Lately I've noticed that my Milestone has some problems with displaying colors.
I have attached the screenshot of my home, where you can see terrible transitions between similar hues.
lso, there is wallpaper file attached, which seems to be okay to me.
Is it common with those screens or it's just my Milestone?
my milestone does the same :/ could it be that it does not have 16 million colors?
24 bit images on a 16 bit display will cause the banding you see.

i find it weird that no reviews mentions this or even the specifications sheet, :/ the desire has an 24 bit display?
That's what I thought, pretty much.
Still, it being not mentioned is strange, as it seems to be fairly serious issue. Unless it's possible to convert images with no quality loss visible on the screen.
The proper term is dither, in cyanogen you can enable surface dithering in cyanogen mod settings > performance which should improve image quality at the cost of performance. Not sure about other roms.

im curious to know about the display used in the droid 2 and droid x, the htc desire, are they using a 24 bit display now?
The Droid/Milestone does have a 24-bit display: http://www.displaymate.com/Motorola_Droid_ShootOut.htm
In fact, the Droid 2 uses the same LCD.
That gradient problem with your image is probably caused by several problems:
1. The picture is not a true 24-bit image.
2. Google's Gallery is limited to 16-bit!
The Milestone/Droid has one of the finest LCDs on the market, and if it had not been so expensive when it was first released in Canada ($600!), I would have bought it in a heartbeat, despite the locked bootloader.
EDIT: I've just examined the photo on my 24-bit Aquos, and it looks perfectly smooth, so the problem is being caused by Android 2.1. FroYo's Gallery is also limited to 16-bit.
So what gallery could I use to put wallpapers on?
Flikie does pretty much the same, as it uses Froyo gallery.
Well, it seems that application named Wallpaper Set and Save (find it in market, it's free) is the easy way out.
This app lets you set the 24-bit wallpaper keeping the desired quality, more or less.
Though, it may make Launcher Pro FC a couple of times right after setting the new wallpaper, then it works flawlessly.

if the 16 bit problem is androids fault how could google not fix this in 2.2? so thats why a lot of of phones use a different gallery than the stock, im surprised this isnt mentioned more often

Yeah, I agree. Apparently, Samsung's Galaxy S Gallery is a bit better. Not truly 24-bit, but the Galaxy S adds improved dithering. The Galaxy S, with all of the hype about SAMOLED, is not even a real 24-bit display You Milestone/Droid/Droid 2 folks have the best Android screen, IMO.

Hello Guys,
I am new to android and it's very interesting for me to go through the discussions of rooting and other stuff. Brilliant!!
I just bought wildfire recently and hmm.. resolution is disappointment for me. I despirately need two things:
1. Hack for HVGA resolution.
2. Live wall paper.
It seems live wall paper is possible from my understandin after reading threads though. Is it possible and please advice me on this regard.
Thank you in advance.
Dude, no hack can push things over hardware limits... I m no android developer, but if you need higher resolution look for another android deveice..

check lcd density thread in themes and apps
I already checked lcd density app, but seems doesnt work perfectly.
I duno about you... but i think it will be really really hard for software to alter the hardware of a phone. hvga on the wildfire would be awesome... but not any sooner

not the app, i mean check the thread! you cant use the app u must change manually in system/build.prop
!!
i am using LCD Density for root. it works fine for me, on wildpuzzle v8
resolution reverts back to standard after reboot but it takes a few seconds to change again. and i don't reboot that often.
LCD Density changer never worked for me. But LCD Density for root (different program similar name) works fine and allows me to set my density to 100 (where 120 is default density) this certainly changes the resolution, whether it changes it to HVGA i dont know, but it is deffo higher resolution. with launcher pro set to 5 rows and 5 columns i have a lovely looking phone now. just waiting for our super fantastic devs to look into an overclock kernel and i will be set
I think you need to set density to 76 (not sure) to reach HVGA resolution and your screen looks fine though. Thanks for your information.

ahh, i am well off then lol. with LCDDensity for root the lowest you can go is 100.
but like one poster above me said, i spose if you want a HVGA screen you pay the premium price for it. i am happy with my wildfire, i have to be, my wife won't let me buy a new phone for another year! i go through to many apparently. we will see though, if i buy a desire she may not know the difference
Not Possible IMO , Though I have also Worked with LCD Density Changer (Beansoft) Wildfire Looks Good With Density 100 / 110 , Any lower than than and the menu text and the Notification Icons looks Crappy.
We would need Hardware Upgrades (Better LCD) In Order to Increase it :-/ I So wish we had Better screen , Resolution is the worst Issue on Wildfire.
I just tried lcd density changer, 110 setting did nothing and 100 setting screws up the lockscreen slider and makes it laggy.
^^ Do it by small Changes , The Stock Lockscreen looks good at 100/110 , The HTC One Screws up.
I hate the Icons at Notification Bar , at 100 , too Small
true, it was the htc one that screwed, im looking at a mod to disable lock screen altogether though. kept it at 120 and did the 5 columns and 5 rows launcher pro mod.
You guys do realise that it's impossible to get HVGA on a QVGA screen?
LCD Density changer gives effect of Hi-Res Screen, but it makes a lot of apps look worse (Paper Toss is a prime example of this)
All it does is rescale some UI elements, not changes any hardware
LOL , Yeah We know LCD Density is just about "Feel-Good-Factor"

i seeeeeee. i read the full disclaimer now on the lcddensity app and it does say it 'virtually' changes resolution or something similar. it was something new to try anyway, and it looks good i have had the phone for 3 weeks now and i dont think there has been a single night where i havent had it in my hands flashing roms and trying apps.
Oh well. So no other way to make resolution high?
Resolution Can't Increased Without a hardware Upgrade , So No Can Do.
110 seems to look best on the wildfire ... at least for me
Hello!
I today recieved my fresh sgs and was playing around with it..i am really enjoying the contrast of its amazing screen..but then i put it right next to my slcd desire and what i realised hit me like a shovel..
The resolution on SGS is MUCH..and i mean much much lower than on the desire..both have 480x800 pixel res , and yea i know sgs has 0.3 inches larger screen, but the difference shouldnt be anywhere near that...
Is my phone faulty somehow?
The resolution is the same on those to phones, but the screen on SGS is larger so naturally the pixels will be larger. Also you are comparing SLCD to SAMOLED and they are very different technically, and as you mention this screen has crazy contrast and that will also make it easier to see individual pixels.

Read this post http://goo.gl/VlJxv . I kinda should have read more about the SGS before buying it. Now I am kinda disappointed with this and other things
Oh then i was right....because i kow for a fact that n1/desires with amoled do not have 480x800 effective resolution....
well this blows....
yeah ... and you dont see this at the shop while playing with the phone. No chance you notice this. I mean I WOULD never even think that this will look like crap . I mean SUPER AMOLED and how good it is you hear from everywhere ... And then the screen with its burn ins and ****ty resolution is one of the worst...
Btw I installed a cute small bold font comfortaabold from a thread here (Search for flipfonts) and it helps with the readability a little but for pics dunno, there I dont have with the res a problem.
I think im gonna give it a few more days more for a fair trial and if im still unhappy i will have to let it go :/

Hello,
As i am today a not very-pleased s3 owner, i decided that i will give Sony a try for the first time. After looking much at especially the V and the Z, i`ve decided that the Z will be the phone i will enough pleased with.
Anyway, i habe been reeding alot about this phone the last days, and i keep reading that the screen is not "good" enough, and that is something that concerns me.
So i am asking YOU GUYS that are a lucky owner of the Xperia Z; How does the screen feel like? Is it relly THAT bad as people is talking about? I really want this phone. I love sonys interface and water+dust proof is a must for me these days.
I hope someone can give me a good answer.
Appreciated !

I would love to check it out, but here in Norway we dont get it before 6-10Mars. I went to the store today to check out the display on the Xperia V, and i gotta say i liked it alot more than my Amoled S3.
AW: So is the screen THAT bad?
Screen is just fine. Lots of exageration.
The vieweing angles are sub-premium, this is true, but perfectly ok. First its only the colours which wash out a bit, its not like you wouldnt see anything anymore plus, to be honest, how often and for jow long do you look at your phone flat and sideways...?
I like the screen a lot. Nice colours to look at, insane resolution and pixel density , everything is so damn crisp and clear. I mean hello, its a flaghship after all, they dont dare to put utter bull**** in it. As I said, lots of exaggeration.
TFT with high resolution. Colors are bad.
Regards
Yesterday I tested 3 Xperia Z with bright pixel. But finally got one that has none.

Depends on your definition of good colors.
When looking at photos vs one x without BE turned on colors are pretty close to the real thing including vibrancy and saturation. Now if you are the kind of person that likes unhealthy yellow skin tones, better than real life colors than yeah colors are no good. When people say it looks washed out they actually mean it is not punchy the truth is that when you look at the real world vs s3 and one x the real world seems to be washed out
Stop this BS already... screen is very good.
The only "problem" with it is colour saturation in UI. When BE2 kicks in, and you're on 60%+ brightness, colours and brightness are amazing. And since BE2 doesn't change the screen's physical properties - it means that the screen itself is perfectly fine. The only thing you can be unhappy with is UI's default saturation values, which are quite low, probably to make the difference between media and UI very noticable.
Also, it's true - "washed out" colours are actually a lot closer to natural colours. If you want very saturated colours all the time - you might not be satisfied. If you want completely oversaturated colours - go for AMOLED, they're amazing in producing rich, highly saturated colours.
For me, coming straight from an S3 to this, it really does look washed out, no mater how you look at it.
However, I think that this is because the S3 had very over saturated colours. If you do decide to go for the XZ, you'll be disappointed at first, but it feels much more premium and you'll start to realise that the S3 seemed like it was in Shop Display Mode all the time!
Ultimately, the choice is yours, but don't be downhearted if you go for it and you're initially unhappy with the screen.
EDIT:
Which is basically what everyone else has already said here.
Maybe Sony should have added a samsung mode where it sets the saturation up to 120%, the contrast to .800 and maximum brightness to 50% so you can't see anything when outdoors.
I think you'll be happy with the screen if you upgraded from other xperia family phones. But if you will compare it side by side with other 1080 LCD phones like htc butterfly, hell even with HTC One X which has 720P and a year older, Z can't match overall display quality. Trust your eyes. To see is to believe.

All Sony screens are very good from my past experience, people are just used to over saturated colors that other companies do to their phones. Also, you eyes will strain much less when you look at Sony screens for extended period of times.
Also, I don't understand what's with the ruckus of angle viewing, seriously, how many of you out there actively view the screen from a angle? its just retarded to compare that, it's not even a point.
Sent from my LT26i using Tapatalk 2
I personally really like the screen. I hated the screen on the s3 and thought the colours looked unnatural and oversaturated. With the XZ, while it may be 'washed out' to some, I actually find the colours, contrast, etc. quite nice to look at and natural. The s3 and the like hurt my eyes. Plus viewing angles aren't half as bad as I expected them to be given all the hysteria regarding them prior to release.
I posted this in the other thread "clearing up the....."
"I have now spent 48 hours with my XZ in the UK. I really like the display. It is sharp, vibrant and realistic in terms of colour and saturation. I could not get on with the amoled display of the HTC desire and the samsung galaxy. Too unrealistic imho. The bravia engine takes it to another level for movies and pictures: It will impress your friends!
I was hesitating with the iminent release of the HTC one. I have absolutley no regrets. It is a beautiful phone and a beautiful display."
well if the only downside is "bad view angles" and "low sturation" its great display because
1. i look my fone from front not side
2. i dont like too saturated colours (red must be red not burning red example)
3. resolution n ppi is high enough to make clear and nice pic

hi guys
my friend gave me his Ox+ for a while in order to flashing a custom rom.. so.. i struck when the iron was hot
here is my comparison.. just have to say something.. maybe these pictures don't show the reality.. in this topic i'm
trying to make a fair comparison and tell the truth which i saw on my eyes
one other thing.. sorry for my not so good English :cyclops:
both of these devices use LCD technology (IPS HD+ for nexy and super clear LCD on Ox+)
regarding to GsmArena test Nexus has a much brighter display (608 vs 420) but i must say it's not sensible..
and Ox+ provide more contrast (1521 vs 1320) .. well i must say Nexus had more contrast on my eyes and it was sensible!!!!
here is some pics:
right/up is nexus... left/down is Ox+
1st pic; a nature
both of them are damn good!! very sharp displays.. excellent color reproduction, contrast and etc..
i think Ox+ provide a warmer colors.. and nexus had more contrast on my eyes
both of them are pretty close in this pic
2nd: red flower
again.. both of them are verrry good.. but again i must say nexus has more contrast and ox has warmer display
look at the left corner.. white is damn good on nexus but seems yellowish on OX+
3rd : jelly bean..!!
i must say nexus is the obvious winner in this pic.. better contrast.. excellent white and richer color..
4th : pure white
no explanation..! n4 definitely wins here..it provide best white i've ever seen on any device..!!
5th : pure black comparison:
sorry.. i didn't have a good camera to show the real differences.. but i mus say ox+ had better blacks.. although
maybe it's because of brighter display on n4.. but on full brightness i must say ox+ wins
6th: viewing angle
again sorry fir no pic 'cause of camera..
both phones had verry good horizontal and vertical viewing angles.. ox+ was a little darker..
but if view them from the corners ox+ wins..! no changing color and contrast.. very good.. i must give win to One x
let me know if you like it.. :good:
i can make a camera comparison if you want :fingers-crossed:
i must say that i used FauxClock for screen calibration.. it's not fraud..
custom rom/kernel/mod is part of a nexus device

Screen of Nexus 4 was calibrated according to your taste. So does it effect the outcome of Picture quality?
If yes then is this a fair comparison
My friend has a regular One X, and its display is far more rich, bright and responsive (probably the best touchscreen I tried) than the one in the Nexus 4. You can clearly see the differences under direct sunlight.

I'm a previous htc one x owner. Let me tell you, the touchscreen was no better than what i experience in the N4. If anything it was less sensitive. I remember actually holding my thumb down to that ****ing piece of **** you call a screen on the one x hoping for it to react. Regardless, if anything, the N4 is MUCH, MUCH, MUCH better on the screen side since 4.3.
I actually hated the ONE x so much that i decided to drop it a second time to shatter the display once and for all after i had already mistakenly dropped it. Piece of ****.
**** that thing. Worst device ever
Drains battery like i drain my **** down the toilet when i have instant diarrhea pills shoved down my throat.
U used wrong calibration, use iphone 5 calibration with franco kernel
