Is there a way to root the Droid on Froyo, like using sbf or something?
So far from what I see, if your on 2.2 ota. Not as of yet. That should been a risk you considered and researched before upgrading to 2.2. Give it a little time though sure something will come up. Not totally sure on this just did some searching and didn't see a 2.2 root process yet, hope I'm wrong for your sake though.

Wait a minute, Droid Mod is gone?
Found Easy Root, go to this URL and get it for $0.99 (to 4.99 lol): http://www.unstableapps.com/
As far as i know, you should be able to sbf back down to 2.0.1, root, install clockwork recovery, and flash the pre-rooted 2.2 on rom manager.
i successfully loaded bugless beast v.4 after manually upgrading to the FRG01b.
Here is what i did. i followed the linux instructions.
i cant post the link in this forum since i am still a new user, but it is from androidforums
Do yourself a favor. Download SBF and Rd Life to flash to original 2.0.1. They root like post above said. If you are not use to flash the original SBF is a must. Makes it impossible to brick the Droid 1. I used it to recover mine before going to the Droid X.

Thanks for the help, but I already found Easy Root, I have a mac which would make it almost impossible to use SBF, I should have mentioned that.
EasyRoot worked for me
I just got the 2.2 OTA from verizon and EasyRoot worked for me like a charm.
Is there some place else to get easyroot? It has been taking down from the app market. Thanks

Free Alternative
You can also get Universal Androot from androidsuperuser.com.
It works about the same way as Easy Root but is free.

I have a Motorola Droid1 that I haven't rooted but would to get some gingerbread action. Is anyone working on a working rom? Or is there a rom I just couldn't find? I know the Droid Eris has one so I figured the Droid would be able to handle it. Links would be great!

Check CM7 alpha build for droid!
Yeah for DROID not for Milestone
i think i saw a gingerbread rom somewhere in the motorola development area, and i think its stock, so no CM mods unfortunately, but might be more stable than the alpha
There are two unstable builds getting some attention. They're quite unfinished, and most people probably wouldn't want to use them as their production ROM.
ROMs that have a Gingerbread look to them (such as CM and BB) for the Droid are still based on 2.2.1 (Froyo) with custom themes.
Is there different versions of the update.zip for superuser permission? I'm asking because rooted 2 captivates and the icon looked like a skull and crossbones. I was attempting to put a custom rom on one of them so i flashed back to eclair. After rooting again, the icon is a little black ninja guy that ive never seen before. Thanks for any help, this is my first attempt at flashing a custom rom other than the froyo kb1 rom through mini kies
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
The superuser permissions app with the ninja is an older, outdated version while the superuser app with the skull and crossbones is more updated. You can delete the older version with root explorer and then install superuser by ChainsDD from the market if you would like (or you could flash it from cwm if you put it onto your phone from the computer)
I get the android with cross bones with any custom ROM I flash. But, the update.zip I have kept from months ago is the Ninja. I'm guessing the early versions are the ninja, and the older versions the cross bones. Right now my superuser version is 2.3.6.1. What version is the ninja?
Sent from my Captivate running FireFly
why not use superoneclick instead of the update.zip??
Thanks for the help guys! I can't find the version number on this ninja.... I'll just try to get a more updated superuser. Thanks again

Do you have root access? If so does it really matter what the icon is?

This is why I still have the update.zip for the ninja, just in case. Root is root, other than the aesthetics of the actual root request popup and icon I didn't notice any difference in the different superuser versions.

Yes I did have root access with the ninja, I just want to double check with someone because I was getting ready to flash my first custom rom. I ended up starting over and rooted with super 1click. That gave me the cross bones... I flashed serendipity 6.4 with no problems. Thanks for all the responses!!
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
im not positive but im pretty sure update.zips are just a little outdated and will only work for the initial root of a 2.1 stock rom anything else pretty much comes pre rooted. also if you are super worried about the "ninja icon" just go into the market and update Super User
i just got this captivate and it's a new build 1108(07.12.2011)i guess. i have been reading for hours and hours on several forums, about how to root and update my phone from 2.2 to 2.3 and use the xda lagfix. my moto droid 1 is rooted and running ss/cm's latest 2.3.4 and it smokes the pants off of this samsung. i am finding several step by steps for 2.1 to 2.2 and so on, but nothing for 2.2 to 2.3 that actually works for me. wondering if my phone is too new. i dont nesc need to root, but really want 2.3 and or xda lagfix. or do i need to root??? can someone please help me? i would give you my moto droid 1 hacked and smokin fast for a succesful updating of this slow as can be captivate. i'll even pay for shipping etc. LOL!!!
Find the odin one click thread, do that, you'll be back to 2.1, then find a thread explaining how to root, then follow the directions on how to flash gb. Pretty easy if you look around a bit and read up. If my phone wasn't about to die I would find the right links for you, but it shouldn't be too hard, there are plenty of guides on here

I'm pretty sure you can just go from stock Froyo to 2.3 with a one-click package from DesignGears.

Will these same instructions work for a rooted 2.2 Captivate? Is there any (easy) way to save my app settings? (I've spent a lot of time getting 3 stars on all the angry bird levels!)

I have been off the captivate for a while now, so there are much easier ways to get to gingerbread than when I was still on it. However, if you backup your apps with titanium backup, you should be able to do the following: once you install your new rom, run the "restore missing apps" function, and it should keep your progress in games without messing up your rom. The problems people run into us when they run the "restore all apps" process, which restores system apps and screws things up. If you only restore missing apps, you'll be fine
The edit is because I'm drunk right now. If you backup your apps on your current rooted setup with titanium backup, you should be able to just restore missing apps with titanium backup once you flash the new rom without any troubles and have your saved game data.

Read, read, read. And read some more.
You will need to upgrade your bootloaders, and upgrade your ROM/Radio/Kernel.
This all carries with it a fair bit of risk. I would suggest you understand how to recover from a "soft brick" before attempting to re-flash or upgrade anything.
Also: This is in the wrong section, and if I'm honest, this isn't much of a first post if you're new to XDA.
THANX everyone. esp. *toy028*
read till my eyes bled... and
1-superoneclick to root
2-odin 1.7 to flash latest speedmod kernel
3-after headaches got cm7 rom to flash and now i'm stuck with it as it puts it's own kernel(clockworkmod4+) on the phone and it will not let me flash anymore update.zips
dont understand the edify request it gives. cant find an edify option in the rom. afraid to reroot, reflash speedmod and try again because it(the new kernel) doesnt seem to be compatible or want to let me upgrade LOL. so i am trying to get cm7 to please me.
wish there was a simplystunning rom. tried andromeda3 and it wouldnt flash for me. cm7 is very lacking. got gapps but it's still VERY lacking. quadrant got slower on video but faster on cpu??? wierd. neocore got slower too. only went from 55.7 to 52.3 but still. only one keyboard on cm7. no super customization like i"m used to with ss. i really miss forcing my browser to pc mode for streaming southpark etc. debug option doesnt have a desktop selection bummed but gonna try and deal with it.
thanx again
Andromeda3 wouldn't flash because of the version of cwm you are on. Andromeda3 is 2.2 and requires an older version of cwm

When you figure it all out, use Apex rom. It's up to date and works great for someone who is green.
I'll second the call for Apex. I've tried several of the available Gingerbread ROMs, but always ended up going back to Apex. Installed the recent 9.2 update and won't be looking back.

Guys/Gals! be careful when recommending JF6 Odin1 Click, he stated his release number on his phone being 1108, and if I'm not mistaken, he will brick his device based on that build number. OP do a search for Odin 1 click and make sure you can use the JF6 version
thanx for the warning. i was actually aware of such a conundrum being possible and thought i would try it anyways. there seems to be a lot of mis-information or better yet only partial instruction from those who assume eveyone knows all of the things to do before the instructions they DO give. at any rate, one click worked for root. everything is groovy BUT i still cant use any other rom but MIUI's latest. which is sooooo lacking it makes me sick and i go back to cm7 everytime. oh well. at least i can get 2370 on quadrant with cm7 and 57.7 on neocore instead of 1300 and 23.5 respectively. my moto droid one does 1700 and 23.7 so i figured the captivate would smoke it. now it finally does. it matters to me when using google earth and maps etc. those apps suck up the cpu/gpu ram and anything else they can. so i guess i'm happy with cm7.
I want to hook up my cousins d3
I'm a frequent on the Epic 4g boards and I've been with android since htc hero so its not new to me and I read up on the d3, however coming from a galaxy s to droid is a lot different than I thougt lol
So my question is how can I root the droid 3 and then flash a rom? What rom do you recommend? Isn't the droid 3 bootloader locked? What's a softloader? What's this CWM bootloader business?
Its so different than a galaxy s! Lol! All help will be appreciated. And sorry for this thread....as a fellow xda'er I know how annoying thesethreads are...but samsung babied me with the gs everything was simpler lol

All you gotta do is hook the Droid 3 up to the computer, install the drivers, download the root program and let it do it's thing. Then you gotta install a version of Clockwork, either Safestrap or Bootstrap depending on the ROM. As far as picking a ROM right now except for Liberty most of them are just basically Verizon ROM based without the junk and are excellent ROMs. Liberty I am not sure but I think combines a few things from the Verizon ROM and a few AOSP features. That is the procedure in a nutshell anyway.
Sent from my DROID3 using XDA App
in addition to what he said, yes the bootloader is locked. the clockwork mod is a hijack to allow you to boot into recovery. the safestrap is a 2nd system that runs from the preinstall partition, leaving your default partition intact. CM7 still has some bugs in it. im running MonsterRom but Steel Droid, Dark Droid, are also good BLUR roms (as in motorola blur parts). Liberty has AOSP and blur but i havent tested that out.
Hey guys havent been on xda in a while. Got very busy and so on /so forth. Just wondering what major things have been accomplished in the last 6 months or so. You dont have to go crazy with your responses im just curious. Im on 5.6.890 verizon XT862. Runnin the liberty 3 still lol. What roms are new/better. Whats new and improved/ what do you reccommend? Thanks for your responses in advance!

Or
Cm9 for ics
Thank you

Actually MavRom 4.5 has overclocking and is much more stable than Eclipse IMO. You could try that or even stick with Liberty (which was great for me) and just find the opptimizer flashable zip on Google for the Droid 3 and learn how to use that and use Busybox installer to run a script as root.
As far as what's new, Hash is trying to get kexec (load a second kernel after the first one boots on top of it) to make a ROM that is sweet but it's taking a while.
