Is it me or is it slowing down

I haven't seen much on roms lately. All the one's out here aren't stable either. We only have a couple fully working roms and none of them are being update. If I get a new phone any suggestions on what it should be to take advantage of the most fully functional roms?

I found Liberty ROM to be quite stable, and while I don't want to jinx it, I've been running Maverick 4.0 for a day or so and it seems great!
If the bootloader ever gets unlocked, it will open up more kernel dev options (for the genius' out there!) which could open up more/better ROM possibilities for us (fingers crossed).
I don't think I'll be upgrading to another phone until a new physical keyboard model comes out. And hopefully it's quad-core with at least a gig of RAM. (512mb on my XT860 has been killing me) ;D

Unfortunately I dont think the kernel will ever be unlocked on our phones... that's Motorola for you.

Ever since they switched to the nightlies and stopped posting new beta's on here It slowed down, IMO.
I'm happy with Mavrom 4.0 I guess, but would've loved to see hashcode etc. focussing on getting video on ICS, rather than adding features etc. Other ROM makers could've tried that. Who cares about advanced settings when you can't even record a video?

Google is going to probably sell Motorola hardware section to Huawei and keep the core just as legal requirements. Also, they said they are not going to interfere with Motorola decisions on their products. Google only bought Motorola for their parents, nothing more, nothing less.

Exactly ... but I don't want this to be a Motorola bash... even tho its easy to do... lol... so for now I would like to see a list of roms that are fully functional. I'm on liberty and I keep going back to that just because everything works... what other roms are in this category. And I agree that a extra features aren't important till a fully or close to fully completely working roms is in place. What's the point of all the bells and whistles if you can't even use the basic functions of a phone.. don't get me wrong now. I love trying new roms but it becomes a downer when you get one that has cool extras but you end up going back to a working rom for taking video or watching Netflix .... even if your on safestrap to go back to that functional rom. And the other question is if I change phones what would be a good phone to go to just for rom purposes ...

The problem iswith the hardware codes and drivers. Every phone probably has this problem with ics. They add more features cause this is almost impossible. The attic has a really good developer support. I would definitely go back yo it if I could but I had nothing but problems with mine. Anyone know how to make a rom? I wanna get into it.

I assume you mean Atrix instead of attic?

The real issue to all of the problems is the bootloader. When you can customize the kernel to fit your rom you pretty much take care of any problems. Not to say there aren't roms with custom kernels that don't have issues .... there are but thats due to other things. Programming or incompatibly issues. All of our roms are franken roms held together by bungee cords and duct tape. The devs do a great job with what they have at hand so when time comes for them to build a rom on a phone with a unlocked bootloader, I don't blame them.. much more freedom and the ability to create awesome roms the way they want. All the stable roms we have are just built around the original with some cleaning up and a splash of color... I wonder what it feels like to know when you pick a rom no matter what it is and you know its going to work and the only reason you don't stick with it is because you don't like the way it looks or it doesn't have a extra you want... how sweet.

How does jellybean run on this lil guy

Thinking of selling my gs3 to get some bills handled and was impressed at how cheap this phone was and the development for it. I had this phone a year ago before there was even ICS for it. I understand its not going to perform like my gs3 but bow buttery smooth is.

I prefer cm10linero optimized odex version with blood kernel and feel it is silky smooth. There is so many ROMs out that it is a candy store with something for every taste. 4.1.2 version is standards now with 4.2 in works. Bang for bucks this cell has been very good and beyond reliable to me.

take it from someone who also came from the s3...this phone isnt to bad considering what it is....obviously the camera isnt as good the screen size sucks ass but with cm,pa,aokp etc and an oc kernel its tolerable

Is there any one working on touch wiz 5.0 for ICS/jellybean? Touch wiz on gingerbread sucks but since ICS+ wiz has really become nice practical minus the stupid zoom in and out by swyiping the side...really Samsung?

Pretty much what I was going to say right to the last word (except I haven't owned an S3).

I should also throw in the fact that we have very little RAM, and it makes multitasking a pain in the ass at times, especially on ICS and JB. Or impossible at times, rather... A few small apps are usually fine, but that's about the limit. I've played with the minfree's to no end, adjusted the low-memory killer over and over to find a sweet spot, but I don't think one even exists here.
Basically what it comes down to is: If you want multitasking, expect lag/freezes. If you want performance, expect your apps to start over every time you switch back. Also expect to keep a task killer on deck at all times.
I'm currently running SmoothieJB with Tim1928's kernel and it's been a fantastic combo. Fast, stable, (relatively) decent multitasking and great battery life. It's one of the best experiences I've had on this phone, so much that I almost don't want to touch anything else in fear of losing what I've got... But deep inside, I'm a flashaholic. I will succumb to my temptations sooner or later. :laugh:

I've heard that CM10 can have trouble with 3rd party camera aps, such as bank check deposit etc. Anyone found that? If so what is the best option for that? I haven't flashed to JB yet mainly because I don't want to lose that checking account option.

That has been brought up many times in past. My beat suggestion for a work around though may seem excessive would be to make a nandroid of a full functioning cm9 and use it for checking and use the cm10 or 10.1 as your daily. I know it isn't the answer liked but it will suffice.

Ok, so I have a dumb question. How easy is it to switch back and forth between CM10 and CM9? Would this mean flashing the ROM all the time? Since I've never done any ROM flash, being a total noob, I haven't experienced one flash much less trying to switch back and forth all the time.

Well if you had a nandroid of both, you could just restore either whenever you wanted to, provided that you make a nandroid every time you change something.

Hmmmm. Cumbersome just to have check deposit. I'll have to think on this for a while. I suppose it takes a few minutes each time: make nandroid in CM 10, flash CM 9, deposit check, flash CM 10 and do this for each check. I don't do checks very often so it may still be worthwhile.
Do you happen to know if this is an issue being addressed and just might be fixed for, say, a CM11 release?

I have a question. Why cant we (flashaholics) settle down on one rom?. I my self am very content with my sonic rom, Nottach xposed, and other mods but am always looking for something bigger better newer. Why? Why I ask. Its a freakin phone. Make phone calls, text, surf the net and watch videos. Why do we constantly keep looking for other roms to flash even though the very rom we are on works perfectly and fills our needs. Im just wondering because I see the same people in various rom threads always flashing different roms. Two or 3 a week. Look. Im not saying its bad, I'm just trying to understand the need to look for the something better all the time. I my self am looking at other roms wondering how they are when I think the end result would be the same just minor differences. Just a thought.

I don't know if it's a need for something better at all - as most roms and etc are not so much better than one another and more so just different and bring a different experience.
I'd say it's just more of a hobby that people get in to because it's fun. Playing around with different themes, tweaking kernels for performance than battery life, switching from AOSP features to TW ones, playing with that roms unique feature than playing with another's, setting up a new home screen setup, etc etc.
Some people like collecting stamps, some people like tweaking and upgrading their car, and we just like pimping out our phone and trying new things!

Addiction for sure. Plus alot of people are trying to find their "ideal" android experience. As stock falls way short. I remember the samsung captivate I had, daily flashing!! For me now I just want a bug free setup so I dont flash like I used to. Usually only flash when I notice the phone is acting up or I mess something up ...

Not saying you're "wrong" because this is all opinion, but from my perspective, Jelly Bean hits the mark big time. In the nearly five years of Android, since rooting the G1, this is the first time I wasn't in a major hurry to get on a custom ROM. For me it's not the "Stock vs. Custom" aspect that drives me, but rather that stock unrooted keeps so many of the existing capabilities on lockdown. This phone and this OS kept me happy for a good minute.
That said, like others have mentioned, I love to tinker and there is no question that many custom ROMs improve on the Stock experience, even the JB stock experience.
But after the EVO, I kind of settled into comfortable favorites. Ran Calkulin's ROM for about 6 months and then MIUI (which is one ROM, but new every week) from when it first ported through the EVO3D and up until I got the SGSII. Flashed a few ROMs and then settled on the BluKuban and am now running that on my SGSIV.
I guess my flashing bug was pretty much tamed by 2010, but I definitely understand people who are flashoholics. I was one and it was like having a new phone every week. That was the appeal for me anyway.

Compared to the many here, I would say I'm definitely not a "flashaholic." I do, however, enjoy tinkering with my phone very much and "modding" my phone has now overtaken the modding needs I used to have for my car.
I like trying out new kernels, mods, and apps that enhance the useability, speed, reliability, performance, and battery longevity of my phone. I ask myself sometimes why I spend so much time doing this stuff and for me, it's for several reasons:
1. For me, smartphones are still relatively new (got my first smartphone last year in May, a S2) and therefore exciting. Like the media says, "A mini computer that fits inside your pocket." It's just so cool~!
2. Before I got into modding my car (and my wifey's and my mom's), I was really into the modifying and overclocking (watercooling) PC scene. Smartphones have rekindled my passion for technology and my nerdy side reemerged. When I was becoming bored and feeling kinda indifferent about the slowdown in the PC industry, the rise & dominance of smartphones have reignited my passion to learn something new and be excited again after each breakthrough in mobile technology.
3. I like to keep my phone up-to-date with the newest and greatest from Google and the many amazing developers.

Ah I feel you pain.. Seems to me you are like me and trying to chase that perfect rom. I had a galaxy Nexus for sprint and hated waiting for my roms to be ported. I would also check xda and when i see the thread title updated i got excited and downloaded immediately. I never backed up w/ apps like TB so always had to start fresh and honestly my gnex was never setup for easy access.(like when i need directions for maps it has ten pop ups slowing me down). Then i went on to mods kernels and others and was always wiping and flashing. I stuck to cm 10.1 because its self nightly updater. I was so excited with my S4 that i didn't think of rooting it till day 2. I wanted to root, run stock and install apps like cerebrus, af wall, and adaway but im coming on to day 20 and i haven't rooted it. I know if i root my phone will run slower and if it bugs, blame the root then i'll never feel happy and start flashing roms then get stuck in the loop again. NO! I almost considered getting an iphone 5 just so i can stop but didn't. Samsung is a big company and right now their rom is working for me. Im now hooked on cases. lol
Long story short,(incase you dont want to read ^)
You're not alone. Galaxy S4 is a damn good phone but like every other device, it has flaws. Try to get use to stock because even if "perfectRom" is released you'll find yourself going back buggy roms.
Or you can have someone password block xda and fight with the moderators and go cold turkey for 60 days. I know they say 30 but lets be safe.

all of the above is correct, if you just want a phone, get a iphone, if you want to play with things, roms/themes etc, then this is the phone, I personally did not buy a $500 phone to make a call with.

Roms etc. to check out?

Howdy.
Took advantage of the latest google offer to get myself a Nexus 4 - my Razr i just had literally no development and a lot of apps wouldn't even run due to x86 architecture! Arggh!
So anyway, mine is arriving soon (hopefully) and I'd like some pointers on what to check out first - Cyanogen is always worth considering of course
I mainly look for a good kernal to save me power but not skimp out on horse power when needed - a good deep sleep/idle function
Also a lightweight rom which is very snappy, I'm sure I'll find some roms to love based on the sheer amount of development on this section! Send your suggestions in and I'll be sure to check them out! :good::good::good:

First, Franco kernel is amazing ! make sure to set governor CPU on "interactive" and GPU on "ondemand".
MBQ_'s Vanir is by far the snappiest i'v experienced (and I have flashed dem roms ).
Me personally, I find Stock + Franco to work the best.

Awesome I'll make sure to check it out! Obviously each rom is going to be good for different things but having never owned a nexus device I'm usually romming to get rid of bloatware from motorola/HTC etc. so I suppose the advantages are usually additional features for nexus devices

Exactly Best rom the has a lot of features, while maintaining preformance, stability and battery life is deffinatly Paranoid Android. They do amazing innovation in the Android field. Im flashing latest PA build as we speak.

Put it this way, i went from HTC desire where I could change roms weekly - finally settling on oxygen which was totally stock android and great
Then Razr i - it took 7 months or something to even get jelly bean, 0 roms and now we finally have like two to choose from? They are good in terms of i'm not a developer and i appreciate what they do, but both are riddled with bugs

So I guess my nexus ( which will hopefully arrive later) will be getting PA.
Do I unlock the bootloader with "fastboot OEM unlock" to flash custom recoveries etc? I come from a HTC phone so forgive if this question sounds stupid to you

I've never really liked PA because of the different modes (phone, phablet, tablet, etc) would make if hard to modify everything easily for me (but thats cause i dont like phablet or tablet modes, prefer stock phone style)... Im using crDroid and it runs great with purified kernel. Ive tried Vanir and that one also was pretty good
You should do what i did, flash a few and test them out. They all have different variations of features...

I love customizing everything, so from the beginning I was on AOKP. Loved it but i think it was a little heavier than necessary..
after that I used Xylon - ( now Uxylon) which was awesome, smooth and fast, plenty of features.. but its still 4.2.2, so I had to leave it behind eventually.
Currently I'm on Slim Rom Beta, 4.3 and I'm loving it. So give it a try!

Rocking Purity & AK kernel today and loving it

Most of the roms are good in their own way...
if you want speed or customization...

You can also check a thread in general about a poll on which rom people are using. i mean, just based from that, you can have the number of nexus 4 users, what the best rom in common people use (you wouldn't know your best if you hadn't tried the others right?) and just a few mods also you can use that will give you what you want. Just have fun in the mako forum and all the best mate :good:

Rasbeanjelly and PSX are great if you are looking for a pure and latest AOSP experience.

Got the phone, unlocked, flashed latest pa and xposed. I'm very satisfied so far. My HTC one s didn't come close to this at all.

Confessions of a flashoholic...

I've been on the Android side of things for almost three years and this is the most content I've ever been with a phone. Back in my iPhone days I had to jailbreak and add everything that the phone didn't have. Then on my Atrix 2, loved the hardware, hated motoblur. I had very short stint with the Galaxy Nexus, but the radios and terrible battery life were deal-breakers for me. Then I got the S3, rooted and rom straight out the box. I got addicted to flashing the latest and greatest (cause TW is the worst) constantly checking xda. Now the Nexus 5 and kit kat have totally made me realize I don't have to flash anymore. I've tried a few roms just to nandroid back to stock and I'm fine with that. Now I can enjoy my device and not borderline obsess over making sure it works, or some random bug pops up. I know I can't be the only one that feels like this...

Thanks, kit Kat is the bomb is. The only thing I wish Google would fix is the auto brightness.

Could not agree with you more. I was in the same boat, would wait patiently for the jailbreak and search cydia for apps that made my phone my own. Then I was always a few versions behind cause I didn't want to break my jailbreak. Then with the One I was super content with the GE rom I was running and I still keep an eye on it. But, I was always trying to make my phone like a Nexus, so why not just get that! I did and could dnot be happier with stock KitKat, well it is rooted and has a custom recovery just in case.

Exactly. Best phone experience to date. It's the small stuff, like the new dialer, the steady improvement of Google Now and the new launcher. I can finally enjoy my phone and not try to improve my it every few days...

100% agree. I was the same way, constantly flashing and dealing with bugs, left my Nexus stock and no looking back.

1st phone I've owned that is not rooted/tweaked/modded and no plans to. No need! Coming from Eris, Inc, Bionic, GNex, GS3, GS4, N4, MotoX < N5!

Same here. I recently went back to stock ROM on my N5 and really feel no need to change apart from the occasional kernel tinkering. With Gravity Box I feel everything a custom ROM has to offer is there. When I was on my prevoius Samsung devices, I would always install a custom AOSP rom straight away.

That is what apps are for. Try LUX.

Kangakat with his xposed gravity box. Stock, battery life is great. Zero bugs and all the useful mods from aosp. I've been flashing since my g1 and this is the first time I have all I need.

Aside from root and recovery, I'm running stock. But I know it's just a matter of time before I break down.

I agree too. When I got my S3, I rooted it and installed CM even before the first boot up. But with the nexus 5, my first nexus phone, I have discovered that rooted stock with gravitybox xposed module is all I need.

I basically feel the same way, although i DID install a custom ROM. KangaKat.... so it's still 90% stock... just with some extra bonuses. Was on stock since i got mine (ordered launch day and got a few days later).... so about a month and a half. Just installed KangaKat a few days ago. Kinda debating if i want to keep it, though... or go back to my stock backup.... or if i want to try out another rom. Kinda tempted to try Omni...

This is only my 3rd android device but everytime I end up rooting and spending hours on end exploring stuff.. its fun, but wastes precious time. Haven't installed a rom this time at least and don't plan to.

Same here. Been about a month now on stock, with no urge to install latest cm nightly. Of course, gravity box provides the quick fix I need to get me through the day .

I got addicted to flashing the latest and greatest (cause TW is the worst) constantly checking xda. Now the Nexus 5 and kit kat have totally made me realize I don't have to flash anymore. I've tried a few roms just to nandroid back to stock and I'm fine with that. Now I can enjoy my device and not borderline obsess over making sure it works, or some random bug pops up. I know I can't be the only one that feels like this...

I'm right there with you. I'm totally happy with the stock rom on this phone. I'll probably flash something else at some point down the line, but right now I have no desire to change it up.

The evolution of Android has been a great one to watch. Having played with a G1, it was convoluted and a bit cumbersome. Now, the os is clean and concise, and most importantly it's open. Kudos to progression...

this is my first android cell phone,,,absolutely loving my nexus 5 and flashing rooting stuff,,,ditching iphone 4 and getting nexus 5 felt great,,,
using purity rom with franco kernal,,,,awesome experience,,,tried droidkang cm catacyslm minimus omni slimkat
flashing is addictive then my beer addiction ,,,
previous phones: iphone4, nokia e 5,iphone3g, nokia n73,

I'm really happy with how much I love my Nexus 5. To me the speaker got a little bit better from 4.4 to 4.4.1 so I was able to hear my alarm in the morning better.
