Simple answer is yes you can. On a side note (not to be mean), this should have been posted in the Q&A section.

If you already have root, then you can wipe your sd card clean, format it, or whatever, and you will still have root. You will just need to reflash your ROM if you use apps2sd or partition for it. If you do reflash the ROM, then I would suggest a complete wipe (data/dalvich/ext). I have reformatted my sd card many times and never once have i lost root because of it.

Hi guys, first of all, yes I'm noob, but neither I'm dumb or lazy. All I'm looking for is being pointed in the right direction, and some help in understanding how to upgrade the phone to something different than a paperweight or brick, whichever you prefer..
I've been considering upgrading my X8 with a custom ROM, and been reading a lot, but info is still very confusing, and in some threads downloads aren't available anymore. So i decided to create this thread and try to sum all my questions at once... If you could point out some easy guide links, I'd appreciate.
So.. Here's where I'm at.. I already rooted my phone and unlocked the bootloader. And now I'm stuck..
I dunno how to properly backup my data (i want call log, messages, images, apps, etc...), neither how to backup my ROM and stock kernel.
Also i find the flashing kernel and ROM process still a bit confusing. Dunno how to safely proceed to upgrade it.
And finally I'm confused in which ROM i should choose. I've looked at MiniCM10 with JB, but there are some minor bugs. I also saw SEMC Debrand Engine, ICZaraki and SonySX ROMs that looked great, but i'm unsure which will be best for me. I'm not looking for flashing it many times, in preference, I'd love to do it only once, and get it right at first. All i want is a fast, stable, bug free, and good looking ROM.

1. ROMs are constantly updated when a more stable version has been built.
2. ROM can be backed up in CWM recovery (or TWRP if you are using it). Just go to Backup and restore and select backup.
3. Images that are stored in the sdcard are not deleted unless you format it.
4. It's pretty much impossible to brick (the coma brick) a phone while flashing ROMs. You may suffer from bootloops though, which is what we call a soft brick. Just make sure you factory reset and wipe cache partition (or whatever the particular ROM requires you to do; that's why there are instructions).

2. What or What??? Maybe you missed the part where i said i'm a noob, and therefor can't understand all the Acronyms you spell.. And that is a BIG part of all my confusion in understanding most posts.
4. Factory reset i suppose it's on the phone menu, but how exactly do I wipe the cache?
This is why i asked for some proper guide links. I know you probably have been repeating the same things over and over again, and don't want to be one more, all i ask for is proper direction.

Youre phone is rooted right ?you must have cwm or xrecovery installed..to have a nandroid backup just go to
Backup and restore>backup
Then wait till it finishes
Just go to restore option if u want to go back from your working backup

Thanks bryan, yes my phone is rooted but all apps i see are Superuser and Titanium Backup, no xrecovery or cwm...
As for the brands own backup app, i used it already, and i think it backups pretty much all the data i need. If that's enough, great. But i still need to learn how to backup ROM and kernel before proceeding to flash.

everything x8/w8 still doesn't tell me how to backup my stock rom and kernel.. don't i need this in case things go wrong or i simply want to roll back to stock?

the choice of kernel depends on which rom you're planning to use. some roms can be used on top of different kernels, so you may have to test them for yourself first.

I decided to go with MiniCM10, but i want to partition 2Gb of my 8Gb SD card for swap and apps, and i'm a little confused..
According to:
needs a clean install of miniCM10:
flash JB kernel
in CWM, go to mount&storage :
then, format /system, /data and /cache (so that kernel can use the new partitions size) any data on phone memory will be lost
set up your swap:
==> go to /advanced/Partition SD Card
if you don't want to use a2sd, then choose the minimal size for ext, and the size you want for SWAP
it will FORMAT your SDcard ! any data on SDcard will be LOST
and install the rom
swap partition should work
what doesn't work is the swap info menu

All my SD card data will be lost, is this true? If so, how do i proceed to backup and restore my backups to my sd card?

first

its free and you need it to partition your sd card or any other partition tool
8GB as a guide just change to sd size
1. back up your sd card to pc/laptop
2. open partition tool select your sd card and resize to 6gb
3. now with unallocated space make a new partition in ext3/4 2gb (make sure that both partitions are primary NOT logical )
4. now format both partitions
5. now put all your files back on your sd card. windows will only see the 6gb fat32 partition don't worry thats fine

I am new here, but i have similar problem. I want miniCM10 ROM with jb kernel, but i cannot flash my device. When i try i get this. See picture. Can anyone help me cuz i am new and i am big noob. I have rooted my sk17i my android version is 2.3.4. if you need more informations just say.. please help :'(

you need to install proper drivers for your device to work
you can get it from Flashtool Directory>drivers>Flashtool-drivers.exe
run the executable file and choose the drivers for x8, fastboot, flashmode to be sure

I'm just getting ready to flash the release candidate cm10.1. Don't mean to ask dumb questions but before I do it I just would like some verification that I've done all my prep work correctly. I've backed up my user apps on Titanium Backup, Did a stock system backup on TWRP. Tranfered the CM10.1.3-RC and GAPPS to my internal storage. So if I understand everything correctly all I need to do is wipe and then install the 2 files and it should reboot into CM10.1. I'm sure I'll get all kinds of negative comments from members, but we all have to have started somewhere at some time. So someone please let me know if I've done this right to this point and that I'm ready to install. I've been waiting for a more stable CM10.1 version since I got this phone and was pleasantle surprised to see it appear late last night. Thanks so much for any support I can get!!!! AND WISH ME LUCK!!!!

Dont worry you wont get any negative comments thats what this forum is here for. Sounds like you got the process down. do a factory wipe and also to remember to wipe the system too in the advance wipe section. just avoid wiping the internal storage, sdcard or USB-otg. after that yea queue up the zips in TWRP and reboot.
I would back your backups to your pc or cloud as a just incase.

Well it seems all went well. Thanks for giving me the confidence to move forward and do this. When I pull down the notification screen and tap the upper right hand icon I see a small triangle that says "searching for...." I do have wifi enabled and I have a feeling it is searching for a network. Is that normal or can I disable it? Also is there a way to add or remove what is shown on that panel? Thanks again
I can access the CM12 Recovery but thats it. I have tried with many nightlies sideloading through adb or just from the sd card but it still isnt working. I don't mind downgrading but I can't work out how to.

No offence but that's crappy advice, imo. If you tell people that the only way to recover from a soft brick is by restoring stock, you'll help raise a full generation of idiots. Flashing a stock .FTF can do many things if you don't know how to use Flashtool, including wiping the internal storage (which I'm sure OP doesn't want), and is only really necessary if nothing else works.
@H0lmEd: Try flashing the TWRP recovery (2.8.5.0 is the latest available version) and while you're at it, flash the boot image of the nightly you've downloaded. Boot into TWRP, then backup your data partition (if you have any data on there that you'd like to restore later). Then wipe /system, /cache, /data and dalvik (basically anything but your SD card and internal storage), and flash the ROM zip. You should be up and running again.
If you want to restore any apps and such, you can try just restoring from TWRP, or (preferably) using an app (like Titanium Backup) to restore your apps and their data from the recovery backup.

I believe that your intentions were good, as were mine; I was simply pointing out that your advice is valid and satisfactory, but that there are many methods that are more efficient and overall superior.
You are free to remove your account should you so please, but having somebody correct you is no reason to wish to do that -- must I switch schools (or worse, commit suicide) because my math teacher corrected me when I had made an error!? We're here to help other people learn, both you and me. There are hundreds upon hundreds of people that know better than both of us, and we are here to learn from them. Taking the comment of your advice to your heart is no way to go about it (or anything else in life, for that matter). Instead what you should see is a short critique of your advice, followed by a comment on what is better and why that is so -- see the knowledge and helpfulness, don't stop because you did something that wasn't perfect.
And though my comment was not meant as a derogatory one, I do see that my poor choice of words could and, in fact, should, be improved upon.
I'm gonna sell this phone as rooted, so yes I DO KNOW the factory resets keeps the root and recovery and all that. But can I SAFELY do a factory reset from the Settings, just to remove my personal info. The phone has stock rom, but is rooted and has TWRP installed. Thanks.

I'd use a Rom Update Utility (RUU) on it before selling it... You can always just flash the recovery after, the same way you did it before. Because that will definitely get rid of anything you have on it, and I would put a different SD card in it to!

Just out of interest, if I just did a plain reset in settings, would it like, screw up my phone? I assume not, since the rooting/recovery is stored in different partitions, and factory resets only /data (user data)?

No it won't screw up the phone but the thing is your personal information could still be on there just overwritten and someone who's smart enough could still get the information restored and do whatever with it so if you've done banking and stuff on it I'd advise you to use the RUU and completely wipe the SD card or put another one in there because you can still restore overwritten information..

Just decided to get a nexus 6. Had so many different phones over the years but never a nexus. I like the phone and love Stock android but I want some options that I can't believe are still missing from stock android (tap to wake, custom nav buttons/quick toggles)
I haven't rooted a phone in a couple years, can someone point me in the right direction for root and recovery?
I think I'm gonna go with Pure Nexus rom but any other suggestions would be appreciated.

If you are going to install a custom ROM you won't need to root prior. Unlock the bootloader and flash TWRP. Something like this thread should do it, you can skip the obtain root section as it really isn't necessary if you plan on flashing a custom ROM.
I think I'm gonna go with Pure Nexus rom but any other suggestions would be appreciated.

ROMs are personal preferences. Does the ROM have the features you want and need? If yes, then you found the ROM for you. If not, you may want to check out some other ROM(s).

Unlocking the bootloader wipes the device, this is mandatory. If you want to remove encryption, you will also need to wipe internal storage. Otherwise no you generally won't have to wipe the entire device. You will likely need to perform a factory reset between different ROMs, and ROMs that have done some heavy changes between versions. A factory reset in TWRP doesn't wipe the internal storage, but will wipe all of your apps and settings. You can also mount the phone or use ADB in TWRP if you need to transfer files from a computer.
