Can the Galaxy apps operate without a gmail account? - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Annoyed I cant enter the calendar app, nor the market app without it prompting me to open a gmail account. I have no interest or need for another email address.
Currenly I sync my email and contacts through an exchange server and push,
I would like to also have my calendar visibile from Outlook.
Can I do this without gmail?

hardly... without a Gmail account, your device is not useful
it is horrible to non existent sync with outlook / exchange server
without gmail you will not be able to get Android Market the legit way

You can always just forward all emails to your normal account anyway

Btw, it is possible to survive without a gmail account, but you'll have to use another app store, and use apps like Jorte (I guess).

You cannot survive well without a gmail-account.
Make it for you, but don't use it for syncing, use it just for Market and other Google related services:
1. Setting -> Accounts and sync -> Manage accounts -> put your gmail.com-account -> Sync is off.
2. Calendar -> Settings -> Calendars -> My Calendar, all others out
3. Contacts -> Display options -> Choose contacts to display -> check Google off.
I use local Outlook syncing with Kies. OK, this is not smart, Kies and Android doesn't understand each other very well. There is nice mess with Outlook, with the PC saved file and with the phone.

I use android manager to sync with outlook. It is avaialble in 2 versions. USB mode and Wifi mode.
I like the Wifi one.
Check it out, much much better than crappy Kies.

[Q] How to sync with outlook?

I got XP SP3, and Outlook 2007 SP 2.
Used Kies to sync phone with Outlook.
Result? It erased all outlook contacts/calender items, and non got synced to phone. Tried a bunch of times, each time it did the same.
How do I sync?
Not sure about using Kies, I havn't tried it, however google has built in outlook calendar into gmail now, not sure if this will do contacts though it might just be calendar?

problem is google sync is blocked by firewall.
Guess I would have to export things from outlook, import at another PC, then use google sync. What a hassle, I would really like updated calendar events.
Here's an idea: do you run Outlook as standalone, or is Exchange running as the email server with Outlook as the client-side application?
If Exchange is running, have you looked at this, on the handset:
Settings -> Accounts and Sync -> then press Add Account ->More Accounts -> Corporate
You then get a screen which lets you set up an account which syncs to Exchange.
I haven't tried this, since I use Outlook running against a different email server. Maybe it will be the solution for you.
here is another great alternative

Don't you have to export the Outlook contacts to a file, and then import it into the phone? From what I see in Kies, that's the only way to get things started.

In Outlook you run File -> Export, and save the data to a .csv file. Kies is looking for a file like this.
The "sync with outlook" button is for syncing in the other direction: from the Galaxy S to Outlook.

no wonder it deleted all my contacts, and talk about illogical.
Sync is a 2 way street, not one way!
Clicking the open file button in Kies, causes Kies to halt, doesn't seem like it likes mapped network drives.
*sigh*
Ragnar, I don't think that Kies is the best software to accomplish the contacts syncing. I imagine you are dealing with a company email server, perhaps running Exchange?
I gave up on Kies for this task. I am now using Synthesis, a SyncML client, to do an over-the-air sync. There is a 30-day free licence and then one has to buy it. You can also try Funambol, which is free. Of course, using a SyncML client demands that the email server must be running a SyncML server.
Probably you can try "Android Manager-WIFI"? It's free but it only supports wireless data connection with PC, no USB version. It can help to synchronize Outlook contacts/Calendar. Google "Android Manager-WIFI" and you shall find the free download from a manufacturer called Mobile Action. Hope this will help.
Yes, Android Manager WiFi is good, however, Android 2.2 is not complete supported this function now.
It might be under development.
Anyway, it is really good!

[Q] Exchange calendar sync

Hi,
I'm using modaco FR15 default rom
I can add a exchange account, In my calendar I have my gmail account events, but not my exchange account events.
When I go to sync menu, I click on sync calendar, seems to work but no events show up on phone.
Which app should I replace for have it to work?
Thanks
no1 using exchange calendar ?
My exchange syncing works perfectly (apart from phone turning itself off! ). Sorry - were you sure to tick them, in the Exchange Account Sync settings (go into LG Email, into settings, choose the account, and then in "Sync item" make sure calendar is checked.
Edit: Sorry, I read too quickly that you're on FR15 - so you may not have LG Email app.
I have the same problems. I´ve decided to use TouchDown Exchange app. And it works fine. But one problem, it is not free :-(
But you can download trial version for 30 days.
One dummy question: where can i find type of my ROM?
Found the solution :
If you disabled the automatic synchronization (and then you want to synchronize only when you click on it (= doing it manually)) it won't work.
You have to let automatic synchronization and it works. I got my exchange + gmail calendars in the same time.
Good to know - thanks for letting us know. I guess you can always set the automatic sync period to 12 hours, if you want to protect your battery.
Well if I want to sync my Exchange Calender (Exchange Server 2003 Ent.) then the LG Mail Client (which syncs the Exchange mail) crashes on opening a mail).. Calender items do not get synchronized too. The little round sync arrows turn round but stop and then no sync??
Someone got a solution for that (except for buying an app??).
Hi guys
I‘m new here. I just want to ask how to exchange facebook. I mean to have all birthdays from my facebook contacts in my phone calender.
I know that is possible. But how.
Facebook is sinchronized.

[Q] Disable syncing contacts from google acct

Hi,
Previously I was using a Dell Streak and I was able to disable contact syncing with my Google accounts.
Actually I have 2 google accounts and I wanna sync only contacts with one of them.
On Galaxy Note , I couldn't find the setting to disable contact syncing with one account.

Hi,
I really need a solution for this because I've duplicate contacts now.

Go to contacts--Options--More--Accounts
Select the account you dont want your contacts to be merged from. Uncheck "Sync Contacts"
Hope that helped.

thanks. that option disables further sync of contacts from that account but it didn't delete the contacts coming from that account.
How can I delete existing contacts of that account ?
Also, I need the similar for calendar. Is there similar option ?

All'ite. Why don't you do this?
At this step you have disabled syncing your contacts to an account;lets call that account GAcc2. Lets call the account that you would like the contacts to be synced/Displayed from as GAcc1
Now you want to delete the contacts that have been synced from GAcc2.
So Go to Contacts--More--Display Options--Accounts and select contacts to be displayed only from GAcc2(i.e. uncheck the contact boxes for GAcc1). After this step the contacts that are displayed are only from GAcc2(the one you don't want). Simply select all the contacts and delete them. So this means we deleted "ONLY" GAcc2 contacts.
After this step again go to "Display Options" and under accounts select GAcc1.
and voila you will have only GAcc1 contacts left.
Do the same with calendar.
Hope that helped.
Cheers.
thank you. that's a good idea.
But when I delete from my Note, is there a risk of deleting them from Google acct GAcc2 ?
Also, some contacts are coming from both Google accounts. When I delete them, will I lose them from both accounts ?
And, how can I do that for calendar ? I can't find the correct app...
thx
Keep Auto Sync off, that will niether sync mail/contact/calender, when you need to sync it manually, just press on desire item n it will sync for that time only.
Further Now you can get Gmail with setup of Email application separately.

No that would be not an issue. Remember at that step you would have switched syncing to GAcc2 as "off". Just make sure you don't click "Merge with google".
If you are really scared and want to be backup proof i would suggest this;
I'm sure you would be having windows installed with Microsoft office. Microsoft office would have an app called microsoft exchange. Create a dummy account in exchange with a local Dat. Then go to google and search for tools to copy google contacts to exchange. There are plenty. Once you are done with that you would have a backup of your contacts. Similarly there are plenty of tools to do the reverse as well i.e. Microsoft Exchange -->Google server; this way you can restore it too.
Regarding the calendar its the same thing bro.
Browse to Settings-->Account and Sync--> select the account that you dont want calendar to be synced from-->Uncheck 'Sync Calendar'
Hope that helped.
Cheers.
Using Exchange Server with Android, without Google Contacts but with Market
THis post intended for people who use Exchange
Using Exchange Server with Android, without Google Contacts but with Market
To prevent your Google Accounts showing up in an Exchange Server minded device, uncheck autosync.
Create your Exchange account first, sync
Uncheck autosync
disable Wifi (your device must have slow connection)
Then add your google account.
Press Sync, but be DAMN fast to go to the account settings and quickly
uncheck the Contact,Calendar.
This way, you can have a fully Exchange server minded device, without
any junk from Google Downloaded, with Market access.

[Q] How to get GMail push ?

Hey all,
I am aware that Google has extended the expiry date for EAS. So this means we should still see the option for Push email, or the "as item arrives" setting while setting up email.
I only use GMail, no calendar.
I dont see the option of "as item arrives" in my GMail accounts when I set them up. My GMail settings are setup like that because I have been using Push on iOS and then Android for last 3 years.
How can I get the "as item arrives" setting to show up in GMail ? It does show in my hotmail account settings.
Device: Lumia 820 on Telstra (Australia)
I would suggest creating the Account as an "Outlook" Account on the phone and entering the server address manually, see: http://email.about.com/od/accessinggmail/f/Gmail_Exchange_ActiveSync_Settings.htm
You can then deactivate syncing of Contact and Calendar. I guess in your current Setup you are using IMAP to connect to GMail and WP does not support IMAP Push/Idle.

Yeah, this is correct. IMAP is the preferred choice isn't it ? Web GMail shows either POP or IMAP.

OK, didn't know that. So what protocol do Hotmail use then for Push/idle ? Because my hotmail account is always up to date.........
Hotmail uses the Exchange ActiveSync Protocol. This is currently still supported for new Connections by GMail as well but will no longer allow new devices to be connected from July onward. If you select "Outlook" as account type for a new Account it will use EAS.
IMAP is what Google is currently pushing Non-Android users to use.
If you set up an account as "Gmail" on Windows Phone, it will give you the option for e-mail only or e-mail, contacts, and calendar. Even if you're not going to use the contacts and calendar sync, you must choose that option to get Exchange ActiveSync (while Google still allows you to set it up). If you choose e-mail only, it will only offer IMAP/POP.

Nexus 6 Best email app?

Hi,
I'm looking for a good email app for my Nexus 6. I basically only use a personal outlook/hotmail account. I want to sync emails manually only, not push nor auto sync after a few minutes. With the gmail app, when I delete an email in my outlook IMAP account, it comes back and i have to delete it again. it annoys me. I've tried removing and re-adding my account as well. So Gmail is a no go unless this problem is fixed. I've tried many apps from the Play store including aquamail, cloudmagic, K9-mail, bluemail, WeMail, Air Mail-email, Solmail, Outlook app and Email Typemail mail. I'm not satisfied with any of these apps because either 1. no manual sync option (only push) 2. interface isn't that nice, 3. takes too much time to load emails. I've tried Nine which is perfect for me, but I'm looking for a free app. Currently, I'm using Boxer but still not totally satisfied as it takes time to refresh my emails. Any suggestions of free third party apps will be appreciated or maybe testes stock email apps of other phones?
Thanks!
You've mentioned that you have to delete the email twice. I'm assuming you're deleting the email in GMail, then having to enter your Outlook account and delete it there, if I'm understanding you correctly. If that is the case, then the problem is with your email setup. IMAP by design leaves messages on the server, since with IMAP only a copy is downloaded to a client, with the original remaining on the server. Since Outlook is your server, you have to access Outlook to permanently delete the message. If that behavior is not what you want, check in the settings for your Outlook account and see if you can send messages using POP3 instead of IMAP.
If you can make the switch to POP, the GMail app should then function as you expect it to, deleting the messages off both server and client.

k9mail is best option.
And I suspect that complaint of "only push" is targeting k9mail (since the rest of your complaints definitely don't apply), so I will say that you CAN set it to be exclusively manual. Its in Account Settings --> Fetching Mail --> Push folders, set it to "none". Also so it NEVER checks unless you tell it to, set Poll folders also to "none".
Edit: This should give you a hint;
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=159420
Seems that MS does NOT implement the "Trash" directory in their IMAP structure. That means that any attempt to delete a message via an IMAP client will perform the deletion locally, then issue a MOVE command to move the message from INBOX to Trash on the server, and since the "Trash" directory doesn't exist, the MOVE fails on the server and the message remains in the INBOX.
Solution: in k9mail account settings --> folders, scroll down to "Trash folder", and select "Deleted Items".

Actually, I meant deleting it twice from the Gmail app. So for instance, I get an email and delete it in Gmail by swiping. After several seconds, I'll get a notification or receiving that same email. And then I have to delete it again in the Gmail app.
Even so, IMAP could very easily cause this, for the reasons stated. But thanks for the clarification.

No. IMAP *can't* cause this unless there is either a protocol failure OR a configuration error.

I've actually setup my account with exchange activesync on the Gmail app. Entered the manual settings for setting up the Exchange account and now the Gmail app seems okay. Although, it's sending emails only from my outlook alias and not the orignal email ID, but that's not an issue at the moment.
