Conversation with a Nigerian scammer - Off-topic

So I have my Macbook on my local Craigslist, a buy/sell/trade site here in the States. This site has been plagued with an influx of fake people with fake money sending around fake PayPal emails.
Unfortunately, I'm all to familiar with these scams, which all seem to originate from Nigeria. Here's my most recent exchange:
I am interested in this item,is it still available for sale?get back
as soon as possible.
Richie Mo ,

Of course, it's a fake number...
Since your number is from Wisconsin, you can look at my eBay listing. I will not ship the product outside of eBay.

I bolded the suspicious lines, as these are the "red flags" that I look for (for good reason). Notice the HORRIBLE grammar and spelling. PayPal is a professional company, and they take great care to promote that image. As far as I know, all their emails are computer-generated.
So here's my response to "Richie Mo":
Nice try! It's a shame that you're a scammer, because it's a really nice computer. Those paypal emails are fake, I know for a fact. I am not new to craigslist at all, and I've turned down better fakes than you on the daily. Thank you for giving me a good laugh though!

I've been around the block a few times. I've had similar attempts on several different items in the past. One was a man offering more than asked plus $100 for shipping, but to his "daughter in west africa as a missionary". The sale was for a Behringer mixer for DJ-ing.
I hope that I have enlightened you all to the warnings and red flags to look for so this doesn't happen to you.

eBay, at least in my head, is a safer way to deal with it because there's a third party involved. This all might be an illusion, but he sure seemed to hate the idea.

Same here, its good to show people it still happens.. Just a shame alot of people do fall for it..

I ALWAYS get those emails every time I post an Ad on Craigslist. I know its a scammer because they always refer to what your selling as an "item" not with "Hey do you still have the evo? Will you take $50 for it?" like the typical low ballers.

Such a shame. What I wouldn't give to meet a scammer like that and make them cry. My brother-in-law was a spammer, but that's more respectful.

hmm..
<sarcasm>I would have done the following (knowing it was a scam...)
I think it may be legal to send bodily fluids and feaces as long as it is packaged in such a way that odours are not emmited, and it doesn't leak.
Get a macbook box, just for fun, use it as my toilet for a day, package it all up properly of course. And send it to that address. Be interesting to see what happens when they did get the USPS tracking number </sarcasm>
I don't like scammers....

I'm fairly certain that isn't legal. I was planning on sending an empty box with too little postage and no return address, forcing "Richie" to foot the bill.

(I know it isn't but I guess sarcasm does not carry over the internet to well!)
Its a shame google maps doesn't have much coverage on Nigeria, could pop a nice little map marker on for all to see that scammer lives here.... That would be an interesting layer.

They (and others like them) post the same junk here on a constant basis. Some have fallen for it and, surprise, they've lost their money.
No offense, but just use some common sense. Do you really think any company can sell merchandise for way below cost? Where's the profit?

Wait wait there my good friend .... A virus isn't hard to e-mail a person all we need to do is hide it well .... Like once we get his e-mail have a sexy girl e-mail him saying she likes him and sends him viral attached pictures... Or just some other method but we have to catch this jerk off guard. Or not even a virus but a trojan or bot to gain access to his machine .. Thus we can then have even more fun than 1 messed up computer
Another Line of thinking
How bout we beat him at his own game.
How bout we offer the same thing as he does at only .10 over Ebay costs to list it???
Should put the ************out of business.
What do you think Simon?
we can also e-mail the bidders on ebay and tell them that they can get the roms here for free. I will do my part and do this whenever I come across one of those auctions.

Thats wonderful except you cant do that on ebay with out worrying what issues they feel they may have with it. The person with that 10cent deal will more than likely get banned as ebay sucks and they look at that as some type of break of their policy. That much I do know as I made a 10 cent auction for a phone call and got banned .... So don't do anything to get anyone banned as my account is still down even tho i complain to them everyday after they allowed someone to fraud me.

No bidders as its a buy now sale not an auction. But if someone was to monitor it and catch the person who clicks it before they pay then yes an e-mail will be effective.
Okay -- Last Ditched Attempt at a Solution
What if .....................
We create a website.... win his auction...... link the website in his feedback
Website exposes what he is.
Where he got it from.
How they got ripped off...................
How about just making a fake ebay account and bidding on all his auctions then don't pay? Get banned, repeat process. He'd have to give up eventually.

[Q] Gumtree Scammers [UK]

So I tend to list my old phones on Gumtree, due to eBay's crazy fees. With eBay and Paypal, you sell a phone for £400 and give them £40 of it! Kinda crazy really.
Anyway, everytime I list an item on Gumtree (even through I state I wont ship internationally) I get e-mails people telling me they will pay me X+£100 via Paypal.
Of course I always either ignore or reply telling them I wont ship outside of the UK at which point they don't reply.
What I'm curious about is, how do they work the scam? Paypal is generally quite safe isn't it? Do they claim after two week's they haven't received the item? Does the money just never get to Paypal and they try and talk you in to sending it before it's there?
I'm half tempted to ask one of them to pay the money, me with no intention of sending the phone anywhere, just to see what happens...
http://reviews.ebay.com/PAYPAL-BUYER-SCAM-EXTREMELY-IMPORTANT-INFORMATION_W0QQugidZ10000000000114286
Basically unless you have proof that you have sent, and that they have signed for an item, PayPal will refund the money.
a specific example
So from the example, even if you have proof that the package was delivered, Paypal are likely to give the money back?
I wonder what happens if I ask the scammers to transfer direct into my bank account?
That's made me a little nervous now. I've just sold my DHD on eBay, the guy has paid with Paypal right away.
What are the safest steps for me next? I simply post it via recorded delivery and submit the tracking number to eBay somewhere?

and on paypal too
Thinking about it, I should probably do it special delivery, because that is insured. So if he claims its damaged or something, I can go back to Royal Mail?
Now... the other thing, the guy is only 7 miles away, I'd prefer to drop it over to him. If I get him to sign a 'receipt' do you think Paypal would accept it? I guess I'm actually safer posting it now, he's paid for postage, so he could claim I made it up, where's my postage info...

So long as you keep the receipt for postage, and make a note of the time and date, where you posted it etc, the Post Office will refund up to £30 (I think that's the amount anyway) for missing items, after they have investigated. Anything more expensive, and I would suggest you send it with insurance anyway.
Are you guys serious??????
just search "gumtree scams paypal moneysavingexpert" on google (sorry can't post links)
That's why I stopped using gumtree overall. It is nothing but a scam den! Now I use other safer sites like movethat.com or bonsoni.com
Not if you're careful. I've not been scammed once using Gumtree and I've made more money from each sale as I'm not giving eBay and Paypal 12% of my sale. You could say that in itself is the biggest scam...
I do still use eBay, cause we don't really have any other auction alternatives do we?
Yes if you are smart then you should be ok (although my smart cousin lost his deposit money for a flat) . But the problem is Internet is available to everyone, even to the granny who never used a comp before.
usually these kind of naive people are becoming a victim. Just search gumtree fraud or gumtree scam on google news search thousands on result come up! Apparently police stopped taking this crime reports as they are too many of them.
You are not giving that 12% to ebay and paypal but do remember that actually you are doing them a favour by using gumtree, which is own by ebay and paypal.
That's what happened when capitalism reach at its pick and consumers don't have much choice.
Once again I prefer to use other smaller and safer sites then any of the above named site.

I don't think it's a viable alternative though. For example, there's 1 Nexus S for sale on eBid. If I'm looking for a phone, why would I go to eBid. If I'm selling, why would I start an auction on eBid, next to no-one see's it and my item sells at a crazy low price

One reason to use smaller websites like ebid is because less people will bid, so you may pick up a bargain.

That's exactly what I'm saying, thanks. Very bad for sellers, not a viable option.

Got screwed by "bigpetesales" on ebay

So I had about $200 to spend on a cell and wanted something with a key bored.
Long story short, I won a my touch 3g slide on ebay for $144.50 from "bigpetesales" and I paid on the 16 of April. Well its not May 11 and still nothing.
I tried to contact him threw ebay 2 weeks ago to see if he had a tracking number for me and didnt hear anything back which I thought was weired since every other time I asked him a question he would respond asap. Any ways I filed a clam with paypal but fell Im not gonna get money back and in the end, get the shaft.

Not sure. Hope so, so maybe I can get this sorted out.
As for the dispute on paypal. I allready did but, because the sale price was not over $150 paypal dose not require signature verification to prove it was delivered.
I paid $144.50 without shipping so Im up ****s creek without a paddle.

I should think it is up to the seller to prove it wasn't delivered. Your dispute should work.
On a side note, T-Mobile is offering these for free with 2 year activation, through 12 May:

Don't worry. If he doesn't prove the tracking is moving, paypal will be in your favor.
He sold stuff before but wasn't active in ebay for couple months now. Maybe his account got hacked.
Either way, you're protected by eBay buyer protection and paypal too.

Is it just me or does this thread have nothing to do with the XDA Marketplace?
eBay can solve all of your problems, they always have for me. They side with the buyer 99% of the time unless it's obvious otherwise.

It is a cell phone transaction and since many of us use eBay and market for sales/trade, its nice to have a heads up on him. I appreciate the info.

I am in Canada and need an AWS cell to use on the Wind network, but thanks for the tip any ways.
Also I know that this has nothing to do with a transaction on xda but as stated I just wanted to give a heads up in case some one from here was shopping on ebay and came across that seller.
As for paypal, I could win but get nothing if he withdrew his funds out of his account, this is what I was told by paypal yesterday when I called them.
if you win, paypal will get all money for you.....
if user don't have money in him account, we will have a negative money on him account...and paypal will persue him to revenge xD loool
Sooo I got an update from ebay/paypal, the seller updated the tracking info.... "usps #1111111111111111111"
Yup I think I got screwed.

Wow, that's pretty a messed up/ballsy thing to do. Needless to say if you file a claim that you'll get your money back with ease simply based on that.

Nope, all 1's. It is what it is. I just hope I get my money back.
If a paypal rep looks at it, they would probably look at the tracking # and say something. Wish you the best of luck on that one.
Surprised. A hundred and something positives, no neg feedback on that user. That sucks to get shafted like that.
Good luck on getting it back from Paypal, though it should be a pretty easy claim.
Thanks guys. I dont know whats gonna happen as I was told by a person from paypal that I can win the claim but there could be no funds in the sellers account, so I would get nothing back.
I just had a paypal dispute close a little while ago for $250. seller took out all the money in his account, won the case, pay pal put his account into the negative and gave me my money back asap. told me it was there problem not mine. so its worth a shot... and this was a pay pal dispute that was from a forum not a eBay purchase which they are more willing to help with because of image. good luck

If the seller don't got a credit card or bank account linked, there's no funds to take from. . Best of luck on getting your money back OP.

Can someone help me on a Paypal dispute ?

Hello,
On august 3rd, I was selling my email adresses on Ebay : [email protected] and [email protected]
I said on the description: READ CAREFULLY, THESE ARE NOT PHONES, BUT EMAIL ADRESSES
Someone bought my item, and paid for it
I woke up this morning and found that the buyer ( 1 and half month later ) ... Opened a dispute on paypal saying he never received the item ? I sent him the password 30mn after the end of the auction.
My point of view is that he didn't read carefully the description and now, thought it was a BlackBerry Torch and now, he wants his money back because of a mistake.
What can I say on the dispute on paypal ?
I have 4 options on Paypal:
Provide Shipping Information
Evidence Other than proof of shipment
Proof that I refunded the money
I will accept liability
Which one should I take since I sent the password vie E-mail ?
Thanks for your help.
Curious.. you sold an email? Hoe much for?

Also curious, I've been wondering what to do with that box full of old email adresses......
Sent From My Fingers To Your Face.....
Someone having business or a fan of Blackberry could use it
What can I do now ?
Show Paypal the original ad. If you were aboveboard and the ad clearly stated there was no physical product, just an email address, then the buyer had no basis for dispute.

If you've sold someone free email addresses that are actually the property of someone else (Google and Microsoft in this case) then I LOL at you for the fact that the buyer will possibly get their money back. You didn't deserve it in the first place.

The buyer said that he didn't received the item.
On the dispute, I made a Screen showing an email where I sent the passwords to the buyer.
That should be fine ?

IF the transaction is legal, showing a copy of the email with the password should suffice. However, you technically do not own either of those email addresses. They are property of Google and Microsoft and are leased to you for free. I'm not sure you have a legal right to profit from them. Just a thought.

Basically your get-rich-quick scheme is about to blow up in your face. I think you'll find that ebay are about to do an Inception on you. i.e, the fact that you have violated the Terms and Conditions of both Hotmail and Gmail will mean that you have also violated ebays own T&Cs when you traded those addresses.
I hope i'm wrong, but would you bet the bank on it?
Edit: Don't get me wrong, i admire the entrepreneur spirit, but this is not that different from cybersquatting, and the powers that be NEVER rule in favour of the little guy in those cases.
It's not a " get rich scheme " ...
I created those adresses because I used to be a BBerry User ...
But since I moved to Android, I can sell them because they were mine and I don't need it anymore.
Well, that's not the point. The buyer said he didn't received the passwords but I have an E-mail where I sent the password. I did a screenshot and send it to paypal.
That's works ?
( We are solving it on Paypal.com, not Ebay
Put it this way. You are on the middle of a tightrope, 1000ft above a screaming hoard of greedy lawyers; Google lawyers on one side, Microsoft lawyers on the other. At the far end of the rope are ebay lawyers and behind you is a disgruntled netizen with a pitchfork.
Good luck dude!
Well, if we forget about lawyers and stuff like that ....
I sait that it was email adresses ..
I wrote READ CAREFULLY in Red, Bold !
Then, it's his fault, no ?
And I have a proof of delivery ?

Yeah, it's as airtight as a sieve, but i'm convinced!
Seriously, i wish you luck. It'd be nice if the little guy wins one for a change...and i f*****g hate lawyers!
Q) What do you call a thousand lawyers on the bottom of the ocean? A) A good start!
Loooool thanks for your help !
Have a nice day
