Hello everybody! I am new here and do not currently own an android device and have a tmobile g1 question. Some one on craigslist is selling a g1 and titling it as soft bricked. He says it is stuck at the tmobile screen. How would you fix this? I was thinking of purchasing it to mess around with android for a good price. Anyone know how you would fix this/ restore it from this state? If there is nothing I could do than I would just save abit more and buy a different one.
You wont know until you have the phone on your hands, not a lot of people are truthful now a days.
First see if he has rooted it, by pressing the home+power on start up, unfortunately I use Amon RA Recovery image which means I only know what that recovery image looks like which in most cases all fonts are green and it gives you options, if you can get into that, then that means that he was trying to flash a ROM on to it and not had the right SPL on it "or so I am believing".
Also check the conditions of the phone, i.e broken screen, swollen battery, etc... Also be careful with people from CriagList, also follow their guidelines for your safety.

I was wondering if anyone knows how i can purposely brick my g1/dream. My keyboard is fcked up and I know that i still have T-Mobile's warranty. I just wanna be able to brick it where the T-Mobiles center's employee cant boot into recovery and get passed the G1 boot screen...any advice?
(Should i revert back to stock recovery img and rom? Then flash danger spl?)

Downgrade the radio w/danger spl installed
Or if not install danger spl without the newest radio
the same way many of people have "accidentally" bricked their phones. just do what Diceman4 said, good ole 1.33.2005 can do it every time.
Curious why you would want to brick your phone, t-mobile will replace it just because the keyboard is bad, they replaced one of mine because the sd card reader stopped working. I'm not sure if they have measures in place to determine if you "bricked" your phone of if it was a faulty phone, but if you can revert to stock firmware and get a warranty replacement, why go about that way?
so if i use any of these methods...the employee wont be able to boot into recovery? or should i revert back into the original recov...just incase?
(i dont exactly want him to see RA's version)
The keyboard doesn't work, they should replace it under warranty.
Keep in mind there's a fee involved if they determine the phone was damaged by you and it was not a defective unit, I'd play it safe and revert to stock firmware and then warranty it, but that's just me
well it's not completely dead...it's just that the space key doesnt press easily. you gotta force press it for it to work. i dont wanna hear some **** that it's not under warranty cause i damaged it for whatever reason.
As long as your phone doesn't have any cracked plastics and your ldi is still white you should be fine. Just unroot and file under warranty. And just to speed up the process tell them you've already master reset the phone and you're still having the same issue.
I'm having the same issue with my space bar as well. For the second time. Faulty design? I always keep my hands clean and have never spilled anything on the phones. I don't even take them out if it's raining outside.
You have the white version? Both of mine have been white. Have a friend with a black G1/Dream and his is fine. Let me know how your return goes.
My ADP1 does this...i just live with it.
Geeze... warranty?
This is something that can be cured by CLEANING it.
Open it up, take the keyboard apart, clean it, put it back together. Fixed.
the keyboard connectors are a sealed thing, ive already had is stripped with mine as i have a dodgy backspace and enter key,
I have had a htc g1 t mobile in 100% working condition for a long period of time. a month ago i rooted the phone ( and i was successful), downgraded the phone to rc29 and tried to put the hero firm ware into my phone. in the process of trying to put the new firm ware i came across some difficulties and now, as what they say "bricked" my phone. immediately as this happened i was able to reach such screens as holding the end key and the camera key landing upon a white page with some options. not having much knowledge i played around with it and now my phone is completely unresponsive. all it will do is start up and stay on the g1 spalsh home screen and only when i take out the battery will it shut of. holding down any certain keys together does not seem to help. i have also given my phone to such companies as SN traders who were unsuccessful in repairing it as they said " they could not identify the problem". perhaps they never really tried. but the point is, i want my phone to work again. do you have any suggestions as to what i may do to bring my phone back to life or perhaps suggest a place to go to that will repair it for a fee. Please help . thanks in advance

When Upgrading to the newest hero rom did you
1. Upgrage to the newest radio? http://code.google.com/p/sapphire-port-dream/
2. Upgrade to the newest SPL? ( You can find it in the first URL)
3. Partition Your SD card to a Fat32/ext3/Linux-Swap?
yes i recal doing all of those things i believe in the process of upgrading to the newest spl or newest radio i went wrong. i think i tried to put a file on b4 having the prerequiste for it. not sure which one. but in the middle of these process is where the problem arose.

When Upgrading the SPL, what where the steps you took?
Did you upgrade the Radio before the SPL?
hmmmmm, seems you screwed yourself. knowledge is power and not enough knowledge is a huge downfall. maybe next time you will take the time to read and understand
sorry, please try again
seems the wrecking crew's bans are all lifted cept for 2

i dont remeber my memory is kind of vague this happend over a month ago. i have resulted to this forum due to a lack of help from such companies as SN trader who had my phone for a month and could not fix it. say i did upgrade the radio b4 the spl? in fact, as i type it, it seems more likely that is what i did.

When applying the latest SPL did you flash a new rom right after??
...
all i remeber is i had the rom on my sd card and when i tried to flash it it showed an error or somthing. this might not be accurate to what actullay happend but my memory is shot.
again with the victim theme? the guy who go's out, buys a new r-1 with no motorcycle endorsement or training then piles it into a tree isn't a victim. he's an idiot. now, what you did is not nearly that, but if you can't get into any recovery screens, you own a brick.
sorry, but rooting your phone isn't like changing the wall paper. bad things can happen.
Seriously buddy, there are warning signs posted on almost all the threads on this forums when dealing with flashing stuff. All the risks are laid out and people will tell you to do your research before doing anything. I was scared ****less the first time i installed the "death/danger" spl even though i knew exactly what i was doing.
You bricked your phone.
There's not much else to say, on the developer section of this forum, there's a thread , something about "thinktank for bricked g1's" go there and you might find some solutions
arbab01, I sent you a PM.
So, I have a T-Mobile G1, and lately, I was trying to install different custom ROMs to check out which one suits me.On the Android Spin site I noticed JesterBlur, and looked it up.It said in a thread that in order to install it I must have the Haykuro's SPL.I was previously using cyanogenmod with cm recovery 1.4, and when I installed the SPL the phone asked me to reboot.Ever since, when I press the power button to open it,it gets stuck on th T-mobile G1 screen. No combinations work, including Camera + Power.Any ideas anyone?
It's dead. 1.33.2005 SPL requires the 26i radio, which you should have had already.
if you bought the phone on a contract walk in to the store and say that after accepting an update the phone rebooted and will not turn on. Try so sound as un-techsavvy as possible. They should replace it.
Eitherwise you either need to buy a new one, or replace the motherboard (thus replacing the borked nand).
First of all thanks for replying so quickly.
And secondly.....The phone might not be exactly the T-mobile G1, but an Android Dev Phone 1......I just said T-mobile G1 because they're very similar...Oh and I also tried the conbination Trackball + Power and a blue led appers.Anyone knows what it means? And since I can't quite take it for a service, does anyone know ANY way to restore my phone?ANYTHING!Even if I have to do it manually.....It's useless in this condition anyway.......
Only thing you can do to getting working again is to replace the motherboard. Doesn't look too hard and I'm sure you can pick up G1's with cracked screens on ebay pretty cheap.
Hi,
I want to ask for some advice!
I just purchased a "broken" G1 from ebay in the hope that I would be able to fix and sell on...
However, it is proving more difficult than initially assumed.
It doesn't boot into recovery and instead stalls at the flash screen (T-mobile G1). The phone feels relatively new (slide is tons better than my working G1) and I don't think has been rooted.
Discovered not rooted, but when updating via the T-Mobile over-the-air service system froze. I don't know whether this is a radio, spl or rom issue...
I have tried all the various boots (camera + power, call + menu + power & home + power) with no success...
Is there anything I can do to salvage this G1? Or is it destined to return to ebay...
Many thanks,
Joeleenus
from everything i have read, if camera+power doesnt bring up bootloader, and power+home doesnt bring up recovery menu... i think its a brick... but i have only been doing research into the issue with the "broken" g1 that i picked up for the past 10 hours.... lol
How do you know its not rooted? Have you tried to see if adb picks it up at any moment from the time you turn it on to 5 mins down the road of the G1 screen?
If its never been rooted, how could it have bricked? Post the ebay listing language if you have it, see what seller said. Im thinking water damage. (You could try remoistening it and then put in rice for a few days with battery out, reactivate the wetness and then dry it again - just a crazy thought)
Read up on the cyanogenmod wiki on bricks and if you have skills, try a JTAG to debrick the phone.

If you can't get passed the boot screen, there there is no way you can find out if it was rooted, well, unless it was bricked while rooting / updating to a new ROM, which is probably the case.
The only way to unbrick the device is by using JTAG equipment. You can purchase it yourself, it is a bit expensive. Or, you can look for people locally who have JTAG equipment. Look around for PC repair shops, XBOX modders, etc. Craigslist is a great place to start. Many offer JTAG services at a small fee (in comparison to the potential profit you could make off the repaired device.)
I tried to flash a stock ROM after getting sick of the little glitches in custom ROMs. Big mistakeand possibly fatal (for my Tab anyway).
I get a Black screen only, but I know it is on as my PC recognises it. I can't go into Download or Recovery either.
I managed to flash a Pit (hidden Pit) through Odin, so I know it can be seen, but I get the thing to boot properly.
I'm assuming it is a locked bootloader issue.
Are there any solutions?
Successfully flashed Roto-JME-Full-v4.tar but still black screen
Successfully flashed Roto-JME-Full-v4.tar but still black screen
My issue, for any who are interested, was a burnt out component on the main board.
It was repaired under warranty.
Took a week here in Melbourne, Australia.
1. Can you specify which component?
2. Does it have anything to do with the flashing?
I have to admit I was afraid to go into any detail about flashing the Tab with the repairer in case it voided my warranty.
I wouldn't have thought i'd blow a main board using Odin!?
Part numbers on the repair docket are:
1 x A/S ASSY-PBA MAIN(COMM) GT_P1000
1 x A/S ASSY-PBA MAIN(AUTL.) GT-P1000T
This probably doesn't help though, as these look like labour codes.
Personally I dont think it was ODIN that burnt out the component... It would have to just be a bung component in tab... Either that or your USB is doing something weird with voltage, don't think so though because usually that just fries EVERYTHING...
Had it happen to a HTC Jam once, big flash onscreen, shutdown and wouldn't start up again... I really liked that phone at the time, brought tears to my eyes...
search on the forums for "Telstra rom galaxy tab" to find a "backup" of the telstra rom in case needed again...
SO you say you had a black screen? Where you able to see the Samsung logo and get into clockwork? Cause I can do all of that, but no matter what I flash, nothing will work.
I just want to go back to stock before I started screwing around :'(
No, my screen was totally dead!
