hackers already found a way to put custom roms into droid x (locked bootloader). it's a matter of time before the method being applied to other moto phones since they are almost the same.

Unfortunately, these are not "real" ROMs, as they can't replace the kernel or bootloader. For many people this will be enough, if you just want to remove crapware or install JIT, app2sd etc, but they can't do anything you couldn't already do with root access, they just simplify it.
However, there won't be any Froyo ROM:s until an official Froyo ROM is available.
the theunlockr have root the older XT701
http://theunlockr.com/2010/08/11/how-to-root-the-motorola-xt701/
and load a custom rom on the motorola xt701
http://theunlockr.com/2010/08/11/how-to-load-a-custom-rom-on-the-motorola-xt701/
can we do the same way to XT720 ?
I'm very interested to know if this is true too!

If it's Droid then it's for CDMA. I don't think it's a good idea to try it on Milestone.
This has been repackaged as a ROM. It will not work on the milestone, under any circumstances.
Could a moderator or the OP perhaps re-title this thread in light of the fact that the update in question will not work on a Milestone?

Question is pertaining specifically with the title. It specifically states "DROID" and the question addresses if this will somehow work due to it being signed by motorola.
Perhaps, it will be helpful if there is a developer who can torn the package not to include the radio which is the only difference of milestone to a droid.

The title of this post seems to suggest that we, the Milestone owners, can accomplish this installation and it would somehow invite us to do so.
Motorola signed the Droid firmware to run on a Droid, not a Milestone. There are additional internal hardware differences beyond the radio, and there are software differences that permeate several components of the OS.

If it were so cut and dried, we'd have custom roms by the butt load.
It isn't
I really wish people would stop assuming that life is simple because almost every other android device has custom roms...
The milestone could have custom roms right now and it wouldn't make a difference, because we couldn't load them.
Here is how to update your motorola droid to android 2.2 froyo FRF84B.

Per your request, title has now been changed.
Moved to general since it isn't related to development.
This will not work on Milestone, it is built for Droid which is CDMA. Droid and Milestone are two different devices, they require completely different ROMs. There is no Froyo ROM for Milestone out there yet, neither official nor leaked.
Please be patient.
Thanks
What is the limitations of us porting ROMs from the Droid to the Milestone? Based on my research, both platforms are the same and the hardware is either identical or silimar (but 99% matching, with the exception of the Droid's CDMA radio).
I'd really like to see CyanogenMod on the Milestone, I think it would be a great ROM to have a play with. I just wanted to ask you guys and girls about it, before I run off and blow things up.
Please, no n00b comments. I know the Milestone and Droid are different (Milestone has a 600Mhz CPU and the Droid has a 550Mhz CPU?) and they both are GSM and CDMA respectively, but yeah.
Cheers,
Coburn.
You're right, they are extremely similar devices. The primary reason why this isn't possible is due to the locked bootloader - various checks are in place to make sure that the phone will only boot a kernel specifically built for the Milestone by Motorola.
Attempting to flash any Droid rom will result in a device that won't boot - you'll have to flash it with a stock sbf or with a nandroid backup, if your recovery still works.
A small correction, both the Droid and Milestone have identical CPUs. They're both 600MHz Cortex A8's, underclocked to 550MHz.
Yes, it will be possible when OUR bootloader will be unlocked. Works around KEXEC gave to us hope

im still a nub when it comes to this moto stuff - how is the milestone bootloader being locked different to the dext?
Weird, u said its an A8 processor but an app I have called OSmonitor states that it an ARMV7, unless their just the same...

ARM is the instruction set (What the CPU says)
Cortex A8 is the model number (What the CPU is)
The Milestone is dumb. It's a brilliant phone, but dumb.
A bad headphone jack, crippling lack of an unlocked bootloader, and silly reboots/wake up problems prohibit it from being epic.
Everything else is amazing.
Thats not so correctly !
In Europe is that not possible because its the different between GSM and CDMA !!
The Droid have CDMA and the Milestone in Europe have GSM ! Iam loocking for the develop Bootloader to flash other Roms on Milestone !!
When everybody have a idea or the answer ....pleas send me an PN !!
My friend is writing his new Programm its called recalc !! News comming soon .....

i've pm you the link with the developer bootloader.
best regards
(no n00b comment mode) all discussions about locking/unlocking of milestone - must be only after you read info from this site http://and-developers.com/motorola_milestone
Enjoy!
P.S. developer bootloader (mbm v.90.80 dont let for you run unsigned kernel. seriously.) and if you try flash it - you can just brick your phone. You warned.
Is it possible yet/ever? Or is it still locked?
Links would be great if it is possible!
Thanks, and sorry! I'm a n00b :x
Full root? I thought root was already obtained? Or do you mean unlocking the boot loader? Because that is unlikely never to happen.
Sent from my Milestone using XDA App
Full root's been around since as long as this device has been out, it was released within weeks of it being publicly available.
If you mean an unlocked bootloader allowing full, kernel-modifying ROMs, no, that is not and never will be available. Much like the Droid X, it is just a lost cause and will likely lead to Motorola's inevitable almost-bankruptcy, for the second time.
Alright thanks, what is the purpose of rooting my device if overclocking isn't possible without kernel access? Or is it? What custom roms are available?
Overclocking is possible with root. If i understand correct it is done through a kernel module. Custom roms can be found all over this forum (just look for threads starting with ROM in their name). You'll need to get OpenRecovery working to use them.

Ok little question : I have had a HTC hero for more that 2 years and I will probably receive my brand new Motorola Milestone tomorrow.
So there is one thing I don't understand : I heard that the bootloader of the milestone is still locked so we can't flash roms or whatever by update.zip method so we use nandroid backups.
Most roms I saw for milestone are using nandroid but cyanogenmod 6.0 uses an update.zip .
My concern is for modding roms like themeing etc ...
Is bootloader unlocked since vulnerable recovery release ?
Is this rom using an alternative method ?
Thank's for your assistance
Yes,Your concerns are all right,The Nexus One is the own son of Google, and our Milestone is the son of a *****

Well said )
please no flaming not sure if dumb question or not,,,
I have a droid 1 and understand I am in milestone forums..
My problem is i love my droid but want non aosp roms like the motoblur your guys over here have made.. im trying to ask a simple question of can i and how can i install a milestone motoblur rom on my droid? I am extremely willing to learn how to port over as i do understand that the milestones have a locked bootloader and droids do not. If ANYONE can help me with porting i have some knowledge of rom modifying but not enough to port over a gsm locked bootloader rom to a cdma unlocked bootloader phone...
Please please help and yes I understand my crap is old. I just love it and am a lil to poor to go get a new one, so its out of the question for me and i love the build of my hardened MAN-phone
