[Q] What is Wrong with my Nexus One? - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi there. Ive had my Nexus One for about a month now, I barely use it.
Anyway, I went to turn it on today. I had to remove the battery twice and on the third time it finally worked. What was happening was that it would start up and freeze on my lock screen.
Also earlier today, I took some pictures on my phone. then when I went into the gallery it didnt show any pictures or any folders. It was simply blank. I came back about 30 minutes later and everything was fine.
Whats wrong with my phone? Ive barely installed any apps, no 3rd party software. I dont understand.
Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks

SD card contacts might need cleaning. They did when I just received the phone.

What does this mean? Thanks

Remove the MicroSD card from the phone, take some alcohol-soaked piece of cloth, and scrub the contact points on the card. Then put the card back when it dries.

Thanks for that - Any specific type of alcohol? Beer/Wine/Spirits/Whiskey etc

vodka. on the rocks

Pure alcohol, ethanol. You can use alcohol wipes as long as it's pure alcohol.

Just to clarify the use of alcohol. You want something that evaporates without leaving any traces (besides maybe a smell). Beer just makes things sticky, so it's not a very good choice.
Vodka is not the best choice, but if nothing else is around you could use it.
Best choice is isopropyl, you can get a decent bottle pretty cheap at any drugstore. It's pretty much rubbing alcohol, and can be used on all sorts of electronic stuff for cleaning contact parts.

Has anyone replaced their trackball?

My trackball is broken or has dust in it. It doesn't move left unless I push it in while going left, and sometimes clicking it doesn't register.
Has anyone attempted opening the G1 to clean or replace the trackball? I was looking at the Dream pdf and it seems like quite a task.

Blow the dust out with compressed air, should fix it. Or just spint it vigorously for few minutes. I don't see track ball breaking that fast (it's not BB for crying out loud ). That happened to me few months ago and a little air fixed it.
Good luck
it isnt too bad to open up the phone and clean it, but dont unless absolutely necessary. Lots of connections that can be prone to damage, and some tape that needs to be carefully removed and reused or replaced.
I've tried moving it vigorously many times, which didn't work.
So I used my air compressor and blew air into it, and that didn't work.
Then I tried rubbing alcohol with a q-tip, and that hardly worked.
I have opened my phone, wow!
I have a bronze G1 and the keyboard is not viewable, found someone in hong kong selling them for 5 bucks so i bought the black keyboard pad and replace it. It was a pain and mind you, my background is totally different than most peoples. I have worked as a Electronics Tech for most of my life and have taken EVERYTHING apart as long as i can remember. That thing has some of the smallest connectors and tiniest screws i have ever seen.
Yes it can be done, the hardest part your going to have to deal with is the splitting of the internal case, they sent a small plastic tool with the keypad and without that i would have probably destroyed the phone in the process. If you can find a small plastic or wooden tool to do that part its not to bad and you do not have to go as far as i did.
If however you do not have a background in taking stuff apart and putting it back together again. AVOID doing so!!
Your phone will NOT SURVIVE most likely. First time took me several hours even with the G1 PDF which looks great till you have to rely on it. Only issue i had was i didnt get the camera connector plugged back in so everything using the camera force closed, that was my clue. So i had to open it up a second time, everything works now and love it but it was not the easiest thing i have ever worked on truth be told.

Question about my hero (Water dmg?)

So yesterday at work I was on the pooper and somehow managed to drop my phone right between my legs... not sure how.
Anyway, I pulled it out of the water almost instantly... damage is already done. Took the battery out and put the phone under a fan. I get home and I submerged it under rice.
This morning I turn it on - everything works. I'm so excited... Nexus One bootscreen.... bam, my rooted baby. Uh oh.. wtf... yeah, the touchscreen doesn't work. . I keep getting android process is not responding blah blah
My question is, is it worth it to try to maybe reflash to another rom to see if I can get the touchscreen working? Or should I Just buy a new one off ebay?
so sad...so gross...
Theres probably corrosion on the connector for the touchscreen to the "main board" (only board) if not in other places.
Disassembly is not that difficult (have to be slightly "handy") and you might be able to clean crud off the connections/legs of ic's.
Ideally for this job you would want a microscope (magnification of some sort), dental picks, alcohol, qtips, compressed air, and deoxit (and of course the torx driver)
Disassembly instructions:
http://androidforums.com/sprint-htc-hero/22036-sprint-htc-hero-disassembly-diy.html
If not too much water has gotten in you should be able to clean it. There is a chance you have corroded off traces on the board, or shorted some components...then youre kinda screwed (unless you know how to fix such things which im guessing you dont or you wouldnt be writing here).
But then you end up with a phone that you put near your mouth that you have no doubt "did a number on" which for me would be a little too gross to handle.
to answer your question...
flash a rom.. only takes a few minutes. Why not? you can not make it any worse!!!!! gross!!!!
and.. try to take it apart and see if you can clean it up some more...follow the posters above's advise.
nope its done for. i give it a week. your running electric current through it while there is still h2o on the contacts. that will speed up corrosion by 300% or something. you should have left it off for 1- 2 weeks for EVERYTHING to dry up. now its just a matter of time. enjoy it.

You're assuming it has been on.
I haven't even turned it on yet with the exception of 3 tests. I completely disassembled the phone today thanks to a youtube video. I cleaned every black circuit I could find... I pretty much cleaned everything. Yes, I found 3 pretty badly "burned" circuits... cleaned them all off. Turned the phone on as a test, and bam - everything worked, touch screen and all ... without flashing a rom.
Now the phone is sitting in about 4 pieces sitting under a fan.. and will stay there for a few days. The front piece + screen, the circuit board, the rear panel and the battery cover.
Thanks for your input, if it wouldn't have been for you I would immediately be using it. You could try to cheer up a bit, though.

P.S - the phone didn't even have a trace of condensation on it. I'm not sure what else could be wet, but I will surely let it fully dry.

Trust me when I tell you I'm not ballin'. I'm your average 30k joe who wishes he went to school.. I'm young enough to go, but can't afford it. The state gives me little to nothing.. and loaning through freddie/mac isn't worth it because your origination fees are more than your tuition for your first year in school.
I just have to have a phone - I live on my own, I don't have parents within 200 miles of me.. I have my boys, and my fiance - that's about it. Hell, I'm STILL paying for that ring.
Battery
Just for your information the battery has the same water sensor that the phone, happens. It could fool a Sprint rep if you preform wisely.
Nice job!
You really want to make sure you (VERY CAREFULLY) scrape off any rust or corrosion then apply something to stop the corrosion from occurring again (deoxit). Dental pick is best, exacto maybe (both used with a very light touch if youre not used to doing this). Dont slice any traces or wiring !! Dont get too aggressive, just get the big stuff off.
ALSO! Clean out your USB post and headphone jacks if they were submerged...same thing-rust (and poop)
Cheer it up a bit? Arent you happy you fixed your phone yourself? You're welcome!

The person I was tellnig to cheer up was the guy who said it was fried - t minus 1 week or something.

Compressed air and screen dust

Has anyone tried taking a can of compressed air to the back of the Nexus One in order to try to clear dust away from the screen? I just want it off the center of the LCD screen, don't need to get it out as long as it's not that visible.
What about partially disassembling the phone (like taking out everything that doesn't require you to disconnect flex cables) and then blowing it with the air?
I managed to drop my phone a couple times and that seemed to have caused dust to get under the screen, but I don't want to take it apart completely until I've exhausted all other options. Returning it is also not an option in my geographic location.
Fancy meeting you here
How would the air get into the screen from the back? Isn't it supposed to be sealed?
I wonder if you could move the dust under the screen with static electricity. Get one of those plastic rods like they use for demonstrations in chemistry class and charge it up. Then drag it across the screen over the dust. Just be careful not to discharge the rod onto the metal body of the phone...
Even if you did attempt this...
It would probably leave an unremovable sticky film. That's one of the reasons they tell you not to use it to blow off camera sensors, lenses, and CCDs (you're supposed to use a blower bulb). The compressed air isn't just pure clean air, it's got a bunch of bull**** in it. Not to mention it could quickfreeze the OLED parts and ruin the screen permanently. I would NOT try it. In fact, if you clean the back (battery, SD, SIM area) make sure you hold a piece of CLEAN 100% cotton (best if it's from a t-shirt) over the camera sensor or it will blow off the IR filter. Hope this helps.
I have done it twice. I posted pictures up on here on a different thread the first time around, which was probably 3 months ago. Send me a pm if you want the pictures. It wasn't horrible to do, but I don't know that I'd recommend it unless you're already experienced in these type of exercises. I didn't have any adverse side affects to the screen.
Here's the before and after.. I have pictures of the dis-assembly as well.
Oh yeah, I also found that a can of compressed air wasn't strong enough. I used an actual compressor set at 60-80ish psi I think.
@enisoc lol...
The teardowns online haven't said that there was anything sealing the screen and the front cover, but the cellphone shops here that I've asked have said that they would apply a sealant if I paid them to take the phone apart for me.
It looks like I can't get to the dust with anything short of a complete teardown :-(. I took the canned air to the back of the phone and it didn't do anything, but I also didn't disassemble the battery tray (no torx screwdriver).
@dhendrix11 if you took the phone apart, why did you still have to use a compressor? Couldn't you then just take something and wipe the dust off?

I used a combination of compressed air and a microfiber cloth. I found that it was impossible to find an absolutely clean spot on the cloth, so it basically just put dust back on the phone. I mostly used the cloth to wipe off smudges when I accidentally touched the back side of the lens/touchpanel, and relied on the compressed air to remove the dust. Also, I didn't detach the lens from the phone frame, so it's hard to get into the corners (where most of the dust is) with a cloth.
The second time around I had a lot less dust and tried cleaning it without fully removing the LCD. If you take the phone apart, you'll understand why you might want to leave the LCD attached and simply lean it back from the lens. However, in the end, I didn't find that to be effective, so I took the LCD out both times. I've got a small amount of dust back in there again, but may 5-10% of what I had the first time, and I really haven't noticed it at all, even out in the bright sun, which was the environment that I typically found it most offensive.
As long as you have patience, it's certainly a do-able task. The main reason I did it myself is because it was early on before anyone was reporting confirmed success of getting HTC to fix the issue free of charge with an unlocked bootloader. I didn't want to chance getting billed for it so it was a nice little project instead. Now that many people have proven that HTC will honor hardware defects regardless of unlocked bootloader, I'd go the replacement route if there's not some other reason keeping you from it.

Hi dhendrix11 thanks for the pictures... I've saved everything on my pc.

well, I ended up taking my phone apart too, using the iFixit guide and the Youtube video. Actually not as painful as I expected it to be, but for some reason I did not have a rubber microphone channel under the bottom mainboard, and I didn't have a screw at the top left of the top mainboard.
I also didn't take the screen out completely, just pulled it up a bit and used tweezers and a cloth to wipe everything off.
Now I have a like-new screen!

My Nook ate my Sd Card

So as the title states, my nook literally ate my micro Sd card. (It said om nom nom while it happened too)
I was sliding it in as always and it disappeared up and over the slot all the way into the back cover somewhere.
I wasn't forcing it or applying any more pressure than you normally would getting it to "click" into place.
I can hear it rattling around in there, so I'm sure its in there.
I went to the store and they said they'd never heard of any sort of problem like this. The guy even called BN tech support and they had no idea.
Anyways... I searched around and couldn't find any way of taking the back cover off. If anyone could point me in the right direction to doing this I would appreciate it.
Look for the nook color teardown...first there are two torx screws under the SD card cover...I think the back just prys of after. Double check on the teardown page first.

Thanks, found it. Had never heard of zdnet before.
I'll give it a try tomorrow - I want my class10 card back
It was a pretty funny how the Nook salesman responded when I brought it into the store.
He was like WTF i can hear it rattling around inside it!
Same thing happened to me, removed the back cover and retrieved it. The two philips head screws under the flap are covered with little decals. Remove the screws, and gently pry the rear cover off to get your sd back. This is what solved the decision whether to root or not since I probably voided the warrantee. Didn't like the idea of frequently changing the SD.

It's TORX, not Phillips!

Just a quick warning before you strip out those screw heads, those are TORX size T5 screws, not Phillips.
Mine were philips head, most of the chassis screws were torx.

Sorry about that, they are torx screws
Perfect time to find this post. Seems I lost two cards in there. Woke up today thinking "I could have sworn I put the card back in there last night!" Luckily I had a backup card from another phone I had. So I popped that in and ran off to work. Came home and went to flash it and hmmm, no card. Time to grab a torx!
What are you doing that the card slips in the wrong area? I have not come close to doing that. I don't think. If you could reconstruct the "crime" it may be a valuable lesson for us all!
Cheers,
kev
glad i stumbled across this, so when i do the same i don't tear the house apart looking for my sd.
I ran into the same thing last night, sorta. I went to eject my movie-filled SD card to change the content and it wouldn't push-eject. I'd been using it with no problem, except when I went to remove it. Seems like whatever mechanism keeps the card in place must have gone away? Luckily it hadn't gone in all the way and I was able to pry it out with my fingernail.
Did a B&N tech chat this morning and they are sending me a replacement. Tech at first told me that warranty was expired (got my NC for Christmas!?) but when I reminded him that there is supposed to be a 1-year hardware warranty, he processed the replacement.
I think that there is a lesson in this. We are pushing the Nook to it's limits -- a good thing. In the process of doing so we're probably also pushing the secure digital port past its design limits -- which weren't terribly encouraging to start with. I suspect that whoever designed the thing figured that a SD card would get shoved in there maybe once -- or even not at all.
Probably ought to be a sticky somewhere that cautions about carefully and delicately inserting and extracting the thing. I also read of someone else whose card would no longer lock in place -- just kept popping out.

MicroSD Card stuck in Dell Streak 7 :\

I know, I did something really stupid. I put an MicroSD card in the slot where the Sim Card is supposed to go and now it's stuck. I can't see it.. so I have no idea what to do.
Please help, I have no idea how to get it out.
Can you see it at all? I believe the sd card bay has enough clearence so that a microsd could get lodged inside the body of the device itself. There's nothing besides the tray itself to stop something like that. (which is kinda crazy if something exactly like this happens)
Nope I cannot see it at all :\
I'm not concerned about the sD card itself, I'm just worried that it'll mess up the functionality of the tablet.
The only real risk is that the pins on it might short something out, or a very remote chance it might cause one of the connectors to detach.
You could try and keep shaking it until it falls out or carefully dissassemble it and get your card. I'd personally try the former, the open part of the tray is the one nearest the display, so hold it display faceing down and bay facing down and hope for the best.
I have tried shaking it out for the past couple of minutes with no results.
There is no rattling sound however, so is that a good thing?
There are no visible screws of any sort for me to take it apart, so if you know of a a way that I can do so, I'd greatly appreciate it if you would share it with me.
If it's not rattleing then it might be jammed up against something, as far as damaging the internals that's a good thing. As long as you dont let it rattle around inside it, it shouldnt be a huge issue.
I made a guide on dissassembling it, it's around here somewhere. But tl;dr the first step is held together by glue and it's a huge hassle to dissassemble and reassemble unless you dont care about casuing cosmetic damage.

If it's held together by glue, I doubt I will have the patience to reassemble it xD
Are there any other options that you know of that I can try?
But nonetheless, thank you for helping

How exactly did you manage to get it out? I've bent a paper clip out so that it was long enough for me to stick it in there and I tried to press it down and slide it out with no results - I don't even know if I was actually touching the card or not :\
If you could provide some details on how you were able to get it to pop out, that'd be great.
Thanks
