Nexus one browser problem: uPortal Error. Only affecting Nexus Ones. - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

On the Nexus One, when I go to my university's website (pipeline.wayne.edu), and enter in my credentials, I get an error which says:
uPortal Error
Sorry, but uPortal encountered and error that is preventing it from rendering. The error must be corrected by system administrators. Try again later.
I looked this problem up but it seems not many people have come across a website which gives them this error, so no solutions have been found.
But most troubling of all is that all of the discussions and threads I found on this seem to show that the people who had access to other phones (G1, MyTouch, iPhone), were able to access the websites without problems that were giving them the uPortal error on the Nexus One.
I don't think google is going to even bother looking into this problem, so I'm hoping that a dev can figure out what the issue is. Anybody find any solutions to this or encounter this problem?

I'm gonna take a wild guess and say you haven't contacted your universities' system administrator.
Do that first.

You're missing the point here. The university and Google themselves aren't going to worry about 1 or 2 people out of 40000 who can't access the website on their smartphone. They're going to say "So what's the problem?....oh, you're trying to access our website on your phone?? well, just try it on a computer." And that would be the end of that, it wouldn't solve anything.
The point is that the G1, MyTouch, the iPhone even can open pages that give the Nexus One this error.

The point is that your university knows what configuration your phone needs to be in for it to work with it's own network.
(I couldn't get on my school's network because I had neglected to set up a specific setting)
You school's tech support is there for a reason. Believe it or not these cool little smartphone devices are really common, and your school has staff to deal with these things.

Good luck, I've been complaining about this for months. Nobody cares. And yea the nexus is the only phone with the problem so google should address it. If a website works on my old ass g1 it damn sure ought to work on my nexus. I'm not interested in contacting my schools support, I shouldn't have to. The answer to problems with phones should only rarely be "fix it your self" but around here that's like the only acceptable answer. I love android but its ok for consumers to demand things. That's just the seller/consumer dynamic. Its not a bad thing.

Why are you people afraid to get in touch with IT?

Well firstly no need to say "you people" you racist (kidding). But I took your advice and contacted my school's IT department. They could care less if it's not on a Windows or Mac computer. So yeah...exactly what I predicted.
So we need a fix on the phone itself.

is there any website i can surf to right now to see the problem on my nexus one ?

The only website I know of is my university's website, on the page that is supposed to load after you log in. So I can't tell you any that will reproduce the problem. But if you look up "nexus one uportal", on google (without the quotes), you'll come up with a few results, and the people who are talking about it are usually trying to log into a website...and also they're having no problem doing it with other phones.

I'm reading through alot of the google searches and this apears, to me, to be an issue with webkit browser more than anything. You may see a surge in response soon as alot of phones are moving to 2.2 and newer webkits.
i found this entry pretty funny:
If I try to log into our portal from a phone running Android 2.1 or 2.2, I get an error:
uPortal Error
Sorry, but uPortal encountered an error that is preventing it from rendering. The error must be corrected by system administrators. Try again later
Being the portal administrator, I've tried contacting myself to correct it, but I'm stumped. A friend with version 1.6 of Android on his phone has no problem. I've tried switching the user agent, tried from a real phone and from the Android SDK's emulator, but no dice.
Sungard Support was kind enough to open a defect 1-COTA77 for me, but let me know not to expect much because it's not a supported browser.
Anyone have any ideas about what's causing the problem and what to do to fix it?

Just wanted to bump this in case someone has found a solution or has the knowledge to fix it.

This may seem obvious, but I can't see it mentioned. Have you tried any other browsers, such as Dolphin?

Yes, and skyfire. It doesn't work.

Hey, new to the forums here, but I've been having this problem for quite some time and it is quite annoying. I've found it works on Opera Mini, but no other browser. I've also been following this problem on Google's Nexus One forum. I hope Google will fix this issue because I really dislike using Opera!
-DUD

Opera Mini won't work on a lot of sites.
I've found a temporary solution.
Fennec will open my school website which was giving me the uPortal error. So I hope this helps others.

Giving Fennec a try. Didn't realize how gigantic the file size is. I still don't feel like it is as smooth as the stock browser. Sticking with the normal browser for everything but the website.

Fennec was a nasty alpha that barely worked. There is a Firefox 4.0b1 out today for Android. It's still pretty massive but it's better than the Fennec build was.

Luckily I'm using apps2ext so low space isn't a worry for me. But even though I hate Firefox for android, I'm so glad its able to open the sites with the u portal error.

Doesn't work on Droid or the Nexus S for that matter lol. Something to do with 2.1+ browsers?
On the plus side, Firefox has gotten smaller, and I have more memory onthis one lol

people of XDAdevForum!
please answer one simple question? aren't You all trying to act more dramatic than there is actually necessary?
please correct me if I am wrong, but is there a majority of You regular gamers?
come on. let's be honest. this device is great. a real power house. period.
complaining about video? coreplayer is about to release special qtv version of their player ANY MINUTE now...
complaining about camera? nothing can be done. hardware is limited and camera is just an additional option anyway.
3D gaming? ... ... dunno what to say. real game loving freaks owns psp from day one. (or since last sale...)
wait till cp for kaiser, opera mobile 9 and windows mobile 6.1 will be released. then we will talk.
this device main purpose is communication and nothing can beat it at it.
to clarify- I am not a HTC agent or whatever.
I'm just simply getting tired of overreacting and all the hate against HTC. I never heard of people talking about taking a dump on nokia's lawn cuz of crappy gps in N95.
don't get me wrong- I would be over the moon with drivers sorted, but please... give those guys a break. they actually never reffered to kaiser as a gaming device like nokia does on it's n series. I've bought my Vario III because it is succesor to my previous Vario II. gps integrated, 3meg cam (not that bad in day light and soft from polaris) tilting keyboard and the list goes on...
Yes. I am happy.
... and I love this community, who once again is showing, that wm is great sys after all and it can be customised, just how we like it.
sorry for that wall of txt, but I had it comming.

Go and try to scroll in your windows folder with file explorer. Or use TomTom to show you the navigated route. Enjoy.
To be honest, it's not about gaming at all. Not about video playing at all. It's about scrolling in IE, in file explorer, smooth display in TomTom, in Camera. These operation on older devices are much more smoother comparing to this brick. Havent you seen the videos? Dear HTC agent?
The point is, that our devices seriously underperform compared to older device due to a lack of drivers (!). This means we've been sold devices that look as if they'd outperform older devices from the spec, but don't when it comes to reality - and it's not because the hardware is not there or anything, it's merely because a driver has not been delivered.
That's like you buy a cool computer advertised with a state-of-the-art DX10 Graphicscard which is deactivated due to a lack of drivers and all the rendering is done by the crappy onboard chip. Wouldn't like it would you?*
* Analogy is somwhat impaired as you can always just get drivers for the Card, but still....
Come on
I dont like paying $500 for a Tilt when the 8525 for half that works much better!! Get a clue!
Probably his first device. Doesn't know what to expect.
That said though I'm sure in a moment he'll reply & we'll learn that he is the mastermind behind windows mobile.
I would say something but I will respect the Title of this thread.

Now I'm begining to wonder what's going on here!!!!!!!
I have no scrolling issues in windows, or viewing route in Tomtom.
I also have very few videos that don't play snoothly either.
SO and this may be an important observation. Is there a proportion of devices out there that are not working properly (possible ROM or other software setup - maybe even a hardware problem) and that others DO NOT show these problems.
On mine I simply cannot see the slowness others report. Mine is lag free and resposive. I saw some posts about the screen rotate times being slow, but mine is virtually instant.
Maybe this is what we should establish. Is it only some devices that are having problems.Compared to my 8525 my speeds are fantastic.
I notice that this odd mixture of some folks saying they have excellent speed and smooth loading and performance compared to others who seem to find the opposite - is apparent on several other PDA sites too.
Mike
EDIT: Just saw the post below. Again I have not noticed the camera being slow (except when really dark). Taking videos I dont do much of but let's say compared to TyTn it is about the same.
I will say I had a slow scroll in PIE but that was solved with the installation of the older PIE dll.
Happy? No!
I don't watch movies or play graphics intensive games. However I do use my phone as a PDA and take pictures and small videos and suck. Try scrolling anything, try taking a picture or small video of your kids. Then come back and tell me how happy you are.
Seems that either you don't actually have a Kaiser or you only use it as a phone.
Lately the camera performance on the Kaiser is really frustrating. It's almost unusable in low'ish light. With video or stills. Sure it's been like this the whole time but lately I've really been frustrated. I would like to use the camera.
To all the people who say a camera on a phone is not important I say go back in your cave. It's 2008 BTW and technology is surpassing you, get out of the way.
Sorry I'm done. Let's not trash this thread since it's call "Happy User Thread". There are alot of other threads we can do that in. As much as it's going to urk us to know that non power users will be posting in this thread oblivious to what is possible.

For all I know it may be 80% of users who have these problems. I don't in any major way or anything that by changing settings has not been fixed. I'm not trying to dismiss the issues you and possibly many others have, but it may have a bearing on the causes. Perhaps there are hardware flaws for which no amount of ROM changing will solve matters.

Is there some sort of benchmark that we could all run to see if there is something that is only affecting certain units?
I bought my TYTN II in Australia about 3 months ago and the screen redraws are abysmal, the camera is useless in anything less than perfect light. From what I have read every TYTN II is the same, depending on what your expectation is I suppose.

Me too Mike, my experience seems to follow yours. I love my little Kaiser, its a great little device, does all I ask of it, and I'm really pleased with the over all package.
And before others jump in and propose I'm a novice too, my first PDA phone was a Nokia 9000 Communicator, bought years ago. Back then, mods weren't flashing ROM's, or installing CAB's, it was done through programming, and DOS (remember that?) level commands. Or to put it another way, imagine that every tweak etc on the Kaiser had to be done via regedit. So novice, no. Happy user, yes.
I wonder if there are just some units out there that are badly made? Maybe HTC has more 'Friday' phones than most...
c'mon now, what are you talking about The tilt is about a half a step backwards from the 8525. Do the comparisons yourself, from playing movie files, video recording, picture taking in limited lighting, and the graphical redrawing of the ui itself! there's no way in hell should my ipaq Hw6515 out perform the tilt in any of these aspects! The tilt is suppose to be an upgrade from the 8525, but from the performance of it, it's not!

Android Market Questions/Issues/Comments

market...not working for me.
Initially, I downloaded and installed pacman and shop savvy. After the upgrade came through which put me at RC28, the market doesn't seem to work properly. When I click on the app I want, it looks as if the download is happening, but when I check download notifications, it says download unsuccessful. I've tried this on several apps...all have failed.
Heads Up - Market
In case you haven't looked lately, there are a dozen or so new apps today
and still nothing worth downloading
I second that. I am about to put the g1 up until something worth a sh*t comes out. But that's just me.
when did u get the update and did u have a choice to update or did it do it automatically,i'm just curious cuz i haven't got it yet
Did you try the download with 3G on??
If not, try it with 3G
We needed a new thread for this info?
The following morning after I got the phone.....there was a window after the unlock sequence. There did not appear to be an option, it just executed the update. I've tried both wifi and 3g....both don't work.
I noticed that I am having issues with some applications in the market. They will fail... I kept redownloading them till they finally came thru.
I haven't got the update yet. I think this is just because the market is getting soo many new applications and such it probably is having hard times with it all.

I read by Nov. 2nd it getting out there, hang in there.
As long as the software states that its a trial in the listing I dont have a problem with it. Someone will write a free version at some point. I would want to be paid for my work too
Most of the apps aren't trials, and the ones that I've seen that are thus far are clearly marked.
I don't mind, since it's not some large majority of applications that are timebombed or limited trials. You would expect some people to not want to give away their stuff, and there's not a huge flow of apps just yet.
Like all open source, I'm very enthusiastic to see what the market produces in the free category - I'm sure it's going to be impressive.
I don't know if the location of were I am located in the US but the I downloaded the widely talked about SHOPSAVVY application and doesn't seem to work well. Sure its free but it doesn't give me the nearest stores and only one or two online suggestions. WEAK SAUCE in my oppinion. I also saw and downloaded (by accident) trialware which I too believe should be in a different catagory. There were not a big selection of apps that were worth my time. Dissappointed

This is ridiculous and I dont know who to contact to fix this. All these (****ty) apps are popping up in the app store as free, but really are trials, or even ADVERTISEMENTS for the actual product you must buy. I hope who ever is running the app store fixes this. Im disappointed because they said the apps would be free until next year but developers are making their own way around this rule to charge users for their ****ty apps.
This is one of the reasons i miss my windows mobile phone so much, because of all the excellent developers who created software for free, and diddnt try to make a pretty penny.

Its BETA so developers are going to put out BETA apps for people to test then they will charge for the final product. If you don't want to pay for apps then don't. Stop *****ing the damn phone/OS just came out. There will be free apps eventually, you can't even compare to Windows(WHICH HAS BEEN OUT FOR A LOT LONGER).
I understand your anger. Trial versions in my world ARE NOT FREEWARES! It's called SHAREWARE and are completely another kind ob beast. I'm REALLY PICKY at what I'm adding to our directory of free Android software and there is no chance for a trial, shareware or a demo to get inside. I'm myself sick of all these "smart promotion strategies" by developers and I hope Googlers at Android Market will sort this out soon (but I fear they won't interfere too much). Let's see!

Minor Annoyance

I recently upgraded to Froyo. So far everything has been great. I have come across a small issue though and was wondering if I'm just over looking the fix. On 2.1 when I composed a new text message the contacts would only display mobile numbers. Now with 2.2 I see all their available numbers. If I'm not paying close attention I'll end up sending a text to someone's home phone and never get a response. Anyone know of a fix to this? Hopefully its just something small I'm overlooking.
Bump. Still have hope.
That's funny cause this was an enormous complainmt by so many people on 2.1. Google fixed it it seems finally. Guess you can't please everyone!

People were complaining that you couldn't compose texts to home phones? I just don't have any use for texting anything other than another mobile.
i much preferred only having mobile numbers come up, seems far more practical but i may be overlooking a use for sending texts to office, home and other land lines... and if the majority prefers it this way then i certainly cant argue with that. Plus ill get used to it it just takes a little longer for each text so not a huge deal, definitely only a "minor annoyance", an annoyance nonetheless

Pretty much sums up my thoughts on the situation. I had just hoped there was a setting or something I was overlooking. Thanks for the replies.
I guess this is good news for people that don't have very organized contacts (like me) where I have a mobile number listed as work/home/etc. I'm pretty sure this has always been an option in handcent though, which in my opinion is far superior to the built in app.

I know right? Haha
-If ignorance is bliss why aren't you smiling?-
really guys? to answer the question: apparently it is rooted and using universal anroot? it also runs the archos OS? this is what ive gathered so far...
not much info yet...
Before being rude, maybe some folks should take their own advice and 'google it' to see if there is actually any useful information available.
All I've found after weeks of extensive searching (and I even used a few sources other than the great god google, imagine that!) is that (a) it can be rooted with newer versions of 'universal androot' and (b) someone has suggested that it may be similar enough to one version of the Archos tablet to use that firmware although no one has reported that they've tried and succeeded, and (c) much unverified talk that the hardware isn't sufficient to run anything better than 1.5,
Also interesting and somewhat funny is that if you check the nextbook's website in the download section with Firefox you see only see a couple of software package upgrades, but check it with Internet Explorer and you get more info to the effect that upgrades are "Coming Soon!!!". "Soon' in this case being at least >= about 4 weeks.
An update to even Android 1.6 would be a big help. Unfortunately, with my very limited knowledge of Android/tablets/etc. I'm not ready to try it myself without reports of success from others. It's too useful as is to turn into a brick since there is a lot of software that does work on it (you just have to invest the time to look and try a lot of it to find the right stuff). You might even want to try 'google' to find slightly older (but working) versions of some apps.
Cheers, and good luck!

Simply, Lol
I just bought this device for $89 from Big Lots and I have been googling for the past hour. There's not much about this tablet or any of of the Nextbook products. For that reason also it's probably going back next week. My box says it comes with 2.1 so I assume there is at least an upgrade available from the site. I'd love to be able to reflash this and de-ebook it and have a general android tablet to self customize. It's got a dual core 600mhz.
Chances are if you can't find the info by a quick Google search then you are s**t outta luck. XDA isn't a place where you can magically find the solution to every tech issue you will ever encounter.
One rule of thumb i have when buying a device is whether it is popular enough to have good support from the dev community. If you buy without checking first it becomes a crap-shoot. If you owned a HD2 you would be in luck...but some random device, what are the odds?
Everything has a shelf-life and even the more popular devices will stop being supported eventually. Rather than adapting the device to suit your needs, why not adapt your needs to suit the device? It doesn't need to be running the latest and greatest software to be functional after all. People have converted old Win 98 PC's to be media servers, hardware firewalls, etc.
i also got one from biglots, and for $89 it does e-books, mp3 and video, web browsing with wifi and i can take my sd card out of my camera on vacation and view my photos and upload to facebook.
what more can you ask for for the price? it would be nice to root it and have a working .apk of market to install on it though
Nextbook 2 root and Market
I've been able to root my Nextbook 2 using freeware tools: Z4Root and Universal Androot. Even though I tried to make it permanent, it seems to revert to a non-rooted state when rebooted.
I'm still working on getting Google Market and other Google apps working. I'll post when I do.
For me, even just having a tablet with a web browser and book reader is worth the price. I used to try reading books and browsing the web on my Android phone, but the screen is just too small.

I also bought from BigLots. I would be happy to learn how you used the freeware tools that you mentioned. Like others, I have searched for many days but can not find out even how to root it temporarily, let alone flash a new ROM. the tools seem to be out there, but how do you put them on the device?
Button combinations at power-on? Put the software on SD? I have done this with other devices, but they tell you how to go into recovery mode.
did a search and found NEXT2 Rom =)

is this not what you are looking for? I am wanting to buy the same thing, but know nothing about rooting a device so I came here looking for information. The above link is what I came across. Please respond if this is what works for the next2. Thanks!
Like others, I got one from Big Lots. $89! Oh, and it has android 2.1 on it!. I had also found the previously mentioned thread before this one. It has 86 pages of posts and most are NOT about the next2 (next3 and a few nearly identical devices with other names). Most of the ROMs posted there are for those other devices with a larger screen and therefore not useable on the next2. It does have some info on how to modify those for use with the next2.
Unfortunately, I haven't been able to identify exactly what is in the rom on page one of that thread. If anyone does load it, please id the os version, if it is fully rooted, and if it has the market app in it please. Probably a good thing to load if you have android 1.5 on your next2.
Oh, I haven't read even a third of the posts, but when I read more, if I find something useful, I will report back here.
Oh, and twitch351, if you don't want to help someone because you don't think they have put in time already, researching it, why don't you just ignore them rather than being a butthead about it? I HAVE been doing the research, and you were wasting my time too.

Copilot on amazon

What happened to it in the app store? I saw it on there one day with two bad reviews and now it's gone. Do they take reviews seriously or possibly a fix was needed?

Reguardless of what they say, it WILL NOT work on your G-Tab. I'm in the process of working with their customer support over the issue it requires a IMEI number on your tablet (wich the G-tab does not have). Save your money!!!
I've actually tried it on several of the roms here and none of them seem to work with it. I'll update everyone when and IF they get this resolved for me.
I bought the USA only version from the market and it wouldn't download the maps. I emailed support and they sent me a link to the 1.13Gb file. Took 5.5 hours to download. It is working great for me, though. I'm on Vegan 5.1.1. They send the actual key a few days later. That activates it. When you first buy it I think it is only good for 15 days, until activated.
Working great on my gtab. Using the newest version from the market place.
I guess it's a hit or miss. I purchased the US version from the app store and it will not go past the check for an IMEI number. Their customer support has proven useless as they first told me they had escallated my problem to their engineering dept. and now I see they have marked my problem as SOLVED with no communcaiton to me at all.
copilot runs great on my GTab. I started with an older version and upgraded, so maybe thats the difference, but it runs no problems. I know me saying that doesn't help at all, in fact its probably a bit of salt in the wound as it were, but it may help to know it is possible.

Glad it runs for you... actually, you've been a LOT more help than their tech support. They keep saying, uninstall the program, delete the copilot folder on the sdcard and then reinstall. Same results everytime.

I was wondering if you could post your DeviceInfo.xml file from the \copilot\save folder? Their tech support keeps asking me for mine and I've sent it to them twice. I'd like to compare mine to yours to see where they are differnt. Or, if you'd rather not post it, could you look at it and see what it has for the Isphone and IMEI settings (<Isphone> and <IMEI>)? I'd really appreciate it.

Have they not given you a license key? While I bought my CO-Pilot a long time ago, from the website, and not the market, I understood that even market purchases resulted in a license key being e-mailed to you??
Once you have that key, you can use the .504 version.

Here is the discussion I've had with them concerning the product key:
Me:
Here is an update. I was able to get a previous version of the software. It is version 8.2.0.504. It installed fine and got past the IMEI error. Howerver, it is asking for a product number and I cannot find any reference to a product number on my receipt from the app market. Can you tell me where to find this? I'll be happy to use this earlier version if we can make it work.
CS:
Unfortunately, since you were never able to activate the device we never issued you a product key. And I can not give you one cause you purchased it through the Android Marketplace. I am very sorry.
Me:
When can I expect to hear of a solution to fix the copy I did buy then? I really want the software but if you cannot get it to work on my device, what are my options? Is there a way to purchase this outside of the app market so that I can get a working product id code?
CS:
You can purchase the $19.99 Northa America version from our webstore but I would hate for you to buy that and still have the same problems. We will get back to you as soon as we can about this issue. We appreciate your patience.
Little do they know that my patience is wearing thin!!!!

I am guessing from their reply, that the activation process is what generates the key?
Here is an idea. Do you have access to another Android device (phone?) that you can install/activate the app on? If that generates your key, you can then de-activate that device (important step!) and then run .504 on the tablet.
While I did not do this intentionally, that's basically how it worked for me.
I purchased Co-Pilot 8 in late 2009 I think (maybe 2010), from their web-site for Windows Mobile. I later ditched WinMo for the Droid X. I de-activated my WinMoDevice, installed the Co-pilot app on my DX and activated it there.
Later, when I got the Tablet, I de-activated the DX license, and setup on the G-Tab.
Other than the most recent versions giving me IMEI errors, I've not had any trouble installing with my key.

Yes, I guess you have to actually activate the software on your tablet before you get your Product ID. So, I'm in that Catch 22 loop. Unfortunately I don't have an android phone. Windows Phone 7 here. I guess I'll wait to see if they can get me an answer. I'm planning on picking up a Transformer as soon as they come back in stock so maybe it will work on it.
