local network operator but indicate roaming? - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am using a local network operator, but my N1 show a "R" on the signal symbol to indicate roaming. Is it a known problem? Is it normal?

You have this operator's SIM card installed? In that case, you should address the operator's user support. It shouldn't happen (other than if you mix the icons in the framework-res).

Some operators roam even at home without extra expenses. One such example is 3.dk, which allows free roaming on the TDC network, and also in 3.se's network. Roaming on TDC brings up the roaming symbol, not sure about 3.se.

I am using 3 too, I am living in Macau, it seems it is the problem of 3, may be I need to contact 3 user support. thanks a lot.

Network Operator connection

I own a t-mobile version of the nexus one. I can connect fine to their network with no problem, however i do find myself in a complete t-mobile dead zone sometimes. When im at that location other people with AT&T devices have pretty good service. I noticed that in the Wireless & Network settings -> Mobile Networks -> Network Operators, it does find AT&T on there. However, when trying to connect to it, it gives the following error:
"Your SIM card does not allow a connection to this network"
At that location, i was also with someone who had t-mobile with a Motorola Cliq, who was able to access this AT&T network without a problem (although it was a G connection)
Is there something i can do to access this network with my phone and sim card?
Maybe some sort of sim unlock code i need to get from t-mobile?
same here/..
actually.. im having that problem right now! O.O;
I have full bars yet i can't send txt msgs or call anyone.. and when i try to turn on wifi it says updating wifi then turns off... wtf?
anyone have any ideas?
Are you on a pre-paid account? Sometimes the pre-paid accounts do not support roaming (even though you aren't paying roaming on a contact account).
Also; it depends on the freq of that network. Ummm; if the phone is unlocked or not.
There could be a number of issues. You could try and call T-Mobile and ask them. But it just could be that it's At&t and that specific area might not be roaming enabled.
Just my 2-cents.

Check your logic. I'm sure that roaming would be enable in big NYC. WE are in two different areas also. Plus I am on postpaid. Also the phone is QUAD band, it does not need 3G to roam on AT&T EDGE network...come on now.
I ended up contacting google phone support about this. The tech i spoke to on the line was able to recreate the issue.
When he contacted t-mobile support for us t-mobile said basically if they own the property rights for the area you're in (disregarding your signal strength) you are unable to connect to any other network. If you are outside of a t-mobile coverage area, you are then able to roam.

[Q] Roaming?

How is roaming detected by the phone? In particular I'm interested in distinguishing between national and international network roaming, as unfortunately (but as expected) my operator gives me a roaming icon and I'd rather not have nasty surprises when near the border if I can fix it cleanly.

Phone Shows Roaming Sign When Abroad using a Local SIM

I've recently shifted to another country,
Used my o2 SIM for a day or two and obviously phone showed as Roaming, with the little "R"..
I've now bought a local SIM card and installed and running on a local Provider, yet the phone still shows as Roaming and Data does not work unless I allow Data connection while roaming...
Is this a bug or something?
I should state I've been in a different country recently and also used a local SIM from there and I never had this issue at all... I saw the local provider when using their SIM, Now, I use a local SIM and this still shows an "R" on my signal.. Same with my girlfriends phone...
Any ideas?
Edit: I'm on a N/W unlocked phone..

In my country there were 2 networks, and when a third network started it's business, it was using the infrastructure of one of the existing networks. The phones that were using Sim cards of the third network, all showed that they were in roaming, and if they wanted to use data, they needed to enable "data while roaming" options. Of course, they were never billed for roaming charges. Now this third network has it's own infrastructure, and the roaming sign is a thing of the past.
Maybe this is the case with you too.
I would try to contact the local network provider, to seek the answer you are looking for.

I get this in Thailand because my provider has different names/IDs for the 3G and 2G networks.
The 3G is called "True-H" and the 2G "True Move", or something like that.
The SIM will automatically register on both networks, but if it connects to the 2G network I get the roaming symbol.
The solution is either to enable roaming data (I don't get charged any extra, but need to remember to disable it if I travel), or set my movie network to WCDMA only. This way it won't connect to the 2G network.

Check if you got roaming allowed and switch it of.
Register if needed handset on your network manually.
You might not have the network where you are due to availability area coverage.
Check your apn settings, if they are on the mobile network you need and settings are correct. Perhaps from website provider, or helpdesk you can request them to send settings.
Go to settings, more, mobile networks and check there. Just explore a bit.

Cheers for the replies,
I'd already checked those areas out, APN is correct, Settings from Provider received and installed, Manually selected provider from the Network list...
Still showing 'R' - AS has been said 0 I'll just have to enable Data when Roaming and turn it off when I travel..
which service provider do you use and phone model do you use?
this phenomenon normally happen in new telco on some phone model

Freedompop won't show network connection in notification bar.

So I'm using this phone with Freedompop's global SIM card as a handy data connection device. I've been using this sim with other phones without a problem, however I have a strange behavior on the Blu R1. Apparently, since the card is always considered "roaming" here in the US, the R1 just shows me a "R" next to my signal bars. However, I am unable to see if I have a network connection, or at what level (3G, H+, etc). I set the network preferences to always connect when roaming, but I hate being in the dark with my connection.
I can pull up a browser and see if it works or not, or open up the Network app or something to see the nitty-gritty status, but its very frustrating to not know how or even IF I'm connected when I'm expecting a message or response. For example, if I'm on H+ I'll accept a video call, but if I'm on 3G I know it'll just end in frustration. Is there any fix/tweak or anything to get around this? Perhaps disable the roaming notification?
I'm not having quite the same problem with FreedomPop. I see the perpetual R for roaming, but I do get bars for network signal strength. (You do have the FreedomPop Sim in slot #1, right? It won't work in Slot #2.)
FreedomPop will ALWAYS show as roaming here in the US. It is part of their instructions actually. But you will not be charged extra for it. I have had the free 200mb, 500 text, 200 minute plan on my sons R1 HD for a few months now and no bills.
If you have Xposed installed, you could use the Roaming Control module to trick your phone into thinking that AT&T and T-mobile aren't roaming networks; it's what I did until I switched to the FreedomPop LTE GSM sims.
Otherwise, I used to use Network Cell Info Lite, where I enabled the notification and set the update rate to 4 seconds--HSPA+ will show up as "3.5G" in the notification icon. It has proper support for dual-sim phones. You could also try Nify, which does show what kind of network connection you're on, but I have no idea if it works with dual-sim phones properly (e.g. will it only show SIM1 all the time, even if you use SIM2 as your primary sim?)

my device always thinks i'm roaming

i have the korean N950N and i live in Israel.
the phone always gives me problems thinking it's roaming. thinking it's "home" is korea.
what can i do to get rid of all these problems?
for example, it treats my regual service provider as a roaming network. i can't control the choice of networks. if it connects to other networks in my country it gives me problems and limitations, this shouldn't happen because my service provider is actually virtual and relies on other service providers and i am always allegedly "roaming". only in this device i get problems...
what should i do?
