Common issue.
1)Pull the battery, disconnect the cable.
2)Put back the battery.. Phone should appear to be off still
3) Hold down the home and volume down button. Once those are held down, also hold down the power
4) The phone should be download mode.
5)Odin, plug in USB cable after opening odin, repartition and format (no debug), rezap the firmware, and have a feeling of relief sweep by as though you survived death.
Remember, some newer firmwares need the 512pit, NOT 513pit. But that is basically an error screen which is telling you I assume that the Boot records are messed up/inaccessible.
Hi !
Thank you for the help!
I got it into download mode. i then tried running odin with that tar file again but from a different pc. and it finished just fine and restartet.
And now i have a lag free phone
Again thank you! i thougt i had fried it

Well this is a Video Tutorial teaching those who are new to modding there phones or have been reluctant to try Odin, or for those who NEED to use Odin since they soft bricked there phones or flashed something wrong. For whatever reason, this will teach you how to get your phone into download mode and how to flash your Vibrant back to original stock state.

one upped me huh?
my next post - will include a video on how to take over the world! MUUUUHAAHAHA
I Kid, but good job, maybe my inbox will slow down now.
Your last link is down. Thanks for the video, I am about to use Odin for the first time and this video has helped give me some confidence.
Thanks
is this in the sticky yet? it has 2 be its helpful to the noobs
Not to be a buzz kill or anything, because this was needed... And is very useful, but why isn't it posted in general and just linked in the bible?
This isn't about development.. Its a tutorial about a windows program..
It would get just as many views through there and be just as helpful and not clutter the dev forum..

I have only used Odin 1 time to flash JI2, have been very lucky not to soft brick with all the times i have flashed my vibrant. But I wish this was around before I had to use it, thanks for the video. Its not hard to use, but visually watching it always makes me feel better before I do anything for the first time.
Thank you sir
This is exactly what i was looking for.
I agree. If the mod could bump it that would be great. I plan on coming out with more videos in the future.
anyone have recommendations on how to do this if you dont have access to a windows computer?
oh geeez. just be thankful
Terriffic!
Thank you! Much mopre comforatble doing ot for the first time!
It does not work with me. I do everything right and all it shows is:
<ID:0/004> Added!!
<ID:0/004> Odin v.3 engine (ID:4)..
<ID:0/004> File analysis..
Nothing more.
Do I need to have my sim card inside the phone or it does not matter?
Hmm, not sure what the problem is, could be a few things. Are you sure you have the correct PIT file? Make sure what you have downloaded is not corrupted at all. You can also try using a different usb port.
Very nice video .... I am a noob and this helped me a lot....
Thanks guys
Maybe the reason is because of the downgrade mode. Should I see something when the phone is in this mode because when I hold the vol up and power it just show the samsung logo nothing more.
I just followed all of these directions to the T and everything went fine, no errors in Odin or anything, and now my phone is stuck with a black screen and the buttons lit up. When I reboot the phone it goes through all of the startup screens just fine: Vibrant, T-Mobile w/ sound, and Galaxy S, then just blank screen.
I tried doing the Odin thing a few times and I'm stuck here - is my phone seriously bricked?
EDIT: I can reboot into Clockwork and stock recovery just fine.
Current Settings - I am rooted, I have ROM Manager, Super User Permissions, Root Explorer and a Custom Rom (Fusion).
Attempts - I have downloaded ODIN, install all the necessary drivers, have booted up Parallels and have have been able to mount my phone and view files on Parallels. I have opened up ODIN and it has recognized my phone when it is ON.
Dilemma - I have gone through the steps given to us by the nice ODIN video tutorial. However, once I access download mode on my phone my Parallels gives me a pop up that says it is unable to connect the device to the USB. I have tried this over and over about 30x, still I cannot get it to recognize the phone while in download mode.
*So, can someone provide me with a solution? Either via MAC or Parallels? I'd like to get my phone back original settings soon, thanks.
Probably a noob question but you can flash any rom with this program?

If it is an Odin ROM then yes, not the update.zip types.
Well, I guess I messed my SGS up.
A short overview of what happened:
I tried to replace framework-res.apk on the official Froyo (rooted using OneClickRoot method) with one I modified. After deleting the original file I was unable to move the new one into its place as, despite me deleting a few ringtones, it kept stating that not enough space was available. So I decided to go into recovery mode, hoping I'd be able to fix this (I had a backup of the file on /sdcard/) I wanted via adb's shell from there. Well, su doesn't work in recovery mode ("Permission denied") and neither does adb remount ("remount failed: No such file or directory").
This is where the real trouble starts:
When I launch Odin3 (1.30), the phone seems to be recognised - if a yellow field with a COM port listed and "<ID:0/009> Added!!" in the message area is any indication. After selecting my PIT and PDA file and clicking Start, this is what Odin tells me:
<ID:0/009> Odin v.3 engine (ID:9)..
<ID:0/009> File analysis..
<ID:0/009> SetupConnection..
Aaaand that's it. I have tried both with the 512 and 803 PIT and even tried flashing JPK onto it to no avail, it just stays stuck at SetupConnection.
I also wiped everything on the phone as well just to make sure nothing is interfering. Thanks to me messing with the framework-res.apk, adb can't be used while the phone is "running" Android (with a black screen and I suppose constant FC everywhere because of the vibrations).
I'm pretty much out of ideas right now after having tried for hours to revive my baby, but maybe one of you magicians out there can help me find something I haven't thought of yet?
Remove the battery and put i back.
Go to download mode.
Try again.
Sometimes you need to reinstall the drivers.
If you have more usb stuff locked up. Remove them. Odin is a little baby

Hello... just got a Galaxy S new and I think I have fully bricked it.
It was on 2.2 stock and I installed Darkys v10.1 extreme rom on it following the steps in this guide..
http://www.darkyrom.com/community/i...-darkyrom-gingerbread-jvh-noob-friendly.3080/
I first installed
- Ficeto_JVH_I9000_Odin:
- DarkyROM_v10.1:
and installed the PIT and PDA.
I decided that I didn't like Darkys and tried to install Cyanogenmod 7 on it..
my friend said I needed to install a PIT first, then install a JPY rom afterwards.
I used Odin 1.3 and selected this pit "s1_odin_20100512"
and I think I pressed Re-Partition as previously in the guide that was what they did..
Auto reboot and F. Reset time were both ticked
This was the log
<ID:0/003> File analysis..
<ID:0/003> SetupConnection..
<ID:0/003> Initialzation..
<ID:0/003> Set PIT file..
<ID:0/003> DO NOT TURN OFF TARGET!!

<ID:0/003> Firmware update start..
<ID:0/003> Removed!!
<ID:0/003> Completed..
<OSM> All threads completed. (succeed 1 / failed 0)
How can I save my new baby?!!!
When I mean bricked, I don't think it turns on at all...... doesn't light up or enter recovery.
Most ironic is, I bricked it relatively easily when people said it's virtually unbrickable.
!!!!!!!!
You may never flash just a pit file!!!
You only use it when you flash a 3file rom.
That's the same for repartition.
If you can get it in download mode, everything is fine.
Else your screwed...
A sgs is virtually unbrickable if you had flashed it correctly.
When you don't know how to flash always follow a tut!!!

I never realised you could just use a .pit without the rest.
The .pit file isn't "installed" it is a file which tells the system how to wipe and then repartition the memory in your phone. Essentially you wiped the phone without installing anything on it after that. I am not sure if it wipes the bootloaders as well (at the very least it has partially wiped them if recovery is not working)
If you can get download mode to work, then you should be alright. If it doesn't work, a jig may or may not help. If you can not get download mode to work, then you have no other recourse than to send it back for repairs. They will need to replace the erased bootloaders if this is the case.
If on the other hand you do manage to get it to work, read very carefully the process that is actually involved in flashing firmwares with odin/heimdall. Yes it is very hard to permanently brick your phone if you know what you are doing. Hell in most cases even if you don't know what you're doing it's hard to permanently brick your phone. You went ahead and did one of the few things that is a danger area though. In general though, you should not repartition (ie use the .pit file) unless necessary (although repartitioning wont really do anything bad it's completely unneeded in most cases) and don't flash boot-loaders unless necessary. NEVER repartition without flashing a rom with it.

Thanks for your long and detailed explanation of what I have exactly done..
I had kind of guessed by now of what I have done.. which is very unfortunate as like you said, "I never realised you could just use a .pit without the rest. ".
Such a dangerous thing, I wouldn't have expected the software to allow me to do that
Instead of making a jig with resistors, I have read that you can cut a micro usb cable instead??
Would you be able to direct me to other resources or information on how to make one?
If a jig doesn't work, how much money am I looking at for someone to fix it?
Thank you very much,
Kind regards

USB JIG may be your only hope then.
but before you do that, take battery out for 5 mins. Then hold the 3 button combo for DOWNLOAD mode, THEN put the battery back in, STILL holding the 3 button combo.
and also, does the phone do anything when plugged in ?? no charging indicator or lights, vibrations ???

I will try taking the battery out and putting it back in with the three buttons together.
Also, no light or vibration when plugged in USB..
If the jig fails, any idea of the ball park for the cost for it to be repaired?
if the jig fails, send it off to samsung a blame it on a failed KIES update, act dumb and hope for the best, chances are they wont charge

first of all CHILL OUT !! dont panic or you could make the same mistake.
Download this http://sourceforge.net/projects/teamhacksung/files/galaxys/GT-I9000_FROYO_FULL_PDA.tar/download
DO NOT use pit and DO NOT select re-partition
let me know the outcome, if the above firmware dont fix it, we need to get you a 3 file firmware THEN and only THEN do we add PIT and REPARTITION

Thanks for the encouraging words..
I'm downloading it now, 370mb?!
After download, do I use Odin 1.3 or 1.7 to flash the TAR and ONLY THE TAR?
BTW I'm with Windows 7 64 bit, I've seen guides saying 1.7 may not work perfectly... however It worked fine for me with installying Darkys rom..
i use 1.7 too, also running win 7 64 bit. no problems for me.
the firmware is a FULL FROYO including all dbdata's bootloaders, kernel the full monty
only insert the .tar file in the PDA section of odin.
it may not fix you completely, but it will restore most of the corruption, however we may need a 3 file firmware with PIT to fix the file system.
but we will cross that bridge when we need to

do you have kies installed on your PC ?? if you do uninstall it, and then re install it, this will re-install the drivers,
if you dont have kies, try this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=728929
Finally, when you are about to flash using odin MAKE SURE KIES IS **NOT** RUNNING, EVEN IN THE ICON TRAY.

Hello gentlement. I have an Galaxy S I9000, and i have used a custom rom for about 2-3 months, unfortunately i can't remember which one, and as i cant boot my phone, im not sure how i can find out. I flashed it using Odin and Clockwork mod, both of which worked great. The problem now started out with me not being able to start my phone while charging, didn't pay much attention to it and just waited until it was charged, or unplugged it, started it, then charged it while it was on.
Now im having a different problem. I cant start my phone, the startscreen just says "Samsung galaxy S" etc, and it tries to reboot again and again.
I can start the phone into "download mode", but recovery mode doesnt seem to work.
Since the rom has been working flawlessly in the past, im not sure its the roms "fault"; might just be my phone singing on it's last verse.
Does anybody know what can cause this, or have a fix i can do in download mode?
I think i have read all the necesarry stickies, if i've missed something i apologize.
Thanks for all responses, regards - superegge
When this happens on ICS I reflash a kernel through odin in download mode and then reflash the ROM.
If your ROM is non wipe you could try this, otherwise I'd just try flashing a kernel and see if it boots.

yep, it could be due to cable or mostly the PC, try on lap top or another PC, added concerning this to Quick fixes, take a rest first,
ive had the same problem with Odin. But that had to do with rooting, and the oneclick superuser program.
Hopefully it will work when you try on a new pc. Good luck superegge!
