How do I open/install an .APK? - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm trying to find a way to install this .APK by downloading it on the phone and installing it without downloading to a computer and copying to the SIM manually. I'm trying to cut the computer out of the equation... what's the best way to do this?

Root and enable side loading... Then open the apk with a file manager and open app installer. Read a lil bit in the forums about side loading and you will get it

newb question - installing .apk?

OK - rookie here - how do you install a .apk - I've downloaded one to my computer but don't know the next steps. The manual is silent and I think this is such a basic question that search on the forum didn't help.
Too bad there wasn't a basic FAQ for us newbies.
Thanks.
Jack
Connect your phone to your computer, drag the apk to your phone, use a file explorer on your phone (estrong) etc, to find the file on your SD card, click on it and it will give you an option to install it

You could also just use HTC Sync that came with your phone and push the .apk with that. It's how I installed Swype.

Script to remove apps?

I flash a lot of roms and I always remove some of the stock apps.every time I have to do it manually either via adb or titanium backup.can somebody teach me how to make a script to batch remove the same apps every time I flash a new rom? I use a mac but have access to a windows box as well. Thanks in advance!

There are a few different ways you can do it. A .bat file or MAC equivalent. Also do a zipped update to remove the files you want to remove.
Im on my phone but of this is still open when I get to my comp ill post links tp threads that would help.
Try a search for .bat file and update zip to remove apps.

[Q] Epic 4G ProgramMonitor Widget running on Captivate?

Hi Folks,
I just read a review of the Epic 4G and it goes into detail about a Task/System/App Manager widget by samsung that comes on the Epic 4G. The file is named SamsungWidget_ProgramMonitor.apk
I downloaded it from a message post in xda this morning (don't remember the link sorry) Anyway I tried to download it via Captivates browser and it kept saying installation unsuccessful and then I tried to install via adb and command line and it gave me the [.....NO CERTIFICATE] error message or something.
Anyway I was wondering if anyone has successfully installed this widget on their Captivate? If so how?
BTW - my captivate is rooted but running stock JF6 kernel.
If you haven't see this widget, you should check it out - looks really awesome!
Post the .APK
Can you post a link to the .APK. Also, can you confirm that you have enabled side loading?

thanks for posting a link to the .apk
So can anyone else install this successfully on their captivate or am I doing something wrong?
I also have some addtional info - I even installed and tried to use the side loading tool from android central and I get the same result as if I were using adb to install it. I get (again):
Failure [INSTALL_PARSE_FAILED_NO_CERTIFICATES]
any thoughts?
I tried to load it and it doesn't work for me. Not sure if it my be a code error or something preventing it from working, I tried with appsloader.
Nope I couldn't get it on my captivate either
Sent from my phone so excuse the spelling errors
Didn't work for me either...

I thought that you'd have to just sign the apk yourself to install, but it turns out that that only changes the error to "Failure [INSTALL_PARSE_FAILED_INCONSISTENT_CERTIFICATES]"
No dice.
So I've got it showing up on my list of samsung widgets using TwLauncher, when adding it, it adds a widget box to my screen that says "Problem loading widget", I'll work on this some more later, I'm pretty sure I can get this working, and added to the widgets folder so you don't haver to use TwLauncher

Anyone try to just drop this into system/app?
When I was trying to get MediaHub back after running SRE that is how I had to do it. Drop it into system/app and set the permissions to rw-r-r--
That doesnt work, the widget is locked to that phone, and its locked as a Samsung Widget.
I've figured out how to get this working, but my problem is my computer wont see the mounted drive on my phone anymore, and when i mount it, adb shows it offline, when its not mounted, adb shows it online.. its weird...

Unable to download .zip files

There is probably a easy solution to this problem, but I haven't been able to find anything about it.. I have tried to download zip files on several occasions, and always get the message content not supported, and it wont let me download the file.. Any suggestions are very much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

What do you mean download? You are trying to load an update.zip to your phone or you are trying to unzip it inside of your phone? I have not heard of anyone trying to unzip inside of the phone because that is not what the intended purpose of the zip is for. More details because you are very vague in your process.
In this case I am trying to download the super circle battery file, the update.zip file......i click to download from the link, the download doesn't initiate, and I get the message "unable to download, content not supported". If I have read correctly, the file will save to the correct location, then I can boot up in recovery mode and reinstall packages.

Download and install Astro FileManager from the marketplace... then you can download zips
Thanks.. I will give that a shot.

I wasn't aware a file manager has that functionality but using opera mini browser will allow the download of all types of files.

Astro worked great, and super circle battery installed w no problems. Thanks for the help!

How do I install a new framework-res.apk? [solved]

I have a framework-res.apk to give me battery % on the top bar, but im not sure how to install it... Can someone help please?
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
use Astro File Manager and open it. you should be at /sdcard. then press "UP" and you should be at / now.
all in all. navigate to /system/framework and replace the framwork-res.apk file.
do backup your original apk file incase things don't work out.
Right I tried that, with Astro I can't copy files to root directories (above /sdcard/) I tried EStrongs file manager and it says it can't be copied... Is there any reason it won't work?
Or is there another way of doing this?
Thanks.

hmm weird. it worked for me, judging from your signature you're rooted so... i have no idea. paid solutions like root explorer and all, or adb. isn't the battery modification done via an update.zip now? it's easier and way automated.
Yeah it's rooted and it had worked before but when this method didn't work again I thought I was doing it wrong.
I'll have a look for the thread again when I'm home and see what it says and if there's an update.zip.
Thanks for the help

definitely an update.zip method now. i've applied it yesterday lol no problem.
here's the thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=765419
Damn you're good, thats the exact thread
Well I'm glad it's done by update.zip haha.
