For offline browsing? I download the mapnik_us pack and have it stored on the SD according to instructions but andnav doesn't seem to be using them and I have no clue how to force it to do so. It is marked in the options as the default. I'm trying to get some offline apps I can poke around on (I don't need routing) and perhaps give me my GPS location on said maps and andnav would be fine if it would display the damn maps. Perhaps I need to create my own maps for the area? I saw that is possible. Any suggestions or alternatives? Pretty please
There's an application that is able to create custom offline maps for andnav2. See TrekBuddy Atlas Creator.
Andnav2 only supports offline use for map-sources that allow such use. That does unfortunately not include google-maps. Oterwise andnav just calculates which map-tile(s) it needs to display and grabs them from the sdcard if they are there, if not it has to get them from a server. For all openstreetmap-variants it will keep downloaded tiles indefinitely. It's left up to the user to clean out the storage-space if necessary.
Maps are store on the sdcard in /sdcard/andnav2/tiles. Here you find directories for the different map-sources. Some examples are:
cloudmade
cyclemap
mapnik
openpistemap
osmarender
At the next level there are directories for the various zoom-levels (resolutions) numbered from 0 upwards.
The map-creator will create an appropriate tilepack for the chosen area and resolutions from a choice of map-sources. Although it strictly speaking is a breach of the AUP it is actually possible to grab map-tiles from google and store them on the phone in one of the mentioned directories. I grabbed google's topo (terrain) maps for my local area and placed them in the openpistemap directory which otherwise is a type of map that is irrelevant to my area/use, and that works very well for my bike/hiking trips.
I know its in Beta but too many force close crashes for me...
Plus the postcode db is too incomplete. ( and I know its because its costs a lot for the data)

. Since I don't know for certain if any of the us mapnik tiles that i downloaded, it's likely that I'm going to have to create them as you mentioned, which is fine. I just find it odd that nothing was displAyed regardless of zoom level even when I had the program set to use the maptiles. At least this way Ican do what you did since I do a lot of biking as well.

Me too, I do biking and would love to have an off data plan option for on the back roads kind of thing. Tried doing the andnav 2 and made maps with the buddy utility but couldn't figure out how to get things going on the device. Any tips would be welcome.

If you copy a tile from the wikipage of andnav, you've got to make sure you delete the _benelux, _us, _manhattan,... in the mapname starting with "mapnik"
For example if the map is called "mapnik_us" rename it to "mapnik". Everything works fine out here with the Benelux tile (although extra mapping is always welcome)
if you've got more than one tile installed, change the one you don't use at that time back to "mapnik_us" and the on you will use to "mapnik".
hope it helps
I tried AndNav2 and it did not really work for me. My problem was that every time I tried to set a desination it seemed to work but the would always try to route me back to my home address. I might try it again another day when a few more of these bugs are fixed but at the moment using Google Maps is better.
Update for AndNav2 In US?
A brief update since I kept stumbling on this thread.
Andnav2 isn't available via Market in the US and the current group at code.google.com/p/andnav/ isn't posting the .apk yet.
I looked, but couldn't find any APK, so pulled the source and built it. Hopefully it'll save some of you the effort. AndNav2 version 0.8.8.2.1 is attached.
A US server isn't available in this build, but I wanted andnav2 for when I travel and don't have data coverage (in Europe) so hopefully it'll work well for that
Where is your attachment?
I posted the binary here andnav2-download.blogspot.com

My wife is traveling and I wish to be able to locate her. She's gotten lost twice already and she's traveling for SEVERAL hours from Indian to Minnesota.
She has an AT&T Epix with GPS integrated.
Is there software that I can install on my AT&T Tilt that will allow me to locate her? Her GPS is working, but the Google Maps is a little hard for her to track.
Thanks for your help.
have you tried altenative..
have you tried an alternative or checked this out ,( if so, ignore my suggestions.) as a backup ,if you cannot find what you are looking for ?
the name is the same as your heading..."GPS LOACATION..BY HIGHWAY "
of xda ,found under development and hacking, or try link...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=549517
example ..your wife could send you sms /email with link , which is just case of selecting, email or sms option on the software tab,
when you receive email , click on relevant link ,and you can see her position on google..? ( you dont have to do no tracking ? it pinpoints you with , street name and no ..)
i find this "gps location application ", very handy (works perfect on my hd )
hope this helps
Google maps with Latitude ?
gpsed
Try gpsed, http://gpsed.com/downloads. Free version allows tracking in as little as 1 minute incrememts. Installs on her phone, she activates and you follow along on any web browser. Works well.
Thanks for the reply. I don't know what happened. I've got my notifications set to INSTANT notifications and I didn't know anyone replied.
Well, she's traveling now and we don't have the option of installing the program. We have AT&T Navigator on her phone, and it's SUPPOSED to be able to SHARE the location, but the AT&T reps who PUSHED this product on us HAVE NO CLUE as to how to make it happen. And tech support hasn't returned my call.
I also want to install a program on my son's phone so that I can track his whereabouts WITHOUT his knowledge as well.
I thought there were programs out there that would allow that.
gpstoday.. www.geoterrestrial.com .. awsome app and will tell you down to the address of where she is.. and you can see her on a map all for free.. you will need to have internet access on the phone though..

Thanks Chris. I'll take a look at it now. My wife and I both have data plans. Is there something to install on EACH phone, or just MY phone since I'm wanting to track her?
Thanks for your help.
i like oldies music, so i listen to kearth 101. now im not sure all the ways that are possible to do this, but what i usually do when im not in my car, is just go to the website. unfortunately i just tried it and it says i need flash =/
how would i go about getting my tunes on my g1? i know theres those streaming apps, like i think its called streamfurious, but i dont know how to find the station on that.
also about how muh battery would doing this kill anyway?
thanks!
well the flash thing can be answered now. if u really want the music u could flash any hero rom as the browser has flash9.
nahh i dont wanna risk a brick.. i already got cyanogens 4.0.4 and stuff.. you know the basics. i dont think im ready/up to/ have time for the hero roms
Do you know their web site address
use streamfurious search option and use the call sign of the station you want then pick "tune in" if your using edge it may take a minute or two to show up on the app.
hope this helps.
K-earth 101 is listed in streamfurious pro. Under CBS stations>Los Angeles.
It'll eat a lot of data if used hour after hour though.

There's no need to use Streamfurious Pro. Here's how you can get it into normal Streamfurious:
1. Install StreamFurious (free) on your phone.
2. Open your phone browser and browse to http://www.thestreamcenter.com/search.asp?name=k-earth
3. Tap on one of the two "listen live" links on the right side. (Try the 64kb one first if your signal is generally good).
4. Choose StreamFurious to handle the intent.
5. The station should then be added into your SF list.
Edit: By the way why not give public radio a try? Expand your mind and social awareness. KPCC is a pretty good station. It's already preprogrammed into SF's database.

it worked! takes FOREVER to load up, but once it gets going its awesome. thanks! and idk maybe i will give that public stuff a try, i'd rather just listen to music though lol
Yo use "Pandora" to stream music. Its definantly a 5 star app and works great on an EDGE connection. Trust me try it, nothing compares.
I can't, no matter what I do, get a decent offnetwork maps program to use with gps location. I had andnav2 working using trekbuddy tiles created in the andnav format and ever since I used the rom (not a cooked rom) I can't seem to do anything correctly. Andnav2 will no longer recognize the tiles I create for it...for some reason the gps consistently, no matter which program I am using, believes I am still at home when I not. I can't find a decent media player that allows me to fastforward aside from MXzing lite but that is constantly trying to use the gps, which is fine if I disable it. My main problem though is the offline maps thing I mentioned above. I just can't get it to work, anymore. Is there ANYONE that is using an offline maps program that allows gps tracking? I don't care about turn by turn nav...I care about having offline maps that will show me my gps location and follow me; which I as I said worked when I first tried but I can't repeat what I've done and the only difference I can see is the new rom. I guess I'll wipe and try the old rom but if I can't use the new rom and have andnav2 work (or any GPS app that will show accurate data) then I give up and will sell the phone to some one on this board....seriously, this shouldn't be this much of a headache when it wasn't before.
CoPilot 8 Live - Perfect - as good if not better than TomTom and much better value for money. Also will move devices with you provided you are still on Android and ask CoPilot to change the codes to link with new device (They did this for me no worries after I swapped my handset) No network needed, and maps stay on SD card. Worth the money.

I 2nd Copilot! IT is really good, and what the android desperatly needed!
can I download entire maptiles for the US and use them offline (no wifi no data plan) and have the gps pin point my location on the offline maps? As I said, andnav was doing this (for free) but now I can't get it to cooperate at all and the developer has abandoned the project. I'm also looking for a decent media player and I thought mxzing would be it until I found that it autoloads at start and constantly accessing the gps for some reason.
I 3rd co-pilot.
A good media player is Meridian Evolve.
I am using Rmaps and I made my own maps using TrekBuddy Atlas Creator.
It is working great and I have the GPS following me very precisely.
But of course it is not a navigation system like CoPilot. It is just an offline map and it is free.
I would go for http://www.sygic.com/index.php/en/android.html when i have some money
You can of course try out CoPilot as with any software from the market an d get an immediate refund if you don't like within 24 hours. Recent copilot update has great improvements including qwerty keyboard!!
I'd say try it out and if its not doing what you want, sell your android. we won't cry.....
I'd love to get Sygic when they include Malaysia into the maps.
IMHO Tomtom is still the best there is.
However both CoPilot 8 and nDrive are both very very good alternatives and both are available for Android from what I've seen/heard.
Tom Tom is good, but you pay a premium for a little extra over the rest. CoPilot IMO is just as good but 1/3 of the price. go figure.
And yes you download the entire maptile pack and use it offline.
Thanks for the suggestions....with a huge sigh of relief after weeks of testing and search, rmaps and meridian are the solutions I needed and thanks to this thread I now have some good alternatives for turn by turn. I have no idea how I missed these two apps in my hours of searching the market but whatever, my torture is over now
Copilot 8 live is availiable directly from the Android maket ...

I think the one decent person you spoke to at ALK must have left; I've tried to contact them to do this numerous times now and have simply given up on them ever calling / emailing me back. I would not reccomend the product if you expect any kind of customer service from them.
A quick google search shows I'm not the only one fed up with them for precisely this reason, moreover, I don't believe they make it clear at the outset that you cannot transfer the product between devices without doing through them - it's made extremely clear that's the case in the minmo version but not the android one
wher can i dl the capilot application??
thx
google for copilot, or search in the market.
I have a Sharepoint site so I can create collaboration sites super duper easy.
I'm not sure if we have an app list yet....but here's one.
http://sp.texultant.apps4rent.info/MoSo/NC/Lists/App List/AllItems.aspx
It's wide open, anybody can anonymously add and edit posts....so be nice....If it gets abused I'll have to lock it down and require logins....you don't want that hassle do you?
Perhaps it may be a good idea to include the most recent version number tested of each app?

Could someone check whether USA today, NY Times, Twitter, Facebook and GV apks work on a rooted nook color. Planning on ordering one and rooting.
Yes, I know it wont make phone calls, but want to see if it will notify of texts.
Also, I see people installing Google Maps. Can it be used to find your location?
Thanks in advance.
Search through this thread to see if anyone has gotten them to work. Its over in the Nook Color Android Development forum.
