Google Voice as your VM. - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just recently started using GV for my voicemails (TMO)
Loved it...
My problem is that I only use my GV number for specific functions/people.
If I missed an incoming call it was easy to tell if the person was calling my cel or my GV. But with GV as my VM service I cant differentiate.
All my calls now appear in the GV app. Is there anyway to figure out which number the person is trying to reach while still using GV as my VM ?

No, and why should it? As long as they're contacting you, why does it matter which number they're dialing?
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App

What you cold do (just speculation) is have a forwarding app that separates via contacts, if XYZ contact calls you then it conditional forwards it to your GV voicemail other wise if ABC contact calls then it routes you to your default VM. Im not sure there is an app to do this but i cant imainge there not being a call forwarding app.

Then why have 2 numbers since theyre just dialing me anyways ?
Some people I will pick up for others I will send to VM. Id like to know who the new number is trying to reach my "work" persona or my "home" persona.
Ill look into call forwarding.
This would be moot if Tmo visual voicemail worked over wifi or GV had the same bubble for incoming as it does for outgoing.

so has anyone added this number as a Fav or free number for incoming and calling like a pick 5 or something? and when people call your GV number then have it forward to your cell and when it comes in its the GV number so its a free incoming call and free outgoing call also?
has anyone done this or doing this?
which dialer are you using if you are?
anyone? try this?

Use your tablet as a phone. Calls? Texts? No problem!

Toktumi has finally released their Line2 app for android. I've been using it for a couple of months with my iPod touch 4G and love it. I tried it with the G tablet and it fully works. You pay a monthly fee and you get a phone number with unlimited calls and text in the US and Canada I think. Yes you can make and recieve calls and texts using your tablet! Go check it out they offer a 30 day free trial.

Does not show up on Market. Where else can we find the .apk?
Thanks
I think that it's "tOktumi" (http://toktumi.com/)?
Jim
I'm going to check this out
Many of us would like to check it out, but is it showing up in Market for anyone? If so, can someone post it somewhere (free apk)
Thanks
what is the diff between this and google voice?
Google voice lets you send and receive text using your tablet. However, when somebody calls your Google voice number the call gets automatically redirected to the phone number(s) you linked GV to. Line2 gives you a unique telephone number so when somebody texts or calls you, your tablet gets the actual call. Line2 also lets you forward calls to any number but you have to manually set it up in the app preferences.
PM me if you have any other questions.

Hi,
I just installed sipdroid, and it created a pbxes.org acct, and I can call out, but called party can hear me, but I can't hear them. Any ideas how to fix this?
Also on the sipdroid website, it has screenshots, showing a dialpad, but I only get 2 text boxes, for # to call, and 'called address'?
Pressing on the icon on upper right, I get an FC.

Answering my 1st question, after establishing a call, I press menu, then 'speakers', and then I can hear.
Also tried w Bluetooth headset, and that worked.
Still no keypad though.

Fyi, I just figured out how to get incoming call working also. What I had to do was go to Google.com/voice, login, and under settings>>phones check the Google chat checkbox. After that incoming calls to my Google voice # come to sipdroid on my gtab. So now I can do both incoming and outgoing calls with sipdroid!

That seems like a separate problem (BT headset connecting), so you might be better off posting a question about that separately, probably in the General forum. I think I've seen some threads about BT connecting there, so you may want to search there 1st. I'm on stock TNT still, but maybe it may depend on which firmware you have also.

What is your inbound routing in pbxes? mine was set as
username-extension to pick inbound calls.
I believe at GV side, there shouldn't be any change to existing set up.
Make sure at "calls" tab, it is not set as "call screening"
And at GV setting, Phones tab, select "Google Chat" as one of the forwarding target.
Then your sipdroid will under the hood of "Google Chat" for this matter.
When you test, make sure use another number, not anything related to GV or sipdroid.
check green light status of sipdroid.
Hope it works!

sure they need. that is how I test my inbound calls.
but on settings, you need to link gchat in your gv setup.
which part you are not sure with?
i mean don't use your gv linked phone to test calling your gv number see if sipdroid will ring. that will result to voice mail directly

Just now in outbound trunk I have one GTalk.
The setup of GTalk is in Trunck Settings.
Basically
account
username
password is EXACTLY same with my [email protected] and password for that account.
well, when I installed my Sipdroid, it asked me to link with my GTalk. That was the moment I keyed in my gtalk username and log in. It populated in this pbxes setting.

I got it I had Google talk pointing to the dell streak number instead of my cell which I had associated . So when someone calls my gV I get the call on my streak and when they call my cell number I get it on my cell.

@jiwengang what are your settings for call clarity on sipdroid? cause mines works like complete **** over a 4G connection
I use Groove IP + Gvoice on my DS7-TMO. Works great for both in/outbound with Wifi and 3/4G. Also use NetTalk or Viber as back up (both are free). Use Heywire or Text+ as SMS. DS7 can now call, receive, send SMS etc.. like a real smart phone.

Google Voice for text?

How exactly does Google voice work? I want to set it up for text so I don't have to pay att the 20 dollars a month for unlimited text. For calls I'll stick with carrier I don't know how much data a call will eat up.

You're going to want to Google that from your computer. You need to set it up from there

keep in mind that mms also goes over text plan, so any mms would have to be google voice as well.
I really don't text much right now I pay 5 bucks for 200 text. But when I upgrade soon it seems I'll have a choice between $20/month for unlimited text or .20 cent for every text. Just wondering if Google voice is a better alternative.

gVoice does not work that way! A call is still a call, why go through the extra effort to make something VoIP when the current system for wireless audio transmission works very well. Google is never going to make the Android app do VoIP.
Also gVoice does not support MMS, thanks to social media sites/apps and web browers on the phone, there is no reason for gVoice to support them. Again another system exists that does a better job. The purpose to gVoice is not to bypass the services that wireless providers offer, it is to make managing multiple numbers an easier process (just as the video says). One other thing is that gVoice does not work with other text servers, only actual phone numbers. So no texting "LOL" to 12345 to vote for something on TV.
As to "how exactly" it works. Simply put gVoice is a redirection service.
They give you a what is essentially a mobile number that you hand out to whomever you wish, then you tell gVoice what numbers you want it to contact when it's number is called or gets a text. With the app it automaticaly adds your cell number to the list.
A call works like this: Person A dials the gVoice number, a computer answers and calls you, you answer and person A is forwarded to you. The exact opposite is true for the other direction. You > computer > person & forwards. If you watched the video explaining gVoice then you'll see that you can have gVoice dial multiple numbers at once on in-coming calls.
A text works like this: Person A sends a text to the gVoice number, a computer receives the text. At this point, it can either send you a text acting exactly the same as a call, or you can have it do nothing and rely on the app to let you know a text was sent to gVoice. Sending a text via the app is just like posting something via twitter or such except that instead of it going to a web site it goes to a computer that sends a text back to Person A. gVoice will figure out how to break up the message on its own for the size limit of a text, if sending to another gVoice number it sends the whole message and one piece.
If you want more exact then that you'll have to ask Google.
Now, due to the nature of the system there are a lot of neat/useful/mean things you can do. you can have gVoice block numbers instead of relying on the carrier. you can have all calls from one grouping of people get redirected to a specific number (to only your cell, or only to home, maybe even to one that is not actually yours ). you can set up some groups to be forwarded immediately, and others be given a prompt (your end) to screen their calls. you can save yourself from needing text messaging by relying on the app. you can give specific groups a different recording that they hear when they call and have to leave a message (if you use gVoice as your voicemail). Or you can do like me, and give some people the gVoice number and others only the cell number, so that if I ever have a reason to change the cell number the gVoice users are none the wiser.
I guess the best thing to do is give it a try. If its doesn't work the way I need it to I'll guess I'll have to choose the unlimited text plan. Thanks for the info.

For what it's worth, i have the $5 / 200 text plan + Google voice. I use the AT&T mms on the 200 texts and Google voice for everything else. It works great for me because i can send text messages from my browser when i can't use my phone (plus i type faster on a full keyboard), and i don't have to worry about overages. I don't call that much, so minutes aren't an issue.
I liked that voice let he pick a number that made sense to me.
Also, if someone sends an mms to your Google voice number, you can have it set up to go to your gmail.
I use Google voice as a separate thing. I have a tmobile pay as you go plan on my captivate. As long as I have wifi. I get free texting through Google voice. Note, you get a separate number assigned by area. Porting your own number costs 20 bucks.

Anybody using Google Voice for Voicemail on Verizon?

Curious if anyone is using Google Voice as their primary voicemail on Verizon? On my S6 Edge I have a Google Voice account and a GV phone number but only calls going to my GV phone number use GV Voicemail. Can I convert to use GV for all my voicemail, including my Verizon phone number? Seems every time I've had a new device and installed Google Voice it asks if I want to use it for my primary VM and when I say yes it says something about Verizon being evil (who didn't know that) and I've never gotten any further.....
Any advice appreciated.

Yes, I'm using without any issue. Been using it for years since my S3 days.
Set up or remove Google voicemail
i had so many issues getting it right on the S6 that after years of using it i just setup Verizons Voicemail
I moved away from GV on my S6E because I found I liked VVM better. GV's voicemail to text kind of sucked and I always had to listen to my messages anyway. Sorry - getting off topic. I'm sure you know this but just in case:
To Activate Google Voice:
Follow these steps to have your mobile phone use Google Voice for voicemail instead of your carrier's voicemail. You can always go back to using your carrier's voicemail later if you want, by entering another code. Learn more here.
Enter the following exactly as written, as if you are dialing someone:
*71-[your Google Voice number]
Press "Send" or "Call" on your phone to dial that number. The phone will appear to make a call and then hang up. When that is completed, you are done!
To Deactivate Google Voice:
Dial *73 and press Send.
