So as the title states, my nook literally ate my micro Sd card. (It said om nom nom while it happened too)
I was sliding it in as always and it disappeared up and over the slot all the way into the back cover somewhere.
I wasn't forcing it or applying any more pressure than you normally would getting it to "click" into place.
I can hear it rattling around in there, so I'm sure its in there.
I went to the store and they said they'd never heard of any sort of problem like this. The guy even called BN tech support and they had no idea.
Anyways... I searched around and couldn't find any way of taking the back cover off. If anyone could point me in the right direction to doing this I would appreciate it.
Look for the nook color teardown...first there are two torx screws under the SD card cover...I think the back just prys of after. Double check on the teardown page first.

Thanks, found it. Had never heard of zdnet before.
I'll give it a try tomorrow - I want my class10 card back
It was a pretty funny how the Nook salesman responded when I brought it into the store.
He was like WTF i can hear it rattling around inside it!
Same thing happened to me, removed the back cover and retrieved it. The two philips head screws under the flap are covered with little decals. Remove the screws, and gently pry the rear cover off to get your sd back. This is what solved the decision whether to root or not since I probably voided the warrantee. Didn't like the idea of frequently changing the SD.

It's TORX, not Phillips!

Just a quick warning before you strip out those screw heads, those are TORX size T5 screws, not Phillips.
Mine were philips head, most of the chassis screws were torx.

Sorry about that, they are torx screws
Perfect time to find this post. Seems I lost two cards in there. Woke up today thinking "I could have sworn I put the card back in there last night!" Luckily I had a backup card from another phone I had. So I popped that in and ran off to work. Came home and went to flash it and hmmm, no card. Time to grab a torx!
What are you doing that the card slips in the wrong area? I have not come close to doing that. I don't think. If you could reconstruct the "crime" it may be a valuable lesson for us all!
Cheers,
kev
glad i stumbled across this, so when i do the same i don't tear the house apart looking for my sd.
I ran into the same thing last night, sorta. I went to eject my movie-filled SD card to change the content and it wouldn't push-eject. I'd been using it with no problem, except when I went to remove it. Seems like whatever mechanism keeps the card in place must have gone away? Luckily it hadn't gone in all the way and I was able to pry it out with my fingernail.
Did a B&N tech chat this morning and they are sending me a replacement. Tech at first told me that warranty was expired (got my NC for Christmas!?) but when I reminded him that there is supposed to be a 1-year hardware warranty, he processed the replacement.
I think that there is a lesson in this. We are pushing the Nook to it's limits -- a good thing. In the process of doing so we're probably also pushing the secure digital port past its design limits -- which weren't terribly encouraging to start with. I suspect that whoever designed the thing figured that a SD card would get shoved in there maybe once -- or even not at all.
Probably ought to be a sticky somewhere that cautions about carefully and delicately inserting and extracting the thing. I also read of someone else whose card would no longer lock in place -- just kept popping out.

I have two Tilts in my possession, one of which is a replacement from AT&T, and the other which will be going into a box and back to them tomorrow.
The problem is that the replacement they sent me has a severely screwed up rubber cap over the SD slot. It looks like the previous owner tried to open it with a flippin' screwdriver and the rubber is all chewed up. Furthermore, the side they fiddled with was the right (hinged) side, which is why they couldn't open it. However, now the right side of the cover is also "pulled out" a little and won't go back into being "flush" with the device.
This probably isn't a returnable problem, so I'm wondering if there's a way to switch the rubber grommets on the two phones? My other phone's is in perfect condition.

Sorry no advice re swapping the covers. But surely if AT&T have sent you a replacement that is damaged, that is enough to deserve a return? What other damage is there you can't see? I know some carriers offer refurbished models as replacements, but doesn't even sound like they've given it a once over! You paid AT&T enough money for this device - I personally would get in touch and ask for a proper replacement!
My two pence/cents worth
Thanks for your two pence worth.
Just made the call to exchange the sucker. Since it's my fourth, I'm hoping for a new one. Some people have all the luck!
Learn more about the exchange process here.
My fourth exchange Tilt appears to be new, and without any of the problems of my first 4 Tilts! My nightmare is over...
I just have a quick question to see if anyone else has encountered this issue and if so whether or not B&N fixed it. My NC has just recently had the back coming off right in the corner by volume buttons. It hasn't been dropped nor have I tried to open it. Also it creaks on the middle of the front bezel on the right side. Any ideas if B&N would take care of it under the 12 year manufacturers warranty?
Not sure on what B&N will do. From what I've read, it really boils down to the rep you get on the phone and their 'ability' to help you. If you get someone that simply follows a script... good luck.
As to the quality of the build, my model wasn't very solid from the start. As soon as I held it to read on it for the first time, I felt the back plate clicking and somewhat loose. Not very impressed but as of now, there's been no separation issues.
I had the exact same problem. There was creaking to the left of the "n" button. It almost seems like some of their hardware doesn't fit properly inside the case. Long story short, they exchanged it. Call 'em up. If they tell you to take it into a store don't accept that. I tried, and the guy at the store told me to call. I eventually got a new one.

Or get the name and agent number of the person on the phone who told you to go to the store and when the store says no you can say "Well, so-and-so from 1-800-THE BOOK whose agent ID is blah-blah said to bring it to the store. So first, exchange my Nook and second contact whoever runs your help line and deal with this type of problem with them."
Also, get the managers name as well. People generally don't give you the run around if you get their names...
They definitely do read from a script. The rep had to go check with a supervisor to see if it is covered. Waiting on a reply. I definitely am no accepting no as an answer.

I will have to exactly this. I was getting the run around from the rep on the phone, and she was definitely reading from a script. She was trying to make it seem as if I had someway caused the backing to come off and so it isnt covered. I told her straight up that the problem is that the glue isnt holding it in place and that the problem is at the juncture of the backing and the volume keys, and that since it is the glue that is the problem it should be covered by the manufacturers warranty. SO after 20 minutes of arguing, I am off to my local store to talk to them with the name and ID number of the phone rep. I am getting this fixed one way or another.
I've noticed the same issue since new, but nothing major. I keep my nook in a leather case so i'm only really touching the screen when using it.
(In general, not to OP since don't think he's under 14-day policy anymore)
If you just got your nook, you might want to consider exchanging --- in the week I had my first one, I noticed creakiness and slight flexing all around the right side from when I first opened it, and it only got worse -- started getting little clicks/pops when I shifted my grip on that side and I noticed the white backlight came through a small part of that side, so it looks like it was probably going to end up unhinged. I'm pretty gentle with my electronics and I had it in an Industriell case since day 1, and it still got worse.
The 2nd one I just got is significantly better built, no creaking at all and the bevel is firm and solid (no flex) everywhere. I know it's only $250 but better to avoid future repair hassles and get a good one now.
I was definitely over the 14 day policy as The nook was a Christmas gift from the wife. I ended up going to the store and had them inspect it to make sure that it was definitely a manufacturer issue. The local rep then proceeded to call and try to get it done for me. Now mind you, the stores have an entirely different number to call about Nook Color returns/exchanges. They don't actually deal with the same tech support we do. They were then giving her the run around even with her manager right next to her telling them it is a warranty issue, that it definitely looks like an adhesion issue, no water damage, no drop damage etc. Finally the rep gave up and just did an exchange anyways and said to screw the corporate that once it got sent back it would never be looked at anyways. And this is why i love my local B&N store.
Awesome! Congrats on getting it exchanged The new one, have you noticed if the bevel is darker than your old one? Mine is very noticeably darker, I compare it to the grey of the B&N Industriell case and my old Nook used to be lighter than the case, this new one is several shades darker (almost black). Wonder if they switched materials/updated design somewhere down the line?
Interesting reading, I got my NC back in March, haven't noticed any of these problems. Maybe it was just a bad batch or something. Good luck with getting your NC's exchanged.
Had the same issue, disassembled the nook according to these instructions in this post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=858697
(Note the switch and battery connectors disconnect by pulling them perpendicularly from the board)
Then used Loctite silicone gasket sealant along the edges where the two shell halves meet, between the entire edge of the back cover where it mates, as well as between the screen frame and metal frame. You'll need something to pry with and T5 screw driver. Took 30 minutes
Now feels as sturdy as an iPad, no squeaks or creaks, and in theory I should still be able to pull it apart again if needed.
Hope this helps someone.

The back cover on mine is loose in the same area...but its just fractions of an 1/8".
I don't know if the heat(what heat?) expanded the metal there, but it wasn't 'loose' when I first bought it.
I'm not too concerned, I bought a cheap silicon glove for it and it has not been that noticeable.
It does look a bit darker. I have also noticed that it looks like the bezel is recessed more than on my previous one. This one just feels a lot sturdier than my first one.

Sounds really interesting.
Did you also remove the bezel ?
Thanks
I have had my nook color sine april of this year. Its been rock solid with none of the issues described in this thread. Just thought I would add in my own observations.
Just recently I started hearing the back cover around where the sim card is begin to rattle when the phone vibrates. Its extremely loud
Has anyone else had this problem? Suggestions on how to fix it?
Cheers
I put a folded up paper towel under the back cover haha it works
Sent from my cappy from the darky 10.2 side using xda premium app
Yeah I'm not sure what I'm going to do... I really is pissing me off to be honest!
Any other thoughts?!
I have yet to find where the rattle is coming from...
If hold the case tight around the top part of the screen, it wont make the rattle either. I'm thinking about taking the phone in and RMA'ing it.
I've tried to put a paper towel behind the battery cover as well as a business card lol
Anyone else have any suggestions?

maybe get a tiny precision screwdriver and tighten all the little screws on the phone. I think there are some under the battery cover. here's the threa that will show where they are -
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=740022
Check the little door that covers the usb port. Check it in the open and closed position.
I dig up an old post about the rattle and another user suggested that I try and remove the SD card and at the time when I tried it, it worked which I thought was odd because I had already checked that once before.
Regardless, the noise came back and AT&T said they will replace the phone but I'm too lazy to drive to the store so I think I'm going to try and tighten everything first... hopefully if all fails it wont void the warranty
the other day my power button stopped working and, since it was past my warranty, i took the phone apart and sprayed some CRC QD electronics cleaner on it to fix the problem. in the process of taking it apart i forgot to take out my sim and sd card and the tray where they fit in came off with the back casing. i put the little ribbon thing on the bottom back in the hole it came out of but it must be messed up because now my phone doesnt recognize my sim or sd. i dont have much experience working with phones and i could find no help online for proper instalation of the sim tray. can someboy tell me how to fix this?
also the speaker and vibration stopped working after my lock button repair but i dont believe i touched any wires connected to that. is it just a coincidence? possible that the cleaner got in there? how can i fix it?
obviously the sim card is my priority right now but any help would be appreciated.
thanks!
I would suggest looking for either connexion2005 (aka mobiletechvideos) or AdamOutler. Both of them are very knowledgeable in the hardware of the Captivate, and I would guess that either of them could help you out with your situation.
I just so happen to have a couple of the SIM/SDCard circuit boards. I'll have to find them. I ordered a few of them while researching UnBrickable Mod. The circuit board is held on with double-sided tape on top of a metallic shield. It's very easy to replace. Anyway, PM sent.

Do I really need a new part? I'm not certain but nothing seems to be broken and everything is intact. It feels more like something is just out of place and not making a connection. If it helps to understand what I'm trying to say I could post a pic for you to evaluate.
The part is cheap and easy to replace.
ok ill try get my paypal in order and get that to you as soon as i can. do you have an idea for why my speaker and vibration isnt working?
Actually I figured out the problem. I took everything out piece by piece and it was just a loose connector under the logic board. Sorry for bothering you with a stupid mistake but thanks for all your help and suggestions
I know, I did something really stupid. I put an MicroSD card in the slot where the Sim Card is supposed to go and now it's stuck. I can't see it.. so I have no idea what to do.
Please help, I have no idea how to get it out.
Can you see it at all? I believe the sd card bay has enough clearence so that a microsd could get lodged inside the body of the device itself. There's nothing besides the tray itself to stop something like that. (which is kinda crazy if something exactly like this happens)
Nope I cannot see it at all :\
I'm not concerned about the sD card itself, I'm just worried that it'll mess up the functionality of the tablet.
The only real risk is that the pins on it might short something out, or a very remote chance it might cause one of the connectors to detach.
You could try and keep shaking it until it falls out or carefully dissassemble it and get your card. I'd personally try the former, the open part of the tray is the one nearest the display, so hold it display faceing down and bay facing down and hope for the best.
I have tried shaking it out for the past couple of minutes with no results.
There is no rattling sound however, so is that a good thing?
There are no visible screws of any sort for me to take it apart, so if you know of a a way that I can do so, I'd greatly appreciate it if you would share it with me.
If it's not rattleing then it might be jammed up against something, as far as damaging the internals that's a good thing. As long as you dont let it rattle around inside it, it shouldnt be a huge issue.
I made a guide on dissassembling it, it's around here somewhere. But tl;dr the first step is held together by glue and it's a huge hassle to dissassemble and reassemble unless you dont care about casuing cosmetic damage.

If it's held together by glue, I doubt I will have the patience to reassemble it xD
Are there any other options that you know of that I can try?
But nonetheless, thank you for helping

How exactly did you manage to get it out? I've bent a paper clip out so that it was long enough for me to stick it in there and I tried to press it down and slide it out with no results - I don't even know if I was actually touching the card or not :\
If you could provide some details on how you were able to get it to pop out, that'd be great.
Thanks
