Lg Optimus 2x or iPhone 4 16GB?

Hi There.
I am wanting to upgrade from my Nokia 6500s, as the screen just happened to crack last week.
So should i get the O2x for £250 New
OR
Should i buy my friends iPhone 4 for £270 as he is looking to buy the 4s
Looking For some advice from owners of the O2x

Iphone= no customization+apple = lame
o2x has alot of faults but hopefully when nvidia release there drivers and we get a decent build of ICS those problems will be a thing of the past. But in the mean time there are alot of fun roms and kernels and various customizations you can do to make it very entertaining.
But if you don't like that stuff and don't mind apple **** then go get ripped off.

Well i have had a iPod Touch 3RD Gen, it was always Jailbroken, though am looking a change from the usual "Oh Look at this thing, its amazing, even though Android has already had it" But i do like how everything just works.
Though, having something that runs android would give me a change to mess around with things and tinker, which i like to do
Just need to make a decision before the 11th

The IPhone is a good fone and we wouldn't be where we are now if we didn't have the IPhone. That being said, I don't like IPhones as they are closed, too expensive, don't prevent wifi dropping (on standby) if your on a data allowance, over rated..
I work for O2 in the UK & all the time see the down falls compared to Android. I personally chose Android due to the open'ness and customization... The IPhones are smooth though but it all depends if your into making YOUR fone YOURS & Personal ;-).
I hate Blackberries more though lol as you either need to do a battery pull every 2 minutes or the Host Routing Table lol.
Its just my opinion but have a play with them both .

Thanks for the Feedback, its much appreciated.
I already know how iOS works and all, and seem too like the idea of android. will be sure to test out the O2x if i get it, to see if i like it

You will love it, its so much more customizable than any "i" device, seeing as you already have an ipad it makes no sense to get an iphone as well.
Try not to judge the o2x on it stock rom it kinda sucks, imediatly flash a custom rom and kernel and you'll have a blast it'll be fast and smooth but don't expect it to be aa smooth as the i devices remember android is an OS within an OS.

Plus we have both flash and html5 support apple rejecting flash had nothing to do with performance issues it was to do with itunes and other crap that's why i HATE apple and won't ever buy an apple product.

man, i owned the iphone4 and my brother have the 4s and my youngest have the gs2. honestly, they are realy jealous on my o2x, the speed, customization, stability, and the devs are very supportive.
go for o2x! cheaper than gs2 but i think gs2 is a little better. buy hey, i love my o2x!

Yeah, I'd personally go for an O2X too. But seeing that the other option is an IP4, I'd take the O2X hands down. The IP4 is going to get old real fast once the IP5 is released Q2 to Q3 this year.
While the O2X is scheduled for ICS Q2 of this year. (give or take 2 quarters) lol.
If... the option was between the IP4S and the O2X though, I'd have to choose IP4S.

I have a optimus 2x. Bought it some days ago. By use its amazing. I accept that its software has some glitches but who has not? And moreover when you get a good hardware you should not really worry of software, as you will get it , its a open source.
I like apple as a media source. You told you have a ipod touch. I think its more than enuf from apple. You can enjoy there OS there touch feel and the apps. But apple doesnt allow you to do much customizations. It doesnt five yoi the degree of freedom android gives. So i would siggest you. Go for optimus 2x rather than Iphone 4 because you already have a iox device ipodtouch.

It is always about your needs...
But I see one big problem with the iPhone 4 16GB – your stuck with these 16GB and from my personnel experience this isn’t really much. I ordered a 32GB SDHC the moment I ordered my LG P990 and it is almost full including the build in 8GB… I actually very tempted to try one of the 64GB SDXD cards available – will order one and try it when the prices come down little more.
And compared to an iPhone 4 the LG P990 should be faster – I have seen some tests on youtube – but don’t have a link handy right now – and these tests where actually with the stock browser on stock rom…and custom roms are even a lot faster.
The rest is about taste…
IMHO Android is more versatile and I like the UI concept more, but this is purely dependent on what you like.
My tip go to some store where you can actually touch the phone and play around with it a little – even though the LG P990 is on stock not as fast ass it could be, but you get a basic idea of the look and feel.
I made this comparison between iPhone 4, SG2, HTC Sensation and LG P990…now guess which phone won…

Yes, your are most probably right and that is why we should try to do better here - especially since many people around here will know the look and feel of the iPhone 4 too...
And as I wrote I personally like the UI concept of android more and he should try both before making that decision.
Speedwise the Optimus 2x should be a little faster – but not that much since I must admit the software of the iPhone is usually over all a little bit better optimized.
But IMHO the biggest con against any iPhone and also to the most recent Google phone is the lack of an SD-card slot – this is/would be a absolute no go for me…

if IP4 would had 4" screen i wouldnt even thinking.

Thanks everyone for the feedback, I think I might give it a chance, though i will have to order it from Amazon UK as there are no phone stores around my town that stock O2x's.
I also didn't post on an apple section as I know what the replys would be to buy the iPhone as 50%-70% of apple owners only buy apple products as they Have the fruit logo and defend it.
Just another thing to touch on, if I did get the O2x i wouldn't root it for approx. 6-8months in-case an issue would occur and therefore i would be able to use warranty. What is the Stock rom like? And is it Usable?
Rooting:
I would assume rooting is a bit like jail-breaking, just run a program and its done?
and flashing roms, you just put them on an SD card and flash using clockworkrecovery?

Rooting is not difficult, just as easy as jailbreaking the iOS devices. I sold my iPod touch 4th gen a few months ago and I know the differences between these products.
First of all, I want to remark that the optimus 2x still has a lot of issues. Random reboots, sleep of deaths, charging BSODs, memory leaking. These are very common issues which I experienced myself. Especially if you use the stock LG rom, make sure you remember this.
Most probably you won't void your warranty if you flash custom roms because you will be able to flash back to stock LG rom with kdz/smartflash methods.
If you are looking for a stable phone I honestly would not recommend the O2X at this moment. It is a nice phone with current CM7-kangs or modded kernel/modded stock rom, but the LG roms are real crap imo and you may still have problems even with xda roms.
Samsung for example has much better stock roms. You might look for the Galaxy R for example which looks great to me.
Nevertheless the o2x is really cheap for a dualcore phone with decent IPS screen. Real bang for the bucks. It's so much faster than my previous iPod Touch 4th gen. (Same processor as iPhone 4)
If you have no problems with claiming warranty if you have issues amd if you dont care to flash custom roms, the o2x could be a good choice.

[Q]What mods, roms, and OS's should I look into?

I will be getting a TouchPad in the next few days for around 100$, and I was wondering what kind of stuff I should look into if I just simply refuse to use it stock.
I have plenty of experience with Android Roms, and have done quite a number on my Nook Color, Milestone X (The non-Verizon Droid X), and my old HTC Hero.
But after browsing these forums and sub-forums a bit, I realized that there are just so many different choices when it comes to what your TouchPad is running.
I have seen Ubuntu and many different versions of linux, android, windows, and even just enhancing webOS.
What are the best choices and resources to get stared with? So I don't turn my new tablet into a cutting board.

As far as Android is concerned we have CM9...which is pretty awesome...most nightlies are very stable...they have all the main mods and features....then we have AOKP, which is a kang on CM9 and we have other similar roms..most of them are kanged from CM9....There is ClassicNerd rom, which is not kanged from CM9, its faster but less features...

Buddy, for all the tweaks and mods for Webos, read this guide it has links to webOS doctor and easy instructions on how to use it..

Is it a good idea? I'm dying to try out WebOS but at the same time, wanting to experience Android on a tablet. So this sounds like a perfect device.

with CM9/android, you get whole lot f functionality man. CM9/ICS on touchpad has most of the functionality except camera..and some audio issues...Once you go android, u might not go back to webos....

I highly recommend AOKP and ArchLinuxARM.

What's the difference between AOKP and CM 9? I've installed CM9 and I'm pretty amazed so far. Just the problem with the much, webcam, and some, sound issues but otherwise, I love it.

Insight on the Thrill

hey guys, I was hoping to get some help from some thrill users. I'm hoping I can get a little honesty here, I am doing research for a buddy on the thrill. I have checked out specs, and spec wise seems like a nice device. I just wanted some insight on state of this device, whether its a good purchase or not, i have found some nice deals on this device bare in mind im buying full price so i want to have a device that will have a little bit of longevity. here are some things i hope you guys can share some insight on:
reliability of device, hardware/software
development does it look good will there be ICS i didnt notice ics roms
any alarming things to know about the device before buying
known issues
i ask all this because the G2x for tmobile seems to be a nightmare, hoping this is a better device thanks for any help you guys can provide

I'm pretty happy with my Thrill, but I was disappointed in how long it took to get GB out for it. I'm not sure if we will ever see ICS. The camera is excellent, battery life is ok (I bought a 3500mAh battery and have to charge up nightly). The 3D is kind of a gimmick, but it does work well.
I found that it's much snappier with a custom ROM. I'm currently using Lestatious AcidHazard from the dev forum here. Both ADW and GoLauncher are much better than the default "LG Home" launcher.
Overall, not bad for my first Android phone. I upgraded from an iPhone 3GS and will never look back at Apple, but for my next one I may consider Samsung or HTC just because there seems to be a much larger developer community for their offerings.

Ill give you only my opinion based on my experience with this device. Can't speak for anyone else but I'm sure there might be some very diverse opinions about this device.
I feel the Thrill is the underdog in the current Gen of high powered devices. Kinda like if you perchased a low cost car because the price and function fit your needs. Then you discover it had a turbine engine that simply needed to be switched on and calibrated properly. Would be cool and fun although very unlikely. However the Thrill is often referred to as a sleeper. The hardwear is all there but the stock Rom is restrictive. With some patience and proper modification the Thrill is an awesome phone that can outperform many high priced phones and then some.
In most cases from what I have seen many people find a baseband they like, and a rom that works with the baseband, a few tweeks and bam nirvana. Currently the most common issues that I'm aware of are Ghost calls, Bluetooth instability and minor app bugs. We don't have a huge Dev team but the devs we got are darn good and have flat out showed us all what the Thrill is supposed to be.
If you have loaded any roms or rooted a phone then you will be capable of tweaking the Thrill as you like in about 1 day at the most. Do some further research on it first before you dive in so you are fully aware of what your getting in to.

coming from the HTC sensation the 3d agreed is fun to play with but a gimic super fast and honestly if the right tweeks were given then the phone would be right behind the sgs2 easily if not keep up the LG 3d Max launcher is what I'm using but it is slower easy fix by getting a launcher from the market I recommend Adw or go launcher the dev work is amazing but slow and the optimus 3d is the exact same phone and is on the official list to receive ics according to popular results on Google but looking at things it'll be years end before we see official ics custom ROM will show up first and more than likely soon since the drop for LG phones supposedly is second and 3rd quarter once agin popular Google results reviled this for me over all I do not regret the switch and believe this phone Will peak at ics but will stay alive for probably another year to a year 1/2 stability is decent but be sure to update to gingerbread as the phone really seems to shine afterwards

While I'm here asking I hate to be such a noob guys but I don't know much about this phone wanna be careful not to brick it. From what I can understand I have to flash the gb update from LG before flashing gb roms correct? All I did was root the phone and installed a 2.2 Rom to get it going however I couldn't get data working its on a prepaid plan for 50 dollars a month everything else seems to be functioning ok. I wanna get all my ducks in a row for tomorrow when I get more time to get him updated to gb. Any roms that are recommended and or kernels. Cm7 or official update what's working better thanks for any help guys I'm not usually such a noob I'm just use to htcs with s off and such or Samsung's and Odin. LG is like a whole nother animal

Lg update tool worked fine no issues I recommend a stock 2.2 ROM before update then work from there you'll love this phone AFTER you update though to avoid future questions on why you have no signal use an optimus 3d ROM to avoid alot of issues good luck and enjoy

I shall do a bit more reading before I update to gingerbread tomorrow, this phone is actually for my buddy I'm running with an amaze but I'm helping him out so he has a great phone glad to hear its a awesome device once updated.

I actually love this phone. It is really fast and the battery life is decent. The camera takes awesome pics and videos. About a month ago I was almost fed up with the phone and the dev on it but after flashing the Mokee ROM I fell in love with the Thrill all over again. If I had to choose a phone right I would pry choose the Note over this but then again most people would.

Pretty much the same situation for me. Also upgraded from a 3GS and I think this phone is awesome and a great first android for me. For the most stability on gingerbread, in my opinion, would be v21e. I flashed the promethius rom and kernel on top of it and my thrill is amazing.

Beta? and some rom questions

Okay so I plan on ordering a touchpad this week or so and I have some questions regarding the roms and their stability.
first of all, which roms do you reccomend and/or are the most stable?
Are there any roms in beta? the only one I know of is Miui
Is there a rom with microphone/camera support?
And finally, is an hp touchpad worth the upgrade from a Viewsonic Gtablet (if anyone else has used both and compared them)?

Firstly, you probably should have taken a moment to do a search - almost all of your questions have been asked many times before. However, to save you from the flame-bait and others who'll consider you a troll, I'll try and help you out a bit.
So, to answer your first question, the most stable would probably be the official CM9 Nightlies. To the best of my (personal and limited) knowledge, none have been promoted to official "beta" status, but then again, we went from an unofficial Alpha to Alpha2, to the nightlies. So that's probably your best bet for stability. I know from personal, anecdotal experience, that I haven't had a crash on my TP in weeks, and I would call it definitely stable. But that's just me.
Microphone support has been added into the repository, but the camera isn't as of yet. Which honestly doesn't bother too many people, unless they need to video chat. And if they need that, the nice thing about the TP is in about 5 minutes you can have it rebooted into WebOS, which has Skype native support, and you can chat from there. Then, do a quick reboot (about 2 mins or less), and you're back in Android.
As for the upgrade from the GTablet, I couldn't tell you. I know that I really enjoy my TP, and I like the way it looks and handles better than my father's Galaxy Tab 10.1, but that's just me. For the 200 bucks I paid for mine (including shipping to Canada), I can't say anything bad about it. It gets used daily, flashed daily, and it works like a hot damn all of the time. So yes, I suggest you get one, because it's an amazing piece of technology, AND it's in the process of getting an upgrade to Jellybean, so that's another plus in it's books (that a lot of other devices don't have yet).

Awaiting My Nexus 7, need some input

I was so excited to get my Nexus 7 a day early. It came today and I immediately started setting it up. Shortly after turning it on, the screen would do things on its own or just not respond to my touches. It did sometimes. Very disappointed. So RMA'd it and awaiting my replacement. (Anyone else hear of this?)
Anywho, while I'm waiting, time to get a plan. I have already downloaded the Nexus 7 Toolkit and plan to use that to get me rooted and a recovery. (Is this the most common method for N7 users?) Also, any input on a recovery? I've been using CWM since I started using Android, but it seems TWRP is getting a lot of attention.
Lastly, the dreaded ROM question. I currently run CM10 M2 on my Nexus S 4G and... eh. CM9 ran great, but been having alot of reboots and freezes on M2. I know it's not stable so I don't hold it against them.
What's everyone's favorite on the Nexus 7?
Things I look for in a ROM, stability and nice tweakable features. I don't OC, never will. I was eyeing up Paranoid Android, but not sure how stable it is. CM10 worries me only because of my experience with my phone so far, but I love CM based ROMs. I've never had much luck with AOKP. Am I missing any big names or great ROMs that I should consider besides Paranoid, CM10, or AOKP?

You know, its people like you that give xda a bad rep for being arrogant and unhelpful. This isn't a "best ROM" thread. I'm basically asking peoples opinions and experiences ofthe ROMs I listed and maybe some ROMs that are hidden gems .

Awesome, see that's the input I'm looking for. Why though? What's catching your eye? I seen on their thread that Paranoid isn't the most stable ROM, I wonder the reason for that. Only issues I've read about is people changing their DPI to something the N7 can't handle. What about recovery? CWM or TWRP?

Just my opinion but just try stock for a while. We already have the most up to date technology so why overclock? All games run well except Gameloft games and that's because they don't optimize for tegra processors. I don't change ROMs until the company stops supporting the newest updates.

Yeah. He's right... I'll get my 32GB N7 today, and the first thing I planned is not to root it... First of all to wait if some of those damage problems arrive (I'm lazy so I don't want to unroot when something's wrong..)... And I'm very happy with stock... Android really grows... And I taught myself to live with the quick settings... So, I see no need. I don't really need colored stuff, or idk.
I recommend you to just use stock for a while and when you don't like it, you can still root it ^^ idk how it arrives (locked or unlocked) but you may want to unlock the bootloader first, before really setting it up. So when you going to root it, you won't lose data ^^

Yea, that was another idea. If I stay stock, I'll root it then stay stock. Get a feel for the tablet ways before deciding to go with a custom ROM, which looks like is gonna be paranoid so far... but yea, like I said, def no over clocking. That quad core the n7 is packing will be sweet enough. Any recs on which recovery? Are there any big differences that might sway my decision to one?

personally im going to go TWRP on my nexus 7. my SGS3 has it; its an evolution of CWM imho

I've been enjoying my time on the linaro builds of aokp. Nice and snappy, the best kernel I've used to far has to be Trinity IMO, you can tweak CPU and GPU settings. I just wish it would run in tablet mode, still waiting on a patch for 4.2. As for recovery I've always been a cwm man but recently switched to Twrp, it has a nice interface and lots of options. Oh and BTW the nexus 7 toolkit is AWESOME, within 30 minutes of unpacking my N7 I had it unlocked, rooted, recovery, and super usered. And it does this with one click, you sit back and it does the rest.....that is after you make it install the adb drivers for you.

I like that twrp is all touch. Any other big advantages? As far as CPU and GPU settings, meh... lol that and I would like something running 4.2 and something that isn't gonna seem like I'm using a 7" phone lol
