[Q] Buying a Milestone/Droid - Motorola Droid and Milestone General

Hi,
i consider buying a milestone/droid. Im currently using a HTC Hero.
I hope you guys can help me with a few questions i have..:
- Is the homescreen really as laggy as it appears in YouTube videos? (flicking trough homescreens) If yes -> Is this a stock ROM problem? Is the performance better with a custom ROM?
- How good does multitouch really work? As all HTC devices have this strange multitouch bug i want to know how well it works on the milestone/droid. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cy2wICXkAcA)
- Are there as many Devs working on the droid as on the Hero? How many custom ROMs are there? Are they any good?
- How usable is the HW-keyboard in daily use? I tried it in some shops and the keys were pretty hard to press, but those phones were just dummys, not actual devices.
Thank you!

Welcome to MOTO world.
Here are you infos:
- The laggy came from stock ROM only! Once you've rooted + OC >= 720Mhz, you'll get only 1 word: WOW!!! The Droid/MS is even stronger than HTC N1, Desire in real 3D apps with amazing battery life.
- Multi-touch works perfect without glitch on customized ROM (G.O.T roms recommended -> links). The laggy from the clip caused by 550Mhz (stock MS) vs 1000Mhz (stock N1). Again, once you set the MS over 720Mhz you'll the WOW.
- Keyboard is fine but not really comfortable enough for long typing because its design.

Which is the faster ROM?

Hi All
I am on R3A at the moment, which has all that I need, but I still find it very slugish and want to move to a custom ROM. Can someone who has tried the ROMs below let me know which of the 3 runs fastest for everyday tasks:
Touch X ULTIMATE 10.0 EXTREME
Touch-IT v9
Windows Mobile 6.5 for the XPERIA X1 - PURE ROM
Thanks in advance for any help.
Touch x. It is almost a perfect rom, would be perfect if it had the touch it colors and vibration
Bare is best
If have been Flashing my x1 more than 50 times and found the bare sex1 rom (Windows Mobile 6.5 for the XPERIA X1 - PURE ROM) is the on with the least bug's
Hi guys
I dont mind the odd bug here and there. But which ROM runs the fastest in your opinions?

Mmm...sorry for jumping in but i notice there is no Valkyrie's rom in your list which i thinks it is very fast and bugless.I don't know why it not in your list, may be it lack of popularity or you don't like manila+6.5? Of course other roms are great too,but i think this one is fastest/smoothest.
Why don't you try it,it just take few minits to flash (remember to hard spl first),may be you'll love it.Cheers
haven't try Valkyrie's.. but from ur list, I think Touch it 9 and gtrab's WM6.5 is faaast.. Touch X has a lag here and there sometimes but quite stable I think...
I've found gtrab's barebone ROM from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=509891 to be pretty quick to be fair. it might slow down a little if you install some apps though, I'm relatively happy atm with it as it is, I've not yet installed much.

IMHO F4810 wasn't in the least bit rude... He practically welcomed the posters to the thread, stated that he doesn't mind some bugs, and reiterated his original question.
wm 6.5 pure xperia x1 without panel, youtube and HTC staff.
I can safely say that Touch X v10 fixed and Touch IT v9 have to split the throne. Touch X does not have the sms bug though so I'd go with that one for now, just to be safe. It's actually as fast as a stock Touch Pro 2 now, it you watch some videos of TP2 on Youtube in envy, you really need to flash one of these roms, because then you get that speed ^^
I would say "barebone" roms are generally faster. Xperia's performance has always been an issue for me, slow video playbacks, sluggish video recording, etc etc.
In my opinion Touch X v10 is fast but slows down at times, eg. dismissing notifications, setting panels etc.

Dissmissal of the "Message sent" is notoriously slow to get past - you can turn it off with Advanced Config though. Setting panels I don't know about, but panels are quite a slow software overall to begin with
Definitely Touch X 10 - very fast and stable...

Thank you. I think me trying to be polite was lost in translation as being rude, but you correctly point out what I was trying to do.
Thanks for all your comments. I guess I need to check out Valkyries ROM too. I think the best thing is that I try all 4 ROMs for a few days each, and see which is best.
One last question, if I back up my ROM (R3A) as it is. Will it save all my personal settings, customisations, and installs too. So if I dont like any custom ROMS, I can go back to the exact way it was?
Thanks

I agree, you weren't the least bit rude.
Anyway, please report back about your speed comparison.

Stock Desire/Sense on N1 - MoDaCo alternative???

Hey,
i would like to know if there is any alternative ROM for the work of MoDaCos Desire-Port? His version doesn't seem to work for me. I have call wonks and could not resolve the issues withe dewonkificator
I would like to have the stock desire version
Any chances?
THIS any good for you?
Yeah that would be nice
But that ROM is toooo alpha for me, though i didn't try it by myself (just read from others). Seems that i have to wait for that ROM to be finished.
Though i had similar experiences on my old HD2 -> the small and clean desire-ROMs were always a lot faster than the new ports
What makes you want a Desire ROM in the first place? If it's just the Sense 'look', like the clock for instance, you could achieve that with various widgets and apps.
firstly i find the sense-thing very attractive....
secondly i am sure that the camera works very well with the desire-port - especially i want wide screen (that has no stock foryo or gingerbread)
3. I want everything working and all those CM7 release candiates don't satisfy me with their wonks
I dont know, but i think with htc sense one could get the most instant access to applications and so on - everything is thought out quite well and it takes minimal effort to get done things done.
The eye-candy is not so important...
What would you recommend?
P.S.: i need it smooth
Use the older Sense ports, Froyo, from Desire or Desire HD.
Look for eVIL D:'s ROMs, or MicroMod's.
MM's HD Desire is very good and stable, love widescreen
Read Op page before flashing

Which ROM to install?

Hello,
I have my A853 Milestone for about a year and a half.
Currently I have the HO!NO! Cyanogen mod installed on it.
The problem is that the device is very slow, it always crash and games are super laggy (like Angry Birds) or it crashes (like Draw Something).
Which ROM should I install?
I want it to be stable, quick and run games like it should run them.
Thanks

I've had my OG droid for over two years, and I think I've tried every possible ROM there is. The Gingerbread ROM are nice, but they lag really badly on the device. It doesn't have the CPU or memory to handle it well enough. You could do it, but things like the camera and games will almost always end up bogging the device to unresponsive.
I've had the best luck with Liquid Frozen Yogurt 1.95. It s a 2.2.1 ROM (Froyo) and it is really smooth. The camera actually works which is a problem for most of the GB ROMs. Bugless Beast is also a good ROM.

Does games on Frozen Yogurt 1.95 run smoothly? no lags?
Is it stable? (no crashes)

oh..
well I'm trying to install The Froyo Mod now, I remember it was good + this is 2.2, which the milestone should support much better than the Gingerbread - 2.3.
Lol, sorry

Nothing I did could get the gb roms to run smoothly. The OG droids just don't have the ram.

I installed TheFroyoMod 2.9.3 and now the device is much better.
It runs smoothly, Draw Something actually works (pretty smooth), it's stable and I recommand you to install it too.
It makes sense because the device officially support 2.2 and not 2.3, it has resources for 2.2 but not enough for 2.3
Rom
I play zenonia in froyo mod with minimal lags. I think it is the best rom for gaming.
I liked cm6 for battery but cm9 was running really good on mine

What's wrong with CM 7.2.0 RC1 by kabaldan? I'm planing to install it on my 2.2 stock ROM but retain the 600mhz frequency for battery life reason. Would I suffer worse performance than my current stock?
thanks
I'm in the same boat as the OP.
I am setting up my friend's OG Droid and I'm curious the best ROM.
I have to say I'm pretty happy with CM 7.1 stable release so far. It works great so far and I haven't noticed any problems. The camera seems fine.
Is GB really that bad?
I did try CM 7.2 experimental build (from CM download page) and it was working great until I noticed that the flashlight app, torch wouldn't work. I really wanted it to work in the Power Widget. After screwing around with it for quite a while, I ended reflashing back to CM7.1 stable.
Assuming games won't be games played on the device, I think that CM7 is the way to go unless there are more RAM-hogging apps running. I'm a newb to the OG Droid though.
*EDIT*
P.S. Do you guys have a favorite recovery? I am using CWM 2.5.0.1. The weird thing is it doesn't display Dalvik as wiped when I wipe Dalvik Cache. I dunno if it is a problem or not. I actually searched around a fair bit. What is the best recovery for the OG Droid? Stability, nandroids, and functionality are key. I don't care about touch interface.
Thanks. Feel free to flame me if I am overlooking this info.
recovery i use minimod, hava any scripts (supercharge), unistall system apps, backup apps and have a script to wipe a ext partition.
I used all roms for milestone and cm6 (or shadowmod discontinued a long time ago ) is the best, the only one it works fine, another roms always have a problem with performance (i don't play in my phone).
I have been runnning a rooted overclocked (800mhz) stock rom for ages, but still had issues with it freezing when surfing and quitting apps.
Yesterday I finally got round to changing to CM 7.2.0 RC1. Performance is so much better, more options, smoother scrolling, but the battery life is worse. I had to charge it twice today which is usually a rare occurance. So I have knocked it back down to 800mhz again from 1ghz, setup the 2g toggle, and made a few other tweeks. Will see how that does for now, but if not then will look into battery calibration.
I rarely use my phone for gaming, so couldn't comment on the performance, but if its anything like what I experienced elsewhere you should be happy. Slightly earlier builds have been mentioned to have a better battery life too.
Hope that helps
Best ROM on the Milestone right now? MIUI 2.4.20 hands down.
Damn... new users can't post outside link but Google it.
And btw, it seems that the ROM was designed for Chinese Milestone so the physical keyboard layout is kinda messed up if you use Europe or HK milestone. And since I don't use the physical keyboard at all so it's not a huge problem. But seriously, this is the best damn thing you can put on a Milestone, try it out
Cheers

While it will probably work better than a stock ROM, I'd suggest you try a Froyo based ROM. The biggest issue with GB on a Milestone is the RAM. I tried out every single workaround I came across for over a year, only to end up going back to CM6 (vikasbn's version).

That's the one I'm currently using and so far it's worked like charm. It's also the only one that seems to be updated.
Hello everyone,
I have an A853 (Milestone). I am looking for advice on what SBF and ROM to install, and how to optimize the performance.
I hope it is ok for me to join this thread (instead of opening a new one). Below are my concerns; I am looking forward to advice from experienced forum members (reading from your posts, you definitively are experienced):
1. underlying firmware (OS)
If I understand correctly, due to the locked bootloader I can only change which kernel I will be running by flashing a different SBF file:
- SHOLS_U2_02.31.0 (I believe this is stock Eclair?)
- SHOLS_U2_05.26.3 (and this should be stock Froyo?)
Which SBF should I flash my phone with, so that the ROM I will later choose will work best? Of course, I'll apply a vulnerable SBF afterwards.
2. ROM
I am most keen on MIUI (the latest and final build for this device is 2.4.20?), since I was using it before and I really like its user interface. However, I experienced some problems with it (unresponsive/laggy, not receiving SMS messages after some time, etc.).
Is the MIUI-derivate NIMIUI any better? Moreover, I saw there is another ''chef'' quynhnt that is further developing NIMIUI but I see user responses that it is kind of buggy?
I've tried FroyoMOD which seemed the fastest to me (although I would be really missing MIUI features), however it did not let me connect to my home WiFi (WPA2+AES+Radius) so I let it go.
ICS seems kind of no-go to me because Milestone only has 256MB of RAM (which is very little); I've tried the unofficial alpha CM9 and although everything worked, it was just too laggy. I believe the unofficial MIUI v4 would be the same.
Any suggestions? I am leaning towards official MIUI but with thorough testing of incoming SMS (I can't afford not to receive them) and additional optimizations that are decribed below. Or am I missing something?
3. optimizations
SuperCharger
Definitively I would like to use the SuperCharger V6 (or is it V8 - any differences?). Which settings profile should I select based on the following demands:
- I don't play games on my phone
- I want a responsive phone with no lag
- The most demanding app I use is Exchange sync (6 accounts), nothing more
Build.prop modifications?
Should I take care of anything here? Maybe change the Dalvik heap size (to what?)
ext3 on sdcard
Can this somehow help me? I have prepared a functioning ext3 partition on my sd, I just don't know if it is possible to somehow manage a swapfile on it and if this should help my phone being less laggy? Can MIUI handle this out-of-the-box?
I kindly thank to anyone who would be willing to help me with advice.
Best regards, d11
I got an OG Droid i use for multimedia... The screen is crystal clear with LIquid Smooth... the launcher sometimes gets buggy but everything works including torch etc... It basically made an old system useful again. I'll try out other system and post my results... Froyo versions first and so on...

New droid owner

So I recently bought the og droid of ebay. I plan to use it as a tinker device and a possible media device. I was wondering what's the best kernel/rom for the droid.
So if you could respond with a smooth rom/kernel that would be great!
Thx
Also what is a safe overclock? 1.0 ghz?
I personally prefer the 2.3 cyanogenmod based roms for the OG; good amount of customization with a fairly smooth and stable feel. *
Lately though I've been testing out kfazz's 4.1 rom for the OG which is quite smooth for being on a single-core ~1GHz device.
In terms of overclocking, you can safely OC up to 1.2GHz (1.3 is obtainable but a lot of OG's become quite unstable at this speed, especially with the performance governor). Chevyno1 has couple nice kernels for the droid OG.*
Hope this helps and welcome to the OG family =) had mine since March 2010 and it's still kickin'.
*I apologize for the lack of urls, but I don't have perms to post outside links yet =(
-cyanogenmod for droid OG can be downloaded from their site
-chevyno1's list of OG kernels is on the AndroidForums (quick google search should pull that right up)
Thank you.
I tried chevyno1 kernel but in get a message that my nand needs to be off? Any idea?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
Huh, I looked into it (guessing that you're referring to s-off) and it looks like it's a HTC phone specific thing. Couldn't find any documentation of this issue on the droid og (or milestone) and I've never run into this problem with my droid.
Sorry I couldn't help you with this one =(
Thanks for your help. I figured it out by formating my /system. Hehe probably should have done that before. Oh well.
Hi all. I just got Milestone real cheap from a friend. With 550MHz cpu and original rom it felt a bit sluggish. Also my friend said there's no way to change phone's language to Finnish since Motorola has provided only some languages.
Well I now have CyanogenMod 7.2.2 (Android 2.3.7), 1 GHz cpu, Finnish as the system language and also hw keyboard multipress for Finnish letters. This is great, even better than I expected! Thanks to all the developers.

[Q] I am thinking of buying this phone, but need some questions

1- O4X or HTC One X...aside from the expandable memory(and price ofc), any other important differences
2- Root available? easy ? plenty of roms? android 4.2 available (CM ofc)
3- heating? game compatibility ? lag? battery life?
4- any thing u can think of?

1. HTC One X all the way, better support, unlockable from day one via HTCDev, and much better build quality. Plus Sense 4+ is far superior to Optimus UI.
2. Yes but only for ICS, relatively easy, only 2 roms that work somewhat well (key features are missing).
3. Gets hot but not that bad. Gaming is actually not that good unless you download gamebooster and tweak it how you need. I couldnt even get the old GBCoid emulator to run without a hitch.
4. It's a bad choice of phone overall

The Support for the One X is way better thank on our phone(till now).
Games are smooth on my device. Im running a costum ROM on Stock they werent.
Kernel is outdated but as far as I know kholk has a newer one but since bootloader isnt (completely) unlocked it wont be us free to install
The battery life is a little bit poor (But a new Kernel could possibly fix this)
I love the design of the Optimus.
But I think if you dont mind to spent 100 € more on your phone you should buy HTC One X cause there are wayyyy more ROMs and you dont have to wait till the bootloader gets unlocked
But I'm quite satisfied with my phone
I hope this helps
Sorry for my English
in my opinion,O4X screen is more responsive then htc one x and GS3..but its not as appealing in colors as Htc one x screen..
