Only Hard Reset
U dont need to flash the new ROM or the Original ROM.
U do a HardReset only, after HR, ur device look like brandnew
I am having a very hard and frustrating time trying to get into recovery mode. Basically I installed a ROM today that was very unstable, and when I go to rom manager trying to flash a different ROM the screen just goes black any help would be greatly appreciated thankyou.

Unless u wanna flash AOSP roms (CM or MIUI) or maybe froyo roms stay away from that app. To get to recovery the easiest would be to flash a kernel with cwm backed in. Download this package http://www.mediafire.com/?tx56ypyw8wx4c8n. Open ODIN_Kernel_Flasher in 2 - Kernel folder, add Kernel.tar to PDA, uncheck auto reboot, Connect your phone in download mode to PC and hit start. Once complete pull the battery and reboot your phone in recovery mode. Wipe data (factory reset), cache and dalvik cache and then flash a rom of ur choise. In case u'd want a GB (gingerbread) rom coming from stock or froyo rom first u'll HAVE TO flash gb bootloaders before the rom. U'll find the gb bootloader flasher in the package u downloaded, check out the readme file as well.
Now something else is going on with the phone. It was fine and charging when I went to bed now the freaking thing is stuck in a boot loop =(, the odin version you told me to download will it also fix this issue? Or do I need a different one?
If u can get it into download mode ur all fine, as for which Odin, u'll find everithing ur looking for in that package I've linked. Once extracted go trough the readme file.
Edit: which rom did u come from and which one did u flash last?
I came from an obsession rom which was the unstable one, flashed to darkys rom. I still can not get it into recovery mode I will give the odin link you posted a try thanks for all of your help

Does ODIN not recognize that the captivate is hooked up?
I tried to upgrade to a new Mintberry MIUI ROM and my phone got stuck in a bootloop. After flashing a .pit and the EZ GB bootloaders via Odin, then a Galnet MIUI Chameleon ROM, my phone still will not start properly - it keeps booting into Recovery Mode only (I can get in to Download mode if necc), and that's it. Does anyone have any ideas what I can do to resolve this? When trying to restore a previous backup I just get an error message about a bad checksum and this fails as well.
Starting to fear the worst!
I have a NEO kernel.zip and a couple of MIUI.zip ROMS on the sdcard, but whatever I try I can only get the phone to boot into Recovery.

Flash it with Odin. Something must have went wrong somewhere.

First of all, I just suggested that.
Second of all, why would you link to another site for guides on how to flash custom ROMs? This is XDA Developers. There are more than enough tutorials here. The OP just needs to utilize that new search feature they implemented just yesterday.
Heimdall One-Click and forget it. http://files.teamkomin.com/index.php?dir=i9000SGS/
Have rooted my phone.....Once my motherboard had failed....So got a new one......Now it shows that i caanot upgrade the phone via KIES.....My phone is Currently Rooted.....Will there be any problem if I put a custom rom in it.....
You can flash a custom RoM without any problem
but you will need some things
1.CWM Recovery v5(search for it in SGA forums)
2.Custom ROM zip file(download your Favorite RoM)
3.Basic Custom ROM flashing Knowledge and How to operate the CWM 5 Recovery
Some custom ROMs have Specific flashing procedure so do read the OP post of the Custom ROM thread if there is a different flashing procedure or not.
if the flashing procedure is same then you can continue flashing the ROM using standard flashing procedure.
Do Read The OP Post of the Custom ROM thread very carefully before attempting a flash and it is normal that after you flash the Custom ROM it takes a little long than usual to boot up so don't worry, your phone is not bricked if it takes a long time to boot.It usually takes 5-10 mins to boot after a ROM flash
if u need more help then ask.
If something goes wrong will i be able to get back to 2.3.6 gingerbread....

Yes you have to flash stock firmware via odin...
Sent from my GT-S5830
I've just tried to factory reset my N950F, that had custom rom. This didn't remove my media files for some reason, so I did a full wipe from TWRP.
This has sent me into a bootloop, however I can still get into the download screen for odin. I've tried flashing TWRP again with this but while my laptop says pass it is stuck on 'Downloading, do not turn off target'.
I'm now waiting to download https://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/galaxy-note8/SM-N950F/BTU/download/N950FXXU5DSB2/259437/ am I doing something wrong or do I have to return to stock in order to use the phone again?
Would rather have TWRP and install a custom ROM.
Thanks all,
Andy
Download firmware, flash it with Odin run wait till device turn on, wait some time. Then just simply flash your ROM, root and stuff
