[Q] Help! Whats wrong with JPC's recovery? - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, I just flashed JPC to my Samsung Galaxy S international version using odin with 512 pit file(Not sure if i'm suppose to use 512 or the new 803 pit file). Everything went fine and I simply love the froyo. Have not encountered any problems but instead, lots of new features.
Then i started wanting to use the stock recovery(3e) to apply update.zip to use the spitfire's mod batt, wpa_adhoc and clockworkmod recovery. But non of these can be applied. The stock recovery always shows error 'Failed to verify whole file Signature' , 'Signature verification failed'. But when I got the mod batt and wpa_adhoc update.zip files, they were said to be signed and i choose the correct files for JPC firmware. What is wrong?

Root the phone again with the method listed above..basically change the recovery section that accept unsigned update.zip.
I dont know will it work..but it should.

Thanks for the link, will try when I get home - not much point having a custom froyo rom if you can't flash unsigned update.zip's!

Yes, simple do all steps again

I downloaded the firmware XXJPC in update.zip in the same topic, you can try to install it via recovery. And now do not need to flash a special kernel with Odin to update XXJPC

Ok. Will try when i get home. Thanks for the link.

Flashed jpc via Kies a couple of days ago. The rom is not stable and reverted back to stock DDJG4.
Since I flashed via kies, i never had problems with recovery.

I tried the method and i got the latest superuser. However, i still get errors running update.zip on the recovery (2e). I was trying to update the wpa adhoc file. Anyone had luck updating update.zip files?

I have no problem using recovery 2e. I deodexed my rom and placed them in the update.zip, to replace those odex files. It ran well without the error message.
CWM will not work at this moment, because the file structure between 2.1 and 2.2 is different. CWM looks for /sdcard/ but froyo 2.2 is mounted as /mnt/sdcard, hence it just stops there.
I believe CWM can be tweaked to enable a full backup for froyo.

Of course, because the recovery is 2e for DDJG4. ZSJP2 and XXJPC uses recovery 3e, which there is a form of signature verification implemented.

Installing Darky's / Axura ROM

Hey everyone, I'm trying to play with a couple ROMS, starting with the Darky 7.7 ROM from stock Froyo 2.2 on a Galaxy S i9000.
I've done the following:
1) Rooted the phone using SuperOneClick (proven to be rooted with ROM Manager).
2) Transfered the Darkys ROM.zip to the internal SD Card
3) Downloaded and copied ClockworkMod from the original post (file is update.zip) and transferred this to my internal SD Card
4) Gone into ROM Manager, selected Flash ClockWorkMod Recovery
5) Select Install ROM from SD card
6) Selected Darkys_V7.7_Gingerbread_.....zip
7) Prompted with Backup Existing, or Wipe Data and Cache. I chose Wipe. It tells me I will be brought into recovery to continue.
8) Chose apply sdcard:update.zip
Receive the following error:
Install default apk-files, finished
--Install from sdcard...
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Verifiying update package...
E: Failed to verify whole-file signature
E: Signature verification failed
Installation aborted.
Where have I gone wrong? Any help is appreciated
Go to recovery mode (power off then vol up+home+power). If you're already using clockworkmod, then select install zip from sd card. If you're not using cwm yet, select install update.zip to give you cwm then choose install zip in sdcard.

You need to install a kernel that has 2e recovery, this version doesn't verify file signatures, or go back to 2.1.
I see now when I enter recovery mode at the top it says Android Recovery 3e. I'm assuming that should say Clockworkmod Recovery.
It is the next step I'm stumped with
What is an example of a kernel that runs 2e? Flashing is done through ODIN correct? Can you help me figure out how to flash in ODIN, or where I can find a 2e kernel for my i9000?
Grab the latest speed mod kernel from hardcore in the dev section, flash that via odin and it will be 2e recovery. Then follow darkys instructions and flash his rom. After his rom is on depending on where you are you might have to flash your original stock modem but only do that if your phone doesn't register on your network.

ODIN is a program that flashes individual kernels, CSC's, modems and other bits to your phone. It's one of the methods used to flash ROMs also. If you search the forums (or even Google) you should be able to get everything together. I recommend searching for ODIN, the 512 pit file, and then following the instructions below to re-root your phone.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=8238938&postcount=1
Any problems you can PM me.

[Q] Clockworkmod Recovery error: signature verification failed!

Hi all,
I installed JPY (2.2.1) Rom on my SGS yesterday, rooted my phone with SuperOneClick.
Tested the phone, everything is ok and the root is also ok.
Then installed Clockworkmod, flash cwm recovery 2.5.1.2, click on Backup, the phone automatic rebooted but presented my with a normal recovery screen.
In it I can do something like; a factory reset, clean card data, restart or click on update.zip (I thing that goes to the update.zip that cwm put on my sdcard).
But when I click it gives this error:
Install from package...
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Verifying update package...
E: failed to verify whole-file signature
E: signature verification failed
Tried everything... What can I do in order to cwm works and backups my sgs??
All the help is appreciated...
Thanks,
you loose 2e recover when going to froyo.. needed for clockwork ..
flash a kernel that restores it ie
chainfire/cf or speedmod or backlight notifiction ie bln kernel.

So what are you saying is that CWR doesn't work with 3e recovery? Only with 2e?
Because 3e does not allow unsigned zips hence the error message..

Thanks for the explanation,
Didn't know why it works with one and not the other...
Anyway, its working now, thanks for all the help!
For anyone that has the same problem, here is what I did:
Flashed the phone with I9000XXJPY and with Odin. You can find JPY here: http://www.multiupload.com/UHJNT0K1F2
Put PIT 512 in PIT and in PDA put the file JPY_JPY_JPY.tar (no repartition selected).
Shutdown the phone after it starts.
Start Odin again and in PDA put this file: CF-Root-XX_XEU_JPY-v1.3-BusyBox-1.17.1
You can download it here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=788108
After that you can install CWM. When you click in backup and the phone restarts see if 2e restore appears in top of the screen if so all is ok.
Also, if a normal screen appears just click in update.zip and after that you will see the cwm screen.
In the cwm recovery screen the sgs buttons are like this: back button is the “enter” and the “menu” is the back button.
P.S. If you need to install TPH for Portuguese language just tell me, cause the CSC installed is KOR and you don't have TPH in CSC file to install.
Once again, Thanks to all who help me!

Great explanation but for the record (for anyone looking for a solution), if you're already on a 2.2 firmware, you can simple start at the step of flashing a custom kernel that supports CWM (i.e. there's no need to first flash to JPY).

How about
1. Repartition with a 512 pit from odin.
2. Flash Stock JM8 or JM9 (Usually i am flashing JM8 when things get messed)
3. Use update zip and install clockworkmod from it . (you will not have any signature errors because now you have recovery 2e)
4. Sometimes you will have to apply sd card update twice to get to CWM.
5. Vola, now you have working clockworkmod recovery and you can flash whatever the things you want with it

horrible suggestion you both need to search b4 posting.. been posted multiple at least 20 times now.. you DONT need to go install a new rom and blow everything away on your phone just to get 2e recovery so clockwork works.. search search.. there are kernels out there you can flash to get back 2e recovery

Oh yeah. forgot to mention it. there is a post that have a kernel which gives you recovery 2e on JPY firmware. (Don't know other firmwares has it or not)
Anyway, in my case i like to blow everything and start all over when i got messed up. because i don't use my sgs for very precious works. i'm just playing with it

Okay..seems like this thread is getting nowhere..
Go to the android development section and look for hardcore's speedmod kernel. Download the latest version and flash it via Odin.
Btw, let me give you a tip once you are in hardcore's thread. PLEASE READ THE FIRST 3-4 POSTS AND FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS.
I don't think you are exerting enough effort to research here in the forum so I just gave you one of the simplest and shortest step to have CWM directly.

you have to flash a kernal with CWM in it using odin first.
Then:
1.) put the firefly zip file on the root of your SD
2.) boot into clockwork, and flash by selecting zip on sd card.
What did you use to root your phone? Z4 doesn't work for me.
Root via Upate.zip
Try this if you don't want to use a one click
DL the file attached
Rename it Update.zip
Copy TO ROOT of internal SD
Reboot to recovery
Install
Reboot
Superuser Granted
which kernel do i have to flash? for firefly
I tried "one click root", "Super one click" on my office's XP but never worked. I came home and repeated "Super one click"on my window 7, it just worked and I see the superuser icon there right away.

captivate won't boot after doing...

This is what was running on my phone:
AT&T Samsung Captivate SGH-1897 Rooted
Android V/ 4.0.4
Baseband V/ I9000UGKG3
Kernel V 3.0.8-g2311908/[email protected] #1
Cyanogenmod V/9-20120819-nightly-captivatemid
I placed these three zip files on to the phone:
cm-10-20121118-NIGHTLY-captivatemtd.zip
gapps-jb-20121011-signed.zip
kernel_V10_4_2_15.zip
I use recovery cwm 6.0.1.2 and did a backup
I then use it to install "kernel_V10_4_2_15.zip" it FAILED so I then used recovery to install "cm-10-20121118-NIGHTLY-captivatemtd.zip" it FAILED
So, I use recovery to put the backup on...and it show cyanogen (mod) 9 FLASHING and would NOT boot.
I went back to recovery....did advanced restore and restored BOOT SUCCESSFUL
then I restored SYSTEM SUCCESS
then I did reboot
the cyanogen (mod) 9 FLASHING and will not go any further.
I was trying to update the phone to 4.1.1 and now have NOTHING...
Can anyone help and tell me what I have to do. I can still get into recovery cwm 6.0.1.2

I think that's your easiest/fastest solution.
From there, flash corn kernel to get root and flash the ROM you want as per their instructions.

You're simply not rooted. go in recovery and make sure root is enabled (assuming you flashed corn kernel that is).

Thanks for your response...I finally figured it all out!!!!!!!!!! My CWM was stock which is 3e recovery and requires signature verification....I had NOT use the corn kernel but flash some zip file that roots...don't remember the name. I then realized that it probably did NOT install CWM a newer version so I put the corn kernel on that would put on CWM that would work...Once I had the proper recovery on I was able to put my 4.0.4 back on and CMod9. Then nothing worked properly everything not working like Gmail Media something so I put on gapps the latest that didn't help. I put my TB on that didn't work well 5 failed....google mail would still not work and the something media kept giving a bad message...
I went into recovery and put on a recovery back up I had done 2 days ago and ALL is now WORKING great...
I still want to update to 4.1.1 Jelly Bean but the files I have don't work so I need to look around for a different ROM and ideas would help.
Thanks again for your time...

[Root] Rooting Tab 8.9 ICS 4.0.4 (official) - for those with problems

Took me almost two days to figure this out, cannot post in development forum, so here it is:
Problem:
"old rooting files" are not working with newer ICS stock rom, tried with all the here for Tab 8.9 existing guides.
Solution:
Took the root file from the (almost similar) Tab 10.1 for ICS from this post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1807219 which has a link to this file:
http://www.shabbypenguin.com/users/...alaxytab10.1/Samsung_Galaxy_Tab_10.1_root.zip
Installed it with cwm recovery 5.5.0.8 (install zip file from sdcard)
and it finally worked on the 8.9 running 4.0.4 ics stock (UK/European Version)!
Combined with the a1 1.7.3 overclocking kernel, the tab now works like a charm
overclocked with app "voltage control" to 1400 Mhz.
edit: this is for model p7300/p7310 (tegra 2 versions) only
Thanks for your efforts.

Anyone know why I can't get root? The superuser is installed but no root access.
I've used ClockworkMod_Recovery_v5.5.0.4.tar with samsung_galaxy_tab_10.1_root.zip file.
this is on P7310 with ICS 4.0.4

Perhaps you should use another root tool. I used a busybox.zip-file.. Just flash it the same way; via CWM (install zip from sd-card)
The file is in the attachments
And if this doesn't work either, you might wanna update your CWM version first, before you flash the root tool. I have it attached as well. Updating CMW is done the same way as flashing a root tool, so: launch CMW 5 and install the CMW6.0.0.8.zip from sd-card.
Here you go!
do we need to have kies installed to flash odin or not?

No. Just the Samsung drivers which kies will install. Then forget about kies. It's a pos. And you don't flash odin. It resides on your PC. You flash with odin.

Are these for P7300 with 4.0.4?
is there anyone with p7310 tegra 2 successly rooted with method above? Please share information and step thx
You can try with Superoneclick2.3.3 - should work fine.
Or you can install CWM first with Odin: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1312218
And then copy root.original.zip over to
SD-card. Turn off device. Go into recovery mode with power on+volume down (don't choose download mode)
and flash root.original there.
are you sure superoneclick are proven to work? Because a failed root attempt using superoneclick usually make tablet slow and need to hard reset
Have no idea. If in doubt flash cwm with odin and then root.

Is this working ? Is there another way to root SGH i957 running ICS ?
Thank you
Hi guys, I am looking for some help with this. I have tried the superoneclick way and the program hangs and does not complete. I have also tried the other way, using the odin flashable CWM 5.5.0.4, but when I install it and boot into recovery, the option screen scrools so fast that I cannot see what I am selecting in order to load the root file.
Can anyone tell me if this is a known issue with this version of CWM? Does anyone know of another odin flashable version of CWM that I could try?
Thanks in advance!

Hey, its a P7310 running stock UK ICS firmware. I double checked the setup and it turns out I was using a different version of ODIN (3.07), so maybe that is the reason?

Maybe it's odin. I've always used 1.85 but others have had luck with ver 3. Try to reflash cwm with 1.85. And make sure cwm is for the p7310. To root I've always flashed super su-busy box thru recovery.
