Finally a trackball wake up for Froyo 2.2 - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

All you guys coming from an iphone or blackberry can finally get the phone woke up by clicking the trackball. No more fumbling around with a case on the N1 trying to look for the wake up button. Go to the Market and look for Widgetlocker. It costs a a dollar and well worth the convenience. There's a ton of features and from testing doesn't seem to impact battery usage. Small footprint in memory and the only app I could find that did what I needed: Wakeup the phone when clicking on the trackball

Where have you been?

what is this a Widgetlocker hustle???

Guys, come on. We all can't read every single forum post or download every single app in the market. Not everybody is running a custom rom. I had a hard time looking for this type of program and nobody bothered to post a solution only a stupid comment. Forums are for helping people not insulting them. If this helps some people then it was worth the post.

If you had asked here, we would have hooked you up straight away... You must take it as a bit of fun. To us it looks funny because trackball wake has been around for ages. We didn't mean no harm, just a little fun...
Come to any of the forums here with questions and we are more than happy to help you out, but to start a thread about how this is a 2.2 thing is funny to us. As we have been using track wake since 2.1.
If you have anymore questions, jump on to a ROM post in the dev section, and ask away
Good luck fella,

There's an app called No Lock. Which wakes and unlocks your phone with volume buttons and trackball.
Oh and it's free.

Thanks, dude. I'm not rooted and have no desire to root, so this is useful information. When you press the track ball, does it take you to the lock screen or does pressing also unlock the phone. I would frankly prefer it be the former like on the iphone.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't No Lock completely unlock the phone when you press the trackball, volume buttons, etc.? I would prefer that pressing take you to the lock screen.

On widgetlocker it takes you to the lock screen, upon clicking the trackball. No lock which I've also tried skips the lock screen. Like I said earlier, I'm rooted but not running a custom rom (which has the trackball wakeup built in) which is why this app does the job exactly as described.

agree 100%
so there IS a trackball wake avail for non-rooted 2.2 users.
Is the no lock (free) working for froyo 2.2?

it's possible to root your phone, without unlocking the bootloader. i did it for a while, then decided to go ahead and unlock. (shrug) i bought it, it's mine. ;-)
soooooo, on to kangorama (cyanogen bits with lots of wonderfulness from other devs) and it has a 'cyanogen settings' that allows to unlock (as in, wake) the phone compeltely with the trackball. then go on with trackball notification colors, dark title bar, hide title bar, etc and you've got a really nice phone.
(shug again) i like it purdy alright.

some of us don't want to root the phone though, hearing of other issues (and possible future issues) in regard to the choice to root.
froyo 2.2 is just fine for my purposes.

I'm not seeing a feature offering wake with trackball or vol buttons with no lock (free). No settings for it other than unlock on or off.

Turn OFF the phone using the trackball
What about an app which also turns off the phone via the trackball?
(due to power button dysfunction)

I guess turning it off via the trackball could cause some confusion, i.e some of us use the trackball to select stuff instead of tapping.
Anyway one alternate option is to use 'screenoff'. It only cost a buck on the market. I bought it cos HTC is being anal in my country to those with unlocked bootloaders.
More info on it here
http://android.konreu.com/applications/screen-off/

If you already got WidgetLocker for your Trackball wakeup "needs" you could always launch it and have it set to a low timeout period, say 15s. Then you'd launch it and it'd then turn off in 15s. I think it'll go as low as 10.

Is there any app\hack that will leave the keyboard backlight on?

Or at the very least extend it? It is definitely a top 10 pet peeve of mine with my G1. The few seconds that the keyboard is on is just too damn short.
Thanks.
PS- Yes I did search. Found nothing useful in the results.
hrm
Most people want it off
Power Manager used to do this, but it doesn't anymore. I'm with you, it's almost impossible to use the keyboard in dim/no light with the short illumination it gives.
Well here is the source to the DarkKeys hack
Im sure you could easily reverse the code to make them stay on instead of off
Or you could ask the dev to add it as an option they might be willing to

I'm not most people. And I doubt most people are touch typists, because that is what you have to be if you want to use the G1 in the dark after the backlight has gone out. Sure I could roll the trackball. Which moves the focus on the field and then I need to change that focus again which highlights everything so then I need to deselect everything and I can get back to typing.
Thanks but no. 5 seconds before the backlight is out is too damn short. And I can guarantee you that the light they are using is LED based. You might get 5 minutes of extra battery life by turning it off. Maybe.
Someone made an app to turn it off... Backlight off I think. If you contact them and get the source code for it from them, then it wouldn't be very hard to find someone to modify it to do what you want...

I posted the source to the code 2 posts up
Dark Keys 2.0 aparently let you turn backlight on or off, haven't tried it yet gonna find it now...

Obviously, you don't get the point.... Or, were you just making a smart remark?
I tried Dark Keys - but, with 1.6 it just force closes every few seconds. I would try to mess with the code... But, I'm not experienced enough for serious dev work and I dang sure wouldn't know how to alter the compatibility from an earlier, say 1.1 release, to work on the newer 1.6 release.
If anyone could help with this I'm sure some users would appreciate it. I know I would. I would like the option for to turn the kb light on when it was opened and off when it was closed.
it would probably require a service to run, which would slow down the phone. i just move thr trackball to turn the lights back on...

I don't think (although, I am probably wrong) that Android uses services like Windows. It seems to me that opening the kb would start prompt an intent to turn on the backlight and closing it would turn it off. I don't know that it would cause any more memory/resources in Android to run.
Has anyone found a solution to this problem yet? I don't have many complaints about the G1, but the keyboard backlight issue is definitely one of them...

waking up with the tracking ball ?

in the cyanogen mod 5.0.6 there was an update that enabled the option to wake the phone and unlock the screen with the tracking ball
does anyone know about an update for FroYO ?
I'm going to quote my friend from an earlier post. Hopefully this helps you out.

Zero complaints here. It's solid and I am getting good battery life. If you want trackball wake, you can add the Market app "No lock". The display will sleep but will wake on any hardware button push - vol up/down/trackball. No unlock required.

Thank you for your help
but this is not what i'm looking for. it's not the same idea.
you should be able to keep the phone locked and allow the tracking ball to wake the screen and only then another press will unlock the phone (or not if you don't want it to - you can disable unlocking)

Sorry about that. I hope you find what your looking for.
there is app called lockbot pro. it is in market even trial version. i use it now but it is not great. it doesn't work on 100%. it should show you unlock option but not work well.
hope soon someone come with app for trackball wake up . very need it for n1.
There is one. Cyn roms have it. Just no Froyo yet.
I'm using Screen Suite Lock Screen until there's a mod for Froyo to wake up the phone with the trackball on the stock lock screen.
With this you can wake up the phone with the volume keys as well, which is not ultimate, but you still have to slide the locker to unlock your phone.

it doesn't lock screen almost at all. 90% of time it just screen goes black and tracking ball wake it up but it doesn't lock . so basically it works like no lock screen app
I believe the Froyo source has to be released for this to be done, which it currently isn't. Until then, lock screen replacements have to be utilized as an alternative.

Lockscreen - seems pointless on NC

I can see some point to a lockscreen on a phone - which is so highly personal and has so many hardware buttons.
But it seems pointless on a tablet, and I am surprised to see that none of the customizations disable the lockscreen - I would have thought that all of the custom Nook setups would do so.
It seems a huge waste of time to do that swipe so many times - hundreds, eventually thousands of times in one's life - for no reason. And people are so impatient - I am surprised that they have patience for the lockscreen.
Am I missing something?
Or do most NC users already have an Android phone, so they are used to a lockscreen?
You took more time writing that than all swipes of your life combined

Lol true that.
Really, its such a minor nuisance I don't even notice it. You do raise a good point, though: these things aren't really in situations where the screen might get unlocked w/o noticing. We definitely can't "butt-dial" anyone lol.
I like the HC lock, I play with it for a bit before I unlock it.. lol
Check out myLock in the market, it gets rid of the lock screen automatically. I've used it on my droid forever now, and works perfectly on my nook too.
It does seem rather pointless now that I think about it. Not like it's going to get touched in your pocket or something.
I disabled my lock screen with No Lock.
i just went into setting and turned it off. is this not an option with your rom?
currently running cm7 build 18
Lock Screen on Nook Color
Lock Screen Pointless? How about someone stealing your Nook and downloading a boatload of books? I used the PIN lock on my autonootered Nook. Now with HC, I've got the pattern lock with my owner info right there on the screen. Unless it ends up in the hands of another developer with a bootable SD card, I'll expect to get a call.
I've unlocked hundreds of times having never thought of how pointless it was... My whole life has been in vain.... /emo

IF you are unlocking via PIN for security, sure, that has a point. Most people aren't. The standard swipe unlock is pointless on the NC.

Can you give the exact menu ?
Settings -> ? -> ?
I guess to prevent accidental 'touches' on touch pads??
How much time would you waste fixing settings or items that were moved from say a kid or cat playing with it.

I expect the first thing most kids would play with would be the unlock button, since it's the only thing on the lock screen that moves.
As to a cat messing with your settings, I think the complexity of Android may be a bit over their heads. If this was iOS, then maybe that would be more of a concern.

Touchscreen slowness

Ok so i am trying to determine what my problem is.. here are the symptoms. When i try and end a call i sometimes have to press multiple times or deliberately press and hold the end button and sometimes it doesn't respond pretty much at all. Also i am using go launcher and when i press icons that are in the dock bar they have the same issues. I also have similar issues when i text it's really annoying so is anyone else have similar issues?
Sent from my VS910 4G using XDA App
Same here. I've noticed that to hang up it takes a deliberate double tap. Also, the screen will sometimes become inoperable requiring a reboot. This has happened three times since first getting it. One note if that out happened twice stock, and once with decrapped 1.1
Any body else seen this?
Sent from my VS910 4G using XDA Premium App
I haven't seen it anywhere else, but I have seen the double tap on the end button to end a call. Seems to happen frequently. A "feature?"
Either way, it's annoying.
Running Go Launcher as well.
To me, it seems like it takes the screen a really long time to wake up from being off, in all cases - for example, dial voicemail and put the phone to your ear. When you get the prompt to put in your PIN, take it away and the screen comes on, try to punch the dialpad button immediately and it just won't work. I tried it as I was writing this and had to triple tap the button.
Same thing with the lockscreen (still on the stock lockscreen for now). The screen will wake up and it takes a second or two to even start to register finger swipes. It's really annoying...
Speaking of phone lockup, I received a call a few days ago and the phone froze - I couldn't answer the call, or do anything, all the while the phone just kept ringing. Had to pull the battery. I'm still on the stock ROM.
Me too! I had a call and it froze. Battery pull as well. Also, forgot to mention I am using open home launcher.

Yep it's a bug either in LG's function to turn on and off the screen in Android, or the kernel drivers that enable/disable the touchscreen. There is about a 1 second delay to it.
I discovered this lovely bug while porting the AOSP lockscreen mod.
I'll run some more tests to see whether it's an android bug or a kernel bug. I'm betting it's android (something like the screen being turned on before the touch controller has had time to reinitialize itself, or something more complicated like a race condition of some kind...)
Either way, with cm7 around the corner, I don't think it's that big of a bug

[Q] How to disable auto-screen off?

Forgive me if this was answered somewhere else, but I have not been able to find any information anywhere. I am not sure if my search terms are weak or what.
Okay, here is my question. How do I disable the auto-screen off feature? Meaning, when I hold the One in my hand and flick my wrist downward, the screen turns off by itself. I have looked into every setting on the phone but can not find any switch for it.
I am running OneDriod rom (cyanogenMod). I am unsure if the rom is causing this, as I remember it doing the same thing with stock.
Again, if this was answered elsewhere, feel free to delete/lock this thread. I was hesitant to even create this thread.

Thanks for the reply. I will be honest and say I have no idea if that is what it is. I have seen no reference to it on my phone or in any settings, etc. Though it seems my phone only turns off when I flick my wrist (or any other slight jerking action). However, it does not wake the phone up with a flick, it just turns the screen off. It is super annoying and I can not find the switch to turn it off.
