvik cache will grow pretty big. That's found in /data/dalvik-cache.
Thanks Rusty - but my /data dir is completely empty (unless there are invisible folders; if there are, who you know how I can make them visible?).
Best,
Eli
You need SU access to view /data, make sure what you're using to browse it supports that.
Ahh, thanks Rusty - will do that
Your DATA folder is inaccessible, unless you use Root Explorer or other file explorer with root privileges (ES Explorer, for example - but it doesn't work with all ROMs).
There are no PKGs. There are APKs. And you're wrong in your assumption that they aren't used. This is no PC, this is Android, forget what you used to know, you need to learn again. APKs are the actual applications being ran, without them you can't execute anything, and using old Apps2SD, AKA Apps2EXT, you can move your /data/data to SD (EXT partition) and /data/dalvik-cache to /cache. CM doesn't support Apps2EXT, but it can be easily installed and used, following the guide in DarkTremor's thread. Read Wiki in my sig, it'll point you in the right direction. You can start by reading FAQ, question 9.

1) The .apk isn't the install file it _is_ the application. The are no "install only" parts to an android app
2) Anything on /mnt/asec is already on your sdcard using froyo-style a2sd
3) .so files in /data/data/xxx/lib and /data/dalvik-cache are the primary causes of full /data partitions

[Q] Move ringtones to internal memory

Hello, I would like to move my ringtones to the internal memory because I've noticed that since I started using Swap, It delays the ringtone from starting. This is what I observed, Randomly the ringtone starts after 2 or 3 vibrates, other times its not at all and uses the stock beeping ringtone (I guess since the SD is being used, it cant go in it and get the ringtone) So bottom line, My ringtones take a few seconds to ring after a few vibrates. I already know that I have to convert them to .ogg, but does anyone know another way to make the system pull up the ringtone faster?
I would like to know that myself. Im sick of having my default ringtone going when i selected a custom one for one of my contacts. whats the best settings for the ogg files too as this may be helpful to us both

Alright... So you wanna do this, here is what you will need:
*ADB Installed and working
*Root Manager of some sort
*Format Factory -This is freeware, so it's not warez.
1st, Download and install Format Factory. This is the program I use for everything. If you have one of your own preference, it can be substituded.
**Do a custom install, as this will try to install adbars otherwise. (You have been warned.)
2nd, Open Format Factory and click "All to OGG".
3rd, Select your ringtones and click "ok". On the next screen, click "Start"
4th, Open your Root Explorer program, I use Android Commander
5th, With your Root Explorer program, navigate to your newly created OGG files (normally found in Documents/FFOutput on your PC) in the Root Explorer.
6th, Move these files to /system/media/*** on your phone. And you are done.
Please note: ""***" represents the respective folders. i.e. "ringtones", "notifications", etc.
Hope this helped you. Click "thanks" if it did. - Any questions, ask.
EDIT: DO NOT change the OGG settings in Format Factory. They work fine at default. Once you get used to, and comfortable with doing this, then play with the settings to get your desired file size and quality.
I tried doing what you said, but although I successfully managed to push the files, they still don't appear in the ringtone/notifications menu

did you make sure the phone looked for new media, or restart ya phone? i had to do it with mine
I was going to say that I had checked the phone after restart and they still weren't showing up - but I double checked again and now they are. Thanks! I'm not sure how to check for new media, though - is there a procedure for this?
Been trying this using ES File Explorer but keeping getting a message that paste failed. Any ideas where i'm going wrong.
I have S-Off and root
you can try this, it a little easier if you have the tools but yoo have to reflash the rom so be sure to backup your apps, contacts blah blah blah...
1. unzip the 'rom.zip' file, open the folder and look for the system/media/audio folder
2. now you can add & remove ringtones, notifications, alarm sounds that you want or dont want...
3. zip the rom file back up
4. sign it with an auto sign program... (very simple to use)
5. flash rom and enjoy your customizations
6. restore your backed up contacts and apps...
(you can also remove some unwanted stock apps to save space, be sure not too remove system required apps though lol)
Cheers Idrifta, ended up getting it to work using Root Explorer.
o nice!!! haha good to know... better than my method lol
The following worked for me.. Check this
I followed a link and it worked for me on jfltetmo running on cm11-m9 and having twrp v2.8.4.0. I explained the steps in my answer here: How to install a ringtone into internal memory?. All the credit for the steps go to villo-2.

Rick#2's Overclocking of Droid 3

I found on another post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1341514
that the User: Rick#2 suggested using paid programs to which I've found free alternatives. I'd have posted as a direct reply there, but as "noob", I'm unable.
Anyways:
First thing that I noticed was this comment: "Unzip the attachment from the first post to the root of your sdcard, ie: don't unzip it into any folders after browsing to your phone on your PC, just put them in the root of the drive." <==Suggesting that users unzip and then stating to not unzip becomes a contradiction. I think what you meant to say was more along the lines of "Unzip the files directly into your SDCard, as there's no need to do it on you PC".
It would also be wise to state that some "NooB" users might not realize that there's more than one version of an SDCard for this phone, the Droid 3, available to be putting the files into. Standard transfer methods go to the EXTERNAL SDCard, not the internal one, so this alone could cause some users to fail at being able to do this procedure. Since this is likely the case to happen, a suggestion to verify that it's in the /sdcard and not the /external/sdcard might be of note, and those users reading this attempting this mod with the "no file in this area" problem simply need to use a file manager like File Expert (free) to do move the files from the External SDCard to the SDCard.
Next up, the apps needed to do this:
You suggested SetCPU (not free)
I suggest AnTuTu CPU Master Free
You suggest Root Explorer (not free)
I suggest Mount /system (rw / ro) (free, does the same thing, with a lot more ease than Root Explorer's way)
You suggested Better Terminal Emulator (not free)
Don't know the how much benefit of this might be over the free Terminal Emulator you thankfully suggested might be, but I can't imagine it'd be worth paying for.
Otherwise, I'd like to thank you for your post. Very nice work, and happy to say that I personally got mine to work without error the first time via your instructions.
There's a new method to overclock on rootzwiki I would suggest using. It uses a kernel module rather than a binary. Although it's in a boinic forum it is availabe for many other devices including the droid 3. It's not that difficult to accomplish and can also be done with free apps. Antutu will show the correct frequency and the min frequency does not have to be maxed out.
do you have to unzip via pc?
Do you have to unzip to sd via pc or can you just dl to your phone and unzip to sd is there a diff?

There's a few extra steps if you unzip on a pc, you have to push more, usually have to set permissions.
Honestly, if you wanted to tell this to Rick#2 you could have done it in a pm, there's no guarantee he'll even read this here...

Virgin Mobile Help

I have one of the Virgin Mobile models that has the smaller memory. I have been looking through these forums looking for a way to clear up the memory. It looks like there is simply not enough progress on this phone currently. What I would really like is a basic ROM replacement that does not have any of the HTC crap in it to make it leaner and use less space. Am I right that I need to wait for future developments? I just want to make sure I am not missing something. Is there any way to free up more space right now with existing hacks? I see lots of different posts in here, and when I think I am on to something, I read that it does not work on the Virgin Mobile phones, so I am getting confused. I was hoping somebody who knows my phone really well could hold my hand and tell me exactly what I can do to get some more free space. I am familiar with a lot of the tools, and have rooted and installed recovery on my Kindle Fire, and on my Ouya. I have rooted an old LG phone, but that was cake compared to what I am reading for this phone! Thank you!
Probably the best you can do for now would be to flash a write protection removed kernel, remove as much uneccessary HTC and carrier bloat as possible, and then use an app from the Play Store called System App Manager to turn most of the apps you install into system apps, thereby using unused space on /system instead of your internal storage. My advice is to make a TWRP backup before converting any apps, because some apps will not act right after being moved to /system, so just do a process of elimination/trial & error until you figure out which apps can be moved without causing problems. When you figure out which apps act up, restore your backup and re-do the process without converting the unruly apps.
You also might want to flash Raptor Rom, as it's probably the smallest rom available, leaving tbe most empty space for those apps you move. Someday we'll get a rom/kernel that will allow the moving of apps & thier data to an sd partition, till then this is probly your best bet.

Firstly, if you haven't done so already: Follow this
Then go grab the download from whatever kernel you want to use thread or grab RaptorROM here. RaptorROM already includes a version of @Pattyboi's kernel, but you can always flash the newer kernel (which he put up last night?) on top.
Drop whatever files you plan on flashing onto the phone, or the sdcard. Reboot into TWRP (volume down and power button when phone's off then select Recovery), tap install, find the .zip or .img to flash, tap, then Swipe to Install/Flash
