[Q] Upagrading to Froyo NOT through AT&T - From New Zealand - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi Im pretty new to this forum and just bought myself a Samsung
Captivate(AT&T) from US. I know the official Froyo update is not
available yet but it sounds like when it officially gets released it will
be over the air update via AT&T. Obviously I am not running my phone on
AT&T network (on NZ Vodafone), I am not quite sure how the update process
will work for me over here. If anyone have an idea how I'd get the update
when it gets released, I would love to find out. By the way they only sell
Vibrant from the official NZ vodafone shops, no Captivate!
Thanks in advance.

I'm sure someone here will have it all tweaked up and posted long before att gets around to releasing it...

Actually, from some tweets a few days ago, Samsung admits that Captivate won't have update through OTA because AT&T doesn't support it. It will be through some desktop software that we don't know yet (AT&T version doesn't have Kies software). But rest asured, you will find a leaked firmware that you can flash using odin3 software (checkout Captivate Android development sub-forum).

I too would like to see that cause I can't find it anywhere.

It's from Android And Me tweets reporting what they heard in a Samsung Q&A session in IFA 2010.
EDIT: here is the link: http://twitter.com/androidandme/statuses/22908052128?client_source=tns

That would make sense then. I'd want to test that method before pushing to a bunch of phones. It could be awhile for an update for us :-(

Then why does the phone have a "Software Update" option in settings?

Well that option could be not activated like the Aria's was. It just got an update that enabled it HERE is the link to the article. It was still only 2.1 but it enabled the FOTA update, we might see the same thing here soon.

"SoftwareRevision"="I9000XXJF3/I9000SWC/I9000XXJF3/I9000XXJF3"
"ProductCode"="GT-I9000HKDXEE"
"HIDSWVER"="I9000XXJF3/I9000SWC/I9000XXJF3/I9000XXJF3"
People in denmark cant update to froyo using reg hack, they only gets 2,1 updates during the reg hack..

Correct thats what the support said..
well that's too bad, but at least I was able to upgrade my Galaxy S to froyo two days ago and so far I haven't noticed any bugs or anything like that
I've even rooted my Galaxy S and everything seems to work fine
well except for whenever I'm using the internet browser, whenever I try to access my bookmarks, it seems to lag for like a second before it takes me to my bookmarks, and also whenever I click on a website, it takes like a second before the phone starts loading the page, where as to before I've upgraded to froyo 2.2 and rooted my phone, it would instantly take me to my bookmarks without any lag, and it would also instantly start loading up the webpage when I clicked it :-\ but when it does start loading, it does seem like it's loading the page faster than it did when it was on 2.1
but other than those two little problems, It really does feel like the phone has become faster in every aspect

Initially it feels fast....but after you get about 200MB of apps installed you notice it's starting to slow down.
I moved all the apps I could to SD (Froyo supports this)...and that seemed to help.
But there are also some apps that are terrible hogs - like Tweetdeck. If you install that, be prepared to go SLOW. I put up with it for a day, but uninstalled it about 30 minutes ago after waiting nearly 3 minutes for it to respond......must be a serious memory leak or something in that app.
Location (Ireland)
Network (Meteor)
I'm still getting the "Cannot be updated" when I try to update using Keis
Samsung have re-uploaded the JPM source on the open source website...
so, hopefully, they will re-enable the Froyo updates soon on Kies...
I still don't understand why Samsung does not allow OTA updates...
perhaps, because they wont be able to roll those updates back?

[Q] OMG! i have problem.. pz help me

i used zio by UBI telecom.
as you know, UBI telecom 'zio' still has 2.1 version.
But i want to proyo, so i tried so hard.
i was follow this thread

but update failed. why i had problem?
and i don't use my phone now... [fastboot mode repeat and repeat..]
Please give me a tip. At least, i want to go back 2.1 version of zio.
You should probably take it to a UBI store near you to have it fixed. That post is meant for the cricket service. I'm sure the store near you has the recovery. Unless someone here has one you can use.
Your provider uses the sprint ZIO. You will need to use the sprint update, your best bet would be to go to where you bought the phone.

Well I wouldn't even mention to your phone carrier that you tried to manually update to an early "leaked" 2.2 froyo update. They will probably charge you even more if you tell them what you did. Take it to them so that they can unbrick your Zio.
Instead create some crazy story that makes sense and hopefully that you have insurance and warranty for your Zio.

Are updates dependent on being logged onto AT&T or are they delivered via internet?

Are updates dependent on being logged onto AT&T or are they delivered via internet?
I am on a mvno and the phone works fine. But I can't update. IS there an alternate area for downloading updates or does AT&T only update through their system?

But my question remains. I want to find out if I CAN update being on another network besides at&t. When updates are available. For instance, what does a person get who IS on at&t get when they tell it to check for updates. I get "server error".
Will these updates (assuming there will be some) be downloadable from the internet or does one have to be registered with at&t?
To put it to you simply, if you are using an unlocked AT&T device on another carrier. I don't think you will be able to get any AT&T pushed updates for your device. I might be wrong, but I don't think you'd be able to get it running on a carrier other than AT&T with one of their devices.

Well, it works perfectly as a phone and for data and it is locked and not rooted. Since the mvno leases from at&t it works fine.
But I suspect I will never be able to get updates so I am considering selling it unless I can find a way around this. Even though it can now be rooted and it can be unlocked, if the updates are only pushed to registered at&t users and can never be downloaded or sent as regular files, then I am screwed.
ANY other thoughts or ideas, anyone?

I know there are no guarantees in life, but in your best estimate, do you think they will be locked in any way (check to see if it is on AT&T network or some other silly stuff) and that I should be able to use them? Is there a post of the current factory rom anywhere?
I ask all this because I like the Vivid, but I only have 3 days to return it if I am going to.

99.99% sure we will have an RUU available when there is an update. this means it is not dependent on the network updates, but you can install the update from your computer.

If your rooted, regardless of carrier, you don't need to worry about updates. The updates will be provided by the devs. Whether it be an RUU or incorporated into their ROM update.

I will probably root soon, but I am waiting for a bit of maturity on the customs roms.
Yeah, that'll take some time. The ROMs that ya'll do have, are currently being worked through for bugs and the like. Seeing as how some were already there for the Raider as it was the first to be unlocked. With the Vivid now unlocked, those ROMs that were for the Raider are being updated to allow them to be flashed on the Vivid. In the next few months we should see some more ROMs get produced as more devs come to the Vivid.

Stuck on 2.2.2. Will I be forever ?

I just got a lg revo brand new from eBay and it seems to be stuck on 2.2.2. I did a master restore and it had an update which I thought was 2.3, but I guess it was just a spammer 2.2 update. Will I ever get 2.3 or am I stuck on 2.2? I read on a lg forum that the 2.3 update is no longer on Verizon's servers.

To answer the original question, you will likely get the update eventually. I was talking to a verizon rep for a while (about a separate problem) and they mentioned that they push out the updates in stages ie not everyone at once. They do that to prevent overloading their servers unnecessarily.
If you don't want to do the manual (tot file) method you could try calling them and asking for it. There is a method they can walk you through to manually make your phone "ask the server" for the update. You jsut might have to work up to "level 2" tech support to get it...
(I've spent WAY too much time on the phone with tech support...)
I spent over 6 hours on the phone with tech support & was told to have the phones replaced. I got to 2nd tier & then the supervisor... Just got the phones Feb 2nd & they told me that they could not guarantee any updates for 90 days.... Said "Screw it", got the .tot file & burned it, then rooted, then Gingervolted.... SOOOOOOOOO MUCH HAPPIER !!!!!!

Wow.. It could have been that they offered me the update because they'd already sent me 2 replacement phones that still had the reboot constantly problem... Who knows... It could just depend on who you talk to I suppose.
I also went with gingervolt, despite eating my battery I absolutely love it. The speed increase and lack of bing alone make it worthwhile!

Yeah I remember the sextape leaks. I've had the SII, SIII, and both S4s (single and tri-band). So I remember flashing several leaked builds on my SIII particularly. It's painfully obvious that hardly anybody has or cares about the tri-band S4 around here. The single band still seems to get some support, but I guess there just aren't that many people that have the tri-band version. Plus a lot of people have moved on to the S5, which I'm going to do myself soon. I figure this will probably be the last update the S4 gets, and NG2 was probably the last update for the single band as well.

"Biggest" change is International WiFi calling. Also HD Voice Icon - which I don't need. I can tell when I'm using HD Voice because it sounds TERRIBLE. Sounds like it's using the lowest possible bit-rate and the worst possible compression that they can still call audible (NOT intelligible) speech. I can't believe how horrible it sounds. I can't believe they are making such a big deal about downgrading the voice quality. I guess they think if they advertise enough about how great it is we won't notice how TERRIBLE it actually is. I literally have a hard time understanding what people are saying when HD voice is active. It sounds like they have a pillow over their microphone. It's stupendously bad. Call quality used to be one of Sprint's few strengths. It makes me wonder if anybody in charge has a clue. I even called and got someone in tech support to ask about it and before I could even finish my question he said "it sounds pretty bad doesn't it?" VOLTE can't come soon enough... And they'll probably find a way to make that sound terrible too.
I know in THEORY HD Voice should sound better, so maybe it's just Sprint's implementation of it that's lacking. And maybe it's just bad where I live. I haven't had any experience with it anywhere else. But my experience with it where I live has been really bad.
I'm not the only one who's not thrilled about "HD Voice":

No I haven't gotten it yet either. I kind of understand why google takes so long to push their updates out, and then I kind of don't understand it either. When windows has updates, they are available to everyone immediately. When Apple updates iOs, it's available to everyone immediately. If they can do it, I wonder why google doesn't/can't do the same. I mean google is a big company, surely they can make their servers robust enough to handle the load of people downloading updates if Microsoft and Apple can. I know part of it is we are on a wireless network, but Samsung could at least make them available in Kies right away. That would take that traffic off of the wireless network. And again, Samsung surely should have the resources to handle the load of people downloading updates. It's so frustrating that they take their sweet time pushing out Android updates. It's the same with their own products. I have several Nexus tablets in my family, and it takes forever for them to get updates too.
Anyway, I will let you know when/if I finally get the update.
