for those who don't have facebook:
Motorola Europe : We're pleased to announce that Milestone will receive a free upgrade to Android 2.2
(FroYo) in Europe with an initial roll-out
beginning at the end of this year. For
other software updates please check our software update site:
https://supportforums.motorola.com/community/manager/softwareupgrades
this is ridiculous. why SO LATE? droid 2 already has froyo. droid 1 already has froyo. what. what happend to the milestone? the rest of the world is waiting for its update..
motorola is such a garbage company i swear, after under a year, flagship products lose most of its software support (as it they don't care much about updating outdated phones...)
worst of all they lock down the bootloader so you can't even upgrade via roms..
disgusting.
but i am surprised they are having an update. i really was doubting one to come.
what do you expect? Motorola rides on its success in the US. Nothing more. The fact that it is an American company allows it to suck on Verizon left tit and get millions of ads for them.
The reason Motorola stayed afloat for the past few years was carriers were dumb enough to roll out RaZr after razr for 3 years straight while the rest of the world went on to nice featurephones and smartphones. When they got caught with their pants down, they relied on Verizon to bail them out with the DROID.
Other than the Milestone, Moto sells crap worldwide. Who really buys the Backflip and stuff? You can keep making CDMA phones, but 80 million people is a small market Motorola. Ignore the billions outside wanting a good GSM device, and you just shot yourself in the foot.
Meanwhile, as much as we hate on Apple, at least gambling on AT&T allowed it to go worldwide with GSM phones. Dumb Motorola is dumb.
So true, so short sighted of Motorola, I have to said milestone has to be my very last moto phone. Sometime you just have to learn thing the hard way. Seeing our counterpart droid having all the fun with custom rom and rapid update of android os. If this goes on i doubt even android can save them from disappear from the mobile scene again.
Guys, please continue discussion in the main Froyo thread, no need to start a new one.

Glad to know
They should be!
They are going down..................
They are starting to rott at this very moment!
Yeah the latest comments from Cupertino always hit the I'm With Adobe FB group and we laughed hysterically when this one came around.
Denial, much?
You guys crack me up, Are " you " in denial much ?
Apple makes ONE phone yes ONe, One, oNe, yes 1 phone. In the 1Q they cornered 7 percent of the market with a year old phone. With one phone. How many Android phones are there ?
Even though everyone knows the new 4G is coming out in June, they still sold 7% of the market, with ONE phone . How many Nexus One's did Google sell ? 7% of the market ? No !.....How many Eris' did HTC sell ? 7% of the market ? Hero's , MyTouches, Desires, Incredibles ? Not even with Verzion " giving " them away 2 for 1. ( The giveaway phones were added into the survey of course)
Seriously, Apple has sold 50 million iPhones, does anyone not in denial, really think that Motorola is going to sell 50 million Droids ?
Apple is really quaking. Wake me after the 4G comes out and Verizon stops having to giveaway phones to get people to buy them, and then see if the numbers change.
Or better yet wake me when Google sells 50 million Nexus Ones,
As much as we hate it, he's right. One phone on one carrier that's almost one year old makes 7% of the marketshare with a new one already known to come out. Their are soooo many Windows Mobile and Android phones on several different carriers, even if they did sell as much or come close to that ammount, Apple still has it beat with one phone, one carrier, one year old when everyone knew a new one was being released! I by no means even have one bit of likeness (is it even a word) for Apple but they are successful. It's just a fad like everything else. Eventually their will be something newer and better,

If Google was arrogant and conceited enough to put all their eggs in one basket, I'm sure they'd be outselling the iPhone right about now. The novelty is over. As novelty fades, functionality takes over (see Nintendo's recent drop in sales for more information). But the reality is that Google isn't dumb enough to monopolize the hardware and instead spreads their OS across multiple hardware platforms. Even Microsoft knows this. That being said, expect a continued increase in Android dominance.
Apple's desire to control the public and the market in general has negative side effects. As much as I hate Apple, they could DOUBLE their profits if they released their OS to PCs. Instead, they'd rather control the market and eventually face tons of monopoly lawsuits in the future, eventually forcing them to comply with the public desire.
It's sad when Apple fanboys don't get it. Saying that they did that with one phone, one OS, on one carrier means absolutely nothing. The proof is in numbers. You can't say that if they released it on many different hardware units on many carriers then they would dominate. Why? Because they didn't do it. It's not their strategy. And thus, because they chose so, they have now been lapped. I still have yet to make sense of why Apple defends their exclusive contract with AT&T. They could easily triple their profits if they came out with a CDMA version (yet their exclusive contract goes to 2012).
And talk all you want about 4G but most people have no idea what they are talking about when it comes to the next generation. AT&T 4G is at least a year out. AT&T is next releasing a 3G+ expansion, but even that will be behind (and sometimes relying on) T-Mobile's 3G+ network. Sprint claims to have 4G ready (even though all 4G tests in the US show similar speeds to 3G+), but only in a few markets. CDMA carriers will be ready for 4G roll-out beyond the top 10 metros in 2012. But leave it to Apple fanboys to think 4G (maturing in 2012) is months away, especially since they also seem to think HTML5 is months away (2022 for maturity).
You're definitely right. Apple sold ONE phone. ONE PHONE. And took 7% of the market. That's definitely amazing. Think about what they could do if they sold 10 phones! You're absolutely right. Think about it. But not too much, because they were dumb enough not to. And now, they have been lapped. Oops. I guess we now know the part of the body responsible for long-term marketing and consumer satisfaction is actually located in the liver (a part Jobs recently traded out).
Hypotheticals can't be used as an argument. The iPhone could have very well sold 4 times as much as Android and Windows phones combined, if they marketed different phones and different carriers. But they didn't. And so they lose. Unfortunately, Apple and their fanboys won't learn the lesson that's pretty obvious to everyone else.
Sure, it's easy to sell 50 million toys compared to classy high tech devices!

hahaha, a long article attempting to claim closed systems are better. Nice. Considering Google is the leading company when it comes to push updates (balanced nicely without saying "F U" to their customers). Software and OTA updates are still relatively new in the mobile field. Even Windows Mobile 6.5 has a Windows Update function that has never been used! Google pushed multitouch OTA. Who else has done that? Android will continue to gain steam as they cater to developers (Oops, Apple dropped the ball on that one). They will gain steam as Android becomes the popular technology device to purchase, that also includes the ability to do things for less money.
I'm pretty confident in Google. I have a Windows Mobile phone, so I'm not necessarily against seeing different versions of an OS floating around as a bad thing. If you're Android phone doesn't have the ability to update to the latest OS, then go out and buy another one that does. Apple fanboys purchase updated hardware for less of a difference.
It's a shame for all Apple fanboys. It's like Yankee fans dealing with a losing season by talking about pennants from 1923 (like anyone cares about 1923).
(at least we can agree that we hate the Yankees, denco7 )

This is really good news for Microsoft and for WP7. In the article they made mention of Apple's IPhone4 sales of 1.7M in 3days. I don't believe the comparison is justified considering people know what the Iphone was before it launched.
I believe WP7 will do very in 2011 considering over 18000 developers have signed on to build apps for this new platform.
So we have 4200 Apps in 2months and counting on WP Marketplace. Android does not even boast of these numbers when it first launched. It took Google's Android OS about 7-8months to reach those numbers.
See article >>> http://www.slashgear.com/over-1-5m-windows-phone-7-sales-in-first-6-weeks-confirms-microsoft-21120510/
I read it as manufacturers' sales to retailers.
That means you can sell 1.5 million phones but they might all be sitting on shelves in shops and store rooms.
Manufacturer sells to a retailer, I believe that's a sale. It doesnt matter when the phone gets to an end consumer. A sale is a sale.
I like the optimism but these figures don't show traction.
I'm sure that will come provided we get the fabled updates early next year.

In addition, need I remind you that we are claiming 104apps daily, but this is certain to grow as the months go by. Currently Andriod boasts about 300 daily while Apple boasts about 1000. But this all happens with time.
Like what you said, the updates will give it a boost as well as Verizon and Sprint announced to be involved with the phone as well this coming January to March.
I am just optimistic and I want to see a stronger competition.
I am just wondering how much room for growth android has, especially considering it has a business model that leaves many users with buyer's remorse just months after buying a new phone and being stuck with it for the contract? With the iPhone, you know they will release something better the following year, but with android, they could release something better a month or 2 later and you wish you would have waited. I'm just curious as to how long they can do this before android customers get tired of it. It seems like they would rather develop a new phone instead of developing updates to their existing phone, and for me personally, I'm growing tired of that. I've been on android for over 3 years and this is my 5th android device. I've seen the process over and over. A new customer is happy with their phone for a month or 2, then something better comes out and they wish they would have waited, and to top it off, they make you wait months upon months before they give your device an update.
Don't get me wrong, I love android and all, but the manufacturers and cell providers are ruining it. They are really making Apple look right (rrrrrrgggghhhhh) in not allowing the cell providers to have any control in it, and instead keeping control themselves. I hate for apple to look right, but what are the % of iPhone owners unhappy with their devices within 3 months compared with Android owners. I do understand many iPhone owners have been brainwashed to be happy with their phone, but the industry puts android owners through a bunch of nonsense. Personally, I think the manufacturers should only release 2 devices per year, one high end device, and one low end for people who cannot afford the high end, then work on updating the devices. Motorola failed horrible in 2011 with that, with releasing the Razr so soon after the Bionic. Now that their sales are slumping, hopefully they will wake up. I don't think Google buying them will change much unless Google replaces their management team. Sad to say, but my days on android may be winding down if the industry can't come up with a real plan to keep their customers happy with their purchase for longer than 3-4 months.

I agree with you 100%... I also experienced buyers remorse after buying the bionic wishing I had waited for the Razr. I may look into getting and apple device if things don't change with the new devices coming out every few months...

No offence, but I feel you just need to be happy with the phone you have. There is no need to have the next latest and greatest for whatever reason. Do your research, make a decision on a phone you want and stick with it. All phones will have their shortcomings. You just have to chose what 'phone quirks' you can accept.
As far as how far can android go? Think of how far technology and development have come in the past ten years. Now, think of the next ten to twenty years.
I feel android systems are only limited by the people who develop the OS's, ROM's, apps, etc. That is the main reason for open source. The freedom to choose. iPones are nice for the person who wants to stay with a system that remains confined to parameters set by one group of dev's with no user choice of change.
It is your choice: Move on to the confines of Apple, or accept your android choice and make it the best phone you can tailored to you.

You both have really good points but all it comes down to is money. If they can put something just a little nicer 2 months down the road for people will want it then there you go people will want it and buy and thetes no money in there pocket.st least we can customize are droids.

That is what companies are counting on. They do the market research to find what the consumers want. Then they develop and market the "latest and greatest" next generation phone knowing the these folks will lay down their cash for this new phone. People are not satisfied with what they've got. It's always about "beating the Jones's" next door. Or gotta have the same as my friends have, or need (want) the newest one, etc. Never satisfied.

I'm pretty satisfied with my bionic. There's nothing on Verizon I would want over it except maybe the rezound. The Razr or GNEX don't really excite me any.

Did anyone else come across this today and feel at all "not forgotten" by Moto for once?'
http://www.mobileburn.com/20436/new...es-soon-100-credit-for-non-upgradeable-phones
What about non US people who have a droid 3... ?
Also: can't get updated?? If hash can get 512mb ducati/kernel stuff for D3 you're not telling me motorola can't.
That may not be a bad thing.
not forgotten? how about forgotten and abused. (unless of course you spend good money with us again to replace a phone you shouldnt have to)
so you release a phone. in less than 6 months you release its successor. then you fail to provide any support or updates. you leave it off the ics upgrade path.
then you come out with another phone less than a year later, and offer $100 off? screw you moto.
sorry we completely screwed you on your prior purchase, but please buy another of our phones. it has what yours should have. no thanks.
the only way moto would get a positive point in my book is if they kept the promise to unlock the D3 bootloader, which we all know will never ever happen.

I wonder how the 100 dollar credit will work. I know it will only work on Moto phones.
If it's for an upgrade at a Verizon store, it's worthless. I would lose my unlimited contract.
If it's for an upgrade at wholesale, it's a better than nothing, but I wouldn't likely go for it (unless they have an unlocked kickass phone coming out in the next 3 months).
If it's a 100 dollar upgrade from any store, including a used one on E-bay, I would actually consider it.
Until then, 250 for a used Galaxy Nexus, is very tempting.

Well Motorola/Verizon have to add all of the bloatware on top so it would probably not run the smoothest. Stock GB with all of its bloatware struggles with RAM. I have Android ICS x86 with Gapps in Virtualbox and set the RAM to the total amount that the Droid 3 reports ~375MB. ICS has quite a bit more free RAM than my stock GB which has all bloatware frozen.
As far as the $100 upgrade offer, the Droid 3 is still going for over $100 on ebay used but that may change by next year. The Razr M does look pretty nice, I can't stand the big screen phones that are coming out and the Razr M manages to pack a 4.3" screen with smaller dimensions than the Droid 3. If they come out with a keyboard version it would be tempting.

$100 off is completely worthless. If I want to upgrade now in the middle of a contract cycle Verizon lists a Droid 4 for $549 so even at $100 off its still $449 and I'm way better off just waiting another year for my next contract renewal. The only way it helps me is if I can file away that discount to be used in September of 2013.
We were never in the pipeline for ICS let alone Jellybean. This is the "carrot before the horse" trick. Not even well played, Moto is dead in the water. Nexus is the future of Android. Still love my brick though.
I feel like Moto realized that they just might be able to squeeze a little bit more money out of us. Sort of a "who else is there to exploit?" kind of thing. Not sure I like it better.
I was talking with a friend the other day who is also tech savvy, and he said his only worry about the Moto X was the questionable future of Motorola. Obviously if they were to go away, we would stop getting updates. This seems a little unlikely though given they just started manufacturing phones under google, doesn't it?

They still sell well on Verizon, and now that they have a presence on multiple carriers I don't think they're going to be going away anytime soon. We will know for sure if someone would release some sales numbers on the Moto X. All I can think of is it has been out for over a month now and no price drops yet!

It is always a possibility. Google however is a long term investment, nobody was expecting motorola to become the new apple as soon as google took ownership. However as time goes by it is going to be harder to get rid of motorola.
You gotta look at how much other stuff Motorola makes; ever been arrested, got any military/government associates? Motorola Mobility has a parent with VERY deep pockets and the parent makes its longest green off of software that's why Nexus devices are priced so low. Google will let Moto spend what it needs like the 500 million it spent on advertising.

I wouldn't worry about the future of Motorola as far as their mobility products go. I am a manager at a relatively busy AT&T store and they have been selling well. It's not a galaxy so the massive marketing done by Samsung does outdo Moto as far as awareness goes, but their "lazy phone" and "moto maker" ad campaign is certainly effective. Every employee in the store is looking to acquire one, and being on company lines we don't receive upgrades, we must purchase them at cost. So if multiple knowledgeable people in sales are looking to put down around ~$500 for a phone, you can say with certainty it is a good phone. Google wouldn't make such a large purchase to merely throw away or disband shortly after. Motorola with Google is here to stay.
