Ok guys, people seem to be having problems using the LCD Density changer app, so I am making this write up to help you out
If you would like to make your Droid X look like this...

}
Then follow these steps.
Method 1 - ADB
1. Download LCD Density w/ 2.2 market Fix - This also contains the 2.2 market fix (without the stagefright)
2. Put the build.prop in your android-sdk\tools folder
3. Connect your phone via usb, make sure it shows up with adb devices
4. adb remount
5. adb push build.prop /system/build.prop
6. adb reboot
Method 2 - Root Explorer
1. Copy the build.prop to the root of your SD card
2. Long press on build.prop
3. Select "Copy"
4. Navigate to /system
5. Click R/W in the top right corner
6. Paste, and overwrite
7. Reboot
Your screen will now look like this, giving you much more space. And If using ADW launcher, you can use 6 X 5 rows of icons!!
Now if you really like to do things yourself, in the build.prop..
Change
ro.sf.lcd_density=240
to
ro.sf.lcd_density=200
push, reboot.
If you want to revert back, just push this Stock Build prop back into place.
Credit to the guy who made LCD Density app, but it did not work with Droid X phone and koush's recovery installed. People had to SBF, so this post was necessary.
does this change the resolution ? does it affect any apps from running correctly ?
Looks great, I think I'd like to try it. Just want to make sure it's safe I guess.

Jacked mine up.. the method works fine, the only problem is that apps are completely screwy now.. the apps only show up in the original size so if your screen is 4 inches the app is only displaying in like 2.5 inches of space and the rest is just black now, also cause some fuzziness with some various icons in the notification bar ( battery etc).. definately gonna revert back

Only seemed to have resolution problems in the root explorer app, all other apps work fine Aside from that, i think 200 is probobly a little on the low side, may try 220 or 230 for a improvement
Yea I love it but a few of my apps are also little now. I'm gonna rock it tonight and see how I feel in the morning.

Worked well for me as well.
Thanks very much.
FYI
I couldnt adb remount (got an error, not sure why but whatever)
I had to boot into recovery, then do an
Code:
adb shell
then just (assuming your modified build.prop is on the sdcard root)
Code:
mv /sdcard/build.prop /system
exit & reboot!
230 was a good middle ground
Yeah, I like how it looks mostly but some apps don't strech which is kinda annoying. I'll give it a shot for a day or two and see what I think.

I am having a problem with my screen, this has been a ongoing thing for a while now. I am running cm6 extremely blue from the 19th of Oct, no kernel mod. When I do a clean install my screen displays all images just fine. After a few days some images start looking really bad, instead of the colors blending they become bands of different colors. Its really hard to explain so I attached a screenie of the XDA app, the brown looks horrible. I know thats not the way it is as I have seen the colors blend together, no thick color lines. I ant figure it out for the life of me, is this happening on everyones phones? I dont recall it runnng Fresh rom, and like I said it takes a couple days for it to start happening on cm6. I found a few things in awd launcher that I can disable to help the situation, like wallpaper hack, scrolling widget support, turning these off and or on will help it look better on desktop, but on apps I found nothing to help improve. Could something need editing in the XML files? Or are we all seeing these lines and just dealing with them? Any feedback is appreciated
Oh, and once it starts this even a nandroid back to when it was fine doesnt help. Only a clean install does.
and happens with both apps2sd and internal storage.

This is not occurring on my pictures, gallery. My home screen is fine, as well as calendar widget. Thoroughly in handcent the gray bar up top has the color lines, slacker also has it toward the bottom where it get brighter. Could it be something in framework, maybe I can edit some sort if default setting to use 16 bit, because it looks like 8 bit graphics

I sound like your talking about dithering, like instead of something that should be a gradient it is instead broken up and where you would normally see a smooth transition from a color to color its broken with lines.
Heres some suggestions
cm settings > performance settings : enable surface dithering (which improves image quality but slows the phone some what).
reboot you phone at least once a day.
your screen density might be to high (or low) in your build.prop file.
Updated to extremely blue Oct 25 and problem is gone. Chances are in 2 or 3 days it will be back though

I had set build prop to 150 on all three, the 3rd being default. This has been a issue for some time now. I will leave build prop alone and see what happens. You are exactly right about what I am trying to explain the issue is. Can I set to 150, and what else can or can not be changed? Changing the default density to 150 was something I had never done before, screen would do this at the default 160 as well.

Are you saying your phone is running for a couple of days and then it does it, cause I daily reboot is highly recommended. The phone just doesn't have the internal memory to render the graphics on images with alot of colors.
I would try a 140 on the density.

Well yes and no, it will happen after a few days but I do reboot daily, sometimes a few reboots per day. When I edit build prop I am using Root Explorer, it saves the old file. Should I delete this file, maybe it us confusing the system? Also can I edit the default setting to 140? Thank you for your help and concern

Build prop it is! I tried 140 and still messed up so I tried changing the default to 140 also. That did not help I took all three settings back to 160 and my screen went back to clean and clear. Why can others change the dpi, am I needing to changes something else along with the 2 numbers?
Thank You!

For anyone who doesn't know, this is a neat and simple trick to make the items on your screen bigger or smaller:
EASY WAY (it will keep the setting until you do a hard reset-- holding the power down for 10 or so seconds until it powers off):
1. Download LCDDensity for Root (free) from Market
2. Change density based on your preferences (higher # = bigger items, lower resolution; lower # = smaller items, higher res)
MORE ADVANCED WAY (if you want the change to survive a hard reboot):
1. In root explorer, navigate to system/ and backup your build.prop file.
2. Set system to r/w
3. Hold down on the original file, and select open in text editor
4. Find the two entries where it says:
ro.sf.lcd_density.xdpi=169.33333
ro.sf.lcd_density.ydpi=169.33333
If you wanted your density to be 250, you'd change them to the following single line:
ro.sf.lcd_density=250
5. Save, reboot, and enjoy your NC's new look.
Here are a couple of my homescreens set at 250:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
Now, jacking up your LCD density much above 200 will make your status bar look wonky and cut-off. One solution for this is to set it to 250, like above (by changing build. prop - I think the app I mentioned only allow multiples of 20), which will make it look clean (as long as wifi is on). The only problem there is that you'll lose your status bar clock and Notifications in portrait mode ...
... the solution for THIS is to get two apps: hellostatusbar, and quick launch. Set quick launch to open hellostatusbar on a home-button double press, and it will display your Notifications.
FYI the Galaxy Tab's default is 240

The free one, LCDDensity for Root, doesn't keep the change after doing a full (battery pull) reboot. To me, this is less than ideal, but if you don't mind changing it again, knock yourself out.
A battery pull reboot on a NOOKcolor? Don't you need a screwdriver for that?

I believe he is using the phone example for reference. In the case of the NC, the free option should be a good alternative for those not wanting to modify scripts.
Anyway, thanks for providing the entries to change manually. It's a good tip.

Yeah, good point - not sure if a power-button-long-hold hard reset would be the equivalent on a Nook or not. If it is only a battery pull that would do it, then you would indeed need a screwdriver and a little bit of masochism for that to be a problem.
EDIT: the long power button hold reset DOES make the free app lose the setting
If anyone's interested in getting the density more like the Galaxy Tab's without having an ugly, cut-off looking status bar in portrait mode (with a couple sacrifices), here's a little work-around I came up with (if you're using softkeys mapped to double-tap of home button, this isn't for you):
1. Set density to 250 using the build.prop editing method. Reboot.
2. Get a market app called HelloStatusBar.
3. Get a market app called QuickLaunch. Open it and set home button double-tap to open HelloStatusBar.
You'll lose your status bar clock, and it'll look ugly with wifi off, but with wifi on, it'll be nice and clean like the pic below:
Your Notifications will be gone, but now you can double-tap home to bring them up:
Very useful and thanks for sharing!

I'm not familiar with the paid version, so I can't really comment on that.
That's ADW EX launcher, with the browser, email, and app drawer icons from the Galaxy Tab. Not sure if Samsung's launcher icons are open source, so I won't post them (PM'd). . .
So wait the galaxy tab comes stock with the screen virtualized to be a different resolution than it actually is?
adwlauncher ex has adjustable icon sizes. You can adjust so icons are a nice size and not interfere with the dock. As if you needed another reason for ex!

I am using LCD Density Changer at 190. Works great.
I manually changed mine to 141, an opposite reaction to many. By doing this I can get 4-5 items in the notification area on the right and things are not too small on the screen.

You don't need the SPB launcher to get that theme. The 3D stuff in the middle is just that certain launcher. What you want is the notification bar theme right? I don't have it myself, as I don't use those themes, but I would suggest using the UOT kitchen and you can cook it yourself. It's pretty easy to figure out and get your own themes up and running.
http://uot.dakra.lt/
I took some time and threw together what I THINK you're looking for... it was actually quite a bit more work than I thought it would be, but I just tested this out on my Nexus S (i9020a) on the latest CM7.1 Nightly (b. 180) and it worked fine.
I'd recommend backing up your Androidian.apk just in case something goes wrong, or even a full nand backup. You'll need to push this apk to /system/app and make sure permissions are set properly.
Here's what I did to set it:
1 - Use Root Explorer (or another file manager with root access) and go to /system/app
2 - Make sure the directory is mounted as RW
3 - Rename Androidian.apk to Androidian.apk.bak
4 - Browse to where you saved the modified APK on your SDCard and Copy/Move the modified apk to /system/app
5 - Set permissions (rw-r--r--)
6 - Reboot phone.
7 - Once phone is back up, go to Theme Manager and select Androidian.apk and apply.
8 - Hope it works for you like it did for me

I THINK I got what you're wanting. I attached two screenshots with what I've managed so far. This will basically remove those bars from anywhere they'd normally show up (Settings menus, Messaging app, pop up menus, etc...). The screenshots show the Settings menu and the Power menu (I clear my messages daily so nothing in Messages to show but a black window).
Unfortunately, I haven't gotten it to work in a theme yet, but I can get it working with a morph, or you can yank the files and merge them manually if you know how, it's not too difficult. I'll keep poking around the theme files and see if I can get this put into the one I uploaded earlier. The morph is NoDividers.zip (attached).
WOW! This $hi+$ AMAZING! I can't THANK YOU enough! Best thing about this morph is that I can use ANY theme without those pesky dividers! Really NEAT man!
I really recommend this to anyone who love David's MinimalBread and Sonny Sekhon's Lucid.
[Update: Screenshots below]
I just installed the latest update for Android Market (was v3.0.27 now v3.1.3).
First things I checked out were the Announced +1 buttons and PIN lock for Purchases features but I've noticed something else interesting.
First thing I noticed was that everything is slightly bigger (My PixelDensity is the same as before the update). Next thing I noticed is when I went to the Apps section, is that the Categories now Pull out into a Side-Pane instead of their own screen. But the most interesting thing I noticed is that instead of getting the "Staff Picks" screen, I get "Staff Picks for Tablets". To me it seems the App Market now detects your screen size and adjusts some things accordingly.
This can be a Good thing and a Bad thing. Good because tablet designed Apps(including the Market UI tweaks) do look better on the Nook's screen but also Bad because it could alow Google to adjust things depending on Device even more, ie: certain phone apps might only show up on "Phone sized" screens.
What do you guys think of the new Market Update(v3.1.3)?

Here's the Fix.
If you don't see "Movies" category or the "Videos" app in the New Market here's a Fix.
NOTE: DO NOT USE IF USING OLD MARKET!!
If you have issues return it back to 161!
Root Explorer Method
1. Clear Market data in Application Info
2. Navigate to System folder in Root Explorer and "Mount R/W"
3. Long-press build.prop and "Open in Text Editor"
4. Find "qemu.sf.lcd_density=161" or "ro.sf.lcd_density=161" and change it to 160
5. Reboot
6. Run Market
File Expert Method
1. Clear Market data in Application Info
2. Navigate to /System folder in File Expert
3. Menu-->More-->Mount-->Mount as ReadWrite
4. Copy build.prop to sdcard
5. Press build.prop, Open as Text, Select a Text Editor
6. Find "qemu.sf.lcd_density=161" or "ro.sf.lcd_density=161" and change it to 160, now Save
7. Copy build.prop back to /System, Overwrite when asked
8. Reboot
9. Run Market
If it doesn't work try Clearing the Market data again.
This should allow you to see most missing Apps and Access the Movies category.
If you lose Movies in the Future just Clear the Market data and it'll work again.

...to a different problem. The issue with My Apps is the reason CM7 defaults to 161 in the first place, and only applies to those who have already applied the 160 dpi fix. In a CM7 NC set to 160 dpi, My Apps will eventually display only a white space, requiring us go to the Market's App Info and hit Clear Data again.
AFAIK, we're more likely to see a fix for the limited market than for the My Apps issue.
One thing many people seem to miss: any app's individual App Manager page is accessible by longpressing the app shortcut and choosing App Info.
Japzone, you're doing people a disservice by failing to mention that the fix does not persist once the market app does its data update, which occurs at least once a day.
Edit: damn, once again, ninja'ed by the lizard...

I know about the Icon long-press shortcut but the app screen sits on scanning for awhile, instead I pull-up Titanium Backup as it's usually quicker.
Now concerning the Market My App issues with 160dpi, personally I'd rather deal with the occasional data wipe then the Oversized UI of 240dpi but that's me. Sorry if I seemed misleading.

Any advice? Changing back to stock DPI doesn't fix the issue...

If you go into chrome, try rotating both clockwise and counter clockwise. No black bar? Do you have dots on the keyboard near where the predictive text is? Maybe changing via ADB messed it up (as opposed to editing the build.prop) and I am going to have to flash the factory image. I don't think a FDR will do it correct?
I'm on stock rooted. I used Root Explorer to change my DPI to 493. I have absolutely no issues. I just tried using Chrome in both portrait and landscape mode and neither had any "black bar" like you are reporting.

Nope. You're right. If i rotate it to the right i get a black bar. But, why would you ever rotate this way? It is essentially the same as using the phone upside down...

You wouldn't ever naturally rotate this way, but we are an OCD bunch. Now that I know it exists it drives me crazy.
Do you have three dots while typing, for example, in hangouts.

Ha! Really? I'm definitely OCD about my phone functioning exactly as it should, but the black bar appearing when doing something I've literally never done before, doesn't bother me at all.
I'm seeing 3 dots directly underneath whatever the current selected word is in the predictive text. If this is what you are talking about I'd consider this more of a wanted feature than a bug, though.

On mine the dots are huge and eclipse the word. Also seems like the keyboard is still at stovk dpi. Its huge.
See attachment for dots
Maybe it has to do with changing (or trying to) change a system file/setting without root(system) privileges. You could always unlock, root, make your change, and then unroot and lock back up. That should still get you OTAs since you have stock recovery and all that still at that point.

I was getting annoyed by the three dots bug in the Google Keyboard as well as the top developer icon bug in the Play Store. So I tried wiping dalvik cache and cache and then tried rebooting. It fixed!
I'm not sure if this will work on the stock recovery for an unrooted device.
Shoutout to /u/einbierbitte
Edit: According to /u/chirisu you can just wipe the cache from System Settings => Storage => tap Cache and then clear it.
Don't even have to reboot, the three huge dots go away on the google keyboard.
If you rotate thephone clockwise to landscape, you get the black bar not only on Chrome, but hangouts and maps as well. Using 493 DPI.
Yep. I can confirm this. And I was about to flash factory images......

I was wondering about the dalvik format since Lollipop land uses ART, which precompiles each app at install rather than at first run.

I cleared the cache but I'm still getting the dots, but they are a little smaller. I'm at 440 DPI and do not have the black bars, but I was getting them at 480 and 500 DPI.
