[Q] Nexus One development version, unlock? - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello
I'm thinking on purchasing a developer version of the Nexus One. Among the specs of the phone it says :
No root access
Bootloader locked
Fastboot NOT enabled
Does this mean that it is not possible to have root access with this phone?
Thanks.

There's no reason to think you can't unlock it or root it.
The nexus ones sold before Google closed the web store was the same. There was no root access and the bootloader is locked (you void your warranty by unlocking the bootloader). And fastboot is enabled by unlocking the bootloader.

To me, this says the dev phone is exactly the same phone they sold online. Although they never said any of it before, now they're stating it.
Now if they only sold "AT&T" dev phones....

You can unlock and root the Dev phone. I'm glad I got the AT&T version while the store was open. I think the AT&T versions will be going for a hefty price used.

You can root and install custom roms even without fastboot anyway

question about oneclick root / unlocking bootloader for ROMS?

hi, i'm from the x10 forum converting to a nexus one =) I searched around and I'm a little bit confused about rooting for flashing roms. I see some guides about unlocking the bootloader first, then rooting. ( i think old method??) Now theres the one click root, am i required to unlock the bootloader first, then use the 1 click root, because i know the 1 click root doesn't unlock the bootloader.
so first do i have to unlock bootloader, and if i do, can i use the 1 click root with unlocking bootloader? and can i load a rom after i root without unlocking the bootloader?
I also read on a different website that unlocking the bootloader is only required for phones locked to a provider, so does that mean that if i unlock the bootloader, my phone will also be network unlocked?
Just want to get this right so i dont' brick my new phone tomorrow
You don't need to unlock the bootloader.
Once rooted, you will need a custom recovery to flash new roms.
Make sure you use a recovery that is compatible with your screen (SLCD requires the newer Amon Ra).

U can use this new SuperOneClick v1.4 (Root, Enable Non-Market App, Get UNLOCK code):

Better to Unlock bootloader
One click root is an amazing thing. It helps you root your android and install recovery without unlocking bootloader and voiding your warranty. But its better to unlock your bootloader just to be on the safer side. Stock roms flash both the Rom and the recovery. Froyo 2.2.1 even reverts an already rooted device.
Warning: your warranty will be void if you unlock bootloader.

Wrong, the thread's 1st post states what devices it works on and the Nexus is listed...
"It works with almost all phones and all android versions. (including the i9000, Droid, Nexus One)"
Okay but why do we Nexus folks care that the app can get Samsung unlock codes and enable a feature that was never disabled on our phones in the first place?
And why would we prefer a Windows app to an on-device root method?

@danger-rat thanks for the info, i didn't realize that there would be a difference between slcd and amoled, I got the amoled one so i think i'm safe on most recoveries?
@galaxys and inferus- oneclickroot is the best, thats how i got my x10 rooted, but sony's epic fail is forcing me to change over to something more updated, i'm sick of being stuck on 1.6. so no worries about bootloader?
can anyone answer my last question, is my phone locked to tmobile only until i unlocked it? or does it come unlock, and it just a tmobile version because its compatible with tmo 3g?

The Nexus isn't locked to any carrier, but the hardware is specific to different frequencies. For example, I took my T-Mo nexus to the UK earlier this year, switched out the SIM for an Orange one, and everything was great. However, if I use an AT&T SIM, I will only get 2G speeds because AT&T uses a 3G frequency that's not supported by the T-Mo nexus hardware.
Do a wiki search on the carrier you want, and it will list the operating frequencies for their network - just compare with you phone specs for compatibility.

Bootloader unlock not allowed...

Hi - my daughter was given the SP as a gift - it was SIM locked to a UK carrier because it was an (unwanted) upgrade. She got the unlock code and now is SIM free.
However, I noticed that the bootloader is locked (obviously) but also unlocking the bootloader is not possible (says NO).
I realise that Doomlord's rooting method works for locked bootloaders, but she is used to using CM. Whether CM or AOSP will appear for the SP or not is something only time will tell.
So, should I suggest she sells this and get something else, or will some exploit in the near future allow the bootloader to be "unlockable"?
I seem to remember krabappel2548 was looking in to something along those lines...
In general the only way to unlock bootloader is by using the official Sony ways by getting code from them but if it says bootloader not allowed then there will be no way possible.
On older phones you could unlock bootloader via text point method, this is not possible with the sp because when you take back off you can only see sim slot and SD card slot.
So if she is in a hurry then sell while phone is still new.

[Q] GSM Unlocked/T Mobile Motomaker Firmware

I plan to root my 32 GB Motomaker GSM Unlocked/Tmobile Moto X by downgrading to 4.2.2.
To do that I need the 4.2.2. firmware, but I don't know which firmware to use as I know there is a Tmobile 16GB phone.
Which firmware do I use? Is the firmware labeled TMobile the same as the GSM unlocked?

4.4 Update

those are the the two firmware files you need to root. Good luck and here is a guide to help you along
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2603358
Good luck and let me know if you have any issues
Stop stop. Don't do that. Just get the unlock code and unlock the boot loader. That way you can root and recover and not mess with exploits that can wreck your phone while the boot loader is locked.
If its unlocked you don't need to jump through those hoops. Simply flash twrp recovery and reboot system and it will install supersu.

he is correct still use this guide but go down to the section about root with a unlocked bootloader. it will get you right threw it a lot easier and faster.
Thing with that is that it voids the warranty since he has the Moto maker version and not the dev

You are right. I don't want to unlock the boot loader because of the warranty issue.
Following the process - although lengthy - will root without voiding the warranty.

Catch 22 then... Because once you go 4.4.2 you won't be able to downgrade anyway. BTW, at least until recently, the phone comes with 4.2.2 and immediately updates to 4.4 so you shouldn't have to downgrade if you want to try all that. Here's the other thing you should know... You have 2 weeks to return of exchange the phone (30 days in California) from the day you got it. You unlock and root and do all that and find an issue you can return it regardless of have it replaced. I know because I had to do that... My moto maker x was also boot loader unlocked and I got my money back.
Its not all that likely you will get something wrong with the phone past the initial period but it's up to you. You are more likely to break the phone trying to root exploit than it breaking past 2 weeks out of warranty.

What if my phone is Developer Edition (GSM) - will I be able to downgrade from 4.4.2 to 4.2.2? I am willing to unlock bootloader and to root.
If you take the OTA to 4.4.2 you get the 30.B4 bootloader. From what I've read, you cannot go back to an earlier bootloader and earlier system versions will brick if attempting to use them with the 30.B4 bootloader. So no, I don't think you can revert to anything earlier if you get to 4.4.2. At least this is my understanding.

[Q] Can we get model specific forums or enforce the posting of models in the develope

I've come from a long line of Nexus devices. Rooting was just a few short commands away, always. But I have no idea what to do with this device. Do I have to use RockMyMoto? Do I have to use SlapMyMoto? I have the 1053 so surely I should just be able to do OEM unlock right?
I haven't found any thread that says what specific way it should be done for what specific device model. When I asked in the Dev threads I gotten barked at.
With the Galaxy Nexus there with VZW and GSM separate development threads. Why on earth is the Moto X, which has 4 versions, all grouped together?!

I understand your frustration and it might clean up the threads but might not, actually think the problem is people starting duplicate and triplicate threads. The only 2 moto x that can not be bootloader unlock are Verizon & AT&T consumer versions, all other versions can be bootloader unlocked. I would suggest pm'ing a moderator to see if anything can be done

I had similar issues coming from a Galaxy Nexus toro and trying figure out how to unlock and root. I really have no recollection of unlocking or rooting my last device as it was so long ago. Starting on a new device almost felt like I had never done it before. Someone else wrote up this link which is the best resource I have come across: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2603358
Even though the Moto X has several different variants, they all use the same root exploit with their own firmware. It's really not that difficult to follow.
If you can root an Android device, you can figure out which firmware you need to use with which root exploit (of which there is only 1 for all the variants). If you need help unlocking the bootloader and rooting, you're probably not all that bright.

not for the fact that most of the roms cross model's and so forth i am working on making my guide a one stop shop for all root info just give me some time. i just added some info at the top that i just post below that will help everyone get started.
Ok so you want to Root your device, There are a couple questions you need to ask your self first
1. Do i care about warranty
A. If you say yes then go no farther in this and just use slapmymoto to root your phone( See Guide for Locked bootloaders)
B. if you say no then continue to the next question
2. If my bootloader able to be unlocked?( go Here to see if it can be.)
A. If it can't be unlocked then use slapmymoto to root your phone( See Guide for Locked bootloaders)
B. if it can be then move to the next question
3. What custom Recovery do i want ClockWork Mod or TWRP.
A. if you pick CWM then go Here and download it(See Guide for Unlocked Bootloader)
B. if you pick TWRP then go Here and download it(See Guide for Unlocked Bootloader)
(this display is not 100% correct still working out some issues and info!

If rooting was so important you should have gotten a developer edition or an X with an unlockable bootloader. I haven't had to slap, pwn, crack, sneeze my moto or any of that nonsense. Within ten minutes of turning my phone on I had root. I was one of the first to have 4.4.2 and I'm one of the few who were able to update and keep root.

Paid Off SM-G900A, Unlockable Bootloader?

My girlfriend's AT&T S5 is finally paid off. Will AT&T unlock the bootloader? I'm coming from a Nexus so this Samsung thing is a bit prohibitive... can you use fastboot to fully restore all partitions?
No. There is no root or unlockable bootloader
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G870A using Tapatalk
The only thing AT&T will unlock (since its paid for) is the SIM.
It should be illegal what AT&T does with the bootloader. If I pay for a phone, and after all contractual obligations are finished, it shouldn't be any more difficult to unlock the bootloader than it is to unlock the SIM. AT&T should have no control over something they DO NOT OWN.
Is this site that claims root and custom recovery legit?
Yes, if you are on 4.4.2. That is an old tutorial, which you can actually find the same method on XDA. There is no current method of rooting our phones if you've taken 5.0. There is only hope that a method may exist in 6.0.1.
