Any developers need a phone? - Touch CDMA Android Development

Well I can't thank the vogue android community enough. You extended the life of my phone by over a year - and got me hooked on a great phone OS.
I've recently upgraded to a Samsung Galaxy S (not my first choice, but the best phone I could get on Bell - the only carrier in my city), and I now have a leftover vogue. I thought it might be of some use to a developer here and I'm willing to ship it out free of charge if any of them need it.
Just let me know if you'd like it (post or pmsg).
Thanks

Nice I think I'm going to be getting the galaxy s right away as well. It'll be a nice upgrade from my milestone I've moved on to.
Beautiful phone

Interested in getting a tilt, i have some questions though

Hello all. This phone mainly got my attention because i read up that it can run android OS.
I am currently using a tmobile g1. the only reason i'm giving it up because tmobile won't let me use my cheap data plan with it. They want me to upgrade to an expensive one. (I had t-zones unlimited working on iphone for awhile)
So i decided to look into an at&t phone and hope that it can be unlocked and i can set up my t-zones internet on it as i did on the iphone (also from at&t)
Here are my questions:
1) Is it easy to unlock the htc tilt? Or do i get it unlocked from someone else?
2) Once loaded, does Android os have all its features on the HTC tilt?
3) Will I be able to set up EDGE with tmobile WHILE on android? (and will it work? lol)
Thanks everyone, i really appreciate ur help guys

Wow.
This is so silly on so many levels, but the overriding thing is this.. Android on the Tilt is a cute hack. No more than that. You gotta boot WM first, then Android. You have to kludge around to get voice and/or data to work in Android. It's not as stable as Android is natively. Some of the hardware doesn't work....
just.. no...
Yes, here's what I used: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=375583
http://www.androidonhtc.com/kaiser/port_status, the camera is the only piece of hardware that isn't working at all, most others have partial or full capability. Wi-Fi is still experimental, and GPS is kind of tempermental.
Yes, once SIM unlocked, you should be able to set up and use APN's through config.txt/startup.txt, and Android itself.
However, keep in mind that Android is still not fully functional or stable, and you must boot Windows Mobile in order to run the Android bootloader. Android is still kind of beta, and may stay that way for a while. I don't currently think I could run Android full time on my device without any issues. So that's some stuff you need to think about before you buy a Kaiser just for running Android. In your situation, I personally wouldn't.
Dave
Yes, it is easy to unlock...
And jsut stick with WM, it just works better right now

I thought your response to his question was pretty silly..its a hack like u said so of course it isnt going to work with flying colors just yet..though im sure it's much better than you picture in your head. There even more advantages of booting from SD card we can run the hero rom nearly as much as hero itself. Plus more androids phone will support our qvga screen in the future.
Well i dont really like winmobile, maybe cuz i'v never really used it. i always thought it was for business ppl. anyway, thanks for ur help. can anyone recommend another phone?

Dude, at some point you are going to have to bite the bullet, so to speak. With the increased capabilities of the phones to download greater amouts of info faster and faster, the carrier companies are going to charge or structure their data packages according to the amount of data you access as opposed to the time you spend " online ".
If you like android , then you need to stick with a phone the runs it natively, like your G1. To want to get rid of your G1, to buy a non android phone and then hack android on to it, is kind of " silly " despite what ajclai08 says and how " cool " it is to run Android on a phone that is not meant to run it.
You can spend the next month trying to fudge the phone you want with the OS you want , with a data package that violates your carrier's TOS, but in the end it " is " going to cost you and why be stuck with a phone and OS that you are unhappy with.

Time for some Imagio unlocking and roms!

I just bought an Imagio and will have it tomorrow. We need to get this forum rollin
im a big supporter of NFSFAN's roms after using his rom on my VZW TP and I hope he decides to whip something up for our phones !
Did anyone decide to give the mobile tv a shot? Looks like the kickstand on this phone was made for it
agree with the custom roms, man what do we need to get this goin? im really lookin foward to the coverflow on the new version of tf3d, oh and mobile tv works really well just needs more variety...
I just got mine this morning and am already having flash anxiety. I am used to flash my own cooked omnia roms with close to nothing on them. there is so much stuff on this phone that i don't want, thanks VZW.
So if we are able to get a Hard spl unlock we should be able to use any topaz kitchen as long as we use our OEM right?

LOL I know what you mean. I haven't even finished cleaning up from unboxing, don't have all my traditional apps on and tested yet and I stop by to see what's cooking in the kitchens already!
I am looking forward to using the phone though. I already seems much better than my Touch Pro.
Ditto here, I just ordered the Imagio today, and already wanted to see what was going on with ROMs lol.
I am wondering if anyone has contacted cmonex on weather or not she has considered helping us out with the HSPL. I am getting my phone in the Morning and I really hope we dont have to wait long. I will be around to help out with what ever I can.

There is a HardSPL placeholder thread now.
tethering to laptop
Hey all! Anyone know if/how you can tether to a laptop for use as a modem.. Kinda need it..
Imagio can tether
Yup, works great tethered, just go get PdaNet from June Fabics dot com.
Lets, go.
We desperately need to kick it up a few notches. Although I love my imagio there are so many good devices coming out that we need software and features fast. We have an ass load of potential we need this hspl so desperately I hope its coming along. I will donate the hell out of good developers.
Some things I've been thinking of.
We need to make this bad boy use motion commands, implement g-trigger or something similar cooked in.
We need to implement TFLO 3D Build 1920 and tweak it to run fast.
We need the a rom that runs stock, with only tflo running, to be at less than 40% of resources.
We need to be able to read and use 32gb storage cards.

haha.. well said!! it's weird because i don't ever remember a hspl taking this long.. is it because there's something new with the imagio? like some new technology that nobody's worked with yet??
Well, according to another user somewhere that contacted HTC they said that it was a unique device to Verizon so it could be that some time is needed before they can get this one hacked.

Yeah, I'm sure!
Yes, we need it. But what we can do is waitting
Well the folks at pccgeeks have posted instructions to unlock the CDMA Touch Pro 2... My understanding is that the Imagio is a "variant" of the CDMA TP2... maybe we'll see a ROM and SIM unlock for the Imagio in the not too distant future.
I'm sure when sprint gets the diamond2 (whitestone) hspl will come very shortly after. Should be next month, thought it might be November 1st, but I haven't heard anything. But is guaranteed to be here within Q4 this year.
For the 18 millionth time, the Whitestone is not the Topaz (Diamond2)!

no. I realize that but according to phone arena and a local sprint rep their diamond 2 is the whitestone. so chill.

I have heard that she is working on it as we speak and should have something in a reasonably short time.

Diamond, should I?

Hello guys!
I've got nice price for my Desire, so I'm going to sell it. Since my Leo took a shower few weeks back it is dead. But, I've found a Diamond, not used. And the price is very low. About 1/3 of what I get for my Desire. BUT, I only want this if I can install Android on it.
I've found this (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=601751), does this realy work? If it does, I'm going to buy this in this week.
I've waiting for Evo, but since it is not available in my country (yet), I want to buy something "cheap" and use it when I wait for my Evo and then have it as my backup mobile.
Well, let me make the long short, does this phone with Android (If it is possible) work for everyday use? I've read that lots of "Force Close" pops up?
Thanks in advance
Lots of respect for XDANDROID ... I am using it (and continuously update to the newest build) ... but not as a productive system for daily use.
Two main reasons for me:
1. battery consumption improved but still ..
2. limited memory of the Diamond ...
You may go through the thread of XDANDROID to see further comments ...
BTW, there is also XDANDROID 2.2 out now (alpha though)
Cheers!

Hello! Thanks for your answer.
I've just found this:
http://www.androidonhtc.com/wiki/Port_Status
But I understand what you mean. I also forgot that this phone has no memory card slot (?) I've going to need this...
First off,I'm sorry about your Leo...May it rest in peace...
The Diamond is a really good phone and by far the most beautiful one that I have got my hands onto, but it's a 2 year old device. It was the top back in 2008,but now it's really...moderate!But why would you want to sell your Desire?Keep it until the Evo comes to your country(which is by the way...?) and then sell it!

I've also miss my Leo!
I know the Diamond, my girlfriend has it Yeah, it is old but this does not matter for me if I can install Android on it. The reason why I sell my Desire is cause I got very good price for it. I'm from Norway.
I've also saw that few hours ago HD2 booted with Linux, maybe I should get a new HD2 and use it with Android. That would be awsome! But this will take a long time tou...

For sure, I'm going to buy new. My point was that Android can't be far away from running on HD2
If you want Android I wouldn't recommend the HD2.Yes,it's one of the best out there and now there is an Android port, but such a port has been available for the Diamond and its compatibles for a very long time now and it's not usable for everyday use.No disrespect to the work that's being done,I really appreciate it and use it on my Diamond, but I have it as a backup phone so it doesn't really matter to me if it works flawlessly as I use my Hero everyday.Android on HD2 is in very early stages, not even open for anyone to try and I think it will be a long time before we see it working efficiently.

Maybe it takes longer may not, the thing is, I don't know when Evo wil be available in my country...

My friend I think that neither you nor I will get an Evo in our countries...It seems that smartphone companies are on a US-frenzy sort of thing and release all the good stuff there these days...What we get?One device in our market for every 10 devices in the American market...

oh
Going for HD2 then... :/ Diamond has 4GB internal memory, I need more then that

.. Is the milestone ... Outdated ?

i am about to buy a smartphone (for the first time since my dumbphone SE W595)
and i want something perfect that'll stay with me like 2 years or so
i checked all of the new phones (Desire + n1 + Galaxy S and millions!) and honestly even with all these teachy stuff and zippy processor .. i didn't like a phone more than the Milestone
Big screen + QWERTY keyboard + pretty good camera for a go-go price !
but .. it was released on the end of 2009 and have a 550MHz (though it can be overclocked anytime) and that locked bootloader (ugh!)
wat i want on a phone is 1-watch movies & videos , 2-loading my almost 5500 set of music in it 3- hardcore 3D gaming , 4-good camera , 5-QWERTY (regular teenager stuff) and Android !
is it really the right phone for me or i should wait for something better (e.g Milestone 2?) (as the international Droid 2) ?
Regards , Mike
I would wait, the milestone has been out for a while now and there should be some new models coming out soon. If I were you I would wait for a new qwerty android phone to be released.
I would also wait. The droid does sound like the perfect phone for you, but the thing is, all the stuff you really look forward to doing kills your battery. I have a rooted droid clocked at 1ghz. Battery life really isn't that great, but overall i sincerely love the phone.
I would wait, too...I have the Milestone, is a really great phone (as you said, big screen+QWERTY is just perfect) but buying it now is pointless, in my opinion. I would suggest to wait for new devices similar to the Milestone to come out and then make a choose.
And the camera isn't that great, really.
Thanks everyone
.. is there any great phones (or leaks) with QWERTYs in the next few weeks which are non-Motorola ? i mean is there any leaks ? (other than that ugly HTC Vision) ?
damn i wish we had a GSM version of HTC Incredible .. it's a perfect phone (only missing a keyboard though)
somebody told me girlfriends are like mobile phones, you only wish for a new and better one, as to what you have.
so there's nothing new about your dilemma.i'd suggest you go for it, because new would come but then it's price will delay or postpone you a prized possession. secondly, nowadays a mobile phone is more worthy if it it's most popular in hacking community, like Xperia X1, in my sane mind i'd never suggest this phone to anyone, but imagine ubuntu and android along with Winmo, the phone is a must have. And my dearest SE P1i.
Go for it, you'd never regret a moment of it am already looking for Xperia X1 and Milestone (second or even third hand).
yeah , your right .. but the thing is .. back in 2008 (when i only knew dumbphones and smartphones prices were a blast) i bought my beloved and now stolen SE w595 .. just a couple a days later , Here Comes SE w902 & samsung i8510 .. a better camera + bigger screen .. stuff
Honestly i felt like my new w595 was turned into bull****! i dont want that to happen next if i buy a milestone
but when i think about it .. it was out for a year .. is there really something new coming ? all the good damn phones comes to the US (droid incredible , samsung epic 4G) while leaving us lay in the dust
everytime i try to convinve myself to buy the milestone by saying (i'm just a teenager .. why would i need a 1GHz CPU and stuff like that ?) but honestly i just can't help it .. for god's sake the galaxy spica is faster than that !
beside that locked bootloader .. when i thought about it for like 2 minutes i say what's the joy having an android when you can't root it/install ROMs ? because back in the days when i had the w595 i used to change themes & flash menus like a maniac !
i've decided to wait for a non-Motorola device , i've taken myself a hour to think about it .. that's my decision .. Thanks everyone !
I literally just picked up the Milestone on Telus two days ago, and don't regret it. It's pretty sweet, and I don't see the Droid X or the Incredible coming (I assume you're in Canada, as you're looking at the Milestone..) any time soon up here.
With the customization and rooting available, it's a pretty sweet phone.
Just me though. Good luck with picking a phone.
The driod 2 is released any day now but I wonder how long we have to wait for a milestone 2
Edit: I bought my Milestone 2 weeks ago. And I love it.
it will outdated in term of operating system, currently we only get android 2.1 which everybody already has 2.2
and next time 3.0 released we can only bite our nail ^^
it will be soon!
Hi guys, actually i've more or less pretty decided to get the milestone already due to it's nice form factor and android, also pretty much i'd like to have a qwerty keyboard for a change.
I'm currently rocking a HD2, and i don't intend to sell it yet. But was interested in android after running froyo 2.2 and sense desire build on it. So i was like pretty much wanting to get an adroid device to play with and see how it goes. No suitable options in the marketplace for nexus 1 and it's way over my budget, i reckon i can get a milestone (brand new) over here in sg for around 550 Singapore Dollars, so i thought i get it! (TODAY, LOL)
So i thought i'd pop by xda for trusted opinions and rooting possibilities, and i'm faced with little support for the milestone as compared to the crazy HD2 forum, LOL. So i'm wondering is it possible to root my milestone? And what do you guys mean by bootloader locked? And why? Pardon me as i'm pretty new to android, had a g1 in the past, but didn't play much with it and sold it, now i'm back! Haha.
I'd appreciate any links to other sites for help and more info and prolly more support than what we're getting here? If you feel uneasy to post, you could pm me. Thanks!!
Any issues i must take note of with buying milestone? Since i read some had wifi and baseband issues, D-pad down button is bad etc. LOL. And the droid's back cover is loose, not sure about the milestone though. Plus is there really a huge difference in droid and milestone when it comes to development/rooting/flashing roms etc.?
The only difference i know of currently is one's CDMA the other's GSM and the droid doesn't support multi-touch natively until the updated the software as well as the droid has got fm radio?
Oh ya, there's no wireless teethering on milestone? Meaning my laptop uses my phone's network?!
Appreciate all advice!!
Sorry for uber long posts!

Man, it's really lacking in support for milestone over here at xda, or there's nothing to support at all? LOL. For the first time, i'm a little disappointed with xda. Hahahaha, i hope people could point me in the right direction for milestone news and tips etc. Anyways, heading to get it now!!
Quick answers:
- You can root the phone, as in, have access to modify the system at root level.
- A locked bootloader means you can't use any other kernels except those signed by Motorola themselves. We're all hoping for methods like 2ndboot and kexec to help us out here
- You can tether via USB,WiFi, or Bluetooth.
i have a Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 with windows mobile.. I originally wanted the Milestone but since i could get the X1 for half the price of the Milestone i decided to get it. I am now in the process of selling the X1 and getting the Milestone (probably next week)

Thanks. I went ahead and get it anyway. Haha. I'm hoping for more support and some flashing goodness soon! Plus 2.2 froyo!! Some issues or concerns i found so far. I realised that the device gets hot pretty easily and not normal kind of heat, rather at the area below the camera at the back when holding landscape. And in gmail app, you can never empty your trash permanently. This kinda sucks, as the trash always restore.

where did you get it for 550? I was at a starhub shop the other day and it wasn't even close to 550.
If you don't want to wait, there's always the Samsung Epic 4G or Galaxy S Pro, whatever it is called in your region. If you don't mind that there is no camera flash.

Are those phones even out yet ? Would you be able to install custom ROMs for them in the future?
The milestone looks better in my opinion.. (physically) but seeing how its got a locked bootloader... im afraid of buying a phone (with so many options at this day) that could be already stuck on its final OS version.
If only the Xperia X10 had a physical keyboard (i dont like the mini pro version) id probably buy it. I want an android phone with a physical keyboard not only for texting but also for emulators and the milestone seems the way to go ... as its about $420 too. (amazon)
I'm in the same boat as some of you. A former Xperia X1 user who got tired of flashing with ROMs that aren't stable and sluggish. I don't want to get an official ATT phone cause I am on the MediaNet unlimited plan and I like to tether to my laptop. I also like having a QWERTY keyboard and been wanting to try Andriod OS. Some questions:
1) What specifics should I look for to ensure I'm getting the Telus version of DROID and unlocked for AT&T to ensure 3G?
2) I saw recent news that there is no official support for Tethering or wifi router mode on DROID, but are there apps (even the Xperia X1 did).
3) Can anyone tell from just what's listed on Overstock and Amazon whether those phones will work on ATT 3G? Many thanks.
I already sold my X1, been using my old Samsung BLackjack 2....need new phone...SOON!

HP Touchpad or not

I have oportunity to buy new and very cheap HP Touchpad 16GB.
Here are my doubts:
1. I do not know at the moment how it goes with implementation of Android on it so any suggestion about this issue from you is welcome.
2. How good is WebOS for end users and also does it have any apps for kids like educational games and similar, and do i have to pay for them ???
3. Support of Qualcom 3g USB modem and it possibilities to connect via 3g network.
4. battery life experience under WebOS and Android.
i need help ASAP because offer is running out.

The answers to every one of those questions is in the forum and there are several threads with practically the same questions. Please take the time to learn to SEARCH for your answers. You will always learn more if you look for info yourself rather than it just being handed to you

All I will say is that you will love your TouchPad running ICS.

Here are my doubts:
1. I do not know at the moment how it goes with implementation of Android on it so any suggestion about this issue from you is welcome. The only issue remaining is the camera does not work
2. How good is WebOS for end users and also does it have any apps for kids like educational games and similar, and do i have to pay for them ??? I dont EVER boot to WebOS, I strictly use Android ICS
3. Support of Qualcom 3g USB modem and it possibilities to connect via 3g network. There is no internal hardware that will allow this, I don't know if there are any external products
4. battery life experience under WebOS and Android. I get great battery life on mine, I also have it on a Touchstone when I am not using it. Again I never use WebOS, so I have no experience.

I LOVE my TP(32Gig). I got a mine for a great price, and can't imagine I'd get much better for 4x the money of what I spent

My two cents;
If you like ICS and the 10 inch size the TP is great! I have a Kindle Fire running ICS which I really like but I find myself using the TP much more often. It is faster, smoother, and more storage.
WebOS is a really cool OS but the lack of apps pretty much ruins it for me, I never use it other than just messing around with it to learn more about it, I have very few apps for WebOS. If you want a wide selection of cheap and free apps for kids, Android has plenty of these.
No idea on the usb modem, but it tethers great to every mobile wifi hotspot (android phones) that I have tried.
Battery life is good if you ask me. Maybe not as good as my wife's Ipad 2 but I use the TP a lot more for video than her, which eats battery.
I like the TP so much I bought a second one so that we now have a tablet for every kid on road-trips, it's fantastic
I know about this suggestion, but as i said, i do not have much time because of offer. I peek a little around xda and see that ics is still not developed good, but ubuntu is available too. I already did rooting of my htc desire, runing miui, but this section is new. I think i'm going to buy this little thing and wait for good version of android.

If you say that ICS isn't developed enough then you still have a lot to read

I just bought a 32GB last week, but still haven't received it. I have questioned numerous sources and they say that the CM nightlies are reliable.

I can fortunately say that I have no issues running the unofficial nightlies with TWRP recovery and nightly differential updates

I think ICS runs great on it. I have not run into any problems that a quick search on xda didn't fix easily (and most of those were caused by me screwing with things just for fun that I didn't fully understand).
It works flawlessly enough that my kids (as young as 4) and wife (as tech savvy as the 4yr old) use it all the time and have never had a single problem. They are able to install and use all the apps they want and more.

I personally believe that if you don't give it a try, you'll be short changing yourself. There are a few VERY good ICS ROM's out there right now. The only reason I ever change ROM's at this point, is because I am a flash whore. The current ROM I am on, has NOTHING going wrong with it, aside from the camera not working yet(it is being worked on). That for me is a non-issue, but may be for others. I can honestly say that it is more solid than the ROM's I run in my phone.
