Terrible battery life - Touch CDMA Android Development

I've searched through these forums/threads to try and find out how to improve battery life when using Android from SD card. Even when the screen is off for almost the whole time, my battery will only last about 6 hours. Contrast this with WM6.1 when my battery lasts 4 days.
I have turned off data. (I've also read in places to turn off "background" data, but I'm not sure how to do that? I've not seen an option to do that anywhere - I'm using Incubus froyo)
What is draining the battery, and how do I get it to last longer?

you know if your going to post a thread complaining about something the least you could do is tell us anything about the set up your running
what nbh are you using?
what build are you using?
are you using a vogue, kaiser, or polaris?
also a forum search for this question would probably go a long way too

I did not mean to sound like I was complaining...I'm just searching for solutions to this issue. As I stated previously, I have searched through the forums and have tried to do some of the things suggested to increase battery life, but it hasn't helped much.
I have a Vogue, running off SD card. I'm using the latest haret and Incubus Froyo (v. 16 I think).
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

what is the date on the Zimage you are using?

The date on the Zimage is 9.3.10. This is from haret-for-kernel-2-6-32.exe
My apologies, I am actually using SagaRom's RLS4 froyo ultralite, NOT incubus' build.

try using a zimage not based on the 2.6.32 kernel its still considered very experimental and i know they were having issues with the console not actually sleeping.
running froyo with data on and heavy use i used to get about a day out of my phone using the old kernel give it a shot

Thank you, I'll give it a try. I seemed to me that although the screen would go off, the battery life was acting like it never actually went to sleep, so what you say about 2.6.32 not sleeping makes sense to me.

Thanks thoughtlesskyle, that was definitely the problem. I rolled back to a previous version, and the battery life is much better.

no prob, sorry for sounding like a jerk

I don't use my phone all that much, and I don't have data so that adds up to long battery life. When the phone was new I could go almost a week without charging!

I can agree to that, I never use my vogue... it's only use to me is so family can call me locally (moved and never changed the number on it), with WM6.1 and 6.5 I could go 4-5 days before it needed to be plugged in. When I first flashed donut I'd get 8 hours with data on, and could go 24 hours with it off, now with froyo it dosn't matter what's on or off 8-10 hours is it... tho I will say i'm out of date on kernel and image (using inc's v11, and kernel from july since that's the last one i've seen supporting 320x480)

Too bad you require the higher res because the latest nbh and rls15 has greatly improved battery life. I get at least what your getting in terms of battery time, however, I have google background data to sync my email, calendar and contacts and I use it during the day to check my RSS feeds, write some emails, make some phone calls, and play some board games.

Btw, anybody have already tried Incubus Super Froyo 10.5 and rls15, which one have a better battery life ?

I was using the latest one. (ie. voguimg-240x320-2.6.32-froyo-08-09-10_17.nbh and I'm currently using the 09-09 version too).
I've tried both 10.5 and 15 and I would say that both are very similar in terms of battery usage.

Leaked Roms Stopped... is Official on the way ?

Well after some busy days where are always leaked a new fw, in the last days that stopped.
It's an indicator that the official rom should be on Kies at any moment ?
What's the leakers oppinion ?
Until now several one appeared, and in my point of view there are a couple questions:
- Radio is still mono
- Lag is terrible! In other part of the forum someone had answered me that Galaxy Tab still continues using RFS filesystem, so i think it will not change
- Battery drain is awesome...last two days battery didn't survive from 8AM to 11PM ... ouch
- TwLauncher in JPK still in sometimes stopps.
When the official froyo? What will change ?
The official release should be really close to JPK, so don't expect miracles

I'll bet the GPS just can't be fixed, it's a hardware problem.

Hah if you're gonna buy a phone based on GPS you've already lost the battle. Get a real gps device already! They're dirt cheap and will get much better reception than a cell phone. I don't get people buying a cell phone based on GPS... call quality sure, but GPS?! Hahah stoooopid!

I have been using JPK for days already and the GPS works fine. Only battery drain is a bit high, last night after some quite intensive usage my battery died on me after 5 hours :O. This was with eBuddy, latitude, internet radio for about an half hour and some internet browsing. I don't know if I really asked too much of the battery but I think the Eclair firmwares are indeed better in battery life.

[Q] How to tell when you need a new battery?

I'm posting this question because I'm sort of confused, I've had my hero since July and since then have ran every rom to date. Now I'm running AospMod 9.9.2 and have never witnessed such horrible battery life. I know it has nothing to do with this rom because I used to get f*cking awesome battery life almost 2 days without charging. Now I'm lucky if I get 6 hours moderate use... Charged to 93 this morning, still on charger rebooted to install keyboard, loaded back up dropped to 73...
I've done all sorts of calibration nothing works, Can I please get some insight on my problem before I buy a new battery? Thanks in advance!

It might be the ROM. Did you change back to a different one to see how it worked? If it went for almost 2 days a few days prior then drops to a 6 hour usage I highly doubt it's the battery itself. When my G1 battery went it started to lose time very fast at the end but it did it gradually over months before I had to get a new one.

You might have a zombie process or an app with a mem leak something is really eating that battery. Some apps/Widgets are poorly written and can cause battery issues. Typical life of a battery should be about 2 years(if that) before it starts to not hold a charge anymore though. There's a way to check which zombie process or mem leak could be killing your battery it would easily tell you. I wish I could give you the link but I'm on my phone. Flipz tells you how to do this on his site.
UPDATE: I found the link dude.

State of CM9 alphas

For CM7 we had a thread with all the known major issues (and solutions) for the most recent roms.
CM7 now is almost perfect and pretty complete. CM9 is still in alpha though and (obviously) seems to have a lot of issues.
Can someone who flashes nightlies / kangs please give a short overview what doesn't work or what does cause problems? Also stability and power issues would be interesting.
Of course there are still problems with video hardware acceleration but what about other areas which are GPU relevant like browser, games or any app that isn't just a list really? What about the sound drivers, do they work in general? does listening to music while using other apps work that also output sound (for example music + navigation or podcast + navigation)?
I think this would be very helpful to a lot of people (me included of course )
Why didnt i think of that?
Silly me that reads this tiny thread... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1347118
I didn't find anything useful via search which I didn't know from blogs / g+; as I didn't want to read up on as of now 1256 posts in that thread I had hoped someone could take 1 minute of his time and give a quick run-down.
I was hoping for a serious answer or a sarcastic one which took at least as long to write but would be really douchy. You just linked the thread so I'm not sure what to think lol
i use cm9 daily and i have not seen much problems. its smoother than any other rom i used, the battery holds much longer. whe listening to live streams it would not last longer than 6.5hours, yet on cm9 it holds for 9.5, i also dont need to charge every night or have the battery drained in the morning which was the worst thing and happend for me on all the other roms.
what does not work... let me see, the latest version of opera doesnt work. sometimes it takes a long time to get a data connection, but i think that is because my wifi switches on and off a lot. other than that i dont have any problem and i definitely wont go back to any gb rom.

Thanks a bunch dude! The improvement on the battery from stock to cm7 was awesome already, getting even more out of it would be great. I assume you are listening via 3g right? getting more than 6 hours is quite an achievement there.
I switch a lot back and forth between wlan / 3g though so I guess I have to wait a bit for that to be sorted out.

no im listening over wifi, but the battery usage reflects all over for me, usually i had to worry about my battery even on 2g, now i dont have any worrys, even on 3g it lasts longer than on 2g before.i guess its because it basicly uses 0 battery while not using it while on other roms it constantly drained as if i was using the device.

Cyanogenmod 7.2 battery life

How's u guys battery life on CM 7.2? On my Ace, it seems that the battery is discharging much faster than the stock rom.
What would you suggest? I read something about battery life kernels, but not sure what to do.
Thanks,
It seems it may be a false battery charge indication. I saw a couple other threads about this. i tried a calibration app, but it didnt work. I even charged to 100% and reset in clockwork. As soon as i unplug, it went down to 92%, then 10 min later, 80%. This is just on standby!
Any ideas?
Battery calibration is a myth! The battery_stats.bin file only has info for the battery use screen.
Not sure about it now, but cm7.2 used to have battery drain problems.
What rom are you you using?

Battery calibration is not a myth, the myth is saying that helps you battery life, what it really does is give you a more accurate reading of the battery charge. Your battery will have the same life.
Your battery life on any CM will drain faster than on a stock rom, maybe a bit better, but not much of a difference.
You need to charge your phone to 100 %, check in settings, about phone, state (i have my rom in spanish, so i don't know if it will say "state" it's just a guess) and the first option you will see says "Battery State" and it should say "Charged" or something that tells you that it's done charging.
I mean, when u charge your phone, although u can see that your battery is full, you should wait until in the lockscreen says "charged" instead of "charging" or something like that.
Hope it helps!
I am in the process of calibrating right now. I charged to 100% and now im draining completelto 0%. Then recharging back to 100% with no breaks. I got these instructions from another thread. Ive got every radio on (gps wifi bluetooth) and the torch. Been that way for over 2 hours and it says 16% right now. Ill let u all know what happens. Thanks again!
Oh im on the last cooper version that says stable. I had trouble with thr touchscreen not working right on nightly for some reason. Any known issues with this one?
Cyanogenmod have battery problems, especially if you are using an unofficial version. If this is your case, you can try use firekernel, otherwise use the official one, some say it have the best battery life.

Be careful, force the phone to discharge fast can decrease the battery life. I think the best to do is use it normally during the day till the battery finish and look if is there some application using lots of cpu or if the deep sleep is working right.
Watch for the torch app, the app itself says that u should keep it on 20 min maximum i think.
I didnt tried nightly, sorry!
I did try stable and everything worked perfect i think so it should be fine

i hear ya. i dont think i burned out the flash led. i left the phone on all night (not the torch) and it finally died. Stayed on 8% for at least an hour! so now i have to charge it back to 100% with no breaks.

CyanogenMod basically means = fast (besides nice looking haha) and it also has different options to save battery (i don't remember an example of one of them), but being fast costs you battery life. For example, Apocalypse Final version with blackhawk kernel with antutu benchmark gave me a 2200 score (without oc), with firekernel (the one that brings the rom) it gave me a a number much lower (i think it was 1900). But using sgs2 v9, the one im using right now, it gives me a 1900 score and i can say it is fast enough and battery lasts longer that using any cm version.
i know bechmarks are not exactly, it's just to explain my point of view.
With cm u can have good battery life too but in a stock based rom battery will always (or 80 % of the cases) be better.

i use cwm AND titanium, just in case. I like to have a barebone ROM and then installing the apps and data i want. For some apps i want the data too and some apps i want only the app.

Also can i just copy the backup folder to my pc without damaging it?

Yes, it's usually what most people do, leave the original copy of the nandroid backup on your sd and make a copy of it and save it in your pc. Then if everything went well after flashing the rom you can just erase the copy of your pc
i just did a backup with both. the CW backup is much larger. Is this because it backed up the whole rom? Like a clone of the phone?

[Q] Cyanogenmod 11 battery issues

Since i switched to Maclaw's CM 11 about a month ago and i had no trouble with the phone untill i updated to version 3/8 and the versions after that..the battery gets drained fast even when the phone is always underclocked to 200 MHz which never made an issue for me in terms of being a bit slow.
It used to drop just 1% every 15 min with heavy data use..a lot of the time it even lasted more than that! Now drops 1% every 5 min or less with the same heavy data use!!!
What went wrong?
It's just CM 11. Remember, it's still under heavy development, so it's not 100% yet. Don't worry, they'll get it fixed.

I do hope they do.
Does Carbon has that battery drain problem too or is more stable than CM?

I have the same problem, but haven't tracked down what it is that that drains the battery other than Android system.

Yeah but something changed after that 3/25 version. I've updated to the latest version yesterday and will put it under test today; hopefully the problem will be gone.

Got a lot better with Carbon without doing any more scientific research into what was eating my battery. If you still have CM installed, maybe a simple "top -m 10" in an adb shell will give a clue to what the power drain is. (I'm new to adb and forget how easy it is can be to have a linux shell on my phone. :silly

well i found out that my solution didn't really work. but i now have a new solution which seems to work, i got this from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2683451 by factorexh
1. tick "set on boot" at governor and i/o of cpu, then set governor to abbysplug and i/o to sio
I set it like this and it seems to work but not 100% sure since it's the first day
So i installed Carbon and left it for 2 days and the battery was better but then i flashed CM back and the problem was still there. So i flashed the Stock rom back, rooted the phone then installed CM...at first everything seems back to normal but later that day the battery little started draining faster!
I thought that maybe coz i disabled/froze some system and built in apps that it what caused the problem but now i made sure i didnt disable any app, only force stop some non system appsm j and found the battery still draining!m
I have only 4 things running in my "Running apps" section:
1- Settings
2- Greenify
3- Setcpu (underclocked to 200)
4- Smart keyboard trial
THAT'S ALL!!

i don't know about that maybe your batt is demaged but still
CM11 the 20th 3rd 14th version mentioned a change about battery life.. they update the zip very often just check if the zip has another date in the name then flash it...
and try to change what i said above.. about stock i don't know how to help but i have my battery now for longer than half a day on and it's on 64 with display on mid-high
How fast is the battery charging(with the original charger). If it charges from empty to full very fast, then it's probably a bad battery. Both mine and my wife's battery has died on us after just a year of use, so it seems like the sIII mini's batteries is not lasting much more than 400 cycles.

It's the original battery, i havent changed it yet. I've just started using this phone like 2 or 3 months ago!
I'll see that governor trick, it may help. I'll update to the latest CM and see if there's any difference and keep you posted.

It charges from 20% to full in about 3 hours or a bit more. Is that bad? Original battery and charger.

Yeah, i've noticed. It's kinda a pain to keep downloading and flashing on a daily basis though.
Do you have Wifi/mobile data on during those hours?
I dont have Skype nor Viber, Whatsapp, Facebook messenger and all those messenger apps.
Mind if i asked you if you disabled any apps? System or downloaded?
And what's your current LCD density? Mine is 200, i tried to go for 180 but the phone started acting a bit weird.

thats all cause i just installed CM and didn't save the apps...
i had wifi and mobile both on most of the day yeah...
