[Q] Newb questions! help please :) - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys, so I have an unrooted & locked stock froyo N1 on FRF91. After I bought my phone, I manually updated to FRF85B, and then manually to FRF91 (too impatient to wait for froyo!). I tried searching the forums, but came up empty handed, so here are my questions!
I was just wondering if this would affect me receiving OTAs in the future and updating applications. For example, when the new Facebook and Twitter version came out I didn't get a notification and I couldn't update it through Marketplace, so I had to download them and install them through Marketplace to get the newest version. However, I can automatically update applications such as Google Maps and Google Voice. Does me manually upgrading have to do anything with this?
Also, I saw a new version named "FRF91-UP" floating around the forums, was this an OTA upgrade? I know it contains the new Gmail application as well as the new Facebook and Twitter app as well, and if it was a OTA upgrade, I never got it . Is there something I have to do to start getting these OTAs if it is an OTA? Or is this a leaked update?
Sorry for so many questions, I'm still learning how to use android to its full capacity ! And thanks in advance to whoever can help me out!!

From what i read, YES, your full stock, long as you got Stock recovery you will receive OTA's from whoever sends them, some Updates require to do a manual update.. i did the manual update too and all my apps get auto update, and i get notifications too, jus like everything else you can try do a recovery(stock) wipe/factory reset.. this might help in some way..
a buddy did this 2 days ago and he got some features that where there b4, he waited for the OTA's,then again i dont think he was really looking.. Lol
and i never heard of any FRF91-UP or seen anything around.. if anything i would have heard from my friend that has waited and all
Edit-
I just googled FRF91-UP this is for rooted phones.. if anything the pulled the update gmail and whatever else and ported it to whatever phone

[Q] How to turn off OTA updates?

Hello, I have an N1 with the Innovation OS! v4.0.0 [FRF91] image, I'm getting OTA notices like every 10 minutes asking me to update to the 2.2.1 thing. I use my phone as my clock by my bed, and the updater thing pops up over it and won't go away. I've tried installing the update, and read through many threads about it, and I don't want to unroot my phone so I can root it again just to apply this update.
How can I turn off the system updates option? Can this be done? When there are more ROMs with the FRG83 junk in them, I'll flash it then...
I've seen this question asked a few times by a few people in various threads about the 2.2.1 update, but I haven't seen it answered yet... I'm sorry if it already has been, just point me to the thread...
Thanks!

[Q] OTA upgrade path?

ok so im new to the bionic scene but not new to android, i've had an OG droid since the day the came out and it finally gave out after 2 years of wear and tear
my question is what exactly is all this talk about staying on the "OTA upgrade path"?? and whats the importance of doing so?
ive tried searching but no answers, just people talking about it
you dont have to stay on the upgrade path. you just need to be able to get back on the upgrade path when new updates are being pushed to your phone from verizon. if you install a custom rom or freeze any system apps you are not on the upgrade path anymore. in order to recieve otas your phone has to be stock. being rooted is ok but be carfull as some otas break root. just keep an eye out on these forums and people will post about new otas.

[Q] No search for update on i9305

Hey everyone, wanted to ask a couple questions regarding my S3 LTE (first post so be kind! )
I recently upgraded to the S3 LTE (I'm with T-Mobile/EE UK), as most of you know it comes with Android 4.1.1, I've heard that the update to 4.1.2 is becoming available, I wanted to do a manual search for it, but nothing shows up in the settings menu. I have gone to 'about device', but there is no option to manually search. Anyone know why it is not present?
Also, I've installed quite a few large apps (mainly games), and I've almost maxed out my internal storage, I've still got 400mb left. I have tried to install a few small apps, such as the original Angry Birds (27.63mb) but everytime I try to download it or other apps I get a message saying 'insufficient storage' or 'package file invalid'.
I've included screenshots.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!
The update will need to be done via kies unless you are going to root and install a different ROM
the second issue, you will have to make more space, sounds like there isnt enough space to save, and unpack the apps.

Sorry I'm a newb, don't really know what Kies is or what it exactly does (also not looking to root or anything like that)?
I always thought you would get the notification of a software update or manually search.
Also, I understand that space is low, but surely 400mb should be enough for small apps like Angry Birds to save and unpack?

Kies is Samsung Software to sync.backup etc your phone. it also lets you update the firmware when it is officially released.
The Samsung phones don't do OTA(Over the Air) updates like some other phones
With the space, the phone may have a fail safe minimum to keep as if there is non left then most apps will probably have no where to save temp files.
This is the only negative I have with the S3 phones.
Go here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1942150
Did mine today, 4.1.2 stock + root, it took 17 minutes.
Once updated it then will allow you to update OTA when required.
Samsung phones do update OTA. There obviously isn't an update out for your country or carrier yet.

He said he is with Orange / EE so the update is out.
If he uses the method I posted he will be fine. :good:
Thanks for the reply guys, I installed Kies and was notified that an update was available, I installed the update, which was not 4.1.2 and there was no change to the build number etc. However now on my about page there is an option for 'software update' to manually search for updates, which I as stated was not previously there.
Also, I'm not looking to root, but thanks for the info anyway.

Wanna update but can't

I don't understand a lot of these phone jargon so if this has been answered just kindly help me out.
I have a droid bionic which i rooted a while back to play games with my ps3 controller. Simply put that's about the only thing I did with it. Well as the updates came, I just unrooted and didn't wanna have anything to do with rooting again, but this ICS update came out a while back and I keep getting the Update Unsuccessful message when I do the OTA thing. I factory reset my phone (lost my favorite digial clock) and that didn't work. I even looked up youtube videos on how to manually update and it doesn't work and leaves me with some error. My phone works great it's just I want to use the most recent update now, but I'm stuck on android 5.9.905 gingerbread and I can't update.
So anyone savy with this know my problem and how it might be fixed?

[Q] Information Overload!

OK, I've read so much that things are just getting jumbled in my brain now. There's so much information in these threads that I don't know where to start. The world of Android apparently moves too fast for me to keep up. I've got a Verizon LG G2 that is stuck on 4.4.2, software version 24A. Right after I took the OTA KK upgrade I rooted with IORoot25. I don't think I've done anything other than root, however I have somehow can create the mobile hot spot without permissions. Not sure if there was an .apk that was put on when I rooted or how I did it because it was over a year ago.
Ever since I rooted, my phone tries to push OTA updates but they are always unsuccessful. Every morning I have to hit "Install Later" becasue it tried over night and failed. Besides this being a bit annoying, I haven't been concerned becasue the only OTAs since I got 4.4.2 was supposedly some small patch that didn't really do much (from what I read). But, the other day it notified me that it wanted to push Lollipop and needless to say, I want it.
My problem: I don't know what the hell to do! Besides rooting, I'm pretty sure the only thing I've done is download Flashify and backup my stock recovery. Flashify doesn't show that I have a custom recovery, nor do I ever remember installing one. Just whatever came with the IORoot25. Oh, and it looks like I Quarantined LGSetupWizard using App Quarentine. Pretty sure that's it. So, where do I go from here?? I'm wanting to move to Lollipop, then possibly de-bloat it, and would like a custom recovery so that I can create nandroid backups and possibly start trying out other custom ROMs.
I had an OG Droid for years and would flash ROMs frequently until I upgraded to a RAZR MAXX. Once I got the MAXX, and now the LG, all I've really done is root and hack the wifi, so I'm REALLY out of the loop now! Everything seems so complicated becasue there's just too much info out there. Could somebody please guide me in the right direction to make this as smooth as possible??
Thanks for reading and helping a NooB out. Ugh...can't believe I have to start calling myself that again!!
You could 'freeze' the update so it doesn't pop up every morning. IF you want to update- you can unroot it and then take the update and re-root it and fix the hotspot thing. I'm in the same boat, I'm about to do the same myself.

Thanks for the response. Hoe do I "freeze" the update? If I do decide to take the update and re-root, and especially if I start loading custom ROMs, I know I'm going to want to do this in the future. I've been getting theses OTA update notifications everyday for months now!!
Also, what's the easiest way to unroot?
AS long as you are running stock I believe you can accept the OTA without unrooting: I haven't done it yet as I haven't had a few free hours, but I'm going to try it tonight.
there are plenty of apps that allow you to freeze apps- titanium Backup Pro is one that comes to mind.
