I have a Att Captivate. I just rooted it. Can I remove the Att address Book that came with he phone without causing problem? I wanted to replace it with the one by Assurant. Please Help. I don't want to start by causing myself problems.
Do you mean remove the default contact program?
AT&T has a backup program that back's up the address book, but if you don't set it up first, it doesn't do anything.
REPLACE
No I mean, can I replace the default address book. It does not have all that I'm looking for in a address book. I would like to replace it totally with the Asurion Mobile AddressBook for Android. But I don't want to cause phone problems that can not be reversed. If I can what do I delete?
there's plenty of storage on the phone and the address book app isn't that big. Just use the One you want and try to ignore the fact the other one exists.
replace
The first step for installing the new address book is to remove all other address books because of conflict. So do I just ignore this step?

maybe provide a link to the app?
I am still unsure what you are trying to do. Android stores data in different databases - There are front end apps that access this data. There is the Contacts application that lets you link contacts from google, phone, exchange, etc.
The only place i have to even see anything called the AT&T address book is under contacts->settings; if i go to set up AT&T address book it is just to manage contacts online and backup and recover. I have no app for AT&T address book - but then i never set it up to start with.
If you do have an address book outside of the rest of the databases, then it is possible your email and other apps won't have access to your contacts - but again, I am not familiar with the app you mention. I can't find it in the app market, or via google.

I am 99% sure he's referring to Asurion Addressbook for Android 1.6/2.0
I am a noob so I can't post a formatted link but the website is getaddressbook.com/
ok, OP [original poster] In terms of removing the stock contacts app.... Use "Titanium Backup" and remove
------[contacts 2.1-update1]
*********BUT DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK!! I tried it and it made my phone unstable...
However, I did find that I don't have conflicts with Asurion ..... So far....
WHatever you do, don't try "Phonebook 2.0" it's the worst app ever.

I put one of my AOL accounts onto my Tilt using AT&T xpress mail, and I want to remove it now because that account is just a bit too busy (spam) and it's not as important as my main email address. Plus I can always use wap.aol.com to check it anyway.
I go into messages and highlight the account and choose delete and nothing happens.
I went back into xpress mail and theres no option for removal.
How can I get this account off my phone?
Can you remove xpressMail from your installed programs? Or was it part of your ROM?
I was just looking to get rid of the account it created, not the program itself, but if I have to I could delete the program, it's listed in remove programs area.
Yes, you cannot delete the account without removing the program. If you wanted to set up another account, you remove the software, then re-install the software and go thru the account setup again.
BUT A WARNING: make sure you have deleted your XpressMail account online BEFORE you remove the XpressMail software from your phone. Otherwise, its possible you will get a series of SMS "pings" that will not stop and can come at you as often as 10 a minute. Basically, log in to you Xpress Mail account online and tell it to stop sending you email (or any other notification), then delete the account. Then remove the software.
I cant seem to find an online option for deleting the account. There's an Xpress Mail Professional Edition registration/login area on AT&T's site but I dont see anything for the personal edition.
How do I go about canceling the account online before I delete the program?
Its been a while since i did it. I don't remember how I did it. If I happen to find it, I'll post it.
EDIT: I used personal edition also. Basically, log in here: https://xpressmail.cingular.com/subscriber/login.stp
and there should be an option to remove your accounts. This is in essence deletes your account.
If this doesn't work for whatever reason, or you start getting the SMS msgs when you remove the software, refer to my posts (esp. the last one) here:

I think I managed to do it from the phone though. I went into xpress mail settings and I choose the option to remove all account data (removed all emails from the account) and then I choose the "Re-Register" option, which deletes the account completely and then walks you through setup again. I choose that but after the account was deleted I just exited the program instead of recreating the account.
cool, glad u got it worked out. i just know myself and others had issues.

so my question is what if you removed the Xpressmail software before you remove your email, how do you stop/remove your email from Xpressmail afterward? will it automatically remove after a certain time?
I work for Sprint and a customer came in with a unique problem. He is using the stock rom, didn't have any backup whatsoever for his contacts whatsoever. The gmail that was attached to his account was inadvertently removed (gmail store data cleared, google apps etc.) I was wondering if there is any way to figure out what the gmail username was, or if the contacts are saved in cache/cookies anywhere else on the phone or SD card. He lost around 10 years worth of contacts so we are trying to recover those for him. Any ideas would be very helpful. Thanks in advance. He claims that one of the reps from another Sprint store set up his phone for him, but we have no way to confirm whether it was someone else or him who set up the account.
/data/system/accounts.db is where the account info is stored, if you use root explorer you can view the sqlite data (but not edit without another paid app)
So he doesn't know what his username is? I'm guessing that he didn't have Gmail before the phone but did he ever email a friend from the phone? If so maybe that friend knows it.
Well, I haven't seen anyone successfully replace the NC contacts app with the generic Android one, but I found something almost as good ... if you're willing to pay.
If you download Touchdown for Exchange from the market (demo version, have to pay to use it for more than 30 days), you can set up your gmail address as an exchange account (login is the full e-mail address, server is m.google.com). It'll sync contacts w/the Exchange server ... and by default, sync those with your "phone's' contact list.
I've tried it, and confirmed autocomplete for contacts now works in gmail.
Some caveats:
* While Touchdown can handle more than one exchange account, it does so with "profiles." You switch between them -- and when you're in one profile, you'll only have access to the contacts from that one. I've got my phone set up with both my personal gmail and my office's google apps account ... so now I'm using Soocial to sync their contacts (non-ideal), and having touchdown just bring down the office stuff.
* You'll want to tweak your e-mail settings to minimize how much data you're having the device get. No need to pull down your inbox again if gmail already is. I have it set not to get message bodies, to sync the minimum amount of days, etc.
* It's a paid app, so you'll have to pony up the cash. And although I'd previously purchased a license key via the market on my phone, I'm not seeing the option for the license key (protected app unsupported by the current market hack?) showing up in the market for my NC. You can also enter a license key, but I'll be trying copying over my valid key from my phone and seeing what happens ...
Nice:
* It handles the calendar well as well ... so no need to bring in the Calendar.apk or CorpCalendar.apk if you don't want to.
Soocial non-ideal
Hi Wordsmith,
Just a quick question why you find Soocial to be non-ideal? I'm part of the Soocial team and we try to listen as much as we can to our users or potential users. Sounds like you are looking for a one stop place to have your address book synced. In what area do you find Soocial lacking now for it to be non-ideal.
Thanks for trying and using Soocial. ;-)

I juist wasn't really looking to have these address books synced in the first place, but I AM looking to access both from my NC, as I do from my Android phone. Since I didn't have a great solution to that, I'm using your product to include all my contacts in both of my address books.
I've used touchdown for about a year now and it's never let me down. Best exchange program hands down. Thanks for the tip to use it to sync Google contacts!
FYI: you can sync only contacts if you choose and the server is m.google.com w/ssl in case anyone needs it.
Hi all,
I just unplugged my sim from my X1 silver, and plugged it into my HD7. and then, after two hours...
1. how do you actually sync your phone contacts from ms outlook 2007 to it? I tried downloading zune, but nothing. The freakin' thing doesn't even have a manual.
2. I thought I won't encounter a problem since it's HTC and since it's WM7, and since my PC is win7 x64. But oh boy, this is getting in my nerves.
3. WM7 doesn't know how find a hidden (SSID) WIFI. I mean,.. Dang!
compared to any wm phones, just plug the hell into your pc, get wmdc, and then voila. 5 minutes tops.
XD
WP7 is indeed a different bird from WM. Hidden SSID is a known limitation, and hopefully gets addressed with the coming update.
I assume your outlook is not connected to exchange? If so, piece of cake, if not, you'll likely prefer (or not) to use a hotmail connector for outlook. This essentially creates a cloud-based sync.
Oh, and the manual is inside the box in a little pocket.
I managed to upload my msoutlook 2007 contacts to the cloud using OC32bit. almost a piece of cake. But, I'm having a hard time getting it to my phone.
When I try to add an account, it says windows live account is already added. but when I tap people. There nothing in the contacts list. None.
When I try to login to windows live via pc I can see all the contacts from there.
I... just hate it.
Talk about innovation, talk about the future. XD
Use Outlook connector and a hotmail account and everything works perfectly.
Hi,
Thanks! I manage to do it now. After spending a night my phone book has everything on it now(contacts wise). Too lazy to repeat it for calendar, lastly, I missed activesync so much that even your one note syncs to your wm.
I'm having thoughts on returning the phone and getting the android version (desire or X10) because of these:
1. hd7 only installs apps on what windows wants and not what YOU want.
2. it doesn't support pdf file for book reading, document reading.
3. I heard it doesn't open .doc .xls and any lower .doc files. (old docs still exist today unconverted)
4. I can't put files on the phone "ala USB flash disk style" I mean where's the plug drag and go, when you use the phone business wise. how do you intend to use the 16G space? (for movies or music; given the rumored battery life?)
Everything we do on our wm phones aren't easy to do on this wp7 anymore, I haven't reviewed at it before I grabbed my HD7 since I said to myself what do I have to worry about? I have grown from WM5, WM6 and WM6.1, what could go wrong?
I dunno I mean I hope I'm not babbling, I can't google if i don't open pocket ie and type google, I can't install opera, I can't browse flash sites I mean, youtube isn't the only streaming video out there. I can't install my garmin mobile xt, I can't install java app, I can't explore the contents of my phone. I mean this is freakin' alien windows i'm using. I don't even know if I can find my phone on over the local area (win7) network or homegroup.
With all the "I can'ts" I said. I thought I'd better off android!. XD
1. hd7 only installs apps on what windows wants and not what YOU want.
If you mean the app store is limited, yes it is. It's growing though.
2. it doesn't support pdf file for book reading, document reading.
Download the Adobe Reader from Marketplace. Free.
Haven't tried #3.
4. I can't put files on the phone "ala USB flash disk style" I mean where's the plug drag and go, when you use the phone business wise. how do you intend to use the 16G space? (for movies or music; given the rumored battery life?)
Zune. It's just a matter of figuring it out. It's different, to be sure. They also want you to utilize cloud based storage more. The offer free SkyDrive space included with your live account, and most of the MS apps can access that space. Other apps, like the eBook reader Freda, can connect to a DropBox account. Then there is Sharepoint.
I can't google if i don't open pocket ie and type google
Open up IE then press the capacitive Search button. Instantly takes you to Google.
I just found there's a google app in the markeplace too? and yes it grows every hour, its almost endless... pretty neat!
If you say it's just a matter of figuring it out, I hope I can figure it out with an option NOT to upload it on a cloud, since c'mon not all places in the world have super fast internet connection, I don't want uploading an entire folder up there then downloading it to my device.
And even if the chevron thing would work on my device, It would void my warranty so I wouldn't try.
After 2 days with my new phone, I feel much more comfortable with it now. I hope it would get even better.
Gotta follow this up since I don't want to start another similar thread.
I have another question:
The phone contacts (people) always have you on top named "Me"
question is, How do you actually link a contact to "Me"?
I just noticed it now that somebody asks for my bank account and of course, I'll look for it in my notes within my ms outlook contact under my name. I just found out that my name in my hd7 doesn't have a picture and doesn't have a facebook link(not that the FB link is too important), etc. and when I click the link icon in the bottom middle, I can link it to any other contact entry in my phone except "Me".
Technically speaking, the contact named after me in my phone is treated as another person. I tried signing on to windows live, check my contact there, found my name and the options I have is "add as a friend" which is really beginning to sound funny.
Long story short, I need to link my ms outlook 2007 contact(myname) to the owner of the HD7 phone which is me, so I wouldn't retype everything and delete the synced "myname" account since if i do so that would be deleted in my PC. I gotta have 'em both. but I wish I just could link it to my phone's "Me" account.
That's a toughie.
So the "Me" contact syncs up with both your Windows Live account and your Facebook account (which you add in services --> email and accounts, NOT the blue facebook app)
I don't see a way to sync the Me contact with another outlook contact.
You may want to take the notes in your Outlook contact and copy them to your Live stuff.

that's dependant on carrier... I get yahoo, you could get the google search app from the market or pin google from IE to the start so you can launch straight to google.

Yeah, not the blue facebook app. and I think I'll just have to deal with it having two seperate accounts the Me, and my outlook unlinked.
@frontieruk
Speaking about the search button, it is getting annoying when you actually hit the button accidentally. I hope someday a double-press (double-click) fix would make it possible.
I had a similar experience except that I got the "Me" where it's suppose to be the first time. Learning little by little, I guess Hotmail (windows live) is actually kinda cool.

If you look up accounts in your setting I believe you can add another email to your phone.
Not sure if you can change it totally without loosing info.
If you're just worried about the email address, I think you can change the address associated with a given Microsoft account. You can also just stop synching email on the current account and add the other account as a normal email account (as opposed to the phone's primary Microsoft account), if you *really* only care about email.
Otherwise, though, I'm not sure if you have any good options. On WP7, your purchases and such were attached to your Zune Tag / Xbox Live Gamertag (same thing) and you could move those between accounts, then hard-reset the phone and set it up with the "new" account to have access to all your old games. It *probably* works the same for WP8, but I can't promise that.
This kind of DRM bull**** is one of the reasons I don't "buy" apps if I can help it. If you actually owned a copy of the app, you could just re-install it on your own device after changing the primary ID no problem... Same goes for Steam and such, of course.

So,this is the story.
When i bought Lumia 520,i wanted to sign in with my e-mail address hotmail.com. I received error, tried with a new alias(same error), so i had to make new e-mail address(outlook.com)..Few days ago, i reseted my phone to factory settings, then i tried for curiosity if my first e-mail work and worked .Now i want to move apps/games to old e-mail address hotmail.com (or merge e-mail addresses).but i can't..I know that in wp7 you could change in registry something( i read somewhere )...
I can change gamertag for free(first time),but e-mail address no.I've been talked with support but they didn't helped me. They gived me a free t-shirt for xbox avatar.....I think there is no other option..just buy again apps/games in old e-mail address.

I believe that if you go to live.com and log in, there is an option under accounts to link different addresses to your account, as well as set the primary. As I remember, would be able to use any/all of those to log in. I had this issue before when I set up a new email. Only problem I had after that was my phones address and the primary weren't the same and FB chat through the native messenger app would not work. I reset the primary and no issues after that. Try it and let us know.

I said that you can add other addresses that will link to whatever you use for your Live.com account.
