[Q]Mystery of the bricked phone. Anyone wanna try solving? - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So AT&T sent me a Warranty Replacement for the sleeping death problem. Im talking about every 2 or 3 minutes. Sometimes I cant even turn it on even with the USB cable plugged in.
The replacement just arrived today without battery. I put my old battery in and I get the same thing. Phone wouldnt turn on. It might turn on if I plug the USB cable in. And it would turn off again in about 2 or 3 minutes. So I am thinking its the battery thats causing the random shutdown and sleeping death.
Or is it possible I got another phone with the same problem? I cant turn both phones on while plugged in without the battery. Is that normal?
Im going to try to buy a new battery tomorrow to test out the battery theory. HOpefully the Corporate store carries it.

Just from your description it sounds like the battery. Is it possible to get a brand new Captivate with the exact same problem after you inserted the battery from the old phone?

Yeah it really does sound like a battery issue. Have you plugged the phone in a bit with the battery inserted without powering on?
Battery might just be discharged, you should get a battery charge status on-screen after plugging it into the charger

If im lucky, the battery status screen will come up and say 100%. If Im more lucky, I can power the phone on with the cable plugged in but then the phone would turn off by itself few minutes after I unplug the cable.
Can anyone confirm this for me. If see if you can turn the phone on while plugged in but no battery

Well I'm plugged into my computer's USB but nope, can't power on without battery.
You may have gotten either another defective handset or your battery is fubar

The funny thing is, if you yank the battery while it's plugged in the phone will stay on... just won't start without the battery present =P

I wrongly accused the oc kernel to be the culprit of the sleepin death issue. What a ****

Haha well theres always the possibility that you got smacked with two busted handsets... however unlikely that might be now time to scream at AT&T till they give you a non suck battery to confirm the problem.
Hopefully they didn't stick you with a handset without key combinations... make sure you get the replacement battery before you ship back your original handset and verify the problem... the replacement might not have download mode key combos, so test it all out and make sure you dont get screwed

this mystery is pretty much solved. thanks guys

Reboots after I remove the batter

What the heck is going on?
I'm pretty sure this has nothing to do with the ROM, because it did this with the factory ROM, Manila 2d and now WM6.5.
I turned the phone off, unplugged it, removed the battery. I put the battery back in, replace the cover and press the power button. Nothing happens. I plug the phone back in to the wall charger and put power, it turns on....for about 3 seconds then reboots and it would seem that it will do this for as long as I let it go. If I unplug the phone while this is going on, it will die.
The last time this happened, it took it about a day and a half to sort itself out. It almost seems like its a battery issue.
Any thoughts or ideas?
UPDATE!
I took the sim card out of the phone for a few seconds and the phone seems to be working now.... But its been up and running for about 20 minute now with no sings of acting up.

tried to charge the pda all night the light stayed orange and never turned green indicating full charge. tried hard reset and when it goes in to prepare rom it shuts off like dead battery. when i plug in the pda to charge battery and then turn on the phone it freezes on splash screen. if i turn on phone then plug in to charge it acts like i havn't pluged in charger. is it the pda or battery?
I am not 100% sure on this, but to me it sounds like the battery.. and that is a MUICH cheaper option to test out... unfortunatly you ahveto wait for shippng typicalyl unless you have a friend who has the same phone.. I got 2 backups and a stand alone charger now... The other option could be your USB port... I have not heard this specific problem with them.... but I am a PC tech and have seen very simmilar problems with laptops... Usually the first think to for is the power port... Just like out phone, if the device is not on a flat surface and such when it is plugging it, it tweaks the port and it eventualyl breaks... on laptops it is not uncommon that when plugged in, the LEF wil light up saying it is getting power to charge, but it enver charges the battery, and even sometimes can;t power up the full system.. .It sort of sounds like this is what you phone is doing as well.. .If that is the problem the stand alone charger would work (my son broke off his usb all together and now syncs via bluetooth and jsut changes batteries.. he has 3 himself as well) If you search online, you can usualyl find a kti with a battery or 2 and a charger/dockign station for under $20US total. Good luck!

tried bootloader and installed official att rom and never shut off. when it was finished with install same issues appeared. help
For anyone facing this issue I would not recommend wasting money on a new battery as this issue has been around with few users since the Kaiser "Tilt" first came out and I've never seen ANY reports that a new battery fixes this. People have bought new batteries, fully charged their battery from a docking station, tried their friends fully charged battery all with the same result. I had this power down issue a Looong time ago my first week in with the Kaiser and managed a fix and am using the same battery now. Although it seems the battery is not being fully charged it's important to leave it charging until you'd assume it's fully charged and get into bootloader mode and flash an official htc Tytn 2 rom. It should flash completely, and the fact that it does not die immediately as on normal boot indicates it is not the battery but the rom. It did take me the whole afternoon of Flashing, recharging and repeating before it finally kicked in. Also, from reading older posts, it seems most if not all users like myself fixed this by flashing the older official htc wm 6.0; worth a shot at least.

Yup, that is what I had to today (I hard reset, actually), with barely enough battery life to do this.
Then the bloody unit came up and was charging - amazing, really!
(Was using the official HTC 6.1 upgraded WindowsMobile OS)
here is my 2 cents....
I owned five Tilts, replaced four of them with warranty issues ... so i have faced this dilemma on at least two of them.
First see if the USB tongue is loose. To do this try to gently tap it with the stylus. If the tongue inside the USB port is loose then you will be facing rebooting and other issues and troubles in the future. The USB tongue gets used and jerked every time you connect your device to your PC or wired headset. If you are still under warranty and the USB connector tongue is loose I recommend returning the phone ( if you still can) and getting a replacement. There is no easy fix for a loose USB connection tongue as i have taken one apart and it is very difficult to repair or replace and very easy to mess it up further.
So, my advice to all Kaiser owners... be careful when plugging and unplugging your phones through the USB. Do it gently as the connectors are very fragile.
For those that have the above issues, I recommend using a separate battery charger tray, avoid plugging the USB as much as you can, and if you must, then administer extra care. The rebooting will stop if you plug the USB cable to the device and move it up and down a hair then holding steady. And most likely you will not get a full charge or even a partial charge. The biggest culprit to this problem is car chargers, and second, is inserting the stylus by mistake (when it is dark and hard to see) in the USB port instead of the Reset hole by accident.

[Q] SGS won't start anymore - (no brick)

Hi there,
yesterday I removed the battery of my mobile to replace it with
a charged one. Since then the phone is "dead". I cannot start it
anymore. No reactions on pluggin in the charger, no charging symbol,
nothing. Also no reactions on 3-button-mode.
Does anybody have any ideas what might have happend?
Thanks for any support,
Grobie
try a long press on the power button. sometimes it will kick in after about 30 seconds to a minute. It did for me once
Did you try putting your old battery back in?
Double check battery contacts/pins on phone to make sure that they haven't been damaged?

Thank you guys!
I do have 3 (original Samsung) batteries and an external charger.
The batteries are all charged and in good shape. I don't think this
is the problem. In addition the phone stays "dead" even when connected
to the AC charger. No charging symbol.
The contacts are all fine, no damages. I checked that out.
Long press of power button (and 3-buttons) also did not work.
Any further suggestions?
Cheers,
Grobie

If the battery is faulty, the phone wont turn on even when the charger is connected. Replace the battery with the one you got when you purchased the phone.

Sorry to hear that,
Are you 100% positive that the battery charged with the external charger are fully charged? (maybe the charger himself is dead?) A voltmeter should assure that.
If the external charger and batt are ok, try to let your SGS without any batt in during 24hrs and see what you get.
Otherwise be ready to rma it.
GL.
Yes, the batts are 100% okay, I put them into another phone, they work fine.
I'll check out your last suggestion and let you know.
Thanks so far!
Cheers,
Grobie
Remove MicroSD card and SIM then while holding the on button replace the battery.

Z1 Sudden Death!

Hello!
Yes, it's right. I guess it's my turn to get the sudden death of my beloved Xperia Z1.
It's dead, but I don't think it's completely dead and I'm hoping for some help from tech navy's around here and from other people who got the sudden death issue so here's what happened:
I woke up early in the morning at around 8 am and the battery was at 9% and I had no time to put it on charger because I'm in a hurry, so I said I'll put it on charger in car same as always. I use the magnetic cable that I removed from the dock (cuz my sis lost my charging cable, I have to use my magnetic one every time) and I almost always charge my phone in the car with that cable. The phone was working perfectly so I locked the screen and connected the magnetic charger and the charging light didn't come on so I wanted to check if it's charging.... and found out that it's dead (no charging LED, not turning on, no Power + Volume up vibration, no nothing) so I went back to the house and put it on my mother's charger (Micro USB) and got a red LED light as if it's charging, but it's not. still doesn't power up and everything and yes, I've tried the reset button near the SIM card, nothing wants to work.
I took it to Sony service center later that day and they said it will take 3 days because of the traffic they're having, and I have no warranty because I bought it on release which is more than a year ago. After 3 days, they told me that it's a motherboard problem and it got water damaged (while the last time I put it in water was about 2 weeks before that day, and he saw that the white thing is red) and it can't be fixed pay some money and take a new one (just phone no boxing no nothing) and I said no thanks and took the phone to another shop and he checked it and told me that he can't fix it.
I cracked open my phone and I can't see any water damage in it, everything seems to be perfectly fine. I've tried everything I could think of, everything I read on the internet, but nothing seems to work, and the pc doesn't even notice that I connected my phone, I've tried connecting it in fast boot, and flash mode, but nothing works it just keeps the red LED light on. Disconnecting the batter didn't help at all.
I called Sony service center and asked them if I can buy a motherboard from them and they said that they don't even have replacement parts for any Z series phone because they're not authorized by Sony to repair the waterproof/resistant Z series phones (The service center here isn't Sony, but it's an authorized service center by Sony) so at that point I lost hope to get it repaired.
All that happened back in January, but now that summer is here, I want to fix it somehow. But I have no clue where to start, and I'm not sure how to confirm that it's the motherboard that's damaged. is there a way to find exactly where the problem is? I have a soldering iron and everything needed to repair the phone, all I need is to know where's the problem! I can buy parts off of internet, and I will if I need to, but I'm not gonna buy a whole motherboard from ebay because I simply can't trust that motherboard.
Sorry for the lengthy post, and thanks for any help you'll give.
Regards,
~J2C

leave your phone for a weed and try to charge it . if your phone still led light I think your battery die not your phone .
Your battery is dead, if you have taken it apart already just buy a new battery or buy a micro usb lithium battery charger from ebay and hook it up to your battery (by itself) I posted about my experience here http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z1/help/red-led-flashes-charging-solution-t3141345 If you have access to voltmeter you can check the battery voltage, it is like 2.6v or there abouts. Your phone will not charge a battery this far gone.

I don't think that the battery is dead, because:
1- I get a STABLE red light when I put it on charger or connect it to PC.
2- I've tried a method that's said to revive a dead battery on a Z1 (or Z series) and it didn't work.
3- If it was really the battery, then this should've worked! But no, When I connect the motherboard with test point properly connected, the PC just doesn't recognize the phone.

I followed all those methods as well and none worked for me either. Measure your battery voltage with a voltmeter, it is the cheapest way to verify if the issue is battery or something else.

Hello!
I finally got access to a multimeter today and checked my battery's voltage and it was about 3V so I can confirm that the problem is not the battery.
It must be some kind of hardware problem, and I don't think that you really did try the test point fix and you just said yea yea bla bla YOUR BATTERY IS THE PROBLEM! No, it's not.
Any other suggestions?
Thanks!

I've charged it, and still not working.
Bumping cuz I want my good ol' Z1 back
I've experienced a "sudden death" once, it was really scary to me.
I've flashed a custom rom, rebooted and went to bed directly without waiting "android is upgrading" or whatever.
The next day I saw that my phone was not opening. There was no red led to indicate low battery, I plugged to charger for some seconds and didn't see a red light to indicate "charging" so it was weird to me. The solution was to charge it for more than 30 minutes and afterwards it went to 1%! Maybe you should try to charge with the cable like normally and wait for a while

Hope it works! 30 minutes was so long and worrying though :silly:

Nope!
You obviously had a dead battery, and I've already left it on charger for 2 continuous days.
I clearly have a hardware problem. Probably a dead chip as the phone died the moment I connected the magnetic charger.

If u disasassembled your phone then simply disconnect battery, connect phone to pc (with disconected battery) with pressed volume button down, if phone working u should see blue led light (flashmode)-if this happen then your battery is fault (maybe not, try to flash stock rom if u see flashmode), if not then it is mainboard.

I don't think that you actually read the first post, but no problem.
The computer doesn't recognize the phone at all, with or without battery. And I've posted a link a couple of posts back that leads to a "hard brick fix" thread and even that didn't work for me.
Anyways, I just tried what you told me to try, but no. No flashmode, no fastboot, no nothing.

Went completely dead...worth a fix maybe?

I went in to get my Note 4 off my desk, and found it with a blue LED on, and dead. I pulled the battery, held the power button down a couple minutes to completely dump any electricity, and no go. Won't show charge when plugged to USB, different battery same thing.
So, I'm presuming something is definitely bad in the hardware.
Debating whether I should bother dropping it by a cell phone repair shop, or just invest in another.
Wondering if anyone had had success ressurecting a phone in this condition.
Thoughts?

He did that. Does it show up when connected to a computer?
Is an interesting saga.
I tried hooking to a computer, different USB cable, etc.
Interestingly, I took it to a repair shop, they plugged it to a charger (which I had done) and it started charging. Turned it on and it booted. I took it home and finished charging and am using it now.
Darned if I know...

I've got the same problem. seems like the phone overheats for a bit. Right now, I cannot powercycle unless I remove the battery and let the phone sit for anywhere from 30 minutes to 8 hours.
All I know for sure is that the problem started when I was trying to upgrade the phone from KitKat.
Basically, at this point, I need to do my best to not let the battery run all the way down, unless I am ok without the phone for a while.

im having this blue light problem right now currently. you said you just plugged it in and it booted?

Mix shut off on its own, won't power on.

Got my mix like 1 month ago. Stock miui and recently updated it to 8.5.4.0. No mods or unlocking the bootloader or anything like that.
Today, it was at 11% so I plugged it in the charger. 5 minutes in I looked at it and it wasn't charging, so I unplugged it and then it turned off before I could plug it back in.
Now it won't turn back on, the charging light won't light up. It looks dead.
I haven't dropped it or spilled any liquids on it. It wasn't exposed to extreme heat or cold and has a case around it at all times.
WTF happened? $650 down the drain?
What are some tricks I can do to try to save it.
I had a similar problem a week ago. Battery went dead and I plugged in the charger. But I discovered after an hour that it didn't charge. I tried turning on the phone, only response was a quick flashing red light. Tried different chargers, tried holding down the power button for a long time, tried the different butto combinations, no luck. Then I just left it in the charger, and after several hours I finally got a response from my beloved Mix. I took a long time to fully charge, but now it is working normally again. Phew! No idea what went wrong. But keep trying and hoping. Good luck!
To the original poster:
Has the phone powered on now? The same thing happened to me too.
My Xiaomi Mi Mix showed low battery sign so I plugged it in to charge. The phone immediately went off. I pressed the power button to restart it, it showed the Xiaomi logo then immediately went off and since then (this was 2 days ago) it has not powered on.
Kindly note the following:
1. It didnt have water spilled on it
2. It didnt fall or have any mechanical damage
The only thing was, the battery was low, I plugged it in to charge and it went off and never came on again. I have used the same charger to charge other phones so I doubt if the charger is the source of the problem.
Kindly help, what is wrong with the phone?
thanks

What can I do now? This is extremely saddening
Mine just did this. My resolve was to hold down the volume up button and then plug the phone in. It should boot into recovery (down for bootloader) and from there reboot into system. I seems for some reason the bootloader is not allowing the phone to charge. You need to get around it.
Happened on mine in the first day. I even thought like why I bought a pos Chinese device. After 30 mins charging, it's started booting by power on button as it's supposed to be. Weird thing.

You could try unplugging battery overnight, watch a tare down first. It's not hard, I would be surprised if you have done any damage.

My Xiaomi Mix won't turn back on
this happened to my xiaomi mix yesterday. I was using it during dinner. Suddenly the screen wouldn't come on, flashed a bit, then shut down. I was able to hard reset it once. After that, the phone just died. and won't come back on. What do I do?
Please note: the battery was almost full. Did not drop it or get water in it.

Battery will need to be unplugged overnight, in the morning plug it back in, it won't boot or charge at this stage, leave on charge for a few hours maybe upto 12 after that it will be fine.

So I'll need to let the phone's battery die first, then full charge it again and it should work again?

No you need to disconnect it, that means removing the cover which is easy, just watch the teardown on YouTube

Thanks so much for the help. I tried that but unfortunately it didn't work. I did feel a slight vibrate when I tried to power it on though.

Do you know if it's a battery issue? Should I replace it with a brand new battery?

I think it's a charging issue, swap charger and cable.
Does pc recognise the phone
Have the same issue. During charging and watching youtube, it turned off. No signal since then.
Changed charger, tried PC... Also disconnected battery and charging for more than 24h.
Now have a new battery and USB board and no signal
Any idea how to get the data from it?
Thanks
