720p recording - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
i read with Froyo it is possible to record with 720p.
I tried but the highest i can choose from is "High (30 min)" which results in 720x480 which is not 1280x720
Is it true that i can record 720p with the Nexus One and Froyo.
If so, how do i?
Best

You read wrong.
It was possible to record 720p before Froyo came, with CM5.0.8.
Froyo broke the codec support, and charansingh_online is rebuilding it again. It'll probably take some time.

cm = cyagen mod?
means you have to root your phone (loose your warranty) to have 720p?

Yes and yes.

Actually it's yes and no, since you don't have to unlock the bootloader to be able to run custom roms now.

Its kinda over rated bro. It looks halfway decent but a little choppy.

Its like all N1 recordings, if you move to much the quality sucks.
But i think its okay, rated by videos on youtube.

Go to the Nexus One Developer's Forum, it's one of the stickies.

I think, hope, want to believe that 720P will be fixed for CM6-Final. I know @cyanogen and @charansingh have been working on it lately.

720p on Motorola Droid?

So I see all those lucky nexus 1 owners have a 720p video hack on their hands. Does anyone know if this is at all possible with a Motorola Droid? I know limitations are placed on devices and that a loophole was exploited on the nexus 1.....but has anyone looked into this on the MOTO Droid? That would be awesome if it was at all possible, but I won't hold my breath on this one. Wishful thinking though.

Don't know the cameras limitations. I'd settle for decent low-light response tho. Resolution is good enough for me.

Ditto. I'd be interested.
That Will be great but I dont think sensor is capable of 720p.codec support is there as shown by newly released motorola mile stone xt.
Why wouldnt HTC allow the nexus to record in 720p in the first place if it was possible? There must have been something wrong with allowing the 720p and there may be a negative effect attributed to it.

They noticed that market sales wouldn't be increased with it, people would already buy the N1, no matter HD or not. So I think they decided to disable the function so they could make some fancy ads emphasizing this new feature on a newer device.
Htc Don't have it at 720p because the higher the res the lower the fps (frames per seconds) and at 720p the nexus is only 20fps
i asked in the nexus thread the hack developer and he told me that its possible on droid / milestone hardware wise. but he dont have a droid for testing thats the problem.
Already been done!
sholes dot id dot au / how-to /#vid
I had this working on my milestone before 2.1 but I am sure the same process applies.
essentially you are chaging your build.prop to allow for 720x480 res.
Seemed to work when I tried it. But really, the standard res is good enough for me.

@sabaramo, How did you get 720p working on your milestone? Is there a guide or step by step process available anywhere?
Sent from my Droid using XDA App
He didnt. The droid supports that resolution natively. 720p is 1280x720.
720p is 1280x720...not 720x480, that is 480p. the 1st number is the pixel width, the 2nd is the pixel height of the frame. I would assume a more friendly 16x9 resolution in the 960x540 range would be a good compromise...but if the sensor can handle a full 1280x720, more power to it.....
but why not 854x480? the pixel size of the actual screen? I'm running some ripped DVDs at that aspect and they look brilliant...
see, 720p IS 1280x720....i don't lie, lol.
sorry didn't see your post before i sent this....

You have full resolution on your Droid/Milestone?
How did you go about doing it? I would love to be able to get mine like that.
I'm totally new to Android Modding and Deving. From what I've read though, I wanna Root my Droid, and get that ROM with the Sense UI that's on the first page of this forum. And now I want full resolution on it, too
I would like to get this functionality as well, will the OTA update for froyo mess the bootloader up so that rooting is not possible on a phone that is not rooted?

Dunno, but there are several releases of both FRG01B and FRG22 out there with root. Why wait for OTA?

Is 720p video possible?

With a bunch of new phones with 5 megapixel cameras coming out, that can also take 720p video. I was wondering if it would be possible for our hero to take 720p video?
Please do tell what other phones are coming out with 720p video recording other then the nexus? which does keep in mind have a snapdragon processor which is definitely better then ours!

Not by much though.
You know, I honestly don't know if ours could or not. I mean they both are 5MP. The only thing I can think of would be a driver that is needed to support 720p.

those cameras that can reach 720p are qdsp6 cameras. ours are qdsp5. The highest i think we can get would probably be 480p, which i almost have working on my aosp rom. just need to do some more kernel hacking to actually get it to record properly (turns into a green jumbled mess when replaying it)

pretty much every android phone to come out after ours has that capability
So is this something that is coming up?

dammit haha. We missed it But anyway, I've been thinking, and now that you're hacking the hell out of the Hero and giving it all new features, there is really no reason to upgrade now when my contract is up. I'm just going to stick with my Hero until it breaks.

New android user... got a few questions.

Hello there...
I just bought an Incredible S.... coming from jailbroken iPhone4....
I simply got tired of waiting for unlocks and jailbreak releases and crashing of jailbroken iphones... lol
Anyway, i just realised how far android os has improved from a few years back... so i thought i'd give it a shot.
So I have s-off and rooted my htc.... and installed Android Revolution HD 1.1.1... so far so good... except for two issues I'm having...
1. the battery does not seem to last very long... at least the first half from 100%-50%... is this normal? On the iPhone 4 battery life seemed pretty good and consistent from 100% to 0%... I noticed there are lots of things running in the background that you kill and it comes back...
2. it does not seem to be able to play iphone 4 recorded videos which are 720p .mov files, i believe they are H264. I have tried just about every player out there... while videos from front camera (VGA) plays fine... the back one HD is choppy and slow... Is this a hardware limitation? It seems that it uses software decoding for those files. I'm gonna try some MVK HD movies and see... Maybe I should have gotten a tegra2 based android? If only motorola unlocked the Atrix already... or at least realeased gingerbread already... I know it's unofficially unlocked now though....
issue one does not bother me much... since we can get extra batteries.... lol....
thanks for reading, any input is appreciated.

1. Read this thread regarding battery life but in the end everyone's experience is different. Installed apps are different so you have to locate the battery drainer for your phone.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1136372
2. Not sure about the IP4 HD video files. But you might have to transcode it to best view in your phone smoothly. I believe 720p playback is pretty much the limit of IS. And smooth playback sometimes require matched codec. Our IS might not like the codec used in IP4. Even h.264 has various different profiles.
The previous post suggested a good answer for first question.
And for the playback of IP4 files try out yx player. It pretty much supports a lot.

also it depends on what class of SD card you have, because if you only have a class 2 (2mb/s) and your video is recorded at 6mb/s it will be choppy

if you can plug it into your pc you can use this program

also could you try the various programs suggest and post back if they work? also if possible try and play a 480p file ? it could be that the hardware isnt capable with playing the hd video ?

yxplayer looks pretty good, but for 720p it seems to play in slow motion too like in mobo player. 480p are fine.
I'd say incredible is just not capable of doing it.
Maybe i'll switch to atrix when better custom roms become available... lol....
oh so you have to test the microsd on the PC? well, when i was transfering stuff onto it from my laptop reader I was seeing 10MB/s +, pretty decent.
Although higher the class doesn't necessarily mean better performance. Or that's what I've been seeing. [shrugz]
And I too came from an iPhone, love the change...
Hope you're enjoying your IS as we all are!

Video Recording etc,

Hey guys, been watching a few videos on the Nexus 4 now and one thing that has really impressed me so far is the video recording, and more specifically the microphone when recording.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7IZIG-YnLhE
Just thought I'd shove this video here, im sure some of you have seen it already but is it just me or is the microphone really clear?
Im currently using the iPhone 4s and the microphone isn't as good as this. The video is a little shaky but I'm sure if mounted on a tri-pod (with an adapter of course) it should work fine.
Edit, then again, this video says otherwise.. http://youtu.be/M4CbYXKxj6I
The microphone is average, but the frame rate overwhelms it on the negative side.
Can anyone mod a 30fps video or is the problem of 22fps , in the sensor itself ?
The sensor IS capable of 30fps (even more). Software isn't taking full advantage of the sensor. Maybe on a more recent build the problem is already fixed, but no one on more recent builds posted an unedited video
Wat sensor does it have?

I take my Atrix 2 as a benchmark, and since it's a phone from end-2011, for progress' sake, the N4 should beat it hands down.
Sound-wise, the Atrix 2 does near camcorder-quality and beats the N4 by a long shot: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ii2Q7FJ5bA
Image-wise, the N4 looks good. Remember that youtube videos are often compressed badly and stutter on their own. It is sharp and there's plenty of details, judging from the op's second link, but the framerate is poor. My Atrix2's recording frame rate is always 30 fps, and image quality is just a tad worse.
So may I ask google, is it that difficult to do, with top-notch hardware, what motorola did 1 year ago with now-outdated chips?
Doesn't youtube cap videos at 30fps?

Nope, It reinterprets higher framerates into 30frames, unless the slowmotion effect is going to be employed, in which case it keeps the extra frames. What looks to be the problem is the recording refresh rate. The output of the codec file is always going to be a standard (24/30 in NTSC, 25 in PAL), whether or not there are actual frames there, is determined by the refresh rate.
My point is that youtube isn't going to reinterpret the video and change the framerate.
What is wrong with the FPS?
This phone just gets worse :\
Im more interested in the mic. In some videos its decent, others its terrible?
The video looks fine, stop complaining. Do I have to go on about the price like everyone does?
This is going to be a hard week, I have to use an iPhone, sold my SGS2 ):

No, it doesn't.
You can go on about the price, but you'll still be wrong, since other devices at a lot of pricing ranges are able to maintain 30fps video recording.
And since not everyone is able to buy from the Google Market (there's a thing called "rest of the world"), and price outside is REALLY higher, you'll be double wrong.
As said a lot around, seems to be a software bug, making the camera module basically "take a lot of photos" instead of "making a video". The camera itself IS able to do [email protected] and [email protected] The S4 processor and 2GB of RAM are more than capable of dealing with the support necessary.
Google/LG are likely to NOT fix it, but I hope someday the community here manages to.
Is it recorded in 1080p? If so I think it will look smooth in 720p.

Bet you lots of money that it's fixed on launch day - producing 30FPS videos like a champ. NO ONE SEEMS TO HAVE A FINAL VERSION OF THE SOFTWARE. And judging by the performance increase within the last few days on at least one N4 device, I'm going take an educated guess and say that Google are releasing software updates once every 2 or 3 days before the launch and my honest opinion is that Google are impairing things on purpose so that no one from the company runs off with a device and chucks it on eBay for quad profit.

An amazing idea for an xposed module (in my opinion)

Hello everyone, today i had an idea for a xposed module, that would be very helpful for people that have phones without a native HD resolution, like me (800x480).
So here is the deal: i thought of a module that could emulate an HD resolution on the YouTube app, therefore, allowing people to watch videos with quality above their native resolution. I need that because i think 480p on my phone (that is HUGE) looks awful, maybe because the screen ia huge, i dunno...
If it's possible to do so, or if anyone has the skills to do such a needed module please do!!
And thank you.
Greetings
Rusty
It won't be useful. You have a 480p screen. Watching a 720p video on a 480p screen is just wasting your bandwidth.

Yeah, it will be useful, for one simple reason, 480p on a screen this size looks just horrible, and no its not wasting my bandwidth, because with 480p on my phone on YouTube, my phone buffers a 40min video in like 5-10sec. So 720p on my phone's screen will make a big quality difference (will be more pleasing to the eyes) and it won't matter on my bandwidth.

Less packet loss, therefore more quality. I can easily notice some packet/frame loss by quality decreases along the reproduction of the video, particularly in some more "fast paced" videos i watch, mainly in drift videos and rocket league videos, that are uploaded at 1080p 60fps.

Solution: update your device to a newer device with a higher resolution
It is not possible to make a display with a given resolution to show stuff with a higher resolution.
Basics: the screen's resolution is determined by its pixel, which means that there is a maximum resolution available for a given device. A higher resolution will be downscaled or pixel will be merged as not all provided pixels can be shown on that display. Simple as that.
Such a module already exists. It's called YourTube. Just search for it in the installer or on the website.
