For anyone who doesn't know, this is a neat and simple trick to make the items on your screen bigger or smaller:
EASY WAY (it will keep the setting until you do a hard reset-- holding the power down for 10 or so seconds until it powers off):
1. Download LCDDensity for Root (free) from Market
2. Change density based on your preferences (higher # = bigger items, lower resolution; lower # = smaller items, higher res)
MORE ADVANCED WAY (if you want the change to survive a hard reboot):
1. In root explorer, navigate to system/ and backup your build.prop file.
2. Set system to r/w
3. Hold down on the original file, and select open in text editor
4. Find the two entries where it says:
ro.sf.lcd_density.xdpi=169.33333
ro.sf.lcd_density.ydpi=169.33333
If you wanted your density to be 250, you'd change them to the following single line:
ro.sf.lcd_density=250
5. Save, reboot, and enjoy your NC's new look.
Here are a couple of my homescreens set at 250:
{

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
Now, jacking up your LCD density much above 200 will make your status bar look wonky and cut-off. One solution for this is to set it to 250, like above (by changing build. prop - I think the app I mentioned only allow multiples of 20), which will make it look clean (as long as wifi is on). The only problem there is that you'll lose your status bar clock and Notifications in portrait mode ...
... the solution for THIS is to get two apps: hellostatusbar, and quick launch. Set quick launch to open hellostatusbar on a home-button double press, and it will display your Notifications.
FYI the Galaxy Tab's default is 240

Yeah, I didn't mention it because it costs a buck. It is an easy, automated way to do it though.

The free one, LCDDensity for Root, doesn't keep the change after doing a full (battery pull) reboot. To me, this is less than ideal, but if you don't mind changing it again, knock yourself out.
A battery pull reboot on a NOOKcolor? Don't you need a screwdriver for that?

I believe he is using the phone example for reference. In the case of the NC, the free option should be a good alternative for those not wanting to modify scripts.
Anyway, thanks for providing the entries to change manually. It's a good tip.

Yeah, good point - not sure if a power-button-long-hold hard reset would be the equivalent on a Nook or not. If it is only a battery pull that would do it, then you would indeed need a screwdriver and a little bit of masochism for that to be a problem.
EDIT: the long power button hold reset DOES make the free app lose the setting
If anyone's interested in getting the density more like the Galaxy Tab's without having an ugly, cut-off looking status bar in portrait mode (with a couple sacrifices), here's a little work-around I came up with (if you're using softkeys mapped to double-tap of home button, this isn't for you):
1. Set density to 250 using the build.prop editing method. Reboot.
2. Get a market app called HelloStatusBar.
3. Get a market app called QuickLaunch. Open it and set home button double-tap to open HelloStatusBar.
You'll lose your status bar clock, and it'll look ugly with wifi off, but with wifi on, it'll be nice and clean like the pic below:
Your Notifications will be gone, but now you can double-tap home to bring them up:
Very useful and thanks for sharing!

I'm not familiar with the paid version, so I can't really comment on that.
That's ADW EX launcher, with the browser, email, and app drawer icons from the Galaxy Tab. Not sure if Samsung's launcher icons are open source, so I won't post them (PM'd). . .
So wait the galaxy tab comes stock with the screen virtualized to be a different resolution than it actually is?
adwlauncher ex has adjustable icon sizes. You can adjust so icons are a nice size and not interfere with the dock. As if you needed another reason for ex!

I am using LCD Density Changer at 190. Works great.
I manually changed mine to 141, an opposite reaction to many. By doing this I can get 4-5 items in the notification area on the right and things are not too small on the screen.

In the Market.
FYI, the free app works fine with CM7, with none of the problems described by OP, so you can use whatever looks right to you.
I am liking 200, because it makes the back arrow easier to press !

Make sure USB Debugging is enabled in Settings -> Applications -> Development.
If you're using the standard TouchWiz launcher, this morph will remove the Messaging icon from the bottom dock. To get it back, open your applications, press menu, view type, customizable. Yeah, the battery uses the HTC scale to show level, not the completely retarded Samsung scale that always shows damn near full.
This might be a dumb question, but I'm new to android so I'm gonna fire away anyways. I really prefer the way this made my notification bar look, but there is one thing that seriously bothers me up there, although it isn't directly related to this thread.
Is there any way to change the notifications for apps in the notification bar on the left side? In particular, I hate the way the juicedefender notification looks, and would like to change it to something... less colorful. Is this possible?
Short answer: Yes, if you're dead set on doing it.
Long answer: Metamorph wasn't really designed for Market apps, but it has been done. You would need to create an icon, and then build a metamorph zip around it. You could also pull the app from your computer, remove the icon, replace it with a new one, and resign the zip file. If you're not sure what you're doing, both methods will be a pain in the ass, but luckily there are plenty of tutorials on XDA.

Thanks, I sent you a PM to prevent the further derailment of the original thread.
On a more on topic note, every time I look at my notification bar I like it more and more. The battery icon does seem more accurate, and it didn't affect the brightness control swipe action.

Yes. This modifies the system framework, not the launcher. Technically this morph will work on any HDPI android phone.
What do you mean by not supporting market apps? I can't put apps on the home screen?

is there anything special I need to do to calibrate the battery icon? I'm at 67% battery right now and it's showing the same scale as the old samsung icon (i.e a sliver shaved off to denote the battery is between 50%-75%)
Do I sideload this onto my captivate or how do I install it??

Install Metamorph from the market, and move the file in the download link to your phone. There will be a folder called AndroidThemes on the root level of your SD card. Open Metamorph and locate it, the hit extract. After it extracts, select the applications you'd like to modify, or just hit Apply All.

I was explaining to a previous poster that Metamorph wasn't designed to be used to theme market apps. You can put whatever you want on the home screen. This morph just replaces the images. It doesn't change functionality at all.

It's possible that the Samsung battery fiasco runs deeper than just the images. I thought mine was showing a more realistic scale, but I could easily be mistaken.
I ran this and my phone just cut to black after applying 4/4 and now won't start?
edit: sorry, stupid, gave it time, pulled the battery, restarted... it's working fine... I just got a big over-anxious
It will soft reboot after applying the framework-res package. As long as it's allowed to run, you will be fine. If you did something stupid, such as pull the battery, you'll need to push framework-res.apk to /system/framework over ADB from recovery in order to get it to boot again.

I sat waiting for a solid 5 minutes with nothing happening. I tried holding down the power button for varying periods of time, to no avail. Plugged in/unplugged USB: nothing...
Eventually said "**** it" because it wasn't responding to anything, and pulled the battery. Replugged the battery, booted fine, the new framework installed just fine.
edit: I should note that I have removed the standard e-mail.apk (not the gmail one) and it tossed out a comment saying it wasn't there, but I assumed it would just skip it and move on (that's the only thing I could imagine that would cause it to sit at the black screen for so long)
Ok guys, people seem to be having problems using the LCD Density changer app, so I am making this write up to help you out

}
Then follow these steps.
Method 1 - ADB
1. Download LCD Density w/ 2.2 market Fix - This also contains the 2.2 market fix (without the stagefright)
2. Put the build.prop in your android-sdk\tools folder
3. Connect your phone via usb, make sure it shows up with adb devices
4. adb remount
5. adb push build.prop /system/build.prop
6. adb reboot
Method 2 - Root Explorer
1. Copy the build.prop to the root of your SD card
2. Long press on build.prop
3. Select "Copy"
4. Navigate to /system
5. Click R/W in the top right corner
6. Paste, and overwrite
7. Reboot
Your screen will now look like this, giving you much more space. And If using ADW launcher, you can use 6 X 5 rows of icons!!
Now if you really like to do things yourself, in the build.prop..
Change
ro.sf.lcd_density=240
to
ro.sf.lcd_density=200
push, reboot.
If you want to revert back, just push this Stock Build prop back into place.
Credit to the guy who made LCD Density app, but it did not work with Droid X phone and koush's recovery installed. People had to SBF, so this post was necessary.

Jacked mine up.. the method works fine, the only problem is that apps are completely screwy now.. the apps only show up in the original size so if your screen is 4 inches the app is only displaying in like 2.5 inches of space and the rest is just black now, also cause some fuzziness with some various icons in the notification bar ( battery etc).. definately gonna revert back

Worked well for me as well.
Thanks very much.
FYI
I couldnt adb remount (got an error, not sure why but whatever)
I had to boot into recovery, then do an
Code:
adb shell
then just (assuming your modified build.prop is on the sdcard root)
Code:
mv /sdcard/build.prop /system
exit & reboot!
230 was a good middle ground
Yeah, I like how it looks mostly but some apps don't strech which is kinda annoying. I'll give it a shot for a day or two and see what I think.

I am having a problem with my screen, this has been a ongoing thing for a while now. I am running cm6 extremely blue from the 19th of Oct, no kernel mod. When I do a clean install my screen displays all images just fine. After a few days some images start looking really bad, instead of the colors blending they become bands of different colors. Its really hard to explain so I attached a screenie of the XDA app, the brown looks horrible. I know thats not the way it is as I have seen the colors blend together, no thick color lines. I ant figure it out for the life of me, is this happening on everyones phones? I dont recall it runnng Fresh rom, and like I said it takes a couple days for it to start happening on cm6. I found a few things in awd launcher that I can disable to help the situation, like wallpaper hack, scrolling widget support, turning these off and or on will help it look better on desktop, but on apps I found nothing to help improve. Could something need editing in the XML files? Or are we all seeing these lines and just dealing with them? Any feedback is appreciated
Oh, and once it starts this even a nandroid back to when it was fine doesnt help. Only a clean install does.
and happens with both apps2sd and internal storage.

This is not occurring on my pictures, gallery. My home screen is fine, as well as calendar widget. Could it be something in framework, maybe I can edit some sort if default setting to use 16 bit, because it looks like 8 bit graphics

I sound like your talking about dithering, like instead of something that should be a gradient it is instead broken up and where you would normally see a smooth transition from a color to color its broken with lines.
Heres some suggestions
cm settings > performance settings : enable surface dithering (which improves image quality but slows the phone some what).
reboot you phone at least once a day.
your screen density might be to high (or low) in your build.prop file.
Updated to extremely blue Oct 25 and problem is gone. Chances are in 2 or 3 days it will be back though

I had set build prop to 150 on all three, the 3rd being default. This has been a issue for some time now. I will leave build prop alone and see what happens. You are exactly right about what I am trying to explain the issue is. Can I set to 150, and what else can or can not be changed? Changing the default density to 150 was something I had never done before, screen would do this at the default 160 as well.

I would try a 140 on the density.

I posted the link to this guide in the Homescreen snapshot thread, but I guess it will get better coverage as a separate thread. This guide is courtesy of Notto over @ Xoom Forums.
I've seen many posts by people struggling to get this to work and the common reply to date has been to persevere and it will eventually work. Notto has put together this, his shot at a detailed explanation of how to set up the vertical battery widget using Minimalistic Text with screen shots.
How to set up minimalistic battery widget
Steps
1. Download minamilisticText widget from the market
2. Touch the plus in the top right hand corner of your home screen (the add widget button) and select the 1x5 vertical widget
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
3. This will take u into the settings screen for the widget. It will always be in vertical screen. Do not change any of the settings, just hit back and go back to the home screen. Make sure the widget appeared. It should show the time in text sideways.
4. Then tap on the widget and go back into settings. (I know this sounds stupid but trust me, changing the settings right away can screw it up)
5. Set up the settings, this is the hard part everyone has trouble with
Name - change it to whatever, I chose BatteryVertical
Background - uncheck show background. This will give it a transparent look
Widget direction - left to right
for the other three under orientation make sure their all the same with center selected
Predetermined layout - select custom
Custom layout
1. First you want to long hold on the three boxes in the first row, one at a time. After selected a trash can will appear, drag and drop and the box will be remove. It should just be one row with nothing in it at this point.
2. Then you want to click on the second button on the right, the green add button, not the plus sign. This will add another row. You want to press this 9 times. This will give you a total of 10 rows. If you want 0% you can add that as well. The only difference is the extra row in this part and then font size.
3. Now you click on the plus sign on the right, this will pull up a menu. Click on the battery section on the bottom. Scroll over to battery level bar 100%. Put this on the top row. Repeat these steps for each of the battery levels. Put one % on each row, descending from the top.
Text style
Normal/Non accented - You want these both the same
Font family - default
Bold/italic - unchecked
Size - 30 for no 0 / 28 with
Case - normal
Color - white, just the default as white as possible
Use system cold - unchecked
Blur ratio - 0
Accented
Font family - default
Bold - checked
Italic - unchecked
Size - 50 without 0. / 48 with
Color - you can use whatever but I use FF118AEB under hex to match the system color as best as possible
Blur- 0
6. Hit save
This is all you need to set up the widget, it works in both landscape and horizontal. Hope this works for all of you.
I can't seem to find my saved preferences

Try setting up the widget on another screen (not Home screen) and then after setting up drag it back to the Home Screen. this seems to work for me as I also couldn't find the widget on the Home Screen after trying to set it up there.
Great job on the GUIDE!
And yes, try setting up the widget on a blank screen and then dragging it to the screen you want.
MT is not optimized for honeycomb yet and can be a bit buggy at times.
Excellent tutorial thank you! Honestly this was bugging me in how to achieve!

Is this still working for everybody? Since I applied the update a few minutes ago the meter is stuck at 100%. Rebooting didn't fix.
Same here. Fix permissions didn't help either.
yeah mine too. Ditched it for circle battery until fixed

yup, same here, stuck at 100%.
In their release notes, one of the items was Motorola "hack." Should have said Motorola break...lol.

Thanks for the heads up, so I won't be updating. Have you tried reversing the update?
Looks to be fixed now with them backing out the Motorola hack for the Xoom. My battery percentage is now correct.
Its fine now, the second update fixed it.
i just downloaded MT and I too have the battey stuck at 100% how are you guys fixing it?

Just finished publishing zMooth gesture app in android market, it will allow you to use gestures to mimic back, home, menu and power (Pro version) hardware keys.
I wrote this app to be unobtrusive by using minimum amount of screen space but at the same time be very easy and intuitive to use. If you use for couple of days you will understand how easy it is to use.
after you install the app you will see a blue area at the bottom of the screen, swipe left on this area to go back, swipe right for menu and gesture a up-arrow(^) for home.
I highly suggest that you try using different gesture length and speed, it is very sensitive at default settings.
I picked the gestures which will have least conflict/collision so that when you gesture you don't have to worry that it might fire the wrong action. The aim was to make them error resistant and build user confidence in gesturing.
you don't have to do complete swipe or draw arrow symbol correctly, just a small quick gesture will work.
The swipes don't have to be perfectly horizontal, you can do them at an angle.
Small swipe/gesture will also work, they don't have to do be as long as they were shown in screenshots.
I didn't pick any complicated gestures because back, home and menu should be achievable with out giving a second thought, after couple of days the fingers should move with least effort and finger flexion and MUST be easier than pressing buttons.

Need help or something is not working?
Support is built-in to the app, "Preferences->Help" will resolve most issues. If not resolved just contact me through "Preferences->Help->Contact Support" and I will be happy to resolve any issues. You can also use browser for FAQ / Common Issues for more info.

Please check market for updates and changes.
Sorry for the quality, I never posted videos of phone screen's before, didn't know how difficult it is to capture these screen's on video.
Omg! I was dreaming about app like this
This is my second HD2, and I'm a little paranoic about using screen-off and back key
Big thx.
Hmmm, I can't set Display Height below 20. If I set less than 20, turn off the app, this always back to 20 value.
Secondly, would be great to able to set position of the bar (not only the bottom).
klusek1985: I personally never turn off the app so never noticed it. I set min as 20 so people don't accidentally make it too small. is 20 being too obtrusive? what lcd_density are you using?.
going to sleep will be back tomorrow sometime.
I use HD2, so it is WVGA. Density is 240 (NexusOne rom)
Imo 20 value is too large for me. Maybe you can unlock full spectrum of values able to set ?
I understand an option like change color of bar etc. will be avaible on future versions ?
Again, good work
Great job man!!! I always think pressing the back button is a very extra movement... and you just save the world!!! ha ha.... thanks man for your effort! Appreciate it. I think this app is cool...
First impression is really good, I would like to see some features as:
- Ability to move the zone to anywhere on the display
- change the colour of the zone / change colour of gesture draw
- make the zone / gesture draw transparent (top priority reqeust from me )
- set the size of the "popup" box / disable bigger box?
- disable draw area if application X is running (like widgetlocker - dont need this nice app when the screen is locked) (high priority for me again )
- maybe later, add custom draws? draw a square and launch application X
If these feature will come in the future... well what should I say, that would be awesome
Really nice!
Edit: Cant find it on market yet
Edit2: Bug found:
When chaning the height I have to reenable the app otherwise I get an error "error executing gesture, please restart app"
Sometimes also happens when device gets into standby and wakes up.. (need to confirm)
Was planning some of the features you mentioned already. Thanks for feedback. App is in market now, updated the OP.
I installed from Market, and I can set 10 (size) now
Thanks for this work, it's usefull, but i've a problem with the height, i want 10, in setting it says 10, but when i do the first gesture on my home, it come back with 50 of height, and in setting, it show me 10 ???
P.S: in green, my home would be happy

I will try fixing the height issue today. (hopefully I will get some free time at work).
It's like a dream come true! Thank you! Please keep updating this!
This is really handy!
But I would like to have home on gesture up, instead of having to draw an arrow.
Left:back
right:menu
up:home
Heck, if there's time. Why not let us create ur own gestures for app-launching ect?
And transparancy would be nice, but I see that's already been suggested.
Even if you decide not to do this, I think I'll keep this app on my phone.

you don't have to really draw the complete arrow (or left/right swipe), just do quick gesture up and down. up arrow is like home symbol(like roof of your house).
try to decrease length/time of gesture and see how sensitive and easy it is. I put long lines in screen shots just to show for beginners.
version 1.0.4 pushed to market, hopefully fixes height issues that you guys are having.
Thanks for the update, now, i can have height on 10 ...
Sorry, but in green, it's possible ?
Great application, fast and smooth. Only I can't lock on sense rom...
Very nice app. Just one suggestion. Isn't it more intuitive to swipe up to access menu? Usually the menu will slide up from bottom of screen so I think it's more natural to swipe up?
Awesome App, i was tired of pressing the home button on my hd2.
On an hd2 running typhoons 3.0.1
^ goes to home screen
Left does nothing
Right brings up the menu
Zmooth 1.04
ya since menu slides up gesture should be slide up, you can actually slide up inclined as shown in below screenshot to pull up the menu.
I picked the gestures which will have least conflict/collision so that when you gesture you don't have to worry that it might fire the wrong action. The aim was to make them error resistant and dependable.
