Currently I'm at baseband jh2 running the jm7 firmware. My question is how do I only upgrade the baseband leaving everything else in tact? Also will I gain any benefits by upgrading to the jh7 baseband?

Since you stated you hsve been trying hard for weeks.. This is the only method that I think will work for you:
Flash hardcore's k10h kernel.
Go to recovery.
Activate superuser (root).
Reboot.
Try reading the xda forum more moving forward.

You can download a stock Froyo rom for your model on Www.samfirmware.com.
See instructions how to flash on Xda forums.

I called samsung south africa this afternoon, they provided me with the following for my device in south africa.
Model Number: GT-P1000
Firmware Version: 2.2
Baseband Version: P1000XXJMA
Kernel Version 2.6.32.9 [email protected] #1
Build Number: FROYO.XWJMI
I found it on samfirmware and flashed it using Odin etc.
Now im running the stock rom I initially had.
I have connected device to PC with Samsung Kies, it now tells me that my current version is the latest version. So this means the update for Gingerbread 2.3.3 is still not available in South Africa.
I will go back to Overcome Kratos which was running quite fine thanks
Thanks everyone for your input and advice
any idea how to?
Kies does not support custom rom

I am wondering why it is that every rom that I flash make me lose signal. I've tried updating to gingerbread and the baseband from that and no signal. I've tried other roms meant for froyo and still no luck. I've even tried changing frequencies when on these roms and nothing helps. Any ideas?

My stock rom works fine, its just any other rom. Also I didn't need to reflash the froyo baseband to get stock working again.

Same thing here. Just flashed GB baseband and i lost signal completely. Also on rogers p925g. Why is it not working if GB baseband is flashed?
Just to be clear i flashed GB rom after GB baseband.
The only gb baseband is from the p920 international euro version which doesn't provide 850mhz reception which is still used this side of the pond.

I'm not sure if flashing this modem on an ICS modem will work, but there's the file for you
Use a cm7 radio for ics.. and flash through cwm
