[Q] Simple answers for prospective buyers

So I am considering buying the Nook Color for use with an Android ROM ideally honeycomb and Instead of having to sort through tons of threads I think a single one would be nice for those also thinking about jumping in.
Most of these will be in reference to android phones and relating the experience since that's all I have to go off.
I have a SGS Captivate
Battery life compared to phone?
Usability? Speed, what is working what isn't? Does it feel like a step back when coming from a high end smart phone?
Video? Sound? etc
I know these questions have been answered somewhere, but having a single thread dedicated to answering questions for users looking to jump in with the Nook Color hacking would be nice, IMHO.

Anyone who has done this how is it related to your android phone if you have one. I'm really interested in this but if it will feel like a step back from the phones i don't know if it's worth it?

I have a Droid X and the nook running CM7.
Right now the nook is very comparable to the X. With the beta rom it is still a little chopy but web browsing is so much better on the bigger and higher resolution screen. I don't boot up my computer as much for casual web browsing as much as I use to. It is nice being able to browse anywhere in my house(I'm writing this while cooking dinner) , or while watching TV.
Apps are still hit or miss on CM7 right now (Pandora doesn't work) and I'm not much of a gamer so I'll leave that to others.

Thanks so much I'm pretty excited to try this out. Hopefully it is as good as I think it can be. I know it won't be a xoom. But it should be sweet.

I have an HTC Incredible which should be similarly performing to the Captivate.
The DINC has the worst battery life of any Android phone I've seen so that's not maybe the best comparison, but I use my nook several hours a day and manage several days between charges. I think battery life is impressive.
Out of the box, the speed is noticeably slower, but not that bad. Running an OC'd 1100mhz kernel I get a much higher quadrant score (around 1150) than my stock DINC. The NC's improvement is significant.
I haven't installed a different ROM since I'm waiting for a daily driver stable honeycomb. That beings said, I have absolutely zeros problems using my NC daily as a tablet. I find it much easier than the smaller screen on my phone. Nor have I encountered anything I wanted to do that didn't work almost perfectly.
Video is a bit more pixelated than I'd like but I haven't spent a lot of time looking into it. Sound is pretty good, and the built in speaker is better than expected. I have heard of issues with the headphone jack.
All in all it's a great investment of $250. You could get a more fully featured tablet for the price of three NC's. I don't think the additional features are worth the cost difference, especially when you add in the amazing work done by the xda Devs.

I used to spend a couple of hours every evening sitting at my desktop PC browsing the net and reading forums. In the couple of weeks since getting and rooting the NC, I think I've fired up my PC four times. Now I do my nightly surfing from the couch next to my wife while she watches TV and she feels much less neglected. ;-)

I'm planing on using this as an ebook reader some just because the screen size would be nicer than my phone, but also like you said web, stuff like that. Keep the personal experiences coming they are very helpful for us who are hesitant to join in.

The nook is not perfect but its impossible to beat for the price. As other have said I fire up my computer far less than before. I have an evo and I would say that the NC feels as snappy and maybe even snappier. The thing I can tell you is that I was a for sure for the Xoom but the NC and all of its hacks help me to make the decision that I can wait. 100% happy with the Nook and I think most anyone else would be also.

I also have a captivate since release day (and got the pleasure of gettint a new one in December due to random shutdowns) and I can say the battery life on the nook is way better than any sgs rom even the stock eclair. I also don't browse on my phone anywhere near as much as I used to. The nook color doesn't have the most features, the fastest cpu, or even the best screen but for the price it blows everything else away hands down. Honestly its one of the few "toys" I've gotten in a while that I haven't had an ounce of buyers remorse with

I love my honeycomb. Its really fast and it has only minor issues. Mine is 100% reliable and i use it everyday and i only use my laptop for downloading roms and/or flashing sd cards. I have a rooted rom'd and oc'd droid 1 at 1300mhz and while i love my droid, i hardly use it anymore.
I really recommend it and emmc honeycomb is awesome. The lack of gps is the biggest thing for me, but o well... my rooted droid has one so its fine for me.

I have oportunity to buy new and very cheap HP Touchpad 16GB.
Here are my doubts:
1. I do not know at the moment how it goes with implementation of Android on it so any suggestion about this issue from you is welcome.
2. How good is WebOS for end users and also does it have any apps for kids like educational games and similar, and do i have to pay for them ???
3. Support of Qualcom 3g USB modem and it possibilities to connect via 3g network.
4. battery life experience under WebOS and Android.
i need help ASAP because offer is running out.

The answers to every one of those questions is in the forum and there are several threads with practically the same questions. Please take the time to learn to SEARCH for your answers. You will always learn more if you look for info yourself rather than it just being handed to you

I LOVE my TP(32Gig). I got a mine for a great price, and can't imagine I'd get much better for 4x the money of what I spent

My two cents;
If you like ICS and the 10 inch size the TP is great! I have a Kindle Fire running ICS which I really like but I find myself using the TP much more often. It is faster, smoother, and more storage.
WebOS is a really cool OS but the lack of apps pretty much ruins it for me, I never use it other than just messing around with it to learn more about it, I have very few apps for WebOS. If you want a wide selection of cheap and free apps for kids, Android has plenty of these.
No idea on the usb modem, but it tethers great to every mobile wifi hotspot (android phones) that I have tried.
Battery life is good if you ask me. Maybe not as good as my wife's Ipad 2 but I use the TP a lot more for video than her, which eats battery.
I like the TP so much I bought a second one so that we now have a tablet for every kid on road-trips, it's fantastic

I know about this suggestion, but as i said, i do not have much time because of offer. I peek a little around xda and see that ics is still not developed good, but ubuntu is available too. I already did rooting of my htc desire, runing miui, but this section is new. I think i'm going to buy this little thing and wait for good version of android.

I just bought a 32GB last week, but still haven't received it. I have questioned numerous sources and they say that the CM nightlies are reliable.

I can fortunately say that I have no issues running the unofficial nightlies with TWRP recovery and nightly differential updates

I think ICS runs great on it. I have not run into any problems that a quick search on xda didn't fix easily (and most of those were caused by me screwing with things just for fun that I didn't fully understand).
It works flawlessly enough that my kids (as young as 4) and wife (as tech savvy as the 4yr old) use it all the time and have never had a single problem. They are able to install and use all the apps they want and more.

I personally believe that if you don't give it a try, you'll be short changing yourself. There are a few VERY good ICS ROM's out there right now. The only reason I ever change ROM's at this point, is because I am a flash whore. The current ROM I am on, has NOTHING going wrong with it, aside from the camera not working yet(it is being worked on). That for me is a non-issue, but may be for others. I can honestly say that it is more solid than the ROM's I run in my phone.

The future of the Dell Streak 7

Okay, I wanted to take a moment to talk about the development for our device.
Recently CM decided to no longer support Tegra 2 devices as they are starting to get dated. So basically that boils down to the fact that the CM10.1 will be the last one for our device that I do.
Currently I'm trying to jump start the process of putting out our updated kernel from 2.6.36.4 -> 3.1. This will hopefully put our device at a point where everything should work.
DerArtem is the lead developer on the kernel, but has been busy because he just got married and works a full time job, which puts a damper on his time (which is understandable).
I am putting in an 1-2 hours every morning on this, trying to fix those bugs and was just tipped on a possible way to minimize the overload of the log with the USB error. This will be a hold off till we get the kernel done as these issues should go away after the update.
I am sad to see this tablet come to an end (though not yet). We all have to admit that its time we all start moving on. I am going to push to get these last bit done and call it quits. This can take anywhere from 2-5 months to finish up, maybe a bit longer and then our device will be done.
I have had an amazing time learning about Android under DJ_Steve and DerArtem, and thank them for taking the time to teach me.

I thank you what you done so far and in the future. Can blame you one bit for your decisions.

I think setting an "end game" is respectable, and is a good goal. The kernel work is the key to smoothing things over on what has been wonderful development thus far.
The fact you've taken us this far sir is very commendable and you and the crew deserve many thanks. For your time and efforts, you have my gratitude, and my tablet serves as a hobby rather than a shelved device.
4.2.x has been flawed since release by Google, and with the way android has evolved, future versions will undoubtedly require more current hardware and OEM support. The latest tablet releases have as much computing power as a 2 year old laptop! Thanks to you, we've managed to play with JB, and I look forward to what comes before a final release.:thumbup:

Wow, I hate doing this, but I may have to close up shop on all this. Severe lack of any real work is getting done as I am looking for jobs and trying to have some game time as well.
The time to do this isn't worth it. I may ask for payments for my next ROM ($1 per download). Seriously, I hate doing it but this just isn't worth it anymore. Currently working on a AOKP release, to see if this may resolve any bugs I am having.

I use my DS7 (wifi only) on a daily base to check my mails, surf the net and stream some TV and video from my HTPC. Until now I use a HC 3.2 mod (514 mod by dreamer) together with V6 Supercharger script and am so far quite ok with that. So far I see no need to buy me a new tablet as long as the DS7 fits my few needs
But before I collect all my courage and update my DS7 in the near future to your CM10 build I want to ask a few things:
1. Is your build already stable and usable enough for the things I do with my device?
2. Any news from DerArtem about the kernel work? Will there be a new kernel for our device in the future?

If its from your HTPC, I honestly don't know as I have never tried it before. This latest build is much more stable, though it still has the gmail keyboard crash that I am tracking down. If you are happy with what you have, don't do anything. I would hate for you to make a purchase and not be happy.
I haven't heard from DerArtem in several weeks because he is in another country (Russia) doing a job. (He lives in Germany). To be honest, I don't think a new kernel is going to happen and I'm really upset by it.

One issue I see here is that when you start charging, a person paying for it like a app from the Play Store, they expect things to work. This "might" cause you to spend more time than you have been on it. Just my $0.02!

I'll be downloading it later after some usage and a charge.

I'm working on sensors now. The old sensor drivers we used were for something we dont even have. I found the correct Android drivers but they are for qualcomm devices, so I need to modify them to work.

after several attempts and research I was still not the sound from my headphones with android android 2 and 3 sound going normally but not with 4.2.1 and 4.2.2.

[Q] Couple of questions before I go through with it

I haven't had much time to read through every single thread so I thought I should ask a couple of quick questions from work. I'm thinking of getting my self a Nook HD soon since it's on sale here in Miami and I heard they have been discontinued but I am in need of some advice.
Since you guys have probably heard a lot more rumors and tips, should I go for it or should I look for something else? I am asking because by the looks of it, it's not going to be supported soon and I don't know how I should feel about that. Is there another device I should consider around the same price range?
Something I did notice is that there is not much development around this tablet other than Carbon. Are there other roms I missed that I should take into consideration and also, should I stick to the default kernel or is there others that excel?
I know the specific differences in specs but in your hands, which one feels better in regards to the system, and physically - the HD or HD+? And lastly, if I do decide to purchase it, anywhere I can get it for cheaper than at B&N?
If you guys can help me with this, I would really appreciate it!

As far as which size is best, that's completely a personal decision. If you can handle them at B&N, do similar things on each, and see what feels best for you. For me, I went with the HD+ after a prolonged session in the store to compare them. In my comparing the 2, HD+ is better for videos, and I tend to watch stuff on XBMC fairly often, so that was my deciding factor. My wife on the other hand doesn't watch many videos, and liked the feel and size of the HD. I thought I would be rooting hers, and adding a new ROM but she's satisfied with Stock, and an alternate launcher, so I haven't pressed the issue.
As far as support goes, I think they'll still be supporting them at least as long as your warranty lasts, they just won't be creating new models. So, if you're going to be rooting and adding Modded ROMs anyway, I don't think that should be much of a concern to you. You'll still be able to access your library through the Nook APP (or a number of other reader Apps, not specifically for B&N content), so you're not going to lose your books (if you even use it as a reader).
The screen is what really makes this such an awesome deal, and for the price, you won't find an alternative that comes anywhere near it.
There are a couple different versions of straight CM10.1 in addition to the Carbon, and a couple others got posted, but aren't maintained. So yeah, for right now, those are your choices. Doesn't mean somebody else won't come along and start maintaining some other ROMs in the future.

When I got mine, they told me the Nook HD & HD+, will still be around, they are simply using a third party to make them, and my Extend Protection plan would be honored until the end. I figure it will probably with refurbished units toward the end, since this was my first tablet (HD+) I wasn't sure if looking at 1920x1280 @ 9 inches was going to work, so I bought both and then returned the HD, the screen was fine for my aging eyes.
I'm using CM 10.1 EMMC following the great instruction here. It works much better than stock, but there is a stock thread here, by leapinlar, that includes great tips as well as zips you can install to allow sideloading and other cool stuff. A MUST read if you want to keep stock only.
There are several threads about SD only installs as well as Hybrid installs that allow dual booting for the best of both worlds. Here, started by bokbokan.
I've yet to try Carbon or TweakedCarbon, but will probably do so just to see which one I like better.
I flashed both the HD & HD+ when I had them and they both felt nice and, tested them using different apps opened at the same time. The HD+ won almost every test, and the screen looks really good for watching movies and surfing. I ended up keeping the HD+, but I got a 10% coupon for another Nook, so I may grab the HD for my daughter.

How to get the most out of my Nook

Hey guys, been using cryogen on my nook for years now, and while I personally believe that it is much faster than stock, it always seems to eventually bog down, and run slow. While there might be an issue with apps or something else I'm doing wrong that keeps slowing down my nook that's not the MAIN purpose of this forum. I'm looking for the best build and settings to get the most out of my nook. Currently i'm running a recent nightly build with CM11, but was thinking about switching to snapshot for a more stable release. There are two things I want to know before doing this:
1. what is the fastest and most stable build available? I've heard in forums about a liquidsmooth build, slim builds, and obviously used nightlys but which is the best? Also CM10 or CM11 does it matter which?
2. What is the best settings for max performance? On nightly I can use the governor to up the CPU, and I know there's a ram setting, but what about the I/O scheduler? whats the optimal setting for this? Also whats the best map performance settings AND what is the best settings for performance/battery for when i'm not playing games but maybe just web browsing.
ONE FINAL NOTE:
There was a time where I enjoyed spending a week tweaking roms and trying to make experimental roms work but now I don't have time. SO what I'm looking for is a STABLE rom that doesn't need much tweaking and can simple be installed through CWM, and either the basic settings to max performance, or a third party program that will do it for me.
PS: these forums have been good to me these past years so I want to also shout out to everyone that contributes and say thank you.

The nook hd + is a serviceable tablet and well worth what I paid for it but I have given up on the idea of finding a perfect configuration. My nook performs well enough at the moment to prevent my cheap nature from buying another tab.
That being said I am getting my son a nvidia shield tablet for Christmas so he will have to share

Better than nothing
Given that the first two reply were utterly useless I figured I would post what I have found so far. . . A rom called SlimKat is the fastest rom for the nook hd+ I personally have found. I was hoping that others would post USEFUL information to this forum reguarding other ROMS rather than just stating that the nook is limited (which everyone that owns one already knows hints why were are here in the first place). I've yet to tweak it, so i'm not sure if there is a govenor on there or a way to improve how the RAM is used. And I still have no clue what an I/O scheduler does, but I didn't see one on this rom.

That's probably fixed in the LiquidSmooth F2FS version (Pg. 5 of the LS thread), as it uses different PVR source. FWIW.

I actually find asking to be a moot point.
The roms will act differently according to your needs and uses. One rom may work well for someone and not well for another who's use of it constantly goes up against a bug or other problem. Or maybe you just won't like it.
Short story, just do a full recovery backup of what you currently use and then try the others. When you like one try it for a week. If you dislike it just restore the full backup of your choice - if you make full backups of each of them you can go back to any quite fast just the way you left it.

And hardware (revisions). Take two identical tabs, install identical ROMs using identical methods, and get two different results. One crashes and reboots, the other never does. On a third the battery life suffers or the WifFi misbehaves.

And of course, be prepared to restart and repeat the entire process. Because sooner or later you're going to install something that will sour the milk. Or you just like doing it because it's just so much fun!
