Does anyone else have issues using GPS on ALL Froyo ROMS? I have tried all the Froyo ROMS on this forum with nearly every kernel. I do not use the BFS Roms which I know break GPS. I have flashed back to Fresh 2.4.0 and GPS no longer works in there either. Should I try something else or remove my root and bring phone back to Sprint. I am at my wits end here as I use Cardiotrainer to track my runs. I have tried other run tracking apps and even Google Maps. After a short period of time it stops tracking my progress. Am I the only one with this issue?
Download GPS Status from the market and run it:
Menu>Settings>GPS & Sensors>Manage A-GPS state>
Hit "reset" to clear cached GPS data, then "download" the A-GPS packet.
Thank you for your response. Unfortunately, I have tried this already but it also did not correct the issue.

This works on the Evo not sure if it works on the hero. I have done this on my Evo and it works. You cant do it while using CM6 so you have to flash another rom then flash back to CM6.
1. Nandroid backup your current CM6 (will need to restore later)
2. Boot to recovery
3. Wipe data, cache, Dalvik
4. Flash the rooted stock rom
5. do a wipe data, cache, dalvik one more time to be sure after flash.
6. Let it boot up and the next step is VERY important
7. Launch phone dialer and dial ##GPSCLRX#
8. It will ask you for your MSL, feed it.
9. Upon hitting OK, your phone will just say reboot in 10 secs, let it reboot.
10. Once rebooted, launch maps and your GPS should lock almost instantly.
11. If it worked, then boot into recovery.
12. Wipe data,cache,dalvik
13. Restore your previous CM6
14. Now try to launch maps again and you should expect same result as in step 15. If NOT, then reboot and do a wipe
I'll try it right now, cause I too have GPS issues. I'll let you know later after some geocaching how it did.

Or you could try the fix that existed before A-GPS came in:
1) Create Nandroid backup of setup
2) Boot to recovery, do full wipe, install Sense rom (I used Fresh)
3) Boot up to Fresh, then once in there turn on GPS and go to Maps.
4) Once you get GPS lock that holds, reboot to recovery and nandroid back to old setup.
I actually had to do this somewhat frequently way back when, and I and several others can vouch that it works. Its just a PITA.
Have you tried the newest #13 uncapped kernel from Decad3nce? GPS works for me with that. Also try moving away from a lot of trees and buildings etc., and see if you can get a lock then.
1. Download GPS Status from the market and run it
2. Hit Menu button to access the settings menu
3. Under Settings Choose GPS & Sensors
4. Then Choose Manage A-GPS State
5. Choose Reset on the Pop up dialog
6. Choose Manage A-GPS State again and choose Download.
7. Get back out and check to see if your GPS get lock properly.
This method work for me without having re-flash back to sense to get a lock.
This fix does work on a CDMA Hero, as I have tested it and it's working much better.

like the OP, I too tried all the other GPS fixes I was reading about.. but none ever stuck, I agree that booting into sense and loading maps and then restoring cm6 does work but it doesnt stick long enough. I can't say yet how long this fix will stick as I just did it, but I can say that my Layars, c:geo (geocaching app which is gps heavy), foursquare, and maps all pinpoint where I am A LOT faster since I did this fix.
I will report back at the end of the day to tell if the fix seemed to stick.
I will give this a try as well. Thank you for the suggestions. My issue isn't really the GPS locking. It locks immediately from using GPS Status and flash to Fresh. It just seems to atop following my movements.

Okay dumb question, but you're not using a BFS kernel right? Because that is a symptom of it.
Froyo Hero to the rescue
No I am not. Haven't even tried one.

I re-read the first post, I do believed that I have the same problem as well. It's not the locking GPS but it is the tracking over period of time. I do have the same problem intermittently and especially if using Navigating with GPS more than 30 minutes or so. GPS signal dropped and could not track any more. It happened on almost every build, except 9/10 with Darchstar #2 kernel (come with 9/10 build) where It only did it one time. I am still using 9/10 build which very stable for me.
That sounds worth a try. Thanks.

GPS Issues
OK, I have tried Sprint Nav (both the signed sprint version and the Impaler's posted apk) on the latest Extreme Blue and v0.2 AOSP and receive the same results, the nav will work for a couple of minutes then it will start kicking out. It says "can't get gps signal in this location", then as soon as it kicks back in it will state, "you now have gps signal" it will do this every 5 seconds or so after that. When it completes about 10 of these cycles, it will finally kick out completely to where you have to shut off the GPS signal and turn it back on to start again.
I have followed all of the recomendations in this thread including flashing Fresh Hero 2.4 (by the way there were no issues using Fresh Hero GPS works just fine) and updating everything (PRL, User Data and the GPS stats). I then flashed back to AOSP v0.2. GPS is still broken. Does the same thing as above. I found the Colin batter fix and applied that as well. No luck.
Anymore ideas?
Thanks

MSL is a pass code. Its a password that allows you access into some of sprints advanced settings. With this pass code you can reset things or just change what network your cell phone is connecting to and things like that. If you search the Evo forum you will find out how to get your MSL very quickly. Also you can call sprint get to technical support and then ask them for you MSL. Calling sprint is hit or miss if the tech guy starts asking questions just let hime know you want to reset your GPS because its not functioning properly. Dont talk about it thought unless he ask you too.

Thanks for that update. It appears the new CM6 build has corrected my GPS issues and my phone is running better than ever!

my phone is messed up. this is what i HAD:
cyanogen 4.1.9999 and using handcent sms. everythnig worked fine in terms of my sms. got my messages on time, in order, and all of mine would go through fine.
NOW i have:
cyanogen 4.2.1 and still using handcent. now my messages are random. sometimes it works, sometime i plain never get them. sometimes mine go through, sometimes they just get stuck in "sending". then other times ill get a message but hours later. and even ill get like 3 messages at once hours later, and they wont even be in the correct order!
now im not entirely sure what happened here. but i analysed everything and its seems to me that the problem might be the rom. because its just abuot the only thing that has changed from when it used to work. i did not wipe as cyanogen himself said it was not nessacery. i did do the fix permissions and fix file systems. didnt really help. but i have a few questions:
is anyone else having sms issues after updating?
OR is anyone else in the los angeles area having sms issues?
because ive also noticed that my 3g has gotten real crappy lately.
what could the problem be and what would you guys advise? please help. if its because tmobile is upgrading to that 7.2mbps thing then okay! lol if not then wtf? im not paying $70 a month for this garbage. i strongly think its tmobile but who knows. oh wait, YOU knows
I'm having the same issues on this ROM, I reflash and typically SMS works for a day or two and then totally ****s up.

same here and im on the 4.2.5 ....
I had same problem with Handcent and CM, reverted to Chomp and finally just use the "stock" sms app, it made the problem better but I am missing texts once and a while.
that's strange. I am not having this problem at all with handcent. I have been using it with all my cyanogens and I am currently running 4.2.5 and have used all his previous ones without this problem
This is so annoying! Cyanogenmod shouldn't be considered "stable" when there are stupid bugs like this. It's so embarrassing to ask people to resend their texts. Try bragging about the Android OS/Cyanogenmod to them after that.
I have a theory, only a theory mind you... and I am only a noob. But it seems like the missing texts problem on my phone is often related to the fact I am streaming audio via bluetooth to my hands free sytem while driving.
If I send texts to myself via Google voice while listening to music or Beyondpod, it is extremely unlike to reach me, but if I try again with music stopped I receive texts much more frequently. Anyone having this experience?
Or does anyone want to test this theory out?
Also would moving my notification sounds to system (currently on SD, since CM didn't include them) possibly help?
just clear the cache in sms. AND flash the new ROM.

The problem with that sentiment is that it's not the rom. The information you guys are giving is extremely limited. djcalamari took it a step in the right direction by letting us know what other things he was doing when the messages were missed. Theres also about a hundred other factors that could be causing your texting woes. I, for one, have never had any problems with texting on any version of CM, even the experimental builds. I can also vouch for tons of people who havent either.
Have you tried wiping and then reflashing? Have you tried formatting your ext partition? Have you tried clearing app data? Have you contacted your provider to make sure theres not a problem related to your sim? Cause you might want to try some of those things before blaming the developer for problems that only a very small number of people seem to be having.
I am going to wipe and reflash, been trying to avoid doing this but the problem warrants it. Backing up apps right now via Astro.
Question: If I wipe ext, can I just copy the files (i.e my apps)...wipe, then paste them back with no ill effects? What would be the best way to do this using a windows pc? A live cd of linux, or is there some easier way?
Hopefully it wont come to that, though. I don't know if I really want to wipe the ext, seems risky? I know these are noob questions, sorry in advance.

They're not noob questions, dont sweat it. At least you're being proactive. Heres what I would recommend you do:
make sure you have Amon_RA's 1.3.2 recovery installed. Once you do, boot to recovery, go to the console, type "utility" at the prompt and select the option to back up your apps to your FAT partition. Once it finishes, go back to the recovery menu, mount the sd card to your computer from the menu, and make a complete backup of your fat partition to your computer. After that, unmount the card and triple partition your card. This ensures that all of the data and symlinks get erased and the card is fresh. Once you do that, throw everything back on the card, follow the initial steps above (console->utility) and select the restore apps to ext option.
that takes care of your SD card. after thats all done (shouldnt take more than 5 minutes to do all that), perform a system wipe and then reflash the latest CM. reboot and you're all set.
My response to the HERO mms/sms thread...
Too bad the damn search function is limited to 4 characters.
Theres a laundry list of Roms with SMS/MMS issues. Most have unique fixes.
Best advice is to wipe , reformat your SD card , and start from scratch with said ROM. That way you eliminate most of the "problem is on your end" situations.
Too many roms get knocked out of wack for no apparent reason. Its almost impossible to search for a solution with a 4 character limit.
Ive had MMS issues with nearly every ROM Ive tried. Much as I love the performance had to move away from Cyan for now because my MMS issues were persistent with those ROMS.
i was haveing this same problem when i was running his roms so i called tmo and they said it was due to tower problems that ws 9 months ago ive since moved about 8-12 miles east of where i lived chaged roms but still use handcent....tmo and still sayin tower problems but " new towers will be built in roughly 120 days" from what tmo says i dont think its his builds its prolly tmo ...
by the way i live in wpb fl far far far away from ca but i was having a simialr issues so i figured id let ya kno oh yea and by calling and *****ing to tmo about it i got 10- 15 off my bill for 3 months ...it was to the point i was calling everyday submiting trouble tickets would ya kno it as soon as i hung up the reps were clearing out the problems ...go figure...

Thanks for the good advice. I am going to do this right now, that recovery image sounds pretty cool, lots of useful features! I hope this relieves my SMS issues after all is said and done, because other than this one issue, I love the rom!
If it doesn't, I may have to drop it, or my textaholic girlfriend may drop me!

wohh dude thats weird a year from the day you posted this and my phone starts having this same exact problem out of nowhere...
HTC hero Cyanogen v6.0
[comment removed - wrong forum]
Hi, new poster here. I've only just started to tinker with my vogue after 2 years of suffering through WM6.1, unaware of all the outside possibilities. It's quite impressive really and i'm having a grand time with my new toy.
BUT.
I can't for the life of me understand why the data connection is not working.
I installed incubus' HTCSense release first, and it wouldn't connect (small little orange light next to the Ev symbol in notification bar:warning? error?), so I just wiped everything and installed the latest Donut. Now it says everything's fine, i can connect the modem and all, it even gives me an IP... but nothing that actually uses the data connection works; and I can't ping my IP from the outside, either.
I can't possibly be the only one with this problem, yet no thread on this forum seems to be addressing it. Does anybody know how I could track it down or work out a passable solution? I really don't have much use for Android if all it can do is be all kinds of pretty and switch between 5 screens silky-smoothly...
thanks in advance!
Vianney
PS: note that I'm on a Sprint plan, voice 200m + unlimited data, no text.
have you tried flashing back to stock windows, confirming data, then flashing to android again( either build).which voguimg.nbh file did you use?
Like hunter said, you need to flash back to the stock Sprint rom and provision data. You can download the stock rom for the vogue here or off of the Sprint downloads section. Nine times out of ten data problems seem to be because data wasn't provisioned prior to flashing Android.
this is also a good time to mention the forum search tool. since this question has been answered at least 100 times
Thanks for the suggestion! I don't suppose there's any way to save my settings/data while I flash everything back to winmo?
Provisioning might be the issue. But I had been using my Vogue on WinMo for 2 years and using data with no problem... that said, I changed my data plan from by-the-kb to unlimited since, so it might be that?
Hunter, I used incubus' included NBH for his Eclair, and voguimg-240x320-eclair-29-04-10.nbh for Vym's Warm Donut.
Kyle, I searched for a week before posting here so i'm familiar with this tool, but never could find the right answer; I'll happily educate myself if you provide me with the magic search terms.

Do a reboot and when the text/code starts scrolling push the volume slide up to get the install menu. There should be an option to backup data. When that's done you can put it into bootloader and flash to winmo. Once you know you have data working on winmo, try browsing around a little, you can go back into bootloader and flash the nbh file you're using for Android. When it reboots go back into the install menu. Install the system and then restore data and you're all set.
Many thanks guys, I switched back (after a few hours and scares), provisioned, switched again, and now I'm just having too much fun awesome job.
hi again
Do you have to redo this everytime data stops working? It was doing just great and stopped all of a sudden 36h ago. Now the modem connects but doesn't even get an IP, no data icon appears in notification bar, and yet all the options (sync, background data...) are back to normal.
ifconfig -a gives me info for 'lo', 'dummy0' and 'usb0', all supposedly ok but with no packet (8 on 'lo') and no error to track down.
Is it likely in need of reprovisioning? Am I going to have to do it every 15 days?
thanks,
V
Your data shouldn't just stop working. Have you trie a reboot?

several times yeah.
It's just not even trying. The modem says 'done' but that's it, any app using data just says it couldn't establish a connection... i'm baffled.
Hi, few days ago on a long drive while I was using the phone (music, gps, wifi scanning) suddenly it run out of internal memory, everything stopped working. I had to reboot it, it was still not fine, but since I was driving I just stopped paying attention to it. Next day it seemed to work again but since then I can't use my wifi.
Activating wifi says few seconds later "unable to scan for networks" and it deactivates itself again. Before I try with factory reset and lose all my settings I wanted to ask here for help. I found some similar problems in forum or google but its about other phones and nothing helped so far.
The wifi is not broken because thetering works - others can use my phone as AP, but I can't use the wifi to connect to any network :-(
N1, Android 2.2, FRF91, Rooted with one click universal root.
Thanks for any advice.
Turn off Wifi, download and use "Cache Cleaner" on Market,
or go to recovery, wipe dalvik cache and cache.
reboot your phone and see if it solves the problem.

Should I do a backup first?
Will (some of or all) my settings be gone after this?
BTW: Something strange happens with my N1, yesterday and today after turning off, when I turned it on, the phone vibrated few times (around 7) shortly, screen remained black and I was not able to turn it on. Removing battery for a second helps.
Maybe I should finally move to Cyanogen, I think I will like it, but I never flashed a phone before, I'm scared I could break it.
Settings - Privacy - Factory Data Reset
Wifi fine again.
i flashed cog 4.1.1 everything was working smoothly no problems. until i got bored and started playing with sgs tools. long story short i was curious to see what the "market fix" was, installed it and after reboot i could not connect to 3g. i could make phone calls and receive texts but no internet. so i backed up everything and re flashed the rom but nothing, still couldn't connect to 3g. so i backed up my old rom and im back at square 1. any ideas?
I'm sure you might already be aware, but you might check to see that you have not deactivated data network mode. If you hold the power button down for a couple seconds when using cog 4.1, it will bring the power options screen. Second one in the list is for turning on/off data network. Although reflashing the rom should have probably reset this to default, I thought it might be worth taking a look at. As for the market fix in SGS tools, I have not tried that yet, so I'm not sure how that affects your phone.
Also, when you reflashed the rom, did you first reflash to stock from odin and do a master clear, or just flash over the existing rom?
I been having weird issues with my captivate. Latley on wifi connection I would have no internet, YouTube, or market. Even sometimes on 3g my YouTube will say no communication or server error as well as android market. It started happening a month ago where my phone kept saying force close cause of facebook and android something and I had to reset it back to default. (People said there was no fix).
Last night I had to reset it again because it kept saying it was downloading a program from the market and never stopped for 2 days. It also disabled any downloadable update. So before I reset I unrooted it with z4 mod and reset. Also wiring stopped working.
It was OK until I rooted with z4 and now I'm starting to get connection issues. It doesn't matter what house I'm at its the same. I rooted it before by using the computer and busybox and it was fine
If the issues only happen when its on wifi....YouTube will never work. It will say error or no network and refuse to do anything even on 3g. And it will never ever let me log into my Google account anymore. I know I'm using the right password cause I can log into my home computer
Also my TV out is all static and blurry regardless of pal or NTSC output and it doesn't work regardless of the plug I use and TV. I even switched all rcas to make sure the video isn't in another output
I'm on eclair 2.1. I am really irritated and tired after a day of searching. Thanks!
An easy way to check to see if its software and not hardware would be to flash stock with Odin. And test again.
Sent from my SGH-I897 using XDA Premium App
Unfortunately I didn't back it up: :/
Also I never flashed before
I was going to try to learn how to flash and I just remembered this phone would never go into its boot menu. I used to be able to use sdk to do it but after my last reset it doesn't work
I'm not dumb I done every method that people said many times with no luck. It has never went to it manually
Try using Titanium Backup to back up important data you might have on your phone. If you're having market problems, connect your phone to your computer and manually backup files. Then, follow the instructions here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989 to get Odin3 One-Click and the necessary drivers, and then use it to flash back to stock JF6 (2.1). Then, once you're back in stock JF6, enable USB Debugging in your phone settings, change USB Connection type to Mass Storage, and with Odin3 open, plug in your phone and mount the internal SD card, then click on Master Clear in Odin3, which will wipe all your user data. Then, if you decide to install ClockworkMod Recovery, use it to format cache, user data, and Dalvik cache. Hopefully, this will solve all of your problems
OK...there is nothing much on my phone. All the goods are on the SD card that I can easilly put back on the computer.
I will try what you say. I really want to get everything working before I start having fun with themes and other things to make my phone unique
Thanks. Ill report back later tonight!
My phone works, and for the first time ever I was able to go into the boot screen! lol.
I did the flash, and then master reset.
So what now, should I root it again? Or wait, or fiddle with themes? Or just run stock to see if I have issues?
Will this correct my video output to?
Well I went to the dark side. I felt overconfident in flashing my phone so I decided to learn how to install another ROM. Now I am running cognition 4.3.
I like the new look. The speed is crazy compared to stock 2.1 eclair.
I want to officially thank you for the help that you given me. Its hard to understand sometimes on this forum. But with the assistance of the tutorials on this site, and YOUTUBE everything works out ok. I wish you guys lived closer, id hook you up with some beer lol.
Now I got to figure out why ADB doesnt work on my computer =).
Ill check my video output tomorrow as well.
No problem, I'm just glad your phone works again
And btw, no need for beer because I'm only 16 lol
