[q] odin3 help! - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a samsung i9000 with stock JF3 and had rooted and lag fixed it but was having problems downloading apps, paid at first then all downloads begun to fail.. Anyway I tried to use ODIN3 to re-flash the original firmware but to no avail!! I took the battery sim card and sd card out put the phone in download mode, Then started odin3 and connected the phone. Odin3 can see the port but just stays on analysing files... Have then disconnected and tried over and over and over... so many times I don't care to remember. It never gets passed the analysing files. It did fail twice, but that was something to do with samsung kies stealing the COM port (I think!!). Anyway thought I would try and update the firmware through samsung kies. But just get the unable to upgrade this firmware. Which I'm surprised at as most seem to have the option think its to do with my firmwares but not sure.
If anyone could shed light on this also it would be much appreciated!!
Code XXJF3, Modem XXJF3, CSC XENJF3
Anyway to the point of this topic. I Now want to just flash the new Firmware myself but am wondering, If I could not connect odin3 to re-flash the original firmware... Am I going to have problems re-flashing with downloaded firmware! Am thinking there's a great chance of bricking my phone. Doing it all in the correct order so dont understand why it wont connect!!!
Also is there another way/program I could use to flash my device???

You could try using Samsung Kies to install the JM1 official firmware

I did... I also wrote that in the thread!! Where I said it cannot be upgraded through kies!

Disconnect all usb devices except mouse and kb and try again. Best to use windows xp. A powered usb Hub helped me too. I think sgs drains too much power from usb ports

Thanks I shall try that!, got lots of USB's plugged in... I am on xp... If this does not work though, is there an alternative to ODIN3??? or am I stuck on stock JF3... As that would be unbearable.. no samsung update and cant do it myself!!!! I have noticed a few of the senior members do live in Holland, so I shall put it out there that if one of you nice dutch fella's who know's what your doing wouldn't mind having a look at my sgs for me I would be very much greatfull! Holland isn't the biggest of places so I would be willing to travel.... Thats how much I wanna get this sorted!!

Subject Solved
Well I have found the answer!!... Well for me anyway!
I was following the information everywhere as to how to put my SGS into downoad mode!: Volume up + home + Power button... I was assuming this was correct as it was loading up with an android menu with the following options: Restart phone, Update via update.zip, restore to factory settings. I thought while in this I was in download mode. No I wasn't!! LOL... God knows how many times I was trying to connect odin3 and to no avail. I have now found out if i press volume down + home + power button... walaaaa A big green android man doing what appeared to be some digging (Didn't stay on screen long) also with DOWNLOADING in huge green letters... I am now assuming this maybe download mode and I will have better joy attaching my SGS to odin now... If I am wrong someone may slap me in the face with a giant swordfish and leave me for the rats!

Big problem about I9000 Warrantly

Today i am going to refresh my rom . After finishing, Galaxy S can not open...
Is Galaxy S or the battery problem?
Have any method to slove this problem?
I bought from Optus in Australia
Now Version is JM5 and he old version is Jm5,if i go to the custom services ,will i cease the warrant?
Thanks everyone to help.
as long as you flashed it with a samsung-made firmware and not a custom ROM, i think your warrantly should still be ok!
If you seek help from the guys here, my guess is that you need to explain a bit more in detail what's not working, besides "cannot open".
"New version is JM5 and old version is JM5" ??

"cannot open" mean when i press the turn on/turn off button don't have any respond.
"New version is JM5 and old version is JM5" That is mean Before and after flashing version, the reason of flash again is i can not use Galaxy but i can enter the download mode. i think this information may help you to find mine problems..but i am not sure.

Flash I9000DTJG4 if you got your phone from Optus in Australia.
Find it here.
i cannot switch on the Galaxy S even by any modes.
Simply, i think it is broken down and I dont know what to do. I am not sure if my warrant is still effective or not.
You know, generally flash the rom will cease warrant.I think people l solve my problem there... Because Xda's is professional...
Can someone move this thread :-(
I almost fell of my chair when reading "BIG PROBLEMS WITH I9000".
Big problem with flashing you mean !!
OH.. sorry .......
Admin move to correct section.
Sorry about that
Try charging the battery. and then switch on the phone..
SGS is pretty unbrickable
No problem
I hope you find a solution quick.
1. If the phone is turned off then remove the SD card, the SIM card and the battery.
2. Put the battery in only then enter Download mode. Hold in vol down and Home buttons then press the power button. Works every time.
3. OPTUS is currently using I9000DTJG4 available here
4. Set up ODIN with the correct files. PIT 512 and the code file called ADD_OPS.tar from the download.
5. Select Re-Partition.
6. Connect your phone to your computer via USB cable. Wait for com to come up in ODIN.
7. Flash the Aussie firmware.
Wish you luck my friend.
no no no... i CANNOT OPEN SGS AT ANY MODE..
It seems sgs don't have the battery... i cannot charge the phone ..
ososos, unfortunately it sounds like a full brick to me. I think there have been about 5 occurrences of this (myself being one of them), one guy managed to get his to power on my holding home + volume down + power and inserting the battery whilst these buttons were being held.
However as a general rule if your phone won't even turn on you'll need to send your phone off for repair.
Hmmm try using some friend's battery if he too has SGS... Or try charging only the battery at optus.. GL mate..

Soft-Bricked, No PC connectivity

Hey there, i am feeling somewhat overwhelmed with all of the advice going on out there and need someone who can give me the answer to my specific problem hardware wise without breaking a sweat...
I flashed a froyo 2.2 rom onto my phone a while ago, recently all of my apps stopped working, and i could no longer install any apps.
Couple days ago i tried openning gmail and the screen went black and gave me the bzzzzzz...............................bzzz...bzzz...
vibrating error that you usually get when an app crashes.
Now the phone continues doing that even when booted up and stuff
It starts right after the S screen and repeats until the battery is removed.
My phone can't get into download or reset mode using the 3 button method so i bought a jig off of ebay, works like a charm.
however NOW, i cannot get the computer to see the phone; both when it is on and attached and in download mode and attached. Odin can't see it, neither can Kies.
If i can get either to see it, i can look up the flashing process to make sure everything is right.... but as of yet nothing i am doing is making a difference.
Thanks for any help
Ok, I'd focus on odin so disable Kies (in task manager processes - all the kies processes).
Then I would 1) reinstall the drivers (standalone ones) 2) Have a few versions of odin to try (like 1.3, 1.7 and ez odin) 3) Clean your usb port on the phone (and computer maybe too - whats the harm?).
Usually if you are sure the drivers are Ok then you should be able to odin working with a nice clean port. They are more sensitive to dirt/moisture or whatever than they should be.
Try that and let us know...
BTW Some people think that the order is important but I've never noticed that. I always have odin open and then connect it but cant hurt to try the other way around too.
Hey thanks alot,
I am at work right now but i am optimistic about trying that out lol.
Just so i know for when the time comes and if Odin works, what files do i need to flash it? .pit, .tar and anything else specific for Bell Canada?
I only ask because you are with Bell so it is probably a very simple answer for you. Otherwise I am sure i can find it elsewhere.
Thanks,
I'll keep you updated
Josh
Download the complete jl2 rom from link I posted yesterday (search my posts) with repartition ticked, then flash the kc1 rom from stock rom link on xda or at samfirmware.com and flash without repartition if you want the latest. You could just try the kc1 step but I you need to repartition.

Hey man,
my phone has never been sent in for repairs or replaced...
I was reading one of your other posts and you advised another member to send it in and maybe they will replace/update hardware?
I have still had my phone for less than a year so sending it in will be no problem at all...
Should i flash to the latest myself or return to stock and send it in?
I really appreciate your help.
Thanks
Well he knows his is broken as he can see that his internal memory reads 0 (which means its cooked - ask me how I know...) and he was trying to fix it in a round about way. Or there was the guy who flashed a captivate rom - that was just a big no-no.
You might just have a corrupt partition or some other corruption in the file system. I seem to get that all the time and its a pain but very fixable .
Alright, sooo
-uninstall Kies
-install drivers only
-try to connect to Odin
-If succesful flash with Odin
-dance with joy
Got it, I will update you later when i get home.
Thanks
installed drivers on my work computer (32 bit windows xp) and nothing... I've tried phone off, phone on, phone in d/l mode... It doesn't pick up anything...
I can try it on my Windows 7 comp at home and see if that works but i'm wondering what the worst case scenario is just bringing into Bell and having them fix it... Am i looking at charges, warranty voiding, etc.. etc... to have it fixed or could i BS my way out of it?
Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu
pretty sure i flashed the wrong firmware on my phone, when it boots up it says GT-I9000 not GT-I9000M.
It worked fine for like 6 months so i never questioned it... damn damn damn
Not to be completely devious but i got an extended warranty that replaces the phone due to water damage, theft, etc. etc...
If there is no other way should i take advantage of that?
I would hate to jump to one of those actions but i am somewhat panicking becuase i made a super-noob mistake and effed up my phone....
I9000 firmware is completely compatible. The text you see is from the kernel which are always for i9000 unless you have one of the three bell firmwares. So that's not the issue.

I would keep trying. I have gotten warranty before and I was in the same predicament as you almost except I knew that the internal memory was dead. But that was also around the time when most of the I9000M models were dying. They might be checking more now.
If you get odin to flash a stock rom then you can go for it but by then you should be able to fix it.

Alright i will keep trying.
As far as the firmware goes, my gf and i both have the same phone, but she kept heres official and i put custom roms on mine (just the 2.2 because it wasn't available)
We are both on bell canada so i asked her to boot up her phone and the beginning message on hers says GT-I9000M so it freaked me out lol
I will try on my home computer,
keep your fingers crossed for me
Alright, so Odin can now see my phone (it was the damn cord, my Win 7 comp couldnt see it but my xp work laptop can)
Which firmware would you recomend flashing? Stock gingerbread or a slight variation?
I am at work right now so i can wait a bit for a good response. It'd really help me out if you could provide links and tips to the best firmware out right now (i have no problem flashing a custom ROM if it is good).
Thanks alot,
Josh
Succesfully Flashes Gingerbread 2.3.4
Thanks for all your help!!!
how did you manage to see it in odin?
i have te same problem with restarting just after first screen (after flashing to gingerbread) but i cant see it in odin so i cant flash it again?
when i connect it when turned off, a small icon appears with usb connected sound but its still not visible.
Is it maybe my win7?
help, anyone please
Did you start in Download mod? Did you kill the Kies processes in you Win7 task manager ?
If yes, sometimes Windows takes time to install the drivers (be sure ton be connected to the internet), you should also close and relaunch Odin.
i launched download mode with sdk, and now i cant start it.
i went to another pc with xp. it installs drivers but odin cant recognize it.
Well i did it on my work XP computer becuase WIN 7 wasn't recognizing it. But it turns out the whole time the cable i was using would connect to charge, but not act as a pc connection.

Captivate suddenly not detected by PC

ok first off I have searched and have yet to find a sollution. So if there is one please flame me and point me to it.
Problem : I have 2 computers, both win 7 x64 pro. my desktop does not detect any cell phone, my friends droid 1 or my samsung captivate..... Both have all the drivers installed. That is a small problem because i have a laptop that does ( DID)
Big problem : phone having problems, me flash captivate and flash fail ( i think i used odin 2.2 flasher which for some reason doesnt want to work, i tryed it a few times before... but anyways so I'm in download mode and now the computer wont detect my phone, just like my desktop, I get the UNKNOWN USB device or the usb device did not install correctly blah blah blah malfunction... SO now I'm able to get into DL mode but thats it.... so where is the fix for this? Please help . its so strange that no changes were made and it goes from having worked for months to not working at all suddenly...
Again neither odin v 2.1 or v 2.2 ( as in froyo and eclar) will detect phone nor will the hemdol program or what evs.... so i can not boot past download mode. Please help .
the answers are out there... itll just take a bit of reading... however sounds like there are program incompatibilities somewhere not allowing your drivers to install especially after you said drivers did not install blah blah. Also try changing usb ports when you plug it in and go through and check to make sure all you usb drivers and ports are functioning properly. Furthermore check to ensure your charging port isnt loose and or pins bent or broken same with your cable.
try this as well... says right click and run odin in admin etc.

What rom are you on? CM7 MIUI?
Well huge problem... for some reason the phone wont charge now so now i cant even get in DL mode and before that i couldnt for the life of me no matter what i read find a fix for the USB issue. idk what the **** it is but its really annoying.... I was using OFFICAL 2.2 and was trying to reflash it and try it again or flash 2.1 because i was getting random restarts. then the flash failed for some reason first time ever I think ( i seriously have flashed about a dozen times since ive had my phone over 9 months, So i know alot and have read alot, have a jig and all that jazz) so i know what im doing... I just got my phone back from samsung about a month ago they fixed a random button pressing problem, and now the turning off on a Stock rom ( plus firefly prior, why i went back to stock) made me paranoid, plus i use it as a clock for work so i cant have it turn off randomly at all. So what am I to do? I possibly can use my friends battery for a bit or my womans... but im thinking maybe this has less to do with computer now and possibly that my phone fried or something that i should send it in to samsung for warranty repair...since obviously if it was restarting on a new 2.2 instalation obviously there were probably some problems...
I read a similar story of this randomly happening to another experienced user on google, and he sent it in to samsung and they just sent him a new phone... my AT&T warrianty is long gone on my refurb but i still got 3 months left with samsung... idk why it isnt even charging on wall outlet or computer...
what to do?
Did the phone go "dead" after a failed firmware flash? Or it literally just all of a sudden won't charge? If it was truly random then it's a hardware problem all the way and most likely an issue with the USB port or a trace routed through it. Only 2 lines control charging and the Captivate is notorious for a pretty solid port from my findings.
Well I left my phone in the wall for hours and I guess it does charge so its not completely dead. Now just the issue of reflashing stock on there... so getting the USB to work in my computer. I take it the USB in the phone isnt dead or the JIG wouldnt work... I just want to know if the Random shut off is hardware related or a bad flash / rom? Anyone know what has less problems? 2.1 or 2.2? I dont think my keyboard is in 2.1 so i dont think i could take it... but i just want a working phone with my gingerbread keyboard <3 I just dont want it to turn off on me...
and now randomly odin's will still not detect, but heimdol will, but it fails about 18% into factoryrfs or what evs. And Yes I have used it before and yes I am following all directions. WTF this is blowing my mind... and yes repartition is selected
Are you using an OEM Samsung Cable? Don't use knock off cable for anything more than charging...
just fyi if u rooted ur phone and samsung checks the programing to find out and trouble shoot it will void your warranty and youll have to pay for it... so um maybe try spending the 50 and go with a refurb thru insurance.
Yes I'm using stock cable...
ANd its not rooted, its not ANYTHING since there is no OS on the phone so no way to see anything to void anything...
now most things ( on different computers) will detect the phone and all odin and heimdol but they will both fail at the beginning of any flash... Its like nothing can be pushed through the phone.... ?
I have heard once hedimall is used on a computer it screws with odin and wont let it see ur phone

It doesn't necessarily screw with it. Heimdall installs a custom WinLIB USB driver to operate with Samsung Composite USB devices. This driver is used for Samsung Download mode which ODIN doesn't recognize. To switch back to using ODIN, you just need to go into device manager and uninstall the device and be sure to DELETE DRIVER FOR THE DEVICE. Then just plug the phone back in when in DL mode and the Samsung driver will be re-installed. However, this is really beginning to sound more like a hardware problem. I emailed you back and would be happy to put a final diagnosis or repair on the devil phone.

[Q] Bricked My Phone :-(

Hi
I tried to upgrade my phone, I9000s, from 2.3 to 2.4 this afternoon via Odin and it has gone wrong and I think I have bricked the phone.

Can anybody advise me what I do next.

u mean from 2.3.3 to 2.3.4. so the mistake is
when u turmed ur phone to download mode and connect to pc . Odin didnt regonized ur phone and u press start ? as many ppl want flash fast .
so try this
1st : Move ur battery out . plug ur phone to recharge w/o battery if ur screen turn on . then press vol down+home+power . if not do the same with battery .
if those doesnt work check the :
2nd : remove battery . open Kies to ur PC plug ur phone with USB cable to connect with ur pc , w8 some mins to regonize ur phone if ur screen trying to get on plug the battery to ur phone to recharge via pc then try to get download mode . if nothing of those doesnt work for u then u must
3rd Buy USB JIG from ebay or get ur phone to service (if u had rooted phone u will pay)
It happened to me before...
The only solution was buying a jig on ebay to unbrick the phone.
Before that i sent my phone to repairs and it was solved.
Good luck

its really rare to screwed ur main bootloader on the SGS.. maybe you could buy the jig but i`ve never tried the jig but maybe you could try to take out your battery and wait a couple of minutes.. maybe half hour to be safe, before you try to switch on your phone.. but after you place back the battery make sure you doesnt touch any button except the 3 button combo for download mode.. i`m not sure why but that has been the case for me when i got screwed during flashing new rom when i push other button such as the home button before the 3 button combo the phone just didnt respond..

Hi
Thanks for all the replies, sorry I have not been back on.
Not sure how I managed it, but I got back to the point of the yellow download symbol again and flashed the stock 2.3 Gingerbread I had on file.
All is now working again but it is showing as 2.3.4.
Something has obviously got mixed up though, as I am in the UK and now have Swisscom on start up and close down.
It all appears to be working ok and after a while I managed to root it again.
I suppose I should really looking in to flashing it again so I don't have the Swisscom coming up, but I will leave it as it is until I feel a little more brave after my near miss.
Thanks again.

Hi
Could somebody point me to the correct version of 2.3.4 for the UK for me to flash.

Also, on checking my phone, it is marked as CSC unkown, it that something I need to worry about.

[Q] computer wont recognize phone after gingerbread

... and two buttons have different function; back and search.
i am from canada and have an unlocked galaxy s gt -i9000 (sgh-i896). its originally on rogers ut i use fido on it. it was rooted and running fine on froyo. then i think i stupidly upgraded with some wrong files. two buttons don't work and the computer will only recognize it as a memory stick when i have the micro sd in. it goes in to download mode, but the computer doesn't see it, in both oden and kies. i have tried with usb debugging. nada. the reception is horrible. im new to androids and have searched many forms. i keep getting close to the answer but its not for my device.
pda i9000xwjvz
phone i9000xxjvt
csc i9000oxajvt.
i searched around and found that the "i9000xxjvt" is for the uk captivate. seeing as i live in canada and this is a rogers phone i see this as being a possible problem?
i have done a factory data reset. no good. is there any way to update or downgrade so that i can start messing around with my phone again?
i hope you can help

The i9000 and the i896 are different phones. You can't simply flash files for the other one and expect them to fully work, unless they are made for that purpose. The i897-i896 is Captivate, i9000 is the Galaxy S.
Make sure you have Odin open first, then plug in. I recommend trying a one click back to stock

and im a little confused. on the back of my phone it says i896 and when i boot up it says gt-i9000? so how are they different?
**update
so im trying 1 click from a new computer and no good.
is there a way to reinstall an os from the memory stick?
U have an i896 phone that has a ported i9000 rom flashed on it.
That is all.
U may want to give Heimdall a try. It uses different drivers and so may work where Odin hasn't.

It actually sounds like he has an unported firmware. That's why the buttons don't work right. You also have different bootloaders. Download mode can be achieved by turning phone off (pulling the battery then replacing it is easiest way). Then hold volume down (not volume up and down) and plugging usb in. As for drivers, uninstall the drivers you have. Look in program files for a folder labeled Samsung and delete it. Restart your computer. Reinstall drivers. As said, Heimdall might be a better route to take since it uses a different driver.

You have a Rogers Captivate that has i9000 bootloaders on it. If you didn't flash them, then somebody else did before you bought it. I think you are trying to run unported i9000 ROMs. i9000 roms only work if somebody reorients the kernel and modifies a few parts of the ROM.
Anyway, download mode on i9000 bootloaders (from powered off state) is Vol down + USB. Then... well what do you want to put on it? Stock i896 Gingerbread?
yeah id like stock i896 gingerbread. i have no problem going in to download mode.
ill try heimdall and get back to you guys.
usoimon this
so i tried with hiemdall and tried to find my phone is zadig but no luck.
i can go in to download mode no problem. do i possibly have to get the i9000 driver for my computer. and if yes which one in particular?

Read through that again. The same driver package should work for i896,i897, i9000.
Try a different cable, and make sure to use the proper usb port.
ive tried all my usb ports, new usb wire, different computers. ive followed may walk troughs. uninstalled and reinstalled a bunch of different driver packs.
phone goes in to download mode no problem every time. but both odin and heimdall don't recognize.
when the phone is powered up it goes in to usb mode and says connected but on the computer the usb doesn't see anything. no pop ups in the tray or anything.
id this a lost cause? am i missing something? im usually pretty good with this kind of stuff...
*update.
ive been reading all over the internet and have found that it may be a hardware issue. maybe happening randomly after i had installed the gingerbread.
is there a way that anyone would know of to update my firmware through wifi blue tooth or micro sd?
FIXXXXED!! woohoo
so i went to my brothers who sold me the phone and it worked immediately. i guess his computer remembered it. i dont know why nothing worked on my 3 computers with all the drivers and stuff that i tried. thank you for all the help.
