I bought a slightly used Nexus One, the guy said it's rooted, well I am new to Android, just trashed my iPhone.
Anyways my OS seems slow at times, I have Froyo on it FRF91, but I think that it's a rather instable custom ROM how do I know if it's the original Google ROM?
I rather have the original Google ROM also because I like my phone to be able to get OTA updates.
If this is a Custom ROM, how do I get the OEM ROM back on my Nexus One?
Thank you all
If you go to About Phone in the settings menu it will normally have an abnormal name in the Kernel Version. What does yours say?

Even better, download and install any one of many screenshot apps. Take a screenshot of your About screen, and post it here?!
DroCap2 is my fave.
Tried drocap2 it didn't safe the screenshots where it said it did my kernel is:

You have an old version of Enomther's TheOfficial ROM (which is an excellent ROM, I happen to use it).
Flash its latest version (thread in Development section), and if the launcher (desktop) speed is what's bothering you - install LauncherPro. This ROM is probably one of the most stable custom ROMs out there, if not the most stable of them.

I love Enomther's roms and would highly recommend you to upgrade to the newest version.
Glad to hear it's a good ROM it's not often but sometimes when closing an app it takes about 30 seconds till i can do anything else.
How do I upgrade to the newest ROM? I went to the webiste of Enomther and it says something about Radio update also I like the stock theme will that stay on my phone?
1) It's definitely not a ROM problem. When installing his new ROM, wipe EVERYTHING - data and cache, and install apps one by one until you find the offender.
2) Flash his non-themed version and you'll get a stock look.
3) Check your baseband version in the same place you've checked kernel. If it says *U_4.06* or *U_5.08* then you don't need to flash the radio, if not - go to Nexus Wiki / Radios and look there.
Thanks a lot I will try it today.
Just did the update also installed the HTC 720p camera update.
Now it says:
Baseband version: 5.08.00.04
Kernel Version: [email protected] #1
Build number: FRF91
is that the right thing?
Thank you so much for all the hints.
Yes, you have the latest. See if the newer radio works well for you, and if it doesn't - try flashing the 4.06 version.

Sorry if this question has been asked before. I did a search but could not find anything so it may be a matter of how I worded my search. I am currently running Cyanogen 4.2.5. I upgraded to CM4.2.7, but decided to go back to CM4.2.5 so that I could continue to use a theme that I really liked. So my question is, is it bad to go backwards with roms? I have found a theme that I really want to try, but it was created for a much older Cyanogen rom. It was actually created for CM4.0.4. Is this considered a bad thing with the G1? Mods feel free to move this thread if the Q&A section is the wrong place.
My specs
G1/Dream
CM4.2.5
NabzHero theme
Haykuro's Danger SPL
DRC83 build
Moving backwards as far as ROM's go isn't harmful if that's what you mean by "is it bad".
If the theme hasn't been updated since 4.0.4 it will not be compatible. The build has changed from the ground up since then.
Thanks for the quick reply. Let me make sure I understand you correctly. If the theme I found was made for Cyanogen 4.0.4 and I flash the Cyanogen 4.0.4 Rom it still wont work because the build is different? By build do you mean the fact that I'm on DRC83 is the reason it wont work?
Thanks
Contact the maker of the theme and ask them to remake it as a Metamorph theme. Then it should be good forever.
I liked NabzHero too, but updates were kinda non existent. Enoch is similar, updates with in hours of the new CM version and is available via the CM updater.
Wish Enoch would change the tab for the drawer though...I don't like the way it looks.
Off to pm Enoch...
Simple answer: No, it's not harmful, bad, or wrong to go back and use an older version of a ROM. But, if you're using an old ROM, don't be surprised if something you find here that says it works on Cyanogen won't work--it may be intended only for the latest version.
The build is fundamentally different since 4.0.4, but you can still go back and use it. But, you may have to do a wipe from recovery before you flash it. Just try flashing 4.0.4 over 4.2.7.1, and if you get errors, reboot recovery, do a full wipe, and flash 4.0.4 again.
Hello,
I'm running the latest stable version of cyanogen 5.0.7, which is the last, i think.
And i'm having trouble with my APN settings. I want to perform a clean wipe and revert to a google ROM to see if I can get the APN settings to work on my G1 with that. Is this possible without actually breaking the phone?
I don't think it'd be downgrading as the latest Google ROM is 2.2 and 5.0.7 comes up as 2.1 on my phone.
If it's safe, could someone tell me how?
from what i understand u basically wanna go back stock so if thats then heres a link
although its been a min since i did it this way but hope this helps
thanks for the reply.
according to this page, G1 only supports up to Android 1.6 in its official form?

You know, there might have been an actual REASON why you installed a cyanogen rom.... and it was probably because of the fact that HTC DREAM only has official images to 1.6!
Unless you were just installing cyanogen rom to make life difficult....?
how could installing cyanogenmod make life difficult when it has so many cool features. I can't even remember if android was even past a 1.6 release when i started using cyanogen. what was the point of your reply?
either way, i can't remember the reason why i installed cyanogen. could have just been purely for the sake of modding.
Hello everyone,
I'm new on this board, because I just got my Milestone today.
I had a HTC Kaiser with Android Froyo on it..
So, I don't have any idea about the upgrading process under a Milestone, and I have some questions :
1. Could I go back to the original Motorola's factory ROM ?
2. Is there an original Motorola's Froyo 2.2 upgrade? (my phone said it's already up to date)
3. I don't want to lose any feature.. Is there a good Froyo build without issues?
4. Is the upgrade a bigger risk than flashing a HTC ?
Thanks a lot for your answers, and I'm happy to join this Milestone community, what seems to be active!
1) It's a sticky on the top of this forum.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=696845
2) Yes and no. Whilst it hasn't officially been released, Team G.O.T managed to and release a BETA version of the 2.2.1 kernal.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=811221
3) V1 had battery issues where a reset was in-order to stop battery drain. V2 is pretty new and some users have reported reboots.
4) No, if anything, less.
Also, wrong forum;

Hi zebra363 you're welcome!
1. Yes, just make a Nandroid Backup using OpenRecovery 1.46 and save this on your PC. (It's safe)
2. For now, we haven't a Froyo Rom Shipped, yet. This will be relased on Q1 of 2011. Your phone is up to date to Android 2.1 (Eclair because it is a Motorola official rom).
In my case, i suggest you TheFroyoMod v2.2.0 or Cyanogen Port, but you have to test to know what rom you is better for you.
3. You will be very impressed with Froyo builds here. The dev's are very very good.
4. Every upgrade is a risk, but just follow the process and everything will be ok
I was a Kaiser user too (good times) but i was using Warbyte's rom ( Android 1.6, because it was more stable than froyo, maybe HW question)
Hope this help you guy!
Thanks for everything, guys!!
I just bought my Milestone on eBay from USA, my build is SHOLS_U2_02.31.0,
but there are 12 versions with the same name! How could I know which version is exactly mine?
Do I have to change the kernel (from 2.6.29 to 2.6.32) in order to upgrade to Froyo, or is it included in the .sbf package?
MarceloTorres, do you have some issues with TheFroyoMod or Cyanogen, in comparison with Motorola's Eclair build?
And thanks, again!

1-
You are using the 2.31 SBF which is a stock Eclair ROM. Some regions have SLIGHLY newer SBFs and have a few more bug fixes than 2.31. But nothing major at all.
2- An SBF includes EVERYTHING unless it was messed with. This means kernel, programs, recovery, baseband software (controls radios, etc)
An example of a "modified" SBF would be somebody that merges a different recovery with different drivers, recoveries, etc. The GOT SBF does this. It is a Beta Motorola build that was merged with a vulnerable recovery.
3- You usually don't need to mess with kernel files when flashing a ROM. The room dev or "cooker" (loose definitions, depends on the skill and mods made) takes care of this. This is ESPECIALLY true on our phone because you CANNOT mix and match kernels and ROMs. Motorola locks the bootloader to the kernel. So it is NOT possible to write a customer kernel and/or use different versions than the ones provided by MOT. This is why the GOT leak was so important. We obtained a new kernel and other "Motorola" files. The devs then went to work porting existing projects (Cyanogen, etc) to the Milestones. This could only be done previously by various hacks and sidesteps that lead to many issues.
4- By now, the CYANOGEN version is still a beta, but VERY stable. I don't have more issues than when I had eclair.
Remaining major bugs (ONLY FOR SOME, I don't experience ANY of this and have been on Cyanogen for my work phone for 3 months).
a) Battery drain/charge -> I get a full day battery (8-10 hours) with major usage. But some people still complain of drain, discharges, etc.
b) Wifi using WPA2/TKIP on some routers (works fine for me, Juniper router)
c) Battery charge (not full). There is a "trick for this (see cyanogen thread) but it does nothing for me...battery charges to full each time.
Like I said, your mileage may vary. But between overclocking and undervolting and having froyo, I am happier with CM6 than stock.
Some people stick with stock (I would too if my phone drained in 4 hours).
The only thing you need to worry about are (high level instructions, please see details in CM6 thread initial post).
1) Installing OpenRecovery (I recommend the Androidiani)
2) installing correct baseband (the CM6 ROM defaults to Europe). This can be done from an Androidiani sub menu
3) Installing CM6
4) Install Google Apps (to re-obtain market, gmail, etc)
If you don't like it. Either restore a Nandroid backup or re-flash the correct SBF for your region/provider using RSD lite.
Caz666, thanks A LOT for your awesome answer! You really took a big time to write me a definitely perfect answer So, I will say a BIG THANKS!
For a first try, I used the G.O.T. Open-Recovery, because I found it in this tutorial that I followed : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=698059
And I flashed the G.O.T Android 2.2.1, in its central-europe version..
It works well, but it seems to be slower, and there's only 65 Mb free RAM
I will try to flash CyanogenMod, and I hope to get more free RAM..
The App2SD feature is essential for me, because I like to install a lot of applications to test them all..
I have Serendipity 6.4 installed and do not have any problems other than the battery life is not that good. Maybe 10 hours with casual use,
A friend told me to change to GingerBread is this something I should do? is there any reason for changing?
If so which ROM would you suggest? Do I need to also flash the radio?
Its all personal choice, if your good were you are then stay with it.
(How i took on the gb roms) If you do want something newer i would try cm7/miui first since you dont have to flash boot loaders and then if you don't like them try some of the Samsung based gb rom that need boot loaders. And dont let someone force a rom on you
radios come with most rom, if your phone dosen't like them try a different one.
just throwing my 2 cents in
I have been happy with Serendipity but would like to stay updated too.
I have updated the Kernel and the ROM before. I assume I need to update the radio too is that a 3rd component? How does it get installed?
Imo, over been on gingerbread rims for a while and to me, continuum 6.1 is the best, serendipity 7 was jumpy for me. However I recently switched backed to continuum 4.3 because I missed the Colored sansation theme so much

Every rom comes with a kernel and modem. They don't come separately
Kernel If you wanna change up more you can flash a different kernel and see which has better performance (or you like more).
Modems (radios) it dosent hurt to try out new ones, but the modem that comes with a rom is generally all around modem that works well with most phones. The modem thread is the top post on the development section it will tell you more
Only you can say what a better rom for your device would be. Test and see. That's the beauty of it. If you don't like it, or just want to try something different you, you can.

Hello!
Im new to android story so please excuse my stupid questions.
I would like to install the barest version of gingerbread on my phone. Where to find it? Im not clear if stock mod is what i have on my phone now (original) or is it android without the preinstalled apps that i cant uninstall? I Would like the version without any preinstalled apps.
And since im meddling with my phone, what do you think is the best kernel to use with bare gingerbread?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2198341
Gingerbread is Android 2.3. The S Advance has Android 4.1.2 available for it (AKA Jellybean). Follow the above guide to upgrade to Jellybean, and if you want you can also install a custom kernel or ROM.
Stock ROM Gingerbread 2.3.6

Stock Rom is a System Rom which comes preinstalled in your particular android device when you buy it. Stock Rom is preinstalled by the manufacturer of that particular device such as Samsung, Nokia, Sony etc.
If you have Gingerbread 2.3.6 just do a factory reset and from Settings > Application Manager > force stop unwanted apps.
What you want is unclear in your post. What I could realize from your writing that you want a fresh Gingerbread to flash your device.
You can download official Gingerbread 2.3.6 from here. Choose OS version 2.3.6
where do u live? what is the official release for your device there?

Thank you for your replies people.
What I want is to install fresh gingerbread, but some kind of bare version, non samsungs version like i have now. Without preinstalled apps that i cant uninstall. Is that even possible?
What im asking is how is such bare version called and where to find it? and since im doing that i thought i could upgrade kernel but i m new to whole meddling with android thing so i thought i could ask which kernel is good to use with this version of gingerbread?
I live in croatia. There is no croatian version on the page above, besides, those are all samsung versions, like the original on my phone, right?
By bare version, I'm guessing you mean like stock android version like the nexus have. Unfortunately for this device, we don't have the stock android firmware. For GB, even the custom roms you found here is based on stock samsung firmware. So, there will be some samsung apps preinstalled in the custom rom.
If you upgrade to Jellybean 4.1.2, you can try the latest CM 10.1 nightlies (although it is not recommended for newbies, as it is still test builds but has gotten to a pretty stable version). Cyanogen (CM) roms are built from source and it is very similar to stock android interface.

Thanks. Thats what i wanted to know.
I ended up on this forum becouse i wanted to install new cyanogen, but after some reading here it seems that GB is still better option in terms of battery and performance. So i concluded that best bet would be gingerbread without the bloatware. Maybe ill try some GB based rom.
Anyway, i hope this information will be useful to someone else also. Or delete the thread if thats the practice on this forum.
One last question. Im pretty sure i know the answer but better be safe. If I root my phone, i will be able to unistall all the apps that were preinstalled that i cant uninstall now?

Yes, you can. You're granted with superuser access by rooting your phone. So you will be able to remove any app and play with your device anyway you want. :good:
Rooting Gingerbread is a bit tricky for newbies. Follow the guide in the following link
